Hi,
I've got a new Honor 9. Great phone so far. But I have one problem:
I can't exclude Gmail from the battery optimization, because it is not in the list of "all apps". So when my H9 goes to deep sleep, I get no more gmail notifications.
Why is Gmail not listed? Has anybode the same problem? And how can I fix it?
Stock Rom (B150), bootloader locked, no root.
Edit: Did a factory reset, but still the same. Some preinstalled Google Apps like Gmail or Youtube don't show in the battery optimization list. They are not in the notification manager list, too. Very strange.
Thanks, _Tallis_

Of course I'm using the apps. That's the whole point.
Yes, I know. I want Gmail to be Not optimized, but I can't deacrivate the optimization because the app is not listed.

I don't want to deactivate Gmail, i want to deactivate the battery optimization for it. I'm not sure if you really know what I'm talking about.
See here:
These are the apps that can ignore the battery optimization, i.e. they receive notifications even when the phone is in deep sleep. You can see that the stock email app is listed here. So I want to add Gmail to that list. But when I switch to the "all apps" list, Gmail is not there:
So I can't add Gmail to the Exclude-List, and therefore I have delayed email notifications when my phone is in deep sleep for longer time.
And my question is again: am I the only one with this problem? Or is Gmail never in the all apps list?
I got this issue too, gmail notifications don't reach me in time

I wouldn't post here if everything was working fine. Gmail notifications are delayed after some time of deep sleep.
And what do you mean with 'deactivated in Account'? Deactivated what? And where exactly?
There's no solution for this issue right now on EMUI
Any solution to this??
Even I can't find gmail in the list. And when I see gmail app properties then in the battery it shows "optimizing battery". Gmail notifications don't appear coz of that.
I'm experiencing the same problem on Honor 8 - emui 5.1.
I have tried to install Outlook and set it up with gmail accounts, it does get notification faster on average (of course, I've activated up all possible options to prevent optimization), but even this cannot wake up the device from the deep doze mode.

Strange but I don't face this issue at all. But I have a feeling my phone doesn't really go into deep sleep since I lose abt 15-20% with it just sitting there connected to WiFi for abt 9-10 hours.

Also on ur Honor 8 try out BlueMail, that's what I use since outlook was being a big pain in the ass. It isn't as visually appealing as outlook but still always gets the job done.
Also I've allowed it to ignore battery optimisation and so I never miss any email. The notifications are instant and my emails refresh in the background with no problem.

Hi,
i had the exact same issue after executing the "optimize" feature in the battery settings.
I could not select "ignore battery optimization" for gmail because it is not in the list.
Today i installed "Inbox by Gmail" and set it up some my mails came in.
Then i chose "ignore battery optimization" for Inbox since it shows up in the list.
After that i uninstalled "Inbox by Gmail" but the push notifications keep coming.
Seems like this setting infected the Gmail setting.
Need to see if it still works tomorrow but until now it does.
Hope this helps you guys as well.
TLDR:
1. Install "Inbox by Gmail"
2. Setup "Inbox by Gmail"
3. Ignore battery optimization for "Inbox by Gmail"
4. Uninstall "Inbox by Gmail"

