Does AOD turn off in pockets ? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

I found similar topics but about different phones and thus different aod implementations so , does the always on screen ever turn off I feel like sometimes i pull it out of the pocket and see it turn on as the phone exits the pocket. Just wondering [emoji3]
Sent from my LG-H840 using Tapatalk

Yes.

Nice, thanks for the quick answer
Sent from my LG-H840 using Tapatalk

Yeah, if you try covering the proximity sensor while the phone is out you'll see turn off

For me aod is a huge battery hog. Isn't it?
I can lose up to 10 % in standby with enabled aod.

Smart stay.

I've been using my sgs3 with smart stay enabled and noticed it doesn't seem to be sensing me looking at it.. I wear glasses.. and I'm wondering if this is a limitation ?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I also wear glasses and i find it works fine for me. Remember it doesnt work in low lights.
I Just tested it and it's not working without glasses on either. I see the 'eye' in the notification bar flash after 15 seconds, then it dims the screen, then again 5 seconds later and then screen switches off.
I've had smart stay enabled since day 0 and the phones had a few power cycles/reboots.

Doesn't work for me with my glasses on or off. Must be my face!
doesn't work for me either. not smart
maybe the galaxy just doesn't like your faces?
maybe that's what samsung meant with it being smart. hehe
seriously i have read somewhere it is the face it is tracking not just the eyes.
It even worked when my Dogs were looking at at a few times, and it's annoying because often I put phone off to the side not looking at it and still stays on and wasting battery.
I'm sorry, I didn't realise Samsung required users to look like dogs for this feature to work.
I'm thinking of flashing a custom Rom anyhow.. be interesting to see f it works on another Rom.

Well I do look a bit Ruff.
I just got my Galaxy. Seem to have the same issue, it's not working. Well I think there will be a software update soon enough.
If I consciously blink every so often I'm able to keep the screen on, but if I don't move or blink it turns off - at least that's how it seems to me.
Can't really get it working consistently yet.
I've had my phone since launch and it dimms but never turns off. I wear both glasses and contact lenses.
If the front camera is.nt pointed towards your face it may turn off however which is annoying sonetimes
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Hi,
I got smart stay working!
I opened the camera, switched to front facing and positioned the camera so that my face was in the centre of the screen and taking up about 50% of the area.
Now when switching to home screen the little eye kept popping up and going away and the screen stayed on!
Paul
I noticed it works flawless. I have it set too 30 seconds.

Great
I find it very useful and works great, I don't wear glasses and I'v only had it two days but does as expected, I can look at it for 10 minutes and it won't turn off, if i point it away from me it turns off after my timeout.
I found if I closed my eyes and squinted one eye a tiny bit open it still didn't turn off though, but it's not like I'm playing hide and seek with it.

when i watch the screen, the screen didn't turn off, -> ok, this is work
but then i closed my eyes about 2 minutes, then when I opened my eyes, the screen didn't turn off

Correction, it has problems in landscape mode.

I find it is a mixed bag. It rarely turns off when I am looking at it. But on lots of apps the screen dims meaning I have to touch the screen anyway. This rather defeats the point if you ask me!

Buying Xperia S, got few questions.

EDIT: Wrong forum, sorry. Please do move it to Q&A section.
I was decided on getting Galaxy Nexus (dat fast updates + looks), when I've read news about google decision to take SXS for AOSP.
Then I reconsider my decision, and choose Sony device as option (I haven't before, because of Sony, I mean SE past, and their sloppy or never done updates). It's actually 100$ cheaper, so it's advantage too.
I have doubts about its buttons. I haven't got chance to test it yet (but will do). Can you tell me if they are responsive or not ? I currently have Galaxy S, so comparison to it would be nice.
Also, how long battery lasts? Unfortunately gsmarena haven't done their test on blog so I can't compare.
Thanks in advance
Compared to the Galaxy S, the buttons on the XPERIA S are simply unresponsive... it requires some adjusting (swiping instead of pressing) but you'll get used to it.
Accoriding to a test from a Dutch website, under heavy duty it's battery will last about 12 hours. Under normal conditions 30+ is manageable: http://translate.google.nl/translate?twu=1?sl=auto&tl=en&u=tweakers.net/reviews/2592/3/welke-smartphone-doet-het-langst-met-zijn-accu-resultaten-welke-doen-het-het-best.html

