Just ordered a Nexus 6p (did I make a bad decision?) - Nexus 6P General

So, I had $200 and I was looking for an android device that can keep me going for a few months til I’m eligibility for an upgrade with my carrier.
After looking around for a few hours, I narrowed my decision down between the Honor 7X and the Nexus 6P.
Ultimately I decided to go for the Nexus 6p due to USB type-C, stock android and dual front facing speakers (3 major things I look for in phones now)
I ordered my 6P from an eBay seller who states the device is in 9/10 cosmetic condition, fully functional and will be here on Saturday.
After searching the web a little more I noticed that a lot of people are talking about the battery shutdown issue.
I remember buying a Nexus 6p at launch and didn’t have this issue, which is why I decided to order it again. But, now I’m kinda scared and wondering if I made the wrong decision.
Can someone shed some light as to whether every Nexus 6P is affected at some point and if replacing the battery will fix this issue.

6P is a great phone, just keep in mind the battery issue (replaceable and relatively cheap) and - more serious - bootloop issue: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guide-fix-nexus-6p-bootloop-death-blod-t3640279 <- read it.
My two cents: install AccuBattery in order to check your battery's health (if below ~ 70%, replace it or you'll suffer from random shutdowns), unlock the bootloader (search here how to), flash TWRP and keep the bootloop fix handy. If things go south, flash it and at least you can have your phone alive again, despite the poor performance.

I owned a htc 10 but gave it up a little while ago. Had iPhone for 2 years and that was my DD. I got this Nexus 6p 64gb used for 150 $ and I thought the same thing. Hopefully the battery doesn't fail on me , but so far so good. It's been about a month and no complaints. I think you will enjoy the phone . Development seems to have died down a bit or we are just late to the party but I actually can't find anything I dislike.

For a 2 year old device, the development is pretty decent. Switch to f2fs. Try crDroid or ABC Rom + f2fs kernel from ABC Rom.

I'm in the same situation looking for a phone for my father. 6p def seems like the best for budget if it didn't have those battery problems. my other choice is also the 7x but I can tell 6p is more of a phone my father would like because of the front speakers. might have to go with 7x because it can be bought new and will probably have less problems+batter battery. just worse sound and skin. looking into the cheaper Xperia z phones next

yeah .. u did lol

How do u change to f2fs? Noob over here

Using my phone since 2016 April.
(Android stock 8.1)
With Pixel 2 launcher https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-rootless-pixel-2-launcher-google-t3688393 and Pixel Camera https://forum.xda-developers.com/ne...d-camera-nx-v4-google-camera-zsl-hdr-t3494435 it works awesome.
This is the best phone I have ever used and also my first phone I used so long...
I did not have any battery issiues. But, i had a microphone issiue. But i fixed it by editing build.prop file after rooted. So far, its working perfect and i do not need a phone...
But do not forget that: 2-3 years later, battery performance will be not the same.

Why I Got A 2nd Nexus 6P...

So something was on my mind and I thought I would spill on XDA...
Im a phone junkie. Ive probably had most major flagship devices pass through my hands. But theres something about the 6P.
6 Months ago in May i got my first 6p. I am also a guy who has 2 phones. One to tinker and one to have as my daily driver. The year before i had bought a Moto X Style and I loved the device. Was bloody amazing! But the battery life didnt do it for me so decided to look to the future and went with a Nexus 6P. At that time my daily driver was the S7 Edge.
So August rolls around and the Note 7 is announced & released. The UK got it 2 weeks later than the US. Unfortunately I got rid of my S7 Edge for it while keeping my Nexus 6P. I was one of the unlucky people who got a Note 7 before it was recalled and subsequently had my Note 7 almost blow up on me. I got a replacement and very quickly I saw the Note 7 had been discontinued and the device had to be returned In replacement, I got a Iphone 7 256Gb which I lasted 36 hours with before I couldnt take it anymore and traded it to CEX.
So with my favourite series of devices recalled and with my change to a device that I couldnt get on with, I was in open market to buy a new phone. I had the choice between anything that CEX had Android wise. They even had a Moto Z on the day I went to see them, but heres why i decided to buy the Nexus 6P in 128Gb while still having my 32 Gb edtion.

