Hibernated apps show up in quick action notification menu. - Greenify

---------Update on 2017-12-10----------
I spent some time on this issue these days and made a little progress. Here is what I found:
I am using Island (com.oasisfeng.island), which is also an Oasis Feng's project, to manage some apps which ask too much permissions and do not use GCM as push serivce.
The progress listed in the quick action menu are actually installed in "island", but are also recognized as "mainland" apps. They were once installed in the "mainland" and added to the Greenify, but already been moved to "island". So Greenify could not stop an app that did not exist.
Steps to reproduce the issue:
1. Install Amap (com.autonavi.minimap) and Alipay (com.eg.android.AlipayGphone) into "mainland" and "island";
2. Add both of the four apps into Greenify;
3. Remove them from "mainland";
4. In Island app, freeze then unfreeze these two apps;
5. The quick action notification menu should look like this:
https://i.imgur.com/0weJIRj.png
As you can see, the apps that were installed in the "island" are tagged with "(in Island)", but there are also two apps, which should have already been removed from "mainland", listed in there. And "hibernate all" function would do nothing to them, because they were actually not exist.
I'm not sure it's a bug with Greenify or Island, or even both.
Temporary Fix:
1. Install the apps that can't be hibernated into "mainland";
2. Remove them from Greenify;
3. Uninstall these apps from "mainland".

Device: BlackBerry PRIV (STV100-1)
System: Adroid 6.0.1
Greenify: 3.8.5
Island: 2.5.0/2.5.2
Issue
All apps that were added to Greenify were listed in the quick action notification menu, even if they were already been hibernated.
When did this issue came out?
Recent update.
What do you expect?
Is there a way to set this function to list running apps only like before?

Not seeing this; QAN working as before. Might be config/device/rom specific. Greenify 3.8.5 on Android 7.1.2 w/Xposed (official).

Thanks for the additional details. Island is "Early Access" with clear notations around potential instability. It's up to the developer to take note of this thread and address any issues he feels are pertinent. It looks like you have identified a workaround; hopefully that will benefit others while things get sorted.

Greenify not keeping notifications on LP 5.1 with xposed

I am just wondering if anyone else is having problems with notifications disappearing upon hibernation with xposed 5.1. I have everything set right in experimental settings, I've been using this so for years so I know how to set it properly☺. Just wondering if I am the only one because I am about to loose my mind!! I've tried everything, installing uninstalling downgrading upgrading, I've spent hours on it, just thought I'd ask before giving up. Running in boost mode with donation package. Thanks

Try the Xposed version of the GB Dev available in the super alpha Xposed thread. Also use beta 3 of Greenify with that. This combination is reported to be working.
Another alternative is to disable deep hibernation in Greenify.

Yes I have tried every possible combo, litterally spent hours on it. I am just wondering if it is my problem only or are other people having this problem? I would love to know!

Hi guys. I'm on the same boat.
CM12.1, Greenify 2.6.2b5, xposed super alpha and no notifications kept after auto-hibernate for whatsapp, hangouts and skype.
I've only installed xposed again, and greenify module etc, and notifications only affect Facebook, but just noticed by just noticed that they're snoozing too.
I have the same issue, notifications come in, but then they disappear. I have all the required options checked, using alpha 4 xposed + b5 greenify.
Yes, i have this too. All notifications are gone after re-greenify.

I may have accidentally found a solution. deleted beta 5(back up in titanium backup first) , reboot, reinstalled beta 4, reboot, restore beta 5. seems to be working for me now. not quite sure why.

Did you activate the xposed module after b4 installation? When you restored b5 using TiBu, did you choose app, data or app+data? For me, your solution doesn't work.

yes activated after b4 installation. after that i just restored app+data for b5. alternatively try to enable notification access for greenify as well. might have been a step i missed but its still working for me.

