Question about wifi passwords stored in online google backup? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have come to realise that whenever I perform a factory reset on any android phone my apps and wifi passwords are not restored.
However, whenever I have changed to a new phone all my apps were automatically installed for me, and my wifi passwords were restored too.
Over Christmas I resorted to performing a factory reset, I checked that the backups were enabled, and I forced a final backup of whatsapp, but didn't realise at the time was that that my wifi passwords were not restored after the reset.
Then, a week ago, I decided to buy a new phone. All my apps were magically reinstalled, then yesterday when I visited a relative I immediately noticed that my wifi passwords were not there.
I looked into my google account, and there are two recent backups from my previous phone, one pre-reset and one from after the reset. I would assume that the older backup still contains my passwords. I have looked online and there do seem to be ways to recover passwords from rooted phones, but I haven't found anything about recovering them from a google account.
Does anyone know how to do this, or is it something I should contact Google for? Also, am I possibly doing something wrong when performing a reset that is causing this pattern? I don't envisage doing one again for some time, but I would like to avoid this problem in future if possible.
Thank you in advance.

I don't know if this will be of any help to you but I happened across it so thought I'd share it with you.
Method 1. Backup Android WiFi passwords to Google Manually
Many Android phones and tablets enable you backup WiFi password to Google service. Just follow the easy steps below. Then, you can do it yourself.
Step 1 On your Android phone or tablet, tap Settings > Account. Find Google account and sign it in.
Step 2 Find Backup and reset. Tick Back up my data to backup WiFi passwords, app data, and settings to Google servers.
However, not all Android phones or tablets allows you to do that.

No Google option on Hero when creating contact

When i create a contact on my Hero there is no option to save as a Google contact, only Phone or SIM and so new contacts entered on the phone don't sync with Google.
I have tried clearing and re-entering Google account settings but no luck
Any suggestions??
please try to use another gmail account (to test the best would be, to use a newly created).. what happens then?
I had that a few months back and after a week of trying to find a fix for it the only solution anyone could come up with was a factory reset.
I did this and it fixed the problem - plus my phone was running a lot smoother and its been fine ever since!!

Several people have reported this issue in the past. It would seem that if you did not choose to sync contacts with Google at initial phone set up, you do not get the Google sync option and trying to set it up after the event doesn't help.
A wipe and fresh set up may help, though I'd advise a nandroid backup if you have a custom recovery image, so that you can restore if it doesn't help.

That wasnt my issue.... I had the option to start with and created many contacts on my phone - setting them up as a Google contact.
Suddenly after a few weeks of owning the phone, the Google option disappeared, leaving me with Phone or SIM.
A factory reset was the only thing I could find to fix it.
Cheers

Thanks Felikz - that worked.
I created a new googlemail account, deleted the cache in the Google Apps screen, logged in using the new account details then immediatley deleted the cache again and logged in using the original account details and hey presto when i create a contact the Google option is there and no need to wipe the phone!
Thanks again.

[Q] Restoring After Flashing

After following the various guides on how best to backup/flash/restore, I think I'm missing a step.
I use Titanium Backup to create backups prior to flashing, and then after applying a new ROM and selecting 'replace missing apps and data', I find myself left with quite a bit of re-setup to do. No mail accounts, preferences, et cetera are retained and I have to re-do everything after flashing.
Is there a step I'm missing or perhaps a different restore type?
I've read doing a restore of system data is bad; is that the case?
Thanks.

Are you only backing up user apps or are you backing up all user apps + system data? If its the first one then you wouldnt be backing up mail account information and such.

The latter, but I'm not restoring the system data. Are the cautions against doing that necessary?
If you dont restore the data then you wont have any of the settings for the apps saved. I am not 100% sure about things like mail accounts being saved or not, I know that things like wireless network settings arent saved. Also widgets and things that you set up on your homescreen wont be saved either unless you use a launcher like Launcher Pro and backup your homescreen. There will be some additional setup needed if you flash a new ROM even with TB.
Thanks you two.

I was able to restore mail. Everything was still backed up on titanium backup. I restored my apps and the data that went along with them. This didn't bring back mail though. If you go into backup/restore in titanium backup it lists all backed up items individually. Scroll down till you see E-mail Account settings. I clicked on this and restored it. this brought my mail accounts back. One problem was that if I went to settings/accounts and sync my microsoft outlook account was not showing up on there. The email was on my phone but wasn't listed in my accounts. My phone kept trying to sync contacts, calendar etc and it would always fail. I did have to delete this account and re-enter it into my phone.