These devices to me are still relevant in the market and im not bothered about the SD810 issues. My devices never run that hot. Plus add in the fact that I get unlimited tethering, these devices for me are why I love android. These kill the Iphone IMHO.
Congratz, one for each hand! they are classics!
I read the title and i was like "Well do enlighten me, why do you have two nexus 6P".
Not disappointed.
I actually though of a Samsung S7 when I went to buy my 6P, but the screensize wasn't what I expected (I wanted a bigger screen and the edges took some space off it one way or another), ended up with the 6P which was always my first considered choice.
I gotta ask though, why do you say the Note 7 almost blew up on you? Did you experience any problems that would suggest that would happen?

Long story but....
My N7 died on me randomly while i was using it... The software died. I tried flashing Custom Rom Nothing... TWRP would boot but would freeze
Used kies to restore software, but even that didnt work. My device then began emitting a burning smell. I managed to power down the device and make it safe..
I sent it Sammie after they got in contact with me, they sent out another device. Then the full recall happened a second time. I almost ended up like all those other devices you see burned out.
FWIW I call them the twins xd
First off, let me say I am a phone addict. Haha. In the last 11 months I have owned 4 Nexus 6P's. I keep coming back to them. Right now I have one along with my S7 edge. If the edge was a bit smoother, especially with a SD820, it would be a near perfect phone.

I had a Note7 when it first launched and was very disappointed when I had to return it due to the recall. The one I received got so hot to the touch when charging I didn't want to take the chance of it exploding. I loved the phone but I went and got a 7 Plus as my personal phone instead. But I missed android and having owned and returned a Nexus 6P for the Note7 I decided I wanted it back. So when it came time to choose a work phone it was no question that I went for a 6P. The stock android experience is the best and I didn't realize how much I missed it until I got the 6P back in my hands.

I am thinking about 2nd hand Samsung S7, HTC 10 , OnePlus 3 , Pixel XL.
(I think my 6P battery start degraded.)
Its just an amazing device
I have an S7 Edge also and keep going back to the 6P. I love the screen on the S7E but the curved screen I keep touching with my fingers holding it and stuff goes haywire, It's maddening. I don't find the battery life on the S7E that great (as some do). I'm not a heavy user so it bothers me to drop 50-60% during the day when I've done virtually nothing with the device but some hangouts messages, texts and a couple conf calls. It will last all day, just bothers me draining that much with little use
I'm actually thinking of getting a second one. Maybe a 128gb version this time. I just look at the new pixel and I'm not excited. I was more intrigued by the HTC 10 to be honest.

With the Pixels system software now available on the 6P and 7.1.1 running much better than 7.0 ,i find very little reason to splash out $1000 on a Pixel. The 6P is still very flagship at the end of 2016, it's still good for another year. If it had OIS it'd be perfect.

Hi guys,
This is my short story why I buy my a second Nexus 6P.
I killed my old Nexus 6P with 128gb in Turkey and I was from end January until August in Turkey. When I was back I think which phone I should buy. My favorites are the HTC 10 (HTC Boy since HTC Desire => M9, Oneplus3 and the Nexus 6p. OnePlus have no AOSP, the HTC 10 los the beautiful design with the fingerprint sensor at the front. Than I remember my old Nexus 6P and the nice community (thanks to all devs). Now I have bought a new Nexus 6P with 64Gb. Maybe next year a new HTC with fingerprint sensor on the back or the Pixel

Your next phone after the 6p?

