Verizon or Unlocked - Usable Storage - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

On a fresh wipe/install, what is the usable internal storage on the 64gb device (Verizon version or unlocked)?
Are there any apps when installed that cannot be moved to the SD?
Thanks!

Bump! Can anyone help please?

Sorry, booted right into Smart Switch so no idea how much storage it has in a newborn state. Is a few gigs really your deciding factor on which version to buy? I would think it would boil down more to wanting wifi calling and accept Verizon bloat or no wifi calling and no Verizon apps.

Thanks for the response. Not the difference between the versions, but seeing if I should explore another device instead of the S9 that has more storage (since I can't use an international device with Verizon). I was just curious if I'm going to have 5gb or 30gb free internally on the 64gb device. I know the SD card will allow photos and music to be saved there, but don't know what apps can't be moved.

Definitely more than 5 GB free either way. After all my apps are installed on the unlocked one, I have 40 GB free. Verizon bloat can't possibly add more than 10 GB, so you're definitely in the 30+ GB free side of things even on Verizon.

That's perfect, thank you!

I'm using the unlocked version on Verizon and I had around 45gb free I believe before I added all my junk. With my s8 plus i got it from Verizon and I'm pretty sure i could uninstall most of the bloat with it. Hope that helps some.

Have roughly 35GB free after a massive amount of installs. If it's stating it correct should have 52GB on a clean install not including the default apps and updates installed.

Great, thanks all. S9+ it is

I have the Verizon S9+ and was pleasantly surprised how little bloat there was. Most of the pre-installed Verizon apps can be uninstalled. Same with Samsung apps (except apps like Messages, Mail, Calendar, etc.). Off the top of my head, the only Verizon app I couldn't uninstall is Caller ID which I simply had to disable. My fully loaded up phone still has 40GB+ internal memory available. And while the Verizon S9+ does not support adoptable storage, I can safely use the SD card for photo storage as Google Photos (my preferred solution) is able to manage photos on the SD card. On my S7 Edge, Photos was unable to gain permission to delete photos from the SD card. I really wanted the 128GB version of the phone but it is not available in the US from any carrier - but I can totally get by with the 64GB version and a 128GB SD card for photos, videos, movies, etc.

Samsung Unlocked 64GB phone: ~50GB Free.
Sadly I just started installing my apps but I remember looking at storage space before when I first put in an SD Card and without anything really installed. I believe it said I was using 15GB of system data. So that would be around 50GB of free space on a fresh phone.

[Q] SIM Card possibly Bad. switching to new SIM. What I need to know First.

my phone is having telephony issues...data works fine *most of the time* (sometimes drops on AOKP / AOSP Roms) but calling out and texting people is a guessing game to see if it will say SENDING for 5 minutes before giving me the expected and dreaded window, "message could not be sent"
This happens on all custom ROMS and even on the stock Vigor HTC sense ROM. Im S-Off too. Running Newts HTC OnE xXx Sense 4.1 ROM.
The SIM card i'm using in my Rezound now was previously in my (now motherboard DOA) Thunderbolt and is almost 2 years old (got the T-Bolt a month after it came out)
I bought the Rezound used and the guy wanted to keep his SIM. So I don't have a spare one.
I'm thinking after 2 years the SIM card is going out and needs to be replaced..(if you think the problem is caused by something else please let me know!)..but here is a few things I need to know before calling Verizon.
1. First off. CAN I DO THIS?
2. WILL activating a new SIM card in the old SIM card's place TAKE AWAY MY UNLIMITED DATA?. (This is the biggest factor here)
3. will activating a new SIM change my contract or put me on a new billing plan? (same as previous)
Thanks for all your help!...I don't trust calling Verizon because they will tell me anything to get me off my old plan. Once I'm properly informed. I will take the necessary steps to solve this problem
SIM cards are free and don't affect your contract in any way. There are some problems that sending you a new SIM is an early step in the standard troubleshooting procedure.

So they can activate it without changing my contract or taking away my unlimited data? and should I switch to a stock ROM before I call verizon?

That would be the "safe" way. That way if they ask you to do any specific troubleshooting, you don't have to worry about faking it.

I called Verizon Tech Support...and the woman it sounds like a "service issue" and the SIM card is part of the "service" ...and she said that would not change my contract at all. She ordered me a new SIM card and it should arrive at my house on Wednesday. (but most likely it will be delayed till Thursday because of Sandy)
I don't know if this idea applies, but it's worth looking into or maybe someone who knows more than me can comment but I know that on my iPad, when I loaded too many apps on it and didn't leave any 'room' for apps to operate, the iPad acted the same way as you've described.
I'm wondering if maybe the SD card you're using, is at or near its limit and if apps on Android phones act in a similar manner? Please check and let us know how much free space you have on your SD card.
The other thing it could be is oxidation on contacts within your phone. You mentioned that you've had it for a couple years. When you take the battery cover off, you can see several little gold contacts that connect to your battery cover which is the location of the antenna. If the contacts are corroded even the smallest amount, the impedance of the connections could be enough to degrade antenna performance. It would be difficult to see. You might want to try another battery cover if you have one, and see if that helps?