Beta 6 is up, it doesn't address this issue. I tried reinstalling from scratch, greenify appeared in notification access, but as soon as I activated "Keep notifications" (root non-limited one) under greenify, it disappeared from the notification access. @davtse can you please post a screenshot of your greenify settings?
L.E.: I've pretty much figured it out after reinstalling greenify multiple times and trying with different settings. This is what happens:
- Activating the xposed module makes the "Keep notifications (Limited)" disappear from Greenify options, so I went on and activated it before activating the xposed module and restarting the phone. Also make sure to activate Greenify under notification access option in phone settings.
- Even if "Keep notifications (Limited)" doesn't show anymore, if you managed to activate it before activating the xposed module, it will be kept active.
- If you activate "Keep notifications" (the non-limited one), it will cancel the Limited one, and it won't work, and it also makes Greenify disappear from the notification access menu.
These are my findings.
The good part is that I made it work this way, but the notification light goes away when the app is hibernated with a pending notification. At least, the notification stays.

Glad to know that i am not alone in this I'll try your method and let you know. I don't know if there are many users in our case but in case @oasisfeng you decide to investigate on it please let us know if we can help with some kind of log or anything else. (keeping notifications after hibernation is a major feature i think)
PS : Irrelevant to the problem, but could somebody tell me difference between the root and beast mode in greenify ? (did some research on it but did not see a clear answer)
Edit : Unfortunately that did not go well at 100%, i mean that for example when i got a messenger message, the app can not go to hibernation but for facebook's notifications (e.g. friend request) after hibernation the notification goes away ... Keeping notifications is one of the best features in Greenify IMO so being broken make me :crying:

Are you sure you did exactly this?
- after installing latest version of Greenify, DO NOT REBOOT, go to settings and activate only "Do not remove notifications (Limited)".
- activate "Greenify" in Notification access from phone settings
- activate the xposed module and reboot the phone
- activate "GCM push for greenified apps".

Actually, i did reboot before activating the xposed module
Just to clarify :
- In the third step, i just activate the xposed module (so i shouldn't activate any greenify feature ?) and reboot the phone ?
- In the fourth step, i activate "GCM push for greenified apps" only or among the other features ?
- Do you recommand Deep Hibernation or should i leave it off for now ?
- Concerning greenify mode, what would be more efficient in our case Boost or Root ?
Thanks again and sorry for being a pain in the arse
I will try again regarding your next answer and let you know how it went
Yes, you only have to activate the module. No, you can activate other features, for example, I have Deep Hibernation enabled (even though it causes some issues with accounts, and making some apps ask to re-login everytime you use them). So, I don't really recommend Deep Hibernation as it is right now, wait for more updates with fixes for it. Instead, you can check Greenify regularly to cut-off wake paths, which gets you close to having deep hibernation enabled.
Boost is the best tehnically, but I am on Root mode (personal choice).

Try one more time without activating other modules, just go by my steps only. If it still doesn't work, try same method with beta 5.

I did try it with beta 3 and it worked but the notification icon is not the original one after hibernating the original app (and its the same custom icon for every app that has a pending notification and goes into hibernation).
I will try it with the beta 5. I hope that op is aware of it