I've had the 6p for about A year and a half basically since it came out. Think it's about that time to hang up it's cape this screen burn-in is really annoying me and that outdated processor is starting to show it's age. Would love to hear everyone's opinion on their next phone. I was thinking about the Pixel 2 myself if priced fairly ,or maybe the Note 8 , or the upcoming Essential Phone .
the nexus 6p has taught me how greatly important it is for phones to have a removable battery. I not will pay another $550+ for a smartphone, only to barely get 2 hours of SOT after a year of using it. I really hate planned obsolescence. I am trying to find a high end phone with removable battery other than LG ( bootloop ). But I think it's hard to find one in 2017 and later.
The pixel 2 will not be priced fairly. I would go for the note 8 if money is not an issue or the next oneplus
Yea tell me about it ! Battery life is horrible , buddy of mine at work has a S7 edge that gets double the battery life as my phone
I'm not getting rid of my 6p until i have to. Best phone I've ever had. The only reason people have bad battery life is because your battery is getting old, deal with it, replace it and your good to go again. Just like ANY OTHER sealed phone eventually. Anyone who complains about the processor being outdated as well just wants to justify getting a new phone for no reason IMHO. I haven't found anything yet that will tax my processor enough to have to get something new. Even if my 6p gives up the ghost for good, I'll probably buy another used one to replace it rather than spending insane amounts of money on something new and "improved"

Give it time, his battery will give out one day to. EVERYTHING has a life span.
I just got an RMA so I'll likely keep it awhile. Depends on my luck of the draw with the replacement. If it sucks I'll grab the Oneplus 5 or note.
I doubt we see removable batteries in any higher end device again. Companies claim design but reality is most of these phones aren't water proof and planned obsolesce especially now that device upgrades really aren't necessary every year is a powerful motivator. Unless of course you got a lemon that shuts off at 30% or gets 2 hours SOT or plain doesn't boot after a year or so. I'm hesitant to buy another nexus / pixel after my 6p and 5x.
It's really hard for me not to get an s8 right now.
probably a pixel 2 or 3 by the time they come out and whether my beloved 6p won't decide to die on me.
Pixel 2 or OnePlus 5
Getting the oneplus 5 once it is released.
Pixel 2 for me .
Looks like I'll be keeping my 6p for a while still. The battery life my not be top notch, but I get 4 to 5 hours of screen on time regularly, which is enough for me, especially when I can charge it for 0-100% in like 1.5 hours. My biggest hold up on an upgrade is I demand stereo front facing speakers, a good camera (which the 6p has when using the modded camera nx app), and a no bull**** as close to stock os as possible. The Pixel ticked all those boxes expect stereo front facing speakers so I passed on it, and it doesn't look like the Pixel 2 will be any different.
Honestly the design, speakers and the price of the pixel killed it for me , that phone looks horrible honestly there's nothing on the market right now that i would wanna pick up except the s8+ and that's pushing it because I only love using stock Android. Boy oh boy if they had an s8+ with stock Android with regular timely updates .... lol in a perfect world.
OnePlus 5 or perhaps Pixel 2. Still happy with my 6P though!
Keeping my fingers crossed on the Pixel 2. I would gladly get a S8 if I could run completely stock Android without root (and with monthly updates). Security is super critical for me for numerous reasons, unrooted for the first time a few months ago, haven't missed it.
That having been said, this week I purchased a $299 Moto G5 Plus (64GB/4GB) for someone, and I'm super impressed with quality and speed. Bluetooth and software is a little wonky, last security update was January, hoping for a ROM update, but since it's Moto G, probably not gonna get many updates. Honestly, if it were a Nexus release, I'd be super happy with it, as the hardware is great.

I picked up a new Moto Z on Verizon for $300 (for my wife).
Great phone if you can tolerate a locked bootloader.
Pixel 2, OnePlus 5 or Essential. Considering all of them
The Essential is out of the question for me. I like to take pictures, and the quality of the pictures I've seen from that phone are not that great of quality.
I'm looking at the OnePlus 5. The samples from them have been a heck of a lot better. I've been checking out the 3T forums to see what kind of roms are offered and its not bad looking at all. I'm going to get the 5 and sell my 6p on Swappa. I just hope it has the horizontal dual camera.
Not the iPlus 5 anymore. The OnePlus 5 with a copycat iPhone 7 style is so sad. And with only a small 3,000mAh battery. Screw that.
I switched to an iPhone 7+ last month and couldn't be more pleased. Tried to hold out until the iPhone 8 came out but the 6P was becoming too awful to be a daily driver for me. Lag lag and more lag whenever it is asked to do anything but the simplest of tasks. Then it heats up and throttles creating even more lag and drains the battery. But the main reason for me abandoning ship was because of my DJI Mavic Pro. Nougat and DJI Go 4 don't mix... I'm still keeping the 6P because it used to be a great phone but somewhere along the line, Google ruined it probably in hopes that we would switch to Pixel. Well I switched alright and probably for good! With iOS, everything just works. Only bad part is there's not a community like XDA Developers. Which is why I'm trolling the forums with my 6P lol.