Pictures on SD card glitch

So I put my SD card from my s5 in my g3 and every so often I'll open my gallery and find some are corrupted. I thought it was only happening to the s5 pix, but now I think it's happening to g3 pix.
Anyone else? Should I just format?

Yep, same issue. I formatted sd card in the phone and no issues since.
How do you format a card in the phone?
I told the g3 to erase card, but couldn't find an option to have it format. Ive been able to load music to it, and it seems to play fine, just curious if there's something else I should do. My card is a Samsung Pro 64GB.
This is happening on my mother's LG G3 from T-Mobile. Glad to know I'm not the only one affected by this. So if the pictures aren't saved to SD card it won't corrupt?

I'm going to bump this because I've always had the option to format the microSD card in all of my other phones. Did they just rename it, or did Verizon have that pulled on their version?
Youre not the only one!
Youre not the only one!! I have the white AT&T version, and it does that most of the time! I don't think it's the SD's fault cuz it works fine on my S5 and i even reformatted it. I believe it's on LG's fault...:crying: Mine overheats so much also...
Same issue here. I tried a few sd card access apps/xposed mod but none seemed to work.
After a reformat everything was OK. Its definitely a pain though.
I'm sure this is an old thread, but I just thought I would chime in with the corruption issue, even after a reformat of the card.
I've seen other threads where the card itself was suspect based on its price (~$10 on Amazon vs. cards that were in the mid $40+ range) which would make the card suspect as far as quality/storage/etc., but wouldn't the corruption issue have also been present when the card was in my Verizon Galaxy S3? I currently have the black Sprint LG G3, and before this, I had the white Verizon LG G3, but the pictures were corrupting on both G3 models, regardless of carrier.

[Q] can I make a rooted phone into a tablet (to work with tablet SIM)?

I would like to take my Moto G (or ANY phone under 5") and make it look like a tablet to T-Mobile. Is that possible?
I like to use a small phone when I'm working out -- because I want Pocket Casts and music and Endomondo (which needs a tiny bit of data). I got an AirVoice plan, which is cheap, but AirVoice is annoying, because it constantly gives you popup messages saying how much data you just used.
I have a T-Mobile tablet SIM which gives me 200mb free per month, and it'd be awesome if I could use that. But it doesn't work in a phone. When I plug it in I get a voicemail saying my access is restricted. And it's about the same with an AT&T tablet SIM.
I'm surprised I can't find any other threads about this, seeing a T-Mobile gives free tablet data, and AT&T has much cheaper tablet plans...
Any help is appreciated. I'd also be happy if I could find a tablet under 5" that takes a SIM. But I don't see any modern Galaxy Player, and certainly nothing that takes a SIM.

I have no idea if what you're trying to do is possible at all, but I can tell you that it's unlikely having root will give you any solution. Regarding things like SIMs, carrier locks/unlocking, and your plans, it's all separate from Android. When you put your SIM in your device, they know what kind of device it's in. And if the SIM is made only for tablets, they can program that into the SIM too.
---------- Post added at 11:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:50 PM ----------
I've been thinking about this, and I thought of a possible solution, but I honestly have no idea id this'll work.
When Samsung came out with their Milk music streaming app, someone figured out how to make it work on any device. Technically speaking, Milk is only available for a few (high end) phones. However, you can side-load it to any Samsung phone and it'll work. You can also use it on any phone brand, but you have to do 2 things:
1. Be rooted.
2. Edit your build.prop to change what Android recognizes your device as being.
If you're already rooted, try doing something like this. My recommendation would be to change your device's ID/name to a Nexus 7, since changing it to something like the Samsung Tab could cause compatibility issues with other apps. Changing it to anything could cause compatibility issues, but I'd expect less trouble with the Nexus 7.
From what I can gather, these are the names/lines you should try editing. MAKE A BACK-UP FIRST.
ro.product.model=Nexus 7
ro.product.brand=google
But again, I have no idea if this will actually work. I don't know if the SIM or T-Mobile detects your device from the build.prop or from something in the firmware.
Thanks... Sounds like a good idea to try.
But apparently Motorola's unlocker web app is down... I emailed them to ask about not being able to unlock my bootloader and got:
The "your device does not qualify for unlocking" issue is due to a back-end outage we are currently experiencing, We are working on restoring this. I will post an update when the server is back online in this thread in the Motorola Owner's Forums Developer Community:

Blah.
Just thought I'd follow up.
I got my Moto G unlocked.
My AT&T sim that I use in my Nexus 7 LTE doesn't work in the Moto G. I get a voicemail notification, but internet access doesn't work. My T-Mobile tablet sim works, though. So I can get my free 200MB per month.
But it still pops up a voicemail notification about restricted access or something every single time I reboot the phone, and I can't delete it so the icon just stays there. But I was able to setup Tasker to clear the cache of the Phone process every time I reboot, which makes the little icon go away.
So now I'm happy. I can use my Moto G as an iPod, and the 200MB of data per month is plenty for just using Endomondo and syncinc the position of my podcasts in Pocket Casts (since I'm only actually downloading new content while I'm on Wi-Fi).