Can't cut off wakeup paths on Android 6.0.1

Hi XDA Community,
I have recently flashed Cyanogenmod 13 after performing a clean Factory Reset on my OnePlus One. More details at the end of the post. However, Greenify is now unable to cut off wakeup paths of greenified apps, which worked fine before on Cyanogenmod 12.1.
The phone is rooted, Greenify has been granted Superuser rights by SuperSU and is entered as a device administrator under Settings -> Security -> Device Administrators. Greenify - Automated Hibernation under Settings -> Accessiblity was usually set to off, as Greenify shouldn't need that when rooted as far as I'm aware, but I have now turned it on. Still no change. "Draw over other apps" is set to "Yes" for Greenify.
Greenify is running in Boost mode, all Xposed-based features are enabled. Greenify is checked in the Modules section of the Xposed Installer app. Google Play Services and Google Now are permanently on and Greenify shows their status as "Working".
I found the cut off wakeup path feature really useful and would like to use it again.
Could anyone help me with that, please?
Thanks in advance!
Greenify version: 2.8.1 with Donation Package, both from Google Play Store. Legally bought, purchase verification works.
Xposed Framework version: xposed-v82-sdk22-arm
OS: Cyanogenmod 13, cm-13.0-20160419-SNAPSHOT-ZNH0EAO2O0-bacon to be precise
Device: OnePlus One
@Neehlanfyr
The title of the thread is not correct. Cut off wake-up paths works in 6.0.1. I don't know about its working with CM but in my ROM it is working.
When an app is in "working" state, you will not get the option to cut off wake-up path. It needs to be in "pending hibernation" list for that. And it has to be clicked and not long pressed.

Hi tnsmani,
thanks for responding. The thread's title is correct, as I can not cut off wakeup paths on my Android 6.0.1 device. I know very well that it should generally work, but it does not for me, which was my reason for opening this thread. I am looking for a solution that allows me to use this functionality again. To be more precise: I can't cut off the wakeup path of any greenified app, regardless of its condition/status. I forgot to mention that in the opening post, sorry.
The "scissors button" just isn't showing. I have used this feature before on Android 5.1, 5 and 4.4 and if it hasn't been changed radically, I should still know how to use it.
Best regards,
Neehlanfyr

You can update to the stable 2.9 version and check.
The scissors icon will appear only if a hibernated app is woken up by another app/process.

Greenify Auto Hibernation Not Working In Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Non Rooted With latest M

Greenify can't auto hibernate apps in Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 running the latest Miui version 9.2.1.0 (details attached in screenshot below).Even after granting all the permissions, Greenify fails to click the force stop button & no apps are hibernated.
This is a major bug and leaves Greenify completely non functional in non rooted phones.
This issue must be fixed ASAP!

Not sure of your expectations or what you are trying to show with the video. Greenify does not remove apps from storage nor immediately reduce their memory footprint (although they may happen over time due to normal LMK behavior). It's singular purpose is to block unwanted background behavior without crushing functionality.
While you may have indeed identified a new 'bug' a single data point (your device) does not necessarily extend to all devices and configs - rooted or otherwise.

Yes brother.I know that Greenify doesn't remove apps from storage but what I'm trying to show here is that when you click on Hibernate Now, Greenify force closes the apps but in this case it fails to do the same.I am not the sole user facing this issue.
This problem has popped up after the latest miui update.
Thanks again

Appreciate the clarification (might want to shorten and/or annotate the video). So you claim the "problem" is related to the latest miui update but then extend the claim to all unrooted phones and demand Greenify "revert" ... to what?
I do see others raising issues with accessibility based functionality and there may indeed be a link. So far none have stated Greenify flat out does not work, only that automatic hibernation doesn't take place the screen is turned off.
Let's see how this plays out as more reports filter in.

Yes!You are correct. In a nutshell with the latest Miui Update (9.2) , Greenify doesn't hibernate the apps after screen lock even after being granted all the required permissions.
This happens in non-rooted devices

I had same problem on my Mi Max 2 after MIUI update. To solve it just disable MIUI optimization under developer settings and reboot, Greenify will work again as it used to work before MIUI update.

Me and others in MIUI forums had the same problem with only USB debugging turned on, this is what solved it:
Turn on the following option:
USB debugging -Debug mode when USB is connected
Install via USB -Allow installing apps via USB
USB debugging (Security Settings)- Allow granting permissions and simulating input via USB debugging
It's very simple
1 . Turn off miui optimisation under developer settings
2 . Turn on " FORCE ALLOW apps on external "under
developer settings.

I'm on xiaomi redmi note 5 pro (india) with miui 10.0.1

This renders greenify completely useless in my device, since hibernation isn't working at all. I've been using greenify from last 5 years, and never faced an issue until now.