Time to Upgrade ?!!

I bought my nexus 6p on January 2015 and still work perfect with no issues except the performance , it seems cant handle new heavy apps and games , in the other hand multitasking become useless over the time so i have to clear apps frequently .
In this Thread i am looking for your advice >> should i wait for any new device with new generation snapdragon processor 845 ? to get most of the performance ?
or
buy Pixel 2 XL ?
or
wait the Pixel 3?!!!!
i will take your answers seriously .
I just bought a Pixel 2 XL and it blows the 6P out of the water in performance.
Also it supports LTE-A already if I'm not mistaking even though when don't have that yet in the US.

when the original pixel got released... the dual front-facing speakers on my 6P kept me from upgrading
and now Google released the pixel 2 with dual speakers but no headphone jack !
its like they deliberately forcing me not to upgrade -_-
.........................................................
i would still recommend the pixel 2 xl over any other device in the market right now.

I would still be on my N6P were it not for the boot loop issue. My battery had degraded to 90% but would still last a full day for my normal use. The N6P is a powerful, fast phone. If all you have are performance issues, then I would back up the phone and completely wipe it. Use a full image and install it fresh. Returning your phone to stock will make it perform like a new phone, guaranteed. When and if the phone finally succumbs to the boot loop issue, THEN replace it with the new best/fastest phone on the market at that time. The Pixel 2 XL is a phenomenal phone and I love everything about it, BUT I would still be using the N6P if it hadn't developed a hardware issue. I was able to use the 4 core fix to get it running and Google gave me a $155 trade-in, a $100 credit at the Google Store, and a free Google Mini speaker. I paid $400 for the N6P new (Amazon Prime day) so I don't have any bad feelings. I've had every Google phone since the Galaxy and this was the first one to give up on me before I was way past ready to upgrade. With the latest price drops on the P2XL, I would say you can afford to wait a bit and see if they drop further or offer better incentives. Cheers.
Huawei replaced my battery and USB port/daughterboard for free a few months ago (RIGHT before my warranty expired)...but you're right. the phone is painfully slow when playing certain games.
have you seen any good deals on swappa?

Until the 31st (?), Google has a trade in program on pixel 2/XL. 6P that turns on with no screen cracks is giving $144.(https://store.google.com/config/pix...gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CMyK-tbjqNgCFYIkhwodgksAtQ). That leaves a lot but not as much. For about two months, we've been battling that battery deterioration. It's now cutting off at 50% battery. It was a first day Google store purchase, but we're still gonna try Google support since this is a well-known hardware issue. When that fails, we'll have to replace the battery. We have $0. for a new phone at the moment. It was such a great phone----until it wasn't.

I'm moving on to OnePlus 5T. The 6P battery issue have become annoying. I have a replacement battery on the way but lets face it, the Snapdragon 810 is just an inefficient processor and sooner or later I would probably have battery issues again or worse.
I would love to stay with Google (I've owned Nexus 4, 5 & 6P) but the Pixel phone's asking price seems unreasonable vs what I use my smartphone for.
Goodbye to guaranteed software updates & support. I've been spoiled by Google too much in that regard but that's the way it goes sometimes.

I'm moving onto Pixel 2 XL. For the past few months, I've had the strangest issue with my 6p and I can't seem to solve it. The phone will shut off randomly. But it's not completely shut off. I need to press and hold onto the power button twice before i can get it to turn on again. If I leave it in that "shut off" mode, the phone gets warm after some time, so it's almost as if it's in some sort of a suspended state. I know it's not a battery issue because when the phone is turned on again, it's at the same battery percentage. I've tried multiple roms and still had the same issue. I've tried not installing any custom kernels with no luck. The breaking point was when this "shut off" happened overnight and i didn't hear the alarm in the morning. Don't want to deal with it anymore. The Pixel can't be delivered soon enough.
wait for a price drop of pixel 2.
when it goes down to 499$ get it.

