Help with framework-res.apk - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, i have a custom rom ( rros 5), i wanted to disable the round icons , so i had to edit a value in framework-res.apk.
So i did the steps with apk tool, i also copied the original meta-inf , and manifest xml before pushing it, i got bootloop, but luckily i backed up the original apk, so basically i pushed it again , but the problem is , even after pushing the backed framework-res.apk, i still got bootloop ! Can someone help me ? i don't want to reflash the rom again .

Thread closed as per OP request.

[Q] Issues restoring framework-res.apk

Hey Guys,
I have been attempting to mod my framework-res.apk to try and add a percent battery icon (unsuccessfuly so far). Here is my issue, after finding that my modded framework file isnt working properly, I go to try and restore the original. After restoring the original I still get tons of FC's and the only way to get things back to normal is to restore my backup from CWM.
The method I am using to replace my framework-res.apk is to use a root explorer (ES File Manager) to copy the file to /system/ then from there I modify the permissions and then move the file to the framework folder, overwriting the existing file. After this, I reboot the phone.
My question is, why is my original framework-res.apk file causing force closes? It is starting to make me think that even my modded files are ok, but that the issue is arising in the manual transfer.
Sorry if the answer is posted elsewhere, I googled and was only finding issues with the apk not being compiled correctly, but that shouldnt be an issue with the original apk.
*EDIT* I figured it out. It appears it was because Jkay Deluxe was installed. I decided to reflash the rom and try with a fresh copy of the framework-res.apk and everything appears to be working now.

[Q] How to create theme for custom rom ?

After reading from articles , now more or less I got some idea on how to create a theme for a custom rom , but still there's something I don't know .
1) First , I extract files from a rom using 7zip . Then , I extract out the content of framework-res.apk and make some modifies / changes to those .png files . So , after completed those modifies , I just open archieve on the original framework-res.apk , drag and drop the one I modified to replace the original one ? After that , how do I pack it in .zip file that can be updated in open recovery ? .xml file shouldn't be modified right ?
2) What if I do this , I get a theme.zip made for the rom , and then I extract the contents of the theme.zip using 7zip , then again I modify the .png files and after completed , I packed it again by open archieve on the original theme.zip , drag and drop the one I modified to replace the original one ? Does this works ?
3) What if I modify other system apps such as calender.apk ? Using the same method , extract , modify , drag and drop , replace , then again how do I pack it in .zip file that can be updated in open recovery ? Is there any "bond" between those system apps and framework-res.apk ? Can I just modify anyone of both ? Or I have to modify both system apps and framework-res.apk to get it works ?
Thanks

Here's what I know so far. I'm still trying to learn as much as I can:
1) If you are making a theme by trying to replace pngs in an existing framework-res.apk file, you can do this: open the apk file within your zip program, and edit the apk there (so you'll have two zip windows open. Once the apk is updated, close the most recent zip window. The first zip window should recognize that you've updated the apk file, and ask you to update the first zip window.
I've been playing around with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432152
What it allows you to do is modify the files in Windows Explorer (or whatever file explorer you're using), and then let the script do the rest of the work for you. The actions it can do are: decompile apk, recompile apk, sign apk, created update.zip.
The xml files need to be edited if you want to achieve certain effects. For example, in the Gingerbread theme there are some edits that have to be made to a few xml files in order to achieve white text on black backgrounds on the popup menus. The nice thing about the framework flasher link from above is that it 'compiles' the files (meaning it will check if the .9.pngs are correct, and if your xml files point to correct assets), so you can go about doing xml edits and stuff without fear of bootlooping.
2) Yes, this should work.
3) If the updater script is a generic script (that is, it moves everything from the /system folder to /system, and /data to /data), then you can create directories in the update.zip that refer to whatever apk you want to replace, with the same structure as in Android. The cool thing about Metamorph, from what I gather, is that you can create folder structures with just the assets you want to replace, rather than the entire apk. This means that if you want to replace just a few images in Phone.apk, for example, you create a directory in the Metamorph script under /system/app/Phone/res/drawable-hdpi and add the images you want to replace in there. I think that's the way I want to create my themes from now on, I just need to figure out how to do it correctly
I tried the framework flasher , after located the framework-res.apk and run RunMe , it shows echo is off , the log process shows 'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
Do you have Java installed?

No , I have no Java installed . Tried to install before but couldn't get the right version .
Java
I've yet to find one all inclusive theming reference. Just a lot of searching & reading & trial & error. This might be a good place to get started.
Edit: You'll also want to get the Android SDK

BTW , since I'm still too new to theming , I'm thinking of making my first step by changing the colour of a completed theme . This is what I'm currently doing : I extracted the files content of your DarkFroyo.zip and then extracted it's framework-res.apk . ( IT'S YOUR THEME , CAN YOU GIVE ME THE PERMISSION TO DO THIS ? ) I'm changing the original orange colour of all those icon to light pink using photoshop , then replace the original one . The files type are .png . Also , I changed the battery status icon and status bar background . However , I haven't touch those .xml files , I just leave it there . So after I complete , do I just flash it right away in my phone or I need to doing something like "sign" ? As for now , I don't have any idea about "sign" .

Changing the color in Photoshop is fine for normal ".png"s but ".9.png"s are special, they have a 1 pixel border with guides that define how they are stretched to fill a space (& are only visible is a decompiled state). Just editing a .9.png in Photoshop might break the .9 patch. Since you are trying to modify my theme it might also be wise to grab the "undo.zip" so if (when) something you try bootloops the phone you can flash the undo to get back to stock. I know had numerous bootloops when I was first starting out (still do occasionally).

