I was thinking about picking up a used one of these for my mother for her birthday. I am torn between this and a Nexus 7, but I think she may like the larger size.
She already had a Galaxy S3 and a Kindle Touch. She mainly would just use it for Facebook, email, and some little BS games.
I this tablet still got enough power and support to last her a year or two? Also, would the stock rom with root be fine? She actually likes the touchwiz on the S3 so I would just keep that on the tablet as long as it's smooth enough.
I could get a used Tab for 150-200 or just pick up a brand new Nexus 7 for 200. What do you guys think?
Thank You

If she's okay with the 7 inch size, I would suggest the Nexus 7. I gave my mom my original Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 inch, with CM 10 rom and she loves it. She much prefers the 7 inch size to a 10 inch tablet, but that's just my mom.
The Tab 10.1 is a great device, and is definitely worth it for 150 bucks. The stock rom is fine, but I would go ahead and load CM 10 or 10.1 on there just because it will be a smoother and better experience.
All in all, if she is particular about a 10 inch tablet, the Tab 10.1 is a good buy. But if she is okay with a 7 inch tablet, I would go with the nexus 7.
Thanks for the reply. Today I ended up asking her if she liked my Tab 7.7 or my wife's Tab 8.9. She seemed to like the 8.9 better because it was something she would just use at home. I was going to offer her my 7.7 and then just pick up a Note 8.0 for myself, but I think she likes the bigger screens.
So that being the case. Does the 10.1 run with any serious lag? I keep reading reviews about how slow it can be. She won't be taxing it with too much stuff, but she doesn't like any lag either.

If you're keeping it completely stock, there may be a very slight lag just because of older hardware, but nothing terrible. If you do want to keep it stock, I would suggest using Nova Launcher, because it runs a lot smoother with transitions, swiping the homescreen, animations, etc. There's a free and a paid version of it.
If you want to flash a custom ROM on it, you may not get serious lag, but there will be glitches here and there like I mentioned before. For example, there is a slight flicker that happens on the screen every now and then, doesn't really bother me but it may bother some people. But the upside is that you gain a lot of features with CM 10.1 that you don't have with the stock touchwiz android 4.0 that comes with the Tab.
If you are wanting long term support I suggest the nexus 7 but as it is for your mom and see isn't going to be doing much according to your posts then get a tab 10.1 and put a custom rom on it.

Thanks for the help.
I ended up getting her a Tab 10.1 for $150 with a flip case. It is coming pre loaded with CM 10 I think. It is the 4.2 version I believe. I told the guy to just leave that on. I may try the stock rom with the Nova launcher though to start her off. Not sure if there are any touchwiz like roms made, so I guess it will just revert to stock GB and let it upgrade to ICS. All in all, I think she is going to be just fine with the stock version for what she does on it.

Remember to update the rom to the lastest version because there have been many bug fixes and new cyanogenmod nightlies get released.

The tab should be arriving today before I get home. I will download the JB V8 rom and install it tonight before giving it to her tomorrow. I haven't really looked to much into it yet, but it looks pretty stable. There doesn't seem to be that many bugs either.

It isn't JB. It's touchwiz based ICS 4.0.4.

Hi there, our tablet is becoming old. Currently I had installed the Nameless ROM and I love it, but the tablet is still a little laggy and more than a little when you open a few apps... Do you think that the ROMs based on Honeycomb could run smoother in our devices?
I tried to set up an 1GB swap partition but really don't feel any difference...
So, I think it could be a good idea to post if you wise guys know any tweaks or configurations to make our tablets more efficient devices
Thanks in advance

Hello !
In january 2014 I loved the port made by SGT7, JB 4.3.1/Cyano10.2, very smooth, no laggy but JB...:cyclops:
In july 2014 I decided to try Nameless, the only that release every night an updated rom, and keep alive everyday tab 10.1 with KK444... but in my own, too laggy also overclocked and youtube problems...
In september 2014 I tried OMNI Homemade by AAccount and... damn! I really loved it, smooth, human battery drain, no youtube problems, for now I keep the 20/09 3G release with installed stock browser.apk from Nameless...
Honeycomb rom don't run smooter and too outdated...
Thank you frank! I'll try the omni homemade one and I'll tell you [emoji6]
Please post questions in the Q & A section. You can post in my Q&A, Root, Stock rom thread or start a new thread for yoir question.
This keeps our development areas clean.