Hello
The stock gmail app does not sync. It does not even push. Have to manual refresh to receive mails. Wots the problem?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Settings/Accounts and sync/click on gmail account check that Gmail is ticked.
You prolly have the phone go into power saving mode when the battery drops to 50%.
When it goes into power saving mode, autosync turns off.
If u want autosync most of the time, then change power saving mode to 10%.
Even more funny with mine:
since yesterday 6.30 pm stock email app won´t do anything anymore, not even manual sync. Sync circle stays forever. Worked some minutes before faultless.
Tried to register server newly with my gmail address but green bar stayed forever ........
Clicked "cancel", went back to mail app and mail app told me: "account or password wrong"
It´s now completely dead. Tried to switch off, batt off, clear cache but it is dead .................... Google Gmail app works flawless as well as calendar, docs and all othet google account related apps.
Only thing I dedected: when I look into system - running apps - under Samsung mail app it says "Reboot" ???? (in German NEUstart) ...................
Wonder if anyone has an idea how to solve THIS ?
Am I stupid or what ?
I don´t find the register in the menu where I can SELECTIVELY and ONLY delete the account for the samsung stock email app .......................
Am I blind ?
Just for Info (I´m SOOO stupid)
Open stock mail app, long press on Gmail left upper box, choose "delete".
Then register same account again, voila, it works again ..........
(Found it in a German forum .......................... )
I have probably the same problem, although it could be something different. Teh gmail sync can be turned on under Accounts&Sync menu, but it turns off every time I reboot / turn-off the phone. I am using CM7, but I am not sure if this problem is CM7 related... I have reflashed GAPPS but it didn't help.
am facing the same problem not only my gmail does not sync properly, my whatsapp msgs are coming in really slow. am gonna try to delete the account and sign in again. see if it helps.
In my case deleting account didn't help. It still happens for some reason that the Gmail sync doesn't work and when I go to Accounts & Sync preferences I just see that the Gmail sync dialog box is unchecked. So, then I just check the box and it starts working until it, due to mysterious reasons, stop syncing and I need to repeat the process to start the sync again.
Do you have the battery saving feature enabled and if so check the settings.
Because one of the settings (I don't know which because I disabled the useless thing) disables sync or at least it did on my phone.

I have CM7 ROM and I don't use any other special tweaks or settings. The thing is only gmail stops syncing. When I open the sync settings (Accounts & Sync) I often find gmail unchecked, but contacts and everything else syncs just fine. When I set the gmail to sync, everything works until I restart my phone (I have it turned off overnight...).
Hope it described my problems well enough. I have already tried reflashing ROM, GAPPS, deleting my account, cache and all kinds of things I was able to think of. Nothing helped.
I couldn't find such setting. If you mean wi-fi sleep policy I have it set to never. The thing is Gmail sync box is being constantly unchecked whenever I turn off an on again my cell phone...
Question. If I turn off autosync for Whatsapp will it stop being able to send and recieve messages?
You will be able to send and receive messages if autosync is off.

I stopped Whatsapp auto-sync but it keeps turning back on again (not immediately though). I believe it was re-enabled by Whatsapp background service.
Other than uninstalling the app, how do I disable Whatsapp auto-sync and make it stay that way?
Why would you disable it in first place?
I see no reason to becasue it only uses very little data I believe, maybe even none.
And it is very useful, because i you disable it, whatsapp won't be able to see wether your contacts have whatsapp or not.
I would just leave it enabled
Whatsapp uses about 20k a day just syncing. That's about 600k a month. This may not be much in the grand scheme of things but it's 600k more than necessary. And I don't like app's phoning home when it's not necessary.
I don't sit around adding new phone contacts every 5 minutes and I'm quite happy to manually sync when I need to (once in a blue moon). If it wasn't for gmail I'd have auto-sync turned off.
The only way I can think of doing this is to hack the apk and remove the write sync permissions... but then you'd have to do that for every update.
I've used apktool to remove the sync write permissions from whatsapp and so far it seems to be working ok; Still need to check it's effects on battery though.
If anybody wants to try this you can find instructions and tools here.
You'll need to make 2 versions of the apk:
The first version is unchanged but is needed so that the signatures match with the second version. You should uninstall the original version completely then install the first version so that the sync entry is created for whatsapp.
For the second version you need to edit the manifest file and remove the line that gives sync write permissions. This version needs to be installed over the top of the first so that the sync entry for whatsapp is already created. You can do this through adb with the command 'adb install -r yourwhatsapp.apk'.