SD card keeps getting corrupted

I've lost the contents of my SD card three times now with my XT1528. I've tried two different cards (Kingston 16Gb class 6, Samsung 32Gb class 10) and yet I keep losing anything stored on my cards. Have had no problems with other handsets with these same two cards. Thanks to Verizon, my phone is bone stock. I'm thinking my handset has a bad card slot. Opinions?

Also had this problem have you tried formatting it via twrp and through settings (erase sd card) it works for me, for now
I would say it's probably a bad slot. I haven't had any issues with my XT1527 with a 32GB card. I've also had the card in and out and done various custom partitions like fat32+ext4 without any data loss or corruption.

Sadly I have the Verizon variant, I'm not eligible for the unlock program. My bootloader is locked down like a prison, so TWRP isn't an option.
I'm going with the bad slot diagnosis. My handset will have to serve as is until after the holidays, then I can justify replacing it.

have you tried formatting it through system setting? setting>storage>erase sd card, it works for my 32gb strontium, in my case i think it's faulty. Don't forget to back-up your files
I had a 32gb card that was used for ages and i think it got worn out and died.
over time it would disappear on me more and more when inserted in my Moto-E.
I had pulled it from a Galaxy S3 way back..
I used to have it scanned all the time with Kaspersky..
This caused it to get read in full every single time i put it into a PC.
I am suspicious that caused excessive wear and tear on it.
bought a new one but 16gb this time and it's working fine now.
main reason i got it was to put my MP3's on the card.
My old one kept having the music vanish and a prompt would come up asking to format it or it would simply vanish.. only for it to show back up and be fine later after restarting etc.
not sure if this is the same problem as you guys but i figured hey i might as well mention my story
i got tired of trying to reformat it via different methods or using different partition types and i simply gave up tinkering with it and bought a new one.
the new on has not given me a problem once.

Samsung Galaxy Stardust S766C - Root/OS Upgrade

Hello all, I'm making a thread hoping somebody with far more experience than I in this field can answer some questions that I have.
My current personal smartphone is a Samsung Galaxy Stardust "S766C". It's currently running Android 4.3 Jellybean, and is on the Tracfone network.
Recently, I've noticed a number of apps that I've wanted to install only support Android 4.4 or higher. (Yes, Pokemon GO is one of them). I've checked with my phone's software update, and it doesn't seem any updates are available for my OS, so it doesn't seem I'll be getting any further official updates for this device.
So what I was wondering, is if it's possible to root this phone and install a newer, more compatible OS, such as 5.0 or 6.0? I've also heard custom ROMs can also accomplish a similar feat. Basically, what would I need to do to get these apps installed and functioning normally, without bricking my phone or accidentally discontinuing service?
I've conducted a bit of research, but have been scarce in finding specific tutorials or solutions to my given scenario. I really do not want to upgrade my phone, I purchased it less than a year ago and the hardware is still more-than-enough to meet my needs.
Thanks.
Unfortunately it does not look like there are any options to update your phone, whether officially or unofficially. That's one of the downsides to having a less popular phone on a less popular network. Tracfone and Samsung couldn't care less to update a $100 phone as it's hard enough for them to keep up with the Galaxy S and Note lines while the developers that are into modding phones don't have the inclination or the source code from Samsung for devices like these to be able to make newer versions of Android run properly on older devices. As far as Pokemon Go, you might want to keep an eye on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/to-patch-pokemon-to-4-3-jelly-bean-beta-t3412608, though be warned that there are some unofficial versions floating around that might have some spyware included: https://blogs.mcafee.com/mcafee-labs/trojanized-pokemon-go-android-app-found-wild/.

I see, that's unfortunate, I was really hoping there would be at least some sort of option available to give this phone some extra life, but I guess I'll have to look into upgrading sooner than I originally thought.
I'll keep an eye on the Pokemon GO thread, but it doesn't seem like they're getting anywhere too quickly.

Not sure what kind of budget you're working with, but if you know someone with an Amazon Prime account, you can get the new Blu HD R1 for $60 with 2 GBs of RAM, 16 GB storage + SD card slot, quad core Mediatek processor, 5" 720P screen, 8 MP camera, and 6.0 Marshmallow. It's nothing special and the discount is because it has lockscreen ads, but it's an upgrade over your current phone in most every way, and is unlocked for any GSM network (Tracfone has GSM and CDMA options). You can remove ads by just replacing the lockscreen with a 3rd party app. Got one coming this week to give to my mom.

I do have Amazon Prime, but only the student version. I get free shipping, but I suppose this deal is not included. Total for that phone comes to $109, out of my budget range by about a mile.
I also couldn't find any confirmation that it worked with Tracfone, only Verizon, AT&T, and Net10. Theoretically, it'll just work if I purchase the $1 BYOP Tracfone kit?

There's 2 versions of the phone - regular and the one with ads that is $50 off. I'm not sure about whether that is an option for the student version of Prime or not.

But yea, works on Tmo or ATT and I think Tracfone can support either, if I remember right. ATT network for sure.

Yep, same link that I followed, I can purchase it even though it says "only for prime members", but for $109.
Lame. Have to befriend someone else with a regular Prime account.
