We now have a complimentary app on the app store for this A4D App.
What is A4D?
The goal of A4D is for us to move beyond just N1 make it an all in one flashing/upgrading/android utility. We just added a ROM library with MD5s. We are not going to be hosting the actual ROMs by themselves so if you report a dead link, they will be taken down (after a number of reports). You can also add your own ROMs as well into the library.
The ROM library will be supported by both Android and Desktop App. We are rewriting the Desktop apps so that we can do all 3 platforms in one, Linux, Windows, and Mac. You'll love the layout of the app. That's all we can say for now.
Oh one more thing. The android app won the best android app award at the Mobile in the Middle Hack-a-thon over the weekend in Chicago (on 3/6/2010).
I would like you guys to try out the app and tell us feedbacks. Also feel free to add your own ROMs to the Database and tell us how we can make the DB better. There a number of features we are trying to add as well. But with our full time jobs... things are going a little slower than we wanted. Sorry.
Requirements to run the app on Android: Amon_RA's recovery. That's what we tested it with.

Add md5 check. Make it in this way: user have to enter/copy-past md5 hashsum from forum/site. Program calculates md5 of image and says image is good or bad. Also you can disable flashing with out this check. ;-)

Does it flash the radio too? I mean CyanogenMod has two files a radio ROM and a CyanogenMod ROM. Does it flash both of them to the phone?

Radio flash is in there we took it out. May do so in the next release but radio flashing is dangerous (can brick phones) so...

Does it flash ROM's from your desktop or copy them over and just run the commands on the phone for you?
I ask, as I'm having some problems flashing now, based round a slightly faulty Micro SD card. Does it store backups on the phone or on your desktop PC?
This program is written so you don't have to do command line commands. Everything else remains the same. If you are doing a Nand backup, it goes where it used to go.
I would recommend fixing your "slightly faulty Micro SD card" by getting a new card.

maybe the screens should be bigger as quite hard to see clearly whats available.

Edit: Okay, can't run on Mac, of course will in VMware, can you please make this mac native too... It would be great as per what MooMoo said, for all who are lazy...

But I don't use command line now. I didn't realise anyone did. Do you not just boot into RA Recovery and flash from there?

There will be a mac port sometime this week. I can most likely port to linux too but if you know linux and if you have to use wrapper, you have an issue

I tried to install it but got a system update required....
extracted the sdk to the folder C:\android-sdk-windows
extracted android4dummies and clicked setup
I get a pop up with the following:
unable to install or run the application. the application requires that system assembly system.data, entry version 3.5.0.0 be installed in the global system cache.....???
What do I do now?
Sounds like the app uses .NET framework 3.5.
So goto microsoft website an get 3.5 .Net Framework.

You do need .Net 3.5. It should have asked you, if not installed that as a prerequisite.
I went to MS and downloaded the .net 3.5 installed it (apparently it was already on my pc, so instead of installing I tried to repair it. no success....

Can you send us a screenshot.
Do not unzip into C:\android-sdk-windows. App will install SDK or search for the SDK there.
Unzip on your desktop or temp and install from there.
just to be clear, I unzipped adroid sdk and placed in the mentioned location. the android4dummies is extracted on the desktop and executed from there..
so should I remove the SDK and retry?

This is my first time working with cygwin and Android Kitchen and I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything that will royally brick my s4. I have attached screenshots of my journey for reference.
I started with the stock ROM from you know where, version 4.4.2 (i337MOYAFNC1) and proceeded to remove the KNOX bootloader (using instructions from SilviuMik). I skipped the last step where it is re-md5, to continue on to the kitchen..
Using the de-knoxed tar file, I created a working folder for the ROM in the kitchen. It started unpacking, everthing went well. When i was prompted to choose if I wanted to extract the CSC, I said no.. because the DiskInternals Linux reader was giving me an error saying along the lines of cant read disk..
From my working folder, I proceeded to root & busybox, all went well. I then deodexed both the system apps and framework, all went well.
lastly, I made a build from the working folder. Selected all default options while doing so (see pictures) , signed the freshly minted rom and voila.
If the repacking was successful there is not much to fear about.
(You may want to lookup if there is any dependents (in the rom) by using the removed knox bootloader (atleast remove the knox apks I guess)
the CSC is really nothing important:
A common short code (CSC) is a short telephone number, usually consisting of five digits, that is used to address SMS and MMS messages from a cellular telephone. Common short codes may also be called mobile short codes or short numbers. Each common short code is designed to be unique to each operator.

Just include the one from the stockrom. btw, I have successfully manually unpacked the CSC file a year ago or so with simg2img, it only contained crap (samsung only files for altering behavior in TW rom and bloatware), the hidden partition or preload partition may also contain unwanted crap btw
So go ahead and flash it, your phone will not get bricked by this in any way.