After much monitoring of my good old Galaxy S GT-I9000 on 2.3.6 XXJW4 and its countless freezes and auto reboots I realised the culprit seemed to be WhatsApp auto syncing address book to its servers.
I reached this conclusion after (i) freezing WhatsApp and seeing the problem disappear and (ii) not freezing WhatsApp but deleting full address book and the problem seemingly disappearing as well.
I 'only' have 2,700 contacts and I uploaded them onto the phone via Google Sync, importing the Outlook file into the Gmail account (and using it to deduplicate contacts etc).
I have tried both deleting the WhatsApp autosync account from the Account list on the phone and also manually disabling WA autosync but (i) the account will pop back up every time after some minutes, autosync enabled and all and (ii) autosync will turn itself back on automatically as well.
I have indeed disabled 'show hidden contacts' in WA settings to no avail (if purposefully enabling it, the Account and / or autosync seemed to come back instantly, together with the 'syncing' notification on the status bar).
I am simultaneously using Telegram and BBM as well as Facebook messaging and Twitter and it is only WhatsApp wreaking havoc with my phone.
I would be very interested to know if anyone else has experienced the same issue?
Cheers

I'm also experiencing the same problem. Auto sync always turns itself back on. I hate it when apps don't obey my command.
The main reason why I don't want autosync is because Android is powerless against so-called 'read only contacts' it can only offer to hide them instead of deleting them.
If I decide to delete a contact which happens to also be tied to whatsapp, Android can only hide the contact (and I don't want that).
I recently got to know an app called whatsapp+ but I don't know if it solves this problem.
Basically after one of the latest FB Messenger updates, it's being woke up for some reason. Unrooted, Moto X 2014 retail running 5.1 and running current 2.7.1 release - I can't pinpoint the reason of the wakeup since the device isn't rooted but apparently it said "Wifi was scanned" other then GCM probably.
For further info, FB Messenger version is 42.0.0.17.137. Had a couple updates since it started but still happening.

Will do tomorrow and report back in this post.
What is happening is, I set a gesture shortcut on my launcher to manually hibernate apps with all due accessibility access greenify requires in non-root mode, whenever im turning off the display. I dont do auto-hibernation since everything used to be fine, until facebook messenger started misbehaving; no other apps other than that one will wake up the device.

I thought I was the only one who is suffering from
Facebook app and Facebook messenger refusing to
Stay in hibernation! Am rooted, xposed framework
Version 73 up and running, boost mode working but
These two annoying apps by facebook were working
Well some months back but after some updates to
These apps, they keep waking themselves up from
Greenify hibernation.....
I started observing there behaviour and I discovered:
1) if you open any other user app that connects to the
Internet, Facebook and messenger come out of hibernation
2) if you hibernate without data connection, once you
Connect to the Internet facebook comes out of hibernation
3) if you open what's app, twitter, Instagram or any other
Social networking app, Facebook comes out of hibernation.
It's really, really, annoying.....
Am using the non donation app and wonder if the
Paid version of Greenify can stop this.......

Can you see any small text below the awake apps, like "Facebook is woken by XXX ... ago". You may need to enable the "Wakeup Tracker" option in experimental features first (not required on some devices).

He is also complaining of the same issue. From his explanation and also from the first image in post no.9 above, it seems that connection to the internet triggers the wakeup.
Just to clarify the issue.
I don't use Facebook or Messenger.
I'm having an issue with not getting Gmail notifications. I've set all permissions to allow notifications, turned off power saving modes and locked Gmail in the background.
But after all this, I still get no indication of a new email until I actually open Gmail.
Can anyone help?
It's only Gmail that I'm having this issue with, which is also confusing me.
Thanks.
Thats odd. My gmail is working fine with notifications. But gmail has a bunch of its own settings for notifications also. Did you make sure to enable them in the gmail app settings itself? Not where it takes you to the settings on the phone but within the app. I dont have to lock gmail in the backround for it to work either. Make sure that it is also taken off the app quick freeze list in battery settings. in the gmail settings on the phone settings itself after you allow notifications you also have to go into the email account listed there and allow notifications for that email account. Just enabling notifications for the gmail app itself wont notify you of emails.
Yeah, I've gone into the accounts listed and enabled notifications in there as well as the settings within the app itself.
If I go into settings>battery>custom power consumption Protection , Gmail isn't on the list of apps. I don't know why?
So I'm at a bit of a loss now why they aren't coming through as everything seems to be set up correctly.

In Battery>App quick freeze make sure gmail isnt toggled on.
In Battery>Smart Power Saver >Toggle Off

In Gmail itself. Make sure you havent set emails to only notify you of priority inbox. I had that problem before as gmail will pop up from time to time to as you to turn on that setting. If you arent paying attention and just click ok like I did once it will drive you crazy.