[Q] How do I enable/restore calender again when disabling it deleted it?

I seem to have deleted my Google calender (or some part of it) from my android (specs below). I can’t seem to be able to restore it.
I had problems syncing a new calender and was trying to clear all cache etc in order to get it to sync. I went into Settings --> applications --> All --> ‘Calendar’ (I’ve always had two of those, so I took the one with data in it, the other always stands on 0.0B).
I cleared the data, force stopped it and then I pushed Disable. The button went from disable to enable and I restarted my phone thinking I could enable it after restart. After reboot the calendar had disappeared. Meaning: no icon in the ‘applications’ screen, when I go into the settings menu I only have one post named ‘calendar’ (the empty one). Calendar Storage still has content though and when I use widgets they seem to be able to access and sync to my main Google calender. When I use ‘month’ view I can see the different events I have in my calendar but I can’t edit anything from my phone. As soon as I try to actually access it I get the message ‘Unfortunately, TwLauncher has stopped’.
How do I restore, or enable the Calender again? I find it really disturbing that I don’t have a calender icon in ‘application’ anymore and that it seems to have completely disappeared.
I’ve tried clearing data, experimenting with the sync option and rebooting several times. I just can’t seem to get any results though. And I can't find it on play so I can't re-install it. Any insight on this?

First check via Google mail/calendar if u see ur appointments...
If u don't see it there, they wasn't saved it Google account and so just local, which u delete (no restore)
If u see them there, just delete and reactivate ur Google account on ur phone.
CHEERS ;-)

Might have worked had it been a sync problem only (my calendar is intact on the web). This however is a problem of the built-in calendar app disappearing. I removed the account and installed it again but the calendar did not appear.
I'm starting to think that factory reset is the only viable option.

Hmm but that's a bit much for just probs like this...
Hmm u checked the options in application > all > calendar and delete data again?
Then also checked if calendar sync is active (I think so but just an idea)
So last option before factory reset would be wiping the dalvik cache
If at all now luck... U can do it.
But would be really strange.
Much success ;-)

Lost Calendar Events
Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I have a similar issue/problem
I was syncing and unsyncing with my samsung to google calendars, then the next day I checked, I realized all my events disappeared.
I did not erase anything yet all my events were gone.
I did notice that something was occurring during the period that I lost my data.
I saw that my default Samsung browser on my smart phone went on a refresh loop on google home page. This was an issue on googles end and was resolved eventually.
This was one of google's problems. There would be an issue with google recognizing me logging on the google home page and gmail. This lasted for a week. I wonder if that caused my data to disappear?
There are a few links below describing what happened. I'm wondering if this is an issue with Google, samsung+google, or syncing in general.
if I can recover my lost events that would be great!
It seems like a lot of them has to do with smartphones syncing, which is what I did. Even if there isn’t a solution or a recovery for this, it would be great to at least get an understanding as to why this happened (so i can avoid it in the future). I am currently storing everything local to my phone and havne’t experienced any loss of information. It’s quite disconcerting that if I did use google calendars, at any moment, all my events can go missing.

Restore a recent backup, that way the period of events lost will be minimal; only events entered/altered after the time of the backup, obviously (and you can then sync to Google if you like to bring that back up to date).
So far as recovering your lost events goes, I doubt Google will restore an individuals calendar events. Tho you might as well ask them, they might surprise you. That way you then simply restore them to your phone.
Failing that, unless you've got a copy of the db file containing the calendar events still on the phone, can't see how you'd get them back unfortunately.
As to why, I'd be asking Google. I've been keeping my phone/Google calendar synced a couple of times a day over the year and a bit I've had my SGS2 & never had a problem from their end (a couple very early doors caused by me when I had to reset my phone & I hadn't synced to Google before doing the reset).
Thanks Mistah. Unfortunately I didnt make any backups with TiBu or a nandroid at that time.
I've asked google and you are correct, they dont do event restores.
Yes definitely my main concern is why it happened at all? So it never happened to you?....hmmm..
im wondering if it was something on Google's part or something I did.
Before I realized my calendar disappeared, I unsynched and erased the profile on my device so it only had the local calendar, then i synced again.
I wonder if my erasing that profile on my samsung caused the calendar to delete. Or maybe it didn't register or save?
I can't 100% recall if I saved the events on google's calendar or my local. but if I stored on my local, shouldnt the data still be there even after my sync and unsync or google calendar?