Oh I thought you were building an odin rom? zip you say?
Anyways, just remove em from the system folder and test it's result. You can always test roms without damaging your device at any time, read: it's impossible for a ROM to brick a phone, the thing that can brick it is the kernel, but only if using a kernel from an other device or so.
so don't be afraid to test it, if it doesn't work just continue your work. if it works, good joob

One caveat to this, and this mostly applies to Verizon and AT&T users, but if you have upgraded to KitKat and kept root using SuperSu's survival mode and your planning to test a rom using Safestrap, you better make sure that the su binary is in xbin and bin (.ext/.su) and that the Superuser.apk is in /system/app. Also make sure that the permissions are set correctly for su (chmod 06755 chown 0.0) and have busybox in the rom as well, or at least have busybox install in the updater-script and make sure everything symlinks correctly.
The best thing to do when testing roms to avoid having to worry about losing root is to download Chainfire's SuperSu zip and flash it after you flash your rom you're testing (but before it reboots into the rom for the first time) the reason I even mention all of this is because currently we (Verizon and AT&T users) have no way to root a device thats taken a complete 4.4.2 OTA.

Seriously? wow, thanks for mentioning, I can't believe what a pricks Verizon and AT&T are. Same count for Samsung that handles knox regulation in the USA (while not in other countries). In the USA you get pretty much screwed by the carriers and manufacturers the hard way.
In The Netherlands (where I live) it's even illegal to sell smartphones that are not unlocked by default. and the only thing a carrier may do is adding a CSC (Consumer Software Customization) package. This should be in the USA as well!
In the USA companies get to private / independent it seems. they should be regulated by national government rules. instead of making their own. (this keeps the crap like the problem you described away)
But Samsung should be regulated as well, there is no chance that will happen (south-korea), and their phones will contain more and more backdoors / suspicious daemons / methods of screwing you and so on, because who checks it, no one. Oh yes only someone, the NSA that adds even more of this stuff, like a VPN Interceptor, which no one is waiting for as well.
Anyways, life (or actually companies) is (are) a *****. Only strict regulation could solve this, but who still believes in regulation after seeing what the NSA all did, they broke like every single rule and forced companies to merge their crap (most likely, or a huge payment, but no single company actually likes that)
- NSA 'was allowed' to break in all PC's because that where outside the USA. that just ridiculous but true
- NSA applied their 'jizz' to all super famous apps like Facebook.
Even though it sounds like I say USA is the culprit thats not true, The netherlands have BREIN, which is the anti piracy company.

a. destroyed the piratebay for the whole world (even though it's recuping soon)
b. have done a million requests on removing uploaded movies (on newsgroups)

The NSA can screw a cow. USA is Freedom? Like hell. I live here and am starting to become ashamed of my country. I hate the government, more directly this president. Anyway, whats a VPN Interceptor? Sounds scary..
But about the OP, can you build an Odin tar with the older Bootloaders in and newer system images to remove knox warranty and allow users to upgrade without screwing themselves? Last i checked, you needed a way to sign the tar file to match with the current bootloader checking.

CSC is "Country/Carrier Specific Config", not "common short code"
While it's not so important, skipping it may produce many side effects in normal work.
The common way to deal with CSC is extract it and pre-integrate into system - that's what stock recovery is doing upon first boot after flash.

This doesn't always work. I used to try this with rooted dump/repacks for S4, N2 and E4GT and we got mixed results not including Samsung's cache.img. In Sprint's case this defaulted the carrier to XAS, an internal use only code that doesn't fully enable everything for Sprint. I don't recall if this was on images with a blank data.img only or "nodata" cases as well.

I've did it on GT-I9100, GT-I9300, SHV-E210K, GT-N7100, SHV-E330S. It worked always. Sometimes CSC is multi-CSC where you have to choose correct version.
I didn't use operator-specific models. So probably some additional steps required. But anyway, CSC from cache partition is simply copied to system by recovery. To be more precise, you can check command file in cache.img - this is where "magic" happens
Hi devs, i first time cooked prerooted deodexed rom from stock 4.4.2 rom using cygwin and andriod kitchen. every thing went well. my only question is can i remove modem from output zip as i don't want to use that modem.