Actually, No. Im on the Chinese ROM which is actually more restrictive. Ive actually gotten everything to work. Notifications, Backround processes, etc. The only problem I have is I cant get Location History in Google Maps to enable so Timeline doesnt work. And I cant seem to add my Visa cards in google wallet for some reason.

Went into Gmail and was set to high priority only, changed it to all mail and seems to have done the job. ?
Nice one, thanks for the help shadoe_lance.
No problem. Glad to help.
Does anyone else have an issue with Gmail notifications? Most of the time I receive no notifications about new email until I unlock the phone. Even then they do not always come in quickly. When I open the Gmail app they do come in.
Yes, they will "eventually" come in on their own but way later than they should. I have done every battery/data optimization/exception I can think of and find. This should NOT be happening in 2021! This is not a OnePlus phone and even then my 8T is not this bad. Also, the notification LED does not activate for Gmail while it does for Messages and WhatsApp. I have gone through every possible notification setting on the phone as well as for the Gmail app itself and made sure that using the LED was selected on them all. I hate that Gmail is installed as a system app! WHY???
Another interesting things is that Gmail is NOT listed as the default app. It is not even there as a selection. Messages is installed as a system app and it is listed as the default. WHY?
I am liking the phone, but not receiving notifications for such an essential feature as email is NOT GOOD!
The phone is causing Gmail to go into deep sleep when the screen is locked unnecessarily.
I may have found the solution. To start I went into Settings > accounts just to double check that the toggle for "Automatically sync app data" was turned on and it was. While in the same screen I tapped on my email account and then tapped on "Account sync", Here you can do a manual sync of all the various apps associated with your Google account. SO I tapped on the 3 dots in the top right and tapped on "Sync now" and the only thing that synced immediately was Contacts and maybe one other (can't remember which one. No matter how many times I would retry to do a manual sync the same thing would happen.
So I closed all of this out and went directly into the Gmail app > settings and chose my email account and scrolled down to "Sync Gmail" under the "Data usage" section and unchecked this setting. I rebooted the phone, went back into Gmail > settings my email and re-checked the "Sync Gmail" selection, rebooted again and went back into Settings > accounts > my email account > account sync and all the various apps listed in this section had now synced properly. I could tell by the time stamp for each one. I also did a manual sync again and everything in the list synced up within about 10 seconds! I was happy. I locked my phone, set it down, and within a minute or two I received several emails and the notification chime went off. I'm still not sure if the notification LED lit up or not but I think it did. Hopefully this fixes the issue.
Sometimes it isn't what is selected but the order in which you select things so as not to cause a conflict.
This is one area of Android that I think needs improvement (Samsung is the worst for this) that there are too many settings that seem redundant, counter intuitive, and conflict with one another.
Well, after writing all the previous entries I am still having the same issues with Gmail. On my OnePlus 8T every morning shortly after logging in my emails would come in without any prompting on my part. With my Xperia 1 iii I received NOTHING until I actually opened the Gmail app itself and sure enough there were about 5 emails that popped up! Something is very wrong here. I am not looking forward to a factory reset but I may have no choice. I will say this: If after a factory reset Gmail is still unresponsive I will definitely be sending this thing back!
Can confirm that there is something wrong with gmail. Just gmail. Ive tried 3rd party email apps and they work.
Totally understandable that you would prefer gmail over others. I too would actually prefer my gmail to work. I hope this is fixed in a firmware update.

Exactly! I decided to NOT do a factory reset because I feel that it would not help. Instead I just disabled Gmail and installed Bluemail. It has more settings than I care to mess with but at least all my email notifications arrive properly! I am glad that I am not the only one this is happening to. Is there some way to inform Sony directly that they have a problem? I liked it better when Gmail was a Play Store install! I DO NOT like it when ANY apps are installed as a service!
I chatted with Sony Tech support. They went through all the usual settings that I already tried several times. They escalated it so we will see what happens. One thing I have noticed, which may be relevant or not, is that with Blue Mail installed when I do get an email both Gmail and Blue Mail give a notification????
To me it sounds like you just need to whitelist the app in your battery saving settings.