Hey 3rdstring. I noticed you release a new version of your theme for the ODEXED version of CM6. For APKs that have ODEX files (such as Phone), are you deodexing them using apktool, then reodexing them? A brief pointer would be nice!

No the only thing I'm changing in any of the odexed apks are images. I use a Metamorph file with ZipThemer to build the update.zip (& undo) after I've decompiled / recomfiled framework-res for the white menu text & 10% battery increments.

The reason I ask is b/c I tried pushing a modified Phone.apk to CM6, but it didn't pick up any of the changes I added (images only). It made me think that the assets were already prebuilt in the odex file, so changing the apk wouldn't do anything unless the odex file was changed too.
I also tried applying a metamorph script on top of the odex ROM, but it caused a lot of fcs. I think it's b/c of the ODEXing too.
EDIT: My bad. Phone.apk is the calling screen, Contacts.apk is the dialer + contacts. DOH!!!
My edits are pushed correctly

[Q] SystemUI.apk won't load - Jiayu G4 JB 4.2.2

Hi, I already took a look around this forum and searched for this problem on Google, but i can't find an useful solution that is not "reinstall the ROM"
and i would like to avoid it.
I'm trying to edit my SystemUI.apk, to make the status-bar background back to black. (right now it's trasparent and it's driving me crazy)
with apktool i installed the framework-res.apk and the systemui.apk, then i extracted the systemui.apk, modified it, i placed inside the resources.arsc then recompiled it, i took the apk into systemui/dist and placed back on my cellphone, then i replaced the original SystemUI.apk with fx root explorer and my jiayu rebooted by himself.
Then I saw that the status bar, notifications, wallpaper, everything, was disappeared, i can't toggle anymore my smartphone to the pc.
There was a backup of the systemui.apk, systemui.odex and framework-res.apk, so i placed back the systemui.apk and the systemui.odex (like always).
Then i rebooted the smartphone manually but the wallpaper/statusbar/etc. (all the informations inside systemui.apk) still won't load.
I tried replacing them again, shutting down, remove the battery, rebooting, replace the framework, i tried everything that was coming to mind to me.
On the internet i found a way to solve this problem with ADB toggle, but I can't find a way to make it work: it tells me that the application is installed on the SDCard where i don't even have an SDCard attached.
and i'm not able to install the SystemUI.apk using Terminal emulator either (another solution found on the internet).
Is there someone that knows how to solve this problem without installing the rom again? i would like to avoid the problem to put back in all of the stuff i have on my smartphone... there's maybe a way to regenerate the contents inside system/app without the entire rom.
Putting that stuff back in manually won't work...

EDIT: Solved... Please delete this post and sorry for the troubles... The solution was easy: application list -> systemui -> delete updates and cache -> reboot.

Editing Settings.apk - Signing possible or custom ROM needed?

Hi guys,
my father recently bought a so-called China phone (Doogee X5max) that comes with several malwares right out of the box.
Most of the are quite easy to remove, two of them give me the creeps.
I am no pro when it comes to Android and so I stumbled across several problems.
First of all I managed to remove the malware from Settings.apk and SystemUI.apk by decompiling, editing and odexing the files and compiling them again. Easy going...
So far so good.
Now for the hard part.
How to get those files back into the ROM? Since those files need to be resigned with the same certificate that was used signing all the other system files I am kind of stuck here. Resigning the files with Zipsigner (using all possible types, "platform", etc.) did not work which leads me to the conclusion that Doogee did not use the AOSP certificates to sign their ROM. Am I right?
The only possible solution seems to be creating a custom ROM out of the Doogee X5max stock ROM. Is this correct?
I googled a lot but have not found up-to-date or understandable manuals/instructions on how to do this.
Can someone please help me or give me a hint at least?
Thanks in andvance

After recompiling your modded apk, unzip it and the original apk, replace everything in the original apk with what is in your modded apk except meta-inf and Android manifest. Zip back up, change it from .zip to .apk. That is what you use to replace your system apk. That only goes for system apks. You sign the others.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
Before giving this a chance, just one question: By "Android manifest" I suppose you mean manifest.ms?
Kind regards

The manifest.ms resides inside the META-INF folder...
Trying to installl the so manipulated original apk via adb results in [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES].
Am I supposed to uninstall the original settings.apk from the device first (which I did) or just replace the original apk on the device with the newly created one and delete the odex in oat/arm?
Thanks in advance

You leave the original meta-inf like I said. You use the original apk replacing everything in it with the modded stuff, res, resource.arsc if any and any classes.dexs. Don't worry about any oat folders.

Hi Tulsadiver,
I followed your advice and replaced everything except the menta-inf folder from the original apk. Then I copied over my modded apk and restarted the device (just to be sure).
After rebooting the Settings icon was gone from my homescreen and the app drawer, leaving me unable to start the settings.
Tapping the seetings.apk using a file browser left me with the error, that there was an error while parsing...

I actually said, everything but the original meta-inf folder and original Android manifest....
Steps
Decompile apk.
Edit your apk
Recompile apk.
Unzip both modded and original apk
Delete everything in the original apk except meta-inf and Android manifest.
Copy everything from modded apk over to original apk except for the meta-inf and Android manifest.
Zip it back up, change it from .zip to .apk.
Copy this apk to the root of your phone.
Change permission to 0644
Copy/Move to replace the existing apk.
Reboot

Hi again,
thanks for your efforts by the way
That's exactly what I did except taking the original androidmanifest.xml since I had to change some things in it...
Will the whole process be not applicable then?

mmmh, maybe if will have to find out all system apks that use the same certificate framework-res.apk does and resign them with a new cert including the modded system.apk.
I was trying to find a way around that, but maybe I have to go the hard way...
I think that should solve my problem, what do you think?