As a follow up to the status 7 error, I spent quite a while figuring out what caused it and how to solve it. I posted this on another thread but ill quote myself here.
The status 7 failed to mount /preload error and why it happens:
Lets take a minute to go over why this happens and what it means. First what is /preload anyways? Well lets take a look at how it gets mounted, consider mount points below:
mount("ext4", "EMMC", "/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system", "/system");
mount("ext4", "EMMC", "/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/hidden", "/preload");
We can infer from the point arguements that /preload is the mount point for the "hidden" partition. Well then what is this "hidden" partition then you ask? Well hidden contains some useless crap Samsung uses to verify integrity of the system partition when in recovery
So the idea is to wipe data/factory reset in recovery followed by making sure to flash hidden.img.ext4 prior to cache.img.ext4. I think my inclusion of cache.img.ext4 on accident in the first tar is the root of the cause so ive uploaded a new one that doesnt contain it so it wont fail at step 1.
So essentially you cant flash a a full-wipe or no-wipe Odin tar to go back. You have to use a custom made Odin tar. Also for people getting the status 7 error where /preload fails to mount after flashing cache the solution is to boot into stock recovery and factory data reset followed by flashing hidden.img.ext4 via Odin or Heimdall.

Hi,
I'm actually trying to port Firefox OS 2.1 on the Nexus 7 2013 (aka "flo"), and after managed to download and compile the sources, I am facing a problem at the last step. Instead of flashing Firefox OS on my Nexus via the conventional method (using flash.sh), I would like to create a recovery-flashable zip file (as is often seen with custom ROMs). However, I have no idea how to build one, and the analysis of some zip files does not really helped me to understand which files to include and which script to write.

Due to a large project that came my way at work, I've been unable to work on this however I hope to in a few weeks after we demo our new apps. If you want to check mine out it's here http://goo.gl/gioiDv however the only real issue with mine which is quite fixable was that I used the wrong version of the Gaia, and webapps. You can use mine as a template really, here is how:
1. Build FF OS
2. Now when building ( I am going from memory here so ask if you ha e questions), pass the argument otapackage and you'll get a "flashable" update.zip in your out dir.
3. Find either a fully built version of ff for any device but make sure its the same version, OR build Gaia yourself, see the official docs for how to do that as they explain it very well.
4. From that you go through the output and find the webapps dir.
5. Copy webapps to your built otapckage at /system/b2g/webapps.
6. Now I'd use either my update script from the link I gave you (after looking through and updating anything that needs updated because mine is a few months old.) Make sure there is nothing in there about formatting data or anything (cause you don't want to lose that!) And after repackaging (use a kitchen or whatever method you prefer), you'll have a flashable Firefox zip.
Its a process so use a little trial and error and you'll overcome any issues you find. Any questions let me know.

I'm an Android firmware developer (you can see my posts here in xda) that got a yoga book yesterday. For me it works at it should (by now) but my hacker soul speak to me and said: "at least take a look to see what you can get from this device". I don't have many time, so I can't spend time doing roms or fixing things by myself, but I can share with you some info I get and help you with my knowledge if someone is interested in "play" with this device.
First of all, I'm not responsable of anything that you can break following these steps. Almost all of them are tested and with some common sense you will not break anything, and if you break anything I will try to help you to fix it (if you are polite), but this is a work in progress and hacking and the possibility of brick the device is always there.
I only have the Android version without LTE, so I only tested in my Book.
So, here we go:

2) OTA Images
You can get OTA images directly from lenovo servers. Just open your browser and paste this url:

Change device model if needed (LenovoYB1-X90F or LenovoYB1-X90L)
Change curfirmwarever to a valid OLD firmware, this way you will get the next one in age.

These images are not full ota images, they are diff versions. This means that we can't use them to mod the image, or recover a bricked device, but this is a first step
3) Custom images
We don't have real sources to build a custom image (the lenovo's open source files are useless), but this doesn't mean that we couldn't modify stock images to take out useless apks or get better performance.
We can get this using an Android Kitchen and a full update image for the device.
As Android kitchen you can use SuperR kitchen (https://forum.xda-developers.com/ap...chen-superr-s-kitchen-v1-1-50-v2-1-6-t3597434)
As full image, I only tested the one here (https://easy-firmware.com/index.php?a=browse&b=category&id=19521) because I can't download any newer one.
I tested uncompressing it, deodexing the apks and doing a new image. But I don't test it in the device because I need to install twrp to flash the new image and I don't have time to test. But this should work, I did it many times so if someone is interested I can give steps to do it and support for testing.
If someone can get the latest full images, send then to me and maybe I can get some time to do some tests.

Sorry, my knowledge of Windows is only user level . Install it in personal computer to play games .
But I really don't know why people wants to run Windows there, it will go slowly than Android and its less touch oriented... but I suppose that this is a chat for another thread

Have you tried running it through Crossover? It may be in its infancy but i have got a few apps running OK with it.
I have the full "YB1-X90F_USR_S000196_1611040312_WW06_BP_ROW" I can upload somewhere if anyone can suggest a good site to do so without signing up? The file is about 2.5gb
It will be great if we could get the latest version, because maybe these older versions have older files that we have updated in our tablets.
Mixing files could give unknown problems
The current TWRP is based on the new Yoga Tab 3
I am starting to think they do not do full roms for this in the same way they do for a lot of their other devices.
We know the otas are available from tabdl.ota.lenovomm.com/dls/v6/ and are named according to the 2 builds that it bridges. As easy-firmware had the december full rom under the file name B1-X90F_USR_S000196_1611040312_WW06_BP_ROW-flashfiles.zip I had hoped that I could work out the file path to pull it down.
There were some interesting ideas here, https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/how-download-stock-roms-lenovos-ota-t3109507 but it seems there is a difference between phonedl.ota and tabdl.ota
Queries to full roms that work for phones, don't seem to work for the yoga book.
Anyone with more web knowledge able to pick this up? I am not sure the files are there but I feel they should be.