Please, while I can appreciate the suggestion, do you think I did not already go through every possible setting and permutation in an attempt to resolve this issue? I am a retired IT Systems Engineer and I have used cell phones for so long it's not even funny. Not to mention there are others experiencing the exact same thing! However, I was forced to do a factory reset this morning so "maybe" things will start to work properly.
I have exact Gmail notification issue when I got my X1iii but the issue resolved after I upgraded to 61.0.A.11.92 this morning. After switched off Gmail sync off and on and turn on the notification on individual labels, the notification was back.
It might be the previous firmware used a bad GMSCore. My device is a XQ-BC62. BTW the install step 3 did take some time but my phone didn't stuck at that step and it went through.
I have different problem with gmail notifications. For some reason notifications are always coming when in the evening I plug in my phone for charging. After a moment gmail notifications are coming. And this happens all the time.
??? Sony?
Guys please treat everyone with respect.
We are here to help each other and exchange our experience. Not to offend each other.
Thank you.
I have had a few days now with the last update = .92 and so far it appears as if my Gmail notifications are coming in exactly as they should when the phone is locked. For sure much better than before the update. So whatever Sony did in this update (besides the security update) is working for me. The LED is also lighting up properly for Gmail! Good job Sony!
Gmail still does not sync automatically for me on the .92 update. Factory reset and it works for a bit but once after a while it stops. No amount of uninstalling GMS updates or clearing its data will get it working again, so I have no idea what happened.

Have to ask...you did give Gmail unlimited data? Also, you did set Gmail to "excepted" in battery settings?
Even the most experienced sometimes miss things.

Just to be sure, I went through and double checked that Gmail, Google Play Services, and Google Services Framework all had:
* Battery/Power-saving Feature: Excepted
* Unrestricted data: Enabled
Still didn't resolve my sync issues
Did you try this: settings > accounts > tap your email google account > account sync > has everything synced fairly recently? Any of them appear to be stuck, not spinning? Top right 3 dots sync now, does everything finish syncing?
Just adding that I noticed this problem after the .92 update. I'm not sure if its there before. So the .92 didn't solve the issue on my end, glad it solved yours.

I haven't had issues with gmail but I have had the kind of issues described in OP with other phone models and similar apps and the cause was a bit too eager battery optimization settings so I honestly thought it was the cause here too.
If it was not, then it is a shame I couldn't help.
But as a response to your comment: No. I don't think people here are idiots. I just think you are one.

You make it sound like you think people are idiots because as already mentioned in the FIRST POST, he already excepted his apps from battery optimization. If you still ask people if they have done so, you obviously think we are idiots, since you ask a question that has already been answered. Grow up please.
Edit: Here let me quote it for you:
I have done every battery/data optimization/exception I can think of and find.

Testing out a potential fix which seems to be working for now.
I found out that my phone backup isn't working either. Manually pressing the button, the backup keeps telling it failed and asks me to try again later. Searching online, there are some that suggest to remove the screen lock to see if backup starts working again.
After I removed my screen lock, I cleared cache/storage of Google Play Services, Google Services Framework and Gmail. Then I rebooted my phone and left it a while to let it fully boot. I can now backup my phone, and I am getting my Gmail notifications. Now I am observing to see if this is permanent..
If the fix is permanent, at least on my end, it seems that Sony's build of android has buggy encryption. This was an issue with other brands too.
Update on my problem. Firstly, after trying the above, I noticed a few days later that in general I wasn't getting notifications from anything. I concluded that I messed up Google Services too much and therefore factory reset my phone.
After that and readding my google account, My notifications was fixed, except Gmail still wasn't getting notifications, but phone backup started working. I was about to give up and use another email app, when today the September security update arrived in 61.0.A.14.3 update. Being desperate to try anything I updated without hesitation.
This seems to fix the problem and I am getting my gmail notifications.
Not getting my hopes up too much and just continue monitoring but I hope this the end of my google problems.