Love this phone but getting a bit old now, What to replace with?

Ive had the nexus 6p for a while now and had to replace the battery numerous times (mostly due to my using wireless charging that seems to eat batteries). i recently updated it with lineage 15.1 which seems to be working fine but having replaced the battery yet again im thinking it might be about time to look for a replacement phone. i did fancy a honor but found that the bootloader unlocking is now a problem so thats out the equation. question is what should i consider for my next phone? it needs a decent size screen, rootable / flashable, and most of all it needs to be affordable. any suggestions?
OnePlus 6T which should be announced in a couple of weeks?
It's been 3 months since I changed my nexus 6P for a Oneplus 6, and I'm really happy, I had a little hesitation because of the notch, but as she is small she does not bother.
The optimization of OxygenOs (Android Pie ) is really great, 0 lags in apps and games.
You can root it with magisk
For me it's definitely going to be the oneplus 6t end of November or December I am buying it for sure.
I'm going to replace mine with a Pixel 3 XL. I don't care if it's ugly as hell, I'd rather stick with a Google device. I'd like to avoid making the mistake of switching to another manufacturer again, even if they have a good reputation like OnePlus. It's never as good as having a Nexus/Pixel device straight from Google.

im leaning the same way too, i did have a go with a honor that looked fine until i found there is no more bootloader unlocks so that went back. i do quite like the look of oneplus but im not that rich sadly so im thinking a second hand pixel might be the way forward. ive just replaced the battery in the 6p again so that should be ok for now but in the end i do need to start looking at an update / upgrade. thanks for the replies :good:

I'm doing a similar thing. I bought the Nexus 6p just before the OG Pixel came out. In fact I received it in the mail on launch day.
If I don't see any deals soon from Google, I'm just going to pick up a Pixel 2 XL in New/mint condition on Swappa. They're already dropping pretty low in price.

One plus doesn't work with Verizon.
I am waiting for a 7nm chip from Qualcomm and Supervooc to be implemented in Oneplus. Maybe Oneplus 7t . Replaced my battery 3 months back and it works fine for now. I cannot live without HDR+ though. Google has really spoiled us.
I also keep wondering what to replace my 6p with.... But I just went ahead and put a second new battery in today... There's life in this 3 year old yet!
If someone came out with a flat screened phone as to have tempered glass screen protectors properly functional again, I might go for that...

Xiaomi Mi A2

Ive had the nexus 6p for a while now and had to replace the battery numerous times (mostly due to my using wireless charging that seems to eat batteries). i recently updated it with lineage 15.1 which seems to be working fine but having replaced the battery yet again im thinking it might be about time to look for a replacement phone. i did fancy a honor but found that the bootloader unlocking is now a problem so thats out the equation. question is what should i consider for my next phone? it needs a decent size screen, rootable / flashable, and most of all it needs to be affordable. any suggestions?

I sold my Nexus 6P and buy a Xiaomi Mi A2, I'm so happy with this new phone and now I got Android 9 Pie (Beta)
This is an affordable phone, nice specs and takes fine photos and I love the stabilization of the videos.

For me too, but Pixel are very expensive and the current desing is not good (in my opinion), because the normal is small and the XL is very ugly with this notch.
The Xiaomi Mi A2 is an Android One mobile, in this month I got the november patch the same day that Pixel and Nexus. For security patch is faster.
At this moment I get Android 9 Pie (beta) and in the end of this month the stable version will be released. I know, Pie is on Pixel some months ago, but for affordable phone only wait 3 months to get Pie and is not too bad, other expensive phones take same or much more time to get it.

I was looking at the OnePlus 6t as well, as on of our IT techs just got it, however it doesn't work on the Sprint network either
I am looking at the Poco F1. The development on it is thriving. More active than N6P.
I just ordered my OnePlus 6T. Should arrive on Monday
It was a pleasure to flash ROMs alongside you gentlemen. I'll see some of you on the 6T forums ?
Ended up with OP 6T too. At a certain point I got fed up with constantly comparing specs and went with good overall performance and reasonably standard Android. Not happy at all with losing 3.5mm jack but there's the adapter and so be it.
I frankly fail to see why nobody offers a flagship phone with Android One.
Currently in the same boat. Im about to jump ship from Verizon to Total Wireless (I know, same network but at least its much cheaper)
The OnePlus 6T can apparently work on Verizon as long as you contact Verizon and make sure they set it as a "CDMA Less device".
Not sure how i could make that happen if Im on Total Wireless. Backup plan is a 2XL or 3XL. 2XL only because the main dev on ABC ROM just got a 2XL so its guaranteed to be ported. 3XL development not sure how long that will take.