Update: the downloads seem to be hosted via CloudFront. An Amazon service, but I can not find out a way of listing the available files. The latest full rom would be

But the Last 8 chars are random and we do not know what they are.

Hey, I should mention that I have some files that you may find helpful; I got them from the easy firmware website. They're all the .img files for each partition in Android (ie. boot.img, cache.img, config.img, factory.img, recovery.img, system.img) as well as: biosupdate.fv, bootloader, firmware.bin and gpt.bin. However, these of course aren't in the normal "flashable .zip ROM" format. So unless you know how to take apart these .img files they aren't very useful. If you need any more help or have any other questions about how far we've come on our own, feel free to ask. danjac also has great knowledge of our efforts.
Yes, I know how to use them, unpack, modify, etc. But what I want is the latest version, no a old version (I hav these files too). If you have them I can do some changes, debloat, etc.
Anyway, I see little interest in custom roms in this forum ( probably because it's not a device with a lot of users or the users are not the techy kind), so I prefer to help others with info than do a custom rom that only 2 or 3 people will use. Doing custom roms is a time hungry task and probably it doesnt worth the effort. Anyway this device is not full of bloatware like samsung ones, so it useable as it is.
As I said in my first post if anyone is interested I can give some hints and support to modify the full image (but only the latest one).
It's so sad that there are only a few interested owners of this tab - it's such a nice device but i fear the day lenovo decides to end their support for it. There will be no custom roms to switch to and keep the device alive - it will be a soon to be bit of old tech garbage BTW. I still use my Asus Transformer Prime because of the nice community
@NiffStipples I fully agree. This device is so powerful and its a suprise that it is invisible to the "market". In my humple opinion the normal ROMs aren't that bad besides missing updates but I would love to see all the power served through a custom rom. unfortunately programming is not my business

Interesting - is Crossover good (and does it require factory reset)?
Hi, It works well with some things and not others. Often the why and where are not obvious. It is basically "wine" the layer that allows some windows apps to run on a linux install. Tweeked to work with android. Just an install to put crossover on. Then another install (Within crossover), to put you app on crossover. If it doesn't work out of the box, there windows libraries you can switch out and dependencies you can install. (Eg: directx , .net) Even if your not technical. I would say get on the beta program and give it a try.

It seems like it's not enabled in Lenovo's default kernel. Could we get to recompile the kernel with this option on? i'm not a big android/ROM expert but i surfed the open_source_code folder from Lenovo and it seemed, to me, that we could rebuild the Kernel at least.
This could really change things!

short prologue: I am working on my bachelor thesis and must develop a service that keeps a record of how often a user actively uses the application permission settings of Android 6 and above. The main goal is to have a custom ROM which can be deployed on several phones to conduct a survey.
I identified the file where these settings are stored:

I want to set up a service running a FileObserver to keep track of the changes in this file. The file is not accessible by normal applications (permission -rw-------) but the service has to run without superuser.
So I want to sign my application with the platform key to obtain system permissions. I am totally clear on the purpose of this security concept and I know that I cannot get the original key. The resulting ROM is not going to be public and is used only in a controlled group for research purposes.
My question is how to exchange the signature/key with what the system applications of my actual ROM are signed. So that I sign my own apk with the same key so it has the special permission. I found the answer to this exact question on stackoverflow but it is quite old and I did not succeed with this explanation.
Do you know if there is another, more current approach?

Just have the app built as part of the rom. This will make sure they both have the same signature.

What do you mean by "built as part of the rom"? I cannot build the rom from aosp because the device should run the original MIUI firmware. I used SuperR's Kitchen to modify the rom. Is this not suitable?
That will not work no. Maybe you could try using their patch rom setup. As very little is done with miui here, you mugjt be better off asking in n their forums.

Can you explain, why this wont work? I supposed I just have to exchange all the signed apk files. When I re-sign them with apksigner then they also obtain the self-signed certificate containing the public key. So why is this not enough? Is there another instance in the OS which checks the app signature on boot?
The entire system partition uses the same signature. So I guess you could go through and recompile everything with the new key but I doubt it would work. Many oem system apps won't work without their oem signature.
Like I said. You maybe better off asking over in the miui forums as very little is done here for it.