How did it go? I had the same experience with Nameless. Nice ROM, but laggy. I'm sure the older hardware is the issue.
Have you found any tweaks to help?
It was really nice and fast. But I'd sold it and change it for an iPad Air 2 [emoji5]️

My condolences! I had an iPod and they get outdated so quick and the apps no longer work because they don't support older OSes. That's the great thing about XDA. The apps last longer and you can usually root your device and upgrade it if need be to keep up more than with an iOS device.
Thanks for the update!
iPad Air 2 was announced two weeks ago. It will far outlast the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

I very seriously doubt that.
yuck. Not having luck.
Just went with CM11 all seems good except msps 9.1.2. Using maps 8.1.2 with no issue though.
I had the nameless rom installed as well. Yesterday i installed lollipop and it actually seems to be running a little quicker!
despite the alpha is still considered a medium-range phone, i want that people who have it to be proud!
why?
because the performance of this phone is a BEAST !!!
just look at the images uploaded from my device, and this is made with stock rom from samsung, no root and no tricks!
Just imagine what this can do over a rooted and/or custom rom !
All of you with a galaxy alpha should try and test a little your beast.
I also challenge you to beat my score, but the condition is to have the original rom, no root or other tricks!
In the last 6 months I had a nexus 5 (2013), HTC One M8 (2014) and now the Alpha Exynos. To be honest, other that the benchmark score, I feel that the Alpha is way more slow than the other two. Using it means constant waiting for something to load. I also feel that the TW is the bottleneck and I really don't understand why it has to take such a long time to load multitasking and/or google search (not to mention the constant stutters and hiccups). I have the latest software - unlocked version - and not rooted.
In terms of daily use is close to HTC One M7 which is a 2013 phone (witch I had before nexus 5).
I'm hoping that 5.0.1 and ART to change this. If not, I'm selling it.
Cheers.
try this:
1- go to developer options and disable all 3 animation settings that are set to 1x by default!
2- install a thirdparty launcher, i recommend nova launcher ...and
3- you dont have to sell it if you achieve request no. 1 and 2, maby you will enjoy it, it is really a premium phone, nice looking and impressing performance as you see my main thread.
i have the exynos also and belive me is way more performant then qualcomm version, try it both before buying!
best regards

I'm a Chinese user of the A2001 variant. Hydrogen OS got updated this week to 1.1.0. I soon found that it is a very good build compared to the version that comes with the phone and Oxygen OS 2.0.0. Nearly everything is better: OPT is now buttery smooth, home key is more sensitive, compatibility improves and the temperature is cooler (battery life hasn't been tested yet). It's good to see OPT staying on the right track. Hope it helps regain some confidence.
If you happened to have a Chinese variant, simply go for the OTA. If you want to switch from Oxygen OS, flash the full package
https://mega.nz/#!8tczGAqC!J0zVOkdTfE6mq9wHE3raT1kimrOIqP-eNIfHbWcnW1w
and Gapps (I'm using Gapps mininal for android 5.x), then the supersu 2.46 for root access. Clean flash is advised.
Since I'm staying in UK, the baseband on Chinese variant are not working properly for me. Sometimes LTE signal falls down to 3G and never comes back. I flashed the baseband from Oxygen OS 2.0.0 (download link) and the problem seems to be solved. You need to go into fastboot mode and then
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
Enjoy!

I tried HydrogenOS for a day. The first build of 1.1.0 was a bit buggy, but I noticed that the 2nd build came out this week which I assume is much better. I find the lack of widgets and tray icons very annoying. I have widgets that I like to glance at which provide information without opening an app, for example weather and aqi. The tray only displays the number of notifications you have, not what they are. More annoying than that, if you don't set an application to priority, it doesn't even count towards that number. I changed the default SMS app and didn't even realise I had a message waiting as there was no tray icon showing when the tray was closed! They have gone WAY to far on over simplifying things and have removed functionality.