Nexus 6P the last fun phone on XDA?

Is it just me or is the Nexus 6p the last real flashers paradise? I feel this phone got supported to the moon and back for ROMs and kernels and even now still continues to get so much love. Heck there are more pie ROMs on the forums for this phone then phones that actually officially got pie.
It's really making me hesitant to upgrade even though I just unfortunately got plagued with the blod two weeks ago. Running a nice pie rom with the occasional reboot but heck I'm still having a good time. What's everyone else whose still rocking a 6p thinking?
I just got one because the used prices are unbelievable on this thing.
I've had audio issues since the beginning (low volume on earpiece and muffled audio through mic), so I cannot use this phone as a phone without using wired or wireless headsets.
Everything else has been great. Good camera, nice screen, premium body.
I am looking forward to the day when I will buy a new phone and start making calls with confidence
By far the best phone I have ever owned!!! And I have had every Galaxy from the s2 and note 1 to the s7 and note 6. And a LG g2x. I didn't even root this phone till a few month ago. It just worked fine the way it was. The only reason I rooted was because I knew end of life updates was approaching and so I wanted to continue on with lineage 15.1 and soon 16.
The 6p just went in for a new battery because my wife has it now. I was gifted a og pixel. So far the pixel is a great phone too

Totally true. The prices took a deep dive over the last month. Refurbished going for $60 to $80. Be aware refurbished doesn't mean a new battery. Have fun while it lasts or be willing to shell out an extra $50 minimum. It's a solid buy even with a battery repair.
Yes and No. 6T has plenty of activity for a phone just released. If you check Github, 6T already has repos for device for LineageOS based ROMs and AOSP ROMs. There are already custom kernels available. Anyone who can follow instructions on the wonderful tutorials posted on XDA can start porting any ROM to 6T.
The add-on and mods is thriving already. Quick look? 6T stereo speaker mod, uses the earpiece speaker to create stereo sound. Ported Pixel cam to 6T to get the nightmode and HDR+ for 6T. Notification light mod using ambient display to compensate for lack of notification LED. Changing color and animation for the on-screen fingerprint. There are more, it's active.
And have to consider this. For a lot of the 6T users on XDA, the OxgenOS is already the best Android OS available. I'm likely to be in the same boat, from what I've seen, I don't see any reason to use a custom rom. I'll flash a custom kernel, magisk, adblocker, the stereo speaker mod and the Pixel Camera. With that, it's the closest to perfect SD 845 equipped large phablet on the market.

Im think and feel like you OP.This is "The One" for me.Is a elegant device, good display, octa core and i had not mention yet the biggest reason why i love the 6P.....THE SPEAKERS!!!! I mean, right now theres not a single device out there that sound better than my 6P.Everytime i use YouTube around public you then can see people looking for that awesome sound. It is like they thinking " what the fu#$ is that"..lol.I change the battery 4 month ago and still running with 8 cores(default).I went a little far about this and bought the HTC 10,the ZTE axon 7 mini and Sony Xperia Performance.Do you guys know why? Because all of those devices have front stereo speakers. Then i begin to root all those devices to be able to use Viper. In the end, theres not competition for the 6P.Im using pie rom,and i will keep using this bad boy until it dies.

Yup, I've done the same. I've put the Pixel Experience Rom on my Nexus 6P and it works a treat. Still a good phone in 2019 despite being three years old. Oh yeah also, dual front facing stereo speakers and a gorgeous quad HD screen on a phone which came out 3 years ago! You still don't see that with phones being released now at what the Nexus 6P costs. Them 2 features alone make this device stand out, except for the battery/early shutdown problems which i don't have