honestly. i never understood the fact that Xperia S buttons are unresponsive. I've never had issue with them. most people i know never complained.
then again, everyone press/touch stuff differently
If you need to be precise on the buttons, you want to try them out yourself.
in terms of battery it's alright when you recycle it after 2 weeks (let it die and recharge it to full etc) i usually get 10-12hrs normal daily basis (listening to music, surf, txt, etc)
I've come to the Xperia S from the One X, and yeah technical downgrade, but a like the SXS much more! Though the ui isn't as smooth, mostly thanks to Sony I think, the ui is cooler! Love Sony's launcher, I just hope it gets smoother with an update in the near future..
Now, the buttons! First, they will be a little weird and feel unresponsive, but after a little use they work fine. I have absolutely no issues there..
Battery is far far better them what I'm use to! I've been using my phone for bluetooth music and navigation today, which means Bluetooth on, GPS on and screen on for about 1 hour! And this is without charging.. The day is done and I have 17% left, just checked screen time to be 2.5 hours and up time is 16 hours.
Sidenote: [Edit] My One X would never have been able to do this..

buttons ain't anywhere as good as those on galaxy s, i have both the phones, sliding helps but i can never hit the buttons in landscape mode..u'll get used to it and it ain't a deal breaker
Also, the black levels are a bit of a concern, i mean it's no amoled but it has the worst black levels i'hv seen. I compared it to my lcd tv, an iPhone 4 and even some old Nokia phones, xperia had the worst black levels (coz of white magic i guess). It just bumps you when you are used to seeing an amoled screen, but on the contrary, the sunlight readability is quite good
Battery is decent, but wake locks has been a problem for me so far, but that's just a software glitch

For example. During night it loses about 7%, from 11 Pm to 6 Pm... But it's been a while I've not paid attention. About Juice Defender, you need to set it up better, so it don't do what you don't want it to do. The first days it always disabled my WiFi when I simply locked the screen. But if you do the right settings on the Advanced option, it will be really good. It claims to save from x1.70 to x2.40...

What is wake lock? When you unlock your phone, you can use it, but screen is all black ? I did happen to me once or twice on Galaxy S, but that's all. Is this a common issue with SXS?
EDIT: This Captcha is so unreadable and annoying arghgh.

wake lock produces battery drain by unnecessarily putting the phone in "awake" mode when it should be in deep sleep. Some of my experiences with miui and the current .58 rom (it gives around 5 hrs of display time but the wake locks are still there)

[Q] Need app to on and off the screen without using power button.

I am using Galaxy note 2 and want such a application which will on/off the screen without using power button and also it should not use the proximity sensor.
The screen on/off should work only with screen touch.
Can anyone please help me for this?
I know its not ideal, but theres a toggle to turn the screen off, amd then maybe the stylus removed to turn the screen on. Otherwise I feel like that anything touching the screen would cause it to turn on in pocket, similar to when I used to have the screen turn on in my pocket when I recieved a text, and my phone was constantly being "touched" with the bloop sound

There is a feature in some kernels, Plasma for instance, that is called TouchWake. It will not do exactly what you're wanting, and there will be nothing that will because it would keep the phone from deep sleeping and drain your battery extremely fast (not to mention your phone would always be coming on in your pocket because the screen registers touch through clothes if they're thin like pockets are).
TouchWake is where when your screen times out you can set a time limit to just touch the screen to wake it back up instead of having to hit a button.
Other than TouchWake being built into certain kernels, for the use like I explained above, there is nothing remotely similar to what you're wanting. It would just drain the battery way too much because the screen will never be able to be completely powered because its always awake waiting on a touch.

I use touchwake and have great battery life. There have been many arguments in different threads about whether using this mod causes intolerable battery drain, and all I can say is, for my phone, it has barely any effect on my battery.

I don't mean to say that under regular usage it would cause significant battery drain, I use it as well and have seen little to no change. I mean if the OP used it in the way he is wanting that it most definitely would cause significant battery drain because the screen would be constantly awake awaiting input instead of going to sleep after a set amount of time.
Even then touchwake wouldn't work for the OP unless he let the screen time out so it still isn't what he is looking for.

If you set the timeout to zero, then touchwake is constantly on, which is the way I've used it and there has still been no significant battery drain. I also haven't had any issue with it turning on in my pocket. I do, however, inadvertently turn it on often, which is why I wish Faux would activate his swipe2wake feature for his kernel app for the Note II. But he hasn't yet.

I'm using Plasma and the way it is set up is there is there is a time limit to how long the TouchWake feature will be active after the screen times out, if its different on Faux or any others I have no clue.
I find it hard to believe that the battery drain for it being always on isn't significant, I'm not saying you're wrong but that its hard to believe. Its constantly leaving a part of your phone awake, no deep sleep, to scan for touches.