Yep. If you remove the Google a/c from your phone completely, it deletes the events attached to that Google a/c in the calendar app. When you add it back, you'll have an empty calendar until you sync it from Google.
So essentially, what's seemed to have happened is you've done that with the a/c on your phone, for whatever reason your events @ Google's end have been nuked, so when you've re-added the a/c back on your phone & gone to sync it, there's been nothing there to sync back to the phone.
If you untick 'show [email protected]' in the calendar app settings (as opposed to removing the a/c outright), exit the app & restart the app you end up with an empty calendar, because it must have a Google a/c linked. If you retick 'show [email protected]' your events show again because simply unticking it doesn't delete anything.
Removing the a/c outright from the phone must purge the DB file(s) (?? I presume) on the phone.
That's the most logical explanation I can come up with given what happened/the order it happened in with your phone.

I just tried it again. I removed the account from my phone. then resynced it. All the info from the calendar is still there.
Currently i store everything locally and only view local calendar (as you've said, untick google calendar).
Also not sure if this matters, I'm not using google calendars, I'm using samsung's stock calendar planner.
I cant see how removing the account from ur handheld would erase all events from your calendar. Isn't removing the account just deciding not to sync with it?

That's why I added (?? I presume) to that line in my PP about removing the account potentially wiping the DB files.
I doubt you'll end up finding out what happened/why it happened.
Anyhow, that's all I can offer.

ya, it was worth a shot to test out that theory.
back to square one i guess.
google is blaming on samsung's app causing the erase when syncing.

Google is stealing my info+ Why is my Google Account signing out every few days/week?

Hey everyone,
I have searched Google I have searched the forums here, and the most I can find is on Browsers signing people out, but this is not an Android Browser problem, it is the main Google account on my phone!
I don't get any errors, nothing force closes. I have wiped all data and started again etc etc. There doesn't seem to be any real reason or cause for this? I don't have any notification emails from Google or Playstore? Log cat detects nothing really abnormal? Every few days I have to re-sign in and re-sync my data which can be a real paint when I need a phone number urgently
I am running an I9305 International Galaxy S3, Android 4.3 stock deodexed, v6 supercharger scripts, Xposed framework, Wanam's mods. That is all. It does it regardless of v6 supercharger or Wanam's being installed? I can go anywhere between a few days to 1 week before I realise that contacts are missing and my account is disconnected without warning?
Notes: I uncheck the box to backup my apps data and settings always! If I clear dalvik cache in recovery it instantly signs me out of my Google account; upon re-booting everything else is retained except the main Google account? Something I really find quite annoying is that all boxes are checked by default in the account settings for sync and I have to manually un-select everything except my contacts and calendar......isn't there some sort of law against this sh!t? Like isn't Google steeling my information without my consent? It seems like it? I explicitly uncheck not to backup anything and they go ahead and take my stuff anyway including my photos which I don't want! Is there some edit or hack that I can do to the settings apk to make sure that this NEVER happens unless I specify? How should I contact Google to go about making a complaint?

Almost Clone ALL Settings and Data to New Phone?

Hey folks, I'm having trouble restoring all files to my new phone. I would have thought Android would be able to do this much easier. If I could, I'd love to just input my Google account password into a new phone, wait for syncing and then it would be like using the same home screen, same apps with all the same data and settings, but I've tried 3 methods so far and when I'm opening apps on the new phone, it still looks like I'm opening them for the first time ;(
I'm going from a Z3 Compact to a S7 Galaxy Active
On set up I did the NFC back to back which transferred all my Google account info and maybe some other info, but not my app data
I then installed Samsung Smart Switch, and this appeared to transfer some (not all) call logs and sms messages, but no data from WhatsApp or Shazam etc.
I then tried Helium and I see the list of disallowed apps is almost longer than the list of allowed apps, so don't see any point doing it this way either ;(
Is there any way to just almost CLONE the system you used and use it on the new phone? All settings and data the same? Is this possible at all?
Any feedback would be great