I really don't understand why you are using Greenify to go to an app and click force stop ... Why not just go directly to the MIUI settings and force stop it there ?
Anyway, on all my 4 Xiaomis, with the latest and greatest MIUI 10 8.9.2 Developer ROM as at this date, Greenify works perfectly.
Apps under Hibernation are as expected when viewed from the MIUI Settings, they are already Force Closed (Force Close button greyed out), with the Uninstall button available (not greyed out).
Under MIUI Settings, apps under Shallow Hibernation are not Force Closed, and clicking on the button Force Close will force close it and the button becomes greyed out, and after that, the Uninstall button will be ungreyed and available. When you go back to Greenify, the previously shallow hibernated app that was force closed is now under the section of the normal hibernation, no longer under shallow hibernation.
All fine on my side, MM and Nougat Xiaomis, I don't know about Oreo. I think Greenify is still needed for Xiaomi with Oreo, since Xiaomi seems to walk a different path than the others.

Oh, yes, I forgot, of course I have MIUI OPtimizations disabled, always, less problems for me. All rooted too, with Greenify4Magisk, and some module to allow Play Services to be dozed.
Well, if an app cannot be force closed in the MIUI settings, then it is something else preventing it from being closed, and Greenify cannot override it. Gboard (Google Keyboard if used) I think is an example, if I remember. Only a few, and system apps which I would not touch anyway. I don't greenify important user message apps like Messenger or Whatsapp, though, I also Whitelist them from deep doze, just playing safe.
Excluding system apps, I have only a few user apps, less than 40 for sure. All greenified except a few I don't want greenified. As for system apps,
I froze many of them that I will never use and safe to freeze of course, surely stronger than doze or hibernate.

But for the rest, even if the app is open in the background and you select the option to hibernate it, the force close button is greyed out and nothing happens

Excluding system apps, I have only a few user apps, less than 40 for sure. All greenified except a few I don't want greenified. As for system apps, I froze many of them that I will never use and safe to freeze of course, surely stronger than doze or hibernate.

Ridiculous and counterproductive greenifying a huge app suite. Focus on those that demonstrate bad behaviors; ignore the rest.

Does Greenify really work ?

On my Mate 9 (running Oreo 8.0, no root) I installed Greenify, but Greenify displays that e.g. Opera is greenified, but in an Android task manager (Android Assistant app) it shows it is still eating CPU. The same applies to e.g. Brave browser which has 'no background' according to Greenify.
Does Greenift really hibernate apps ?

Of course it does. The size/activity in this forum plus frequent mentions in respected publications over many years should offer some clues to its integrity. Whether it is working on your device is a different matter.
Greenify does best on rooted devices as unharnessed ROMs can both undo actions and/or misrepresent status. It's quite possible an app placed in hibernation was later woken via internal trigger that Greenify can not suppress on an unrooted device. In the case of Opera (my preferred browser) there is regular syncing of tabs and downloading of *cough* 'news' if you have those features enabled.
I also question info coming out of the "Android Assistant" app. On my device it claimed all apps had zero CPU...including itself. Also did not display system partitions correctly nor properly detect the sensor suite. Granted I only spent a few minutes poking around. Maybe some switches needed to be thrown.
Finally, you probably don't need Greenify on Oreo as Doze does a find job with power management.

Don't I really need Greenify on oreo? Is Doze on Oreo really that good? Can you confirm please? I've been always using Greenify but if I don't need it on Oreo, I'll remove it

Well don't take my word for it. Simply remove all apps from Greenify's hibernation list (hopefully there are not many there), observe device behavior over the next few days then make your own decision.

Well, thanks for information. Just made a quick research and everyone says Greenify is trash on Oreo. So I just uninstalled it. Thanks for heads up. Glad I've seen your comment

Trash? Err-no. I have it installed on every one of my devices for valid reasons. Needed for generic power management on Doze capable ROMs? Probably not (and as such serving no purpose). Enjoy your device.

ok, but, when Greenify hibernates an app, you don't get notificaton froms this app, but when Android itself hibernates the app, you still get notifications, how does these two compare?