I know it's hard to believe, but I suppose the theory relates to idling a car under certain circumstances vs. turning it on and off over and over. There are instances where the former is actually more energy efficient than the latter (there are threads on XDA that discuss this theory, I can't remember where they are). Also, even though the phone isn't in deep sleep, it "idles" at a very low power usage rate. Again, for me, there is no significant drain at all. Last night, before I plugged it in to charge, the phone was at 53% after being "up" for 16 hours.
You can set any physical key to wake the device by editing gpio-keys.kl in /system/use/keylayout and putting WAKE at the end of the line.
This is how the home key wakes the device by default, you can also disable this by removing WAKE from that line.
Example:
key 114 VOLUME_DOWN WAKE
Would make the volume down button wake the phone.

Try using GO LOCKER and the lock screen setting add on.

That isn't the issue. The issue is the frequently blinking led when battery is below 15%.
Most phone do blink the LED when the battery gets too low, personally I don't have a issue with it & just start charging it.
Also most phones have an options to turn it of.. I have looked everywhere but no option on my Z2
Skickat från min D6503 via Tapatalk
This is probably the only thing I dislike about the z2, so I'd love to be able to turn off the LED when charging. To be honest the red isn't so bad, it's the blasted green that turns on when the battery is full.
I emailed Andrew Moore, the developer of the Light Flow app, and he replied:
I've never found a way to supress the charging light when the phone is
on on sony phones (it's the same with the z and z1). I did a little
experimenting with a z and with root it's possible to stop if I think
but before getting chance to experiment more my xperia z died on me
(only 2 days old - not related to my development, but a sim card
reader error) - sony wouldn't replace it as they said it'd cost more
to replace than a new phone so I lost £400 on a dud phone and never
got around to getting another to experiment with. I'm pretty sure
without root it'll be impossible to stop.

I also found something that suggested the Xposed framework included the ability to disable the LED charge indicator.
So at this point we have two options:
1) Wait for Sony to see the light (geddit?) and add the ability to disable the charge LED in a future firmware update (Samsung has this on the Galaxy s5, I noticed)
2) Root, and see if there's some way to disable the LED.
I'm waiting to see what happens with TA backups before I decide to root, so if someone is braver than me and figures things out I'd love to hear about it!
I would really like to disable the low battery sound though. It's super irritating and plays regardless of the volume or if the phone is in silent mode.
Anyone ever find a solution for this? I'm using the Z3 Compact btw.
I use a small cardboard box to block it

Super Deep Sleep?

My phone's always-on display will turn off. I can't bring it out of it's 'slumber' anyway other than plugging it in. It instantly pops out of sleep and works fine. I'll lock it and while I can see the always-on display the fingerprint reader will unlock it with no problems. This just started in the past hour for me. I've tried resetting the phone and the issue still pops up, and quickly at that.
Are you using a case or screen protector? Could be something interfering with the ambient light or proximity sensor causing the phone to think it's in your pocket at all times?
Edit:
Actually just tested this. Covered the top sensors and the always on display turned off and fingerprint sensor no longer worked just like you described

You may be right about that. I'm using a lifeproof case and I had just opened it up to clean off the inside (I had shown someone the phone earlier and dog hair found its way to the inside of the case). Funny thing is I turned it completely off and let it sit for a time, as opposed to the restart I did earlier, and it's working alright now. Maybe I just needed to reset it's calibration by resetting it?
Anyone know how to disable this weird dependence on the light sensor? I just don't understand why it would ever disable itself because it's dark.

I read this is a feature of the phone. The always on will turn off in your pocket or in a darkened room. Nice idea since you do not need to be using the juice then. You can test this in a dimmly lit room by cupping your hands over the display to block the light.

Sure, but it won't turn on even when I press the back button. Pretty obnoxious when I'm sitting in a blacked out room and I have to hold it up to the computer screen to activate it.
Yeah, I'm sorry I didn't read the thread carefully. That sucks. I'm in a dark room now watching video. The display turned off, I heard a notification, when I picked up the phone it came on. I do not like that that the led notifications stop. I'm not sure what happens to sound notifications when the always on goes off. I prefer to set the phone silent until a certain time in the AM and then use a sound profile to get notifications and a low volume.

I'm thinking it was the Lifeproof case I have on it. It all worked fine for a week then when I tested the case for waterproof it failed (the phone wasn't in it). I sent for another one and it seems to be working alright now. Maybe it had something to do with the inside of my case getting wet? I don't know.
Great! Enjoy your phone g why are we still calling these things phone?). I like the G5. Now that we have torur I am hoping their for some nice tweaks.
I've had this happen too and it made my life proof case useless because I couldn't use my phone with it on it I still have the issue once in a while but not nearly as often anymore