These are not things that should be unique to HydrogenOS. They should also be fixed in the next build of OxygenOS. What for you makes the Hydrogen skin better than Oxygen?
Innovations are never bad. Even if you do not like any changes, the flexibility of android solves anything. Install third party launcher brings back widget.
I agree that the axe of icon tray is 'annoying' to one who is used to how old android works, however this is a matter of taste rather than quality. While majority of the people reject the windows 8 for its lack of start menu, still there are folks enjoying the idea of an unified experience. That was where Windows 10 comes from.
Hydrogen and Oxygen are not likely maintained by the same team. Hydrogen keeps getting updated every week (to mimick the mode found on MIUI) or two while Oxygen is set to a lower priority. It is like a mainstream version vs long term support version. With Hydrogen you will keep receiving newest feature and improvments. Anyway, I was just recommending what's better at the moment. It does not mean that Hydrogen will be inherently better than Oxygen at any time.

i wouldnt call it crap cause there are things htc got it right, screen quality and speaker. But the m9 really gets uncomfortable to hold after 15 mins of light use (facebook, web, messaging).
the battery of this 1+2 is by far very good, much better than my n6. And its not uncomfortable to hold after long time of using, thats great.:good:
one thing i noticed after installing a kernel managing app is that the big cores are almost not used, and there is just 2 cores online at standby frequency (384). The LITTLE cores do almost (99%) of the work. But that could just be cause of my light usage, the phone performs better than the n6, so no complain
haha , just can wait for mine OP2

yet I'm not sure where I can find the best rom!
currently I got a unlocked i9300 running a stock i9300XXEMD2 rom on 4.1.2 with a UK "3.co" on the power up and shutdown on the device
thing is I really like the look of this older sammy stock rom! I don't want to flash to those strange newer "white" verisons. I enjoy the look of the black and using old youtube and maps
yet I know there are better custom roms the clear the bloat. I'm looking for one that retains the look and feel of the galaxy s3 when it came out but is more uptodate, has a callrecorder built into secphone (when I install its not working) and overall improves ram use/user preformence, battery etc.
can someone point me in a good direction? there is so much available and hard to sort thru
Neat ROM is probably your best bet. Remember not Neat ROM AOSP. Its the one that its download size is about 1GB.
It is based on the latest stock ROM for S3 which is Android 4.3 and has new features integrated into the ROM (Quad multiwindow , smart features etc from newer Galaxy S series).
It also has the old Black theme similar to your ROM
Neat Rom looks interesting. Why is there an "ASOP" version? What's the difference?
Any others?
If your device is sim locked you may want to unlock it before you mess with it.
In 2 years i found stock 4.3 to be the best rom for this device.
device is unlocked and rooted.
strange how I bought it used... it was on stock UK rom... but its been flashed and rooted before.... rooting it didn't take very long... it was easy...
I have root access and its nice, but i'm looking for something that easier on the battery, cleaner bloat removed and has excellent features... but doesn't stray far from that fine stock look of an s3!
My personal best is archidroid rom, speed & stability all the way. Stock rom was slow and buggy. It took me about 2 whole minutes from unlocking to sending msg. You shld give it a try. I flashed it on 7 diff devices. Its asop, it isnt wht you are looking but certanly the worth a look

Rooted. Stock 4.3. Honestly its the best rom. If you want really good battery then don't root it. Don't even debloat it, dont change the kernel. Just disable facebook app and it'll serve you well.
Xposed is a big battery killer.

Stay with stock 4.3 and remove unwanted bloat, don't use mods, its the source of bugs and instability.
If you want Kitkat then go with back-to-n00t, same thing with 4.3 but it was ported from the Korean LTE version, very stable and smooth, everything works fine too, because the rom includes all the Samsung blobs