It varies by app, developer approach and user settings. Many apps will experience delayed notifications with Doze while other punch right through. Greenify can be configured to permit notifications but only if the app utilizes GCM (Firebase). Aggressive doze, light hibernation, Xposed framework availability and several other variables contribute to notification behavior. If your head is spinning it should! End users should not need to know the contents of the underwear drawer. Best practice is to simply let Android do its thing without 3rd party tools unless one understands their behavior and application. At one time such tools were needed to achieve acceptable app/device performance and battery life. Not so today. Is such a simplistic solution 'optimal' form an enthusiasts point-of-view? Probably not. It is acceptable/reasonable from an end-user perspective? In most cases 'yes' yielding a good balance of performance and battery life with minimal interaction for those who simply want to enjoy their device vs. manage it. Good luck with whatever direction you choose.
Agree one hundred percent!
Greenify on Oreo is an appendage that is best left out in my opinion, since for most, Oreo itself manages the drain admirably. Though I have it installed, it is more by way of habit than necessity. I have experienced Oreo without Greenify and have no complaints.
Greenify is STILL works.
But its benefit on recent Android versions is not as prominent as on earlier versions.
Coz we already have Doze starting from Marshmallow.
It works for me. I have a samsung tab a 9.7 sm-t550 with an aicp 8.1 rom (lineageos based). Therefore it doesn't have the built-in samsung app device maintenance. I've also discovered a little trick to using greenify that I want to share. I use greenify with another app called shutapp. Shutapp is an app that helps you force stop apps running in the background. Except I don't do that. I use it solely for the purpose of having an accurate number of apps running in the background. Then I open the app to see which ones are running. Next I open greenify and hibernate them. I use this method, because I found that when you force stop the apps they will open back up again. Also, I use the widget from shutapp and not the floating bubble which requires extra permissions granted. The widget does the same thing without the extra permissions. This method I discovered has improved my ram and battery life drastically. I can tell because I use status bar mini pro to monitor my ram speed constantly. And finally I do have Xposed with the donation package of greenify, didn't want to leave that out. Not sure if it makes a difference or not, but wanted to be accurate. That's it, hope that works for somebody else, take care.
I hear that greenify isn't really needed on Oreo but how about the xposed version of greenify? That ads a couple of more features, does any of those change the verdict to "must have on Oreo" for greenify?

The verdict doesn't change. Use of Greenify on Oreo may become "must" only if you have a rogue app which can't be controlled otherwise. Even then, it might be better to seek alternative apps instead of trying to control it with Greenify.

Greenify works just fine on recent Android builds. It is a tool that can be very beneficial when properly used to produce a specific outcome. That said, it is rarely needed on Android 6+ as doze handles most of the heavy lifting. Enjoy using your device vs trying to fix problems you haven't identified.

How does Greenify detect whether an app already was already greenified or is running?

@oasisfeng According to this StackOverflow answer: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/41768642/detect-current-running-application-in-android-nougat-7-version/41769341#41769341 it is not possible to find out whether an app is running in background. However, Greenify does exactly this: It shows only those apps that were awoken since last hibernation in a list ("pending hibernation").
My question: How does it do this? Did I overlook something? Or is this a secret?
On my phone (LineageOS 14.1) if I go to Android Settings > Security > Apps with usage access > Greenify it says:
Usage access allows an app to track what other apps you're using and how often, as well as your carrier, language settings, and other details.

So that's how I'd say.
This is also what I used firstly, but it did not work properly. Then after some weeks I found the motivation to read the Android API and found this: https://developer.android.com/reference/android/content/pm/ApplicationInfo#FLAG_STOPPED
This is probably the solution. Sorry for not having posted this here earlier .
