How do USB C Hub options work (OTG)? - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

I had a nexus 7 mounted in my car and it would mount devices and charge at the same time (rear view camera, sd card, dac sound card).
I have this hub:

Touchpad USB OTG Compatibility List

Thanks to a recent video by reverendkjr on Youtube, we now have a confirmed USB OTG method for CM9.

You can use whatever source of USB power you want including a wall charger, but I bought the 2AA battery powered supply above and can confirm it works.
Compatibility List:
-Multiple USB devices will work if you use a USB hub. A non-powered one works fine for me since you will already have a separate power source.
-USB keyboards and mice work fine including all basic functions like scroll wheel on the mouse, num and caps lock on the keyboard.
-FAT32 formatted flash drives will mount by default under "/mnt/usbdisk".

-If you want to mount NTFS drives or multiple flash drives, download Drive Mount. This software will mount drives under "/mnt/sda1", "/mnt/sdb1", etc. I can confirm it works for multiple drives and NTFS/FAT32. It was removed from Google Play so the apk has been posted. If anybody has had success with other NTFS mounting software please post your results.

-I tried a Rosewill USB SATA/IDE externally powered hard drive reader and was able to mount a 400GB SATA 3.5" HDD using Drive Mount. Just to see what would happen I tried a SATA DVD drive but Android doesn't recognize it and probably doesn't even support the CD/DVD file system.

-USB card readers will work, but I've had mixed results.
USB Device Info:
If you want to diagnose items and see some info about what the Touchpad is detecting, download USB Device Info free from Google Play. Everything shows up under the Linux tab. This shows some useful info about devices including current draw, device identification, etc. I tested it with a USB hub and a few flash drives and it successfully showed entries for the hub and the flash drives. It wont tell you if Android has drivers for the device, but merely IDs the device(s) confirming the connection if working.

A plugged in USB OTG adapter will show up as "Qualcomm On-Chip EHCI Host Controller" under the Linux tab regardless of whether or not power is present. This is a good way to see if you have a working OTG adapter.
Flash Drive Unmounting Issues:
Flash drives are called an SD Card when mounted. There is no option to unmount a flash drive unless you use Drive Mount, so if you notice SD card removal error messages they are referring to your flash drive and not the Touchpad's internal memory partition that is mounted as /sdcard.
When a flash drive is removed or powered off without being unmounted, its common to get a "android.process.media" force close, just tap OK.
Charging:
You will not be able to charge via micro USB while using OTG even if your power source has enough current. You can charge via the Touchstone just fine. Knowing this, you can set up a really nice docking station by using the Touchstone as a stand/charger and then using the microUSB slot for peripherals like a USB keyboard and mouse connected to a hub with spare ports for flash drives, etc.

Insufficient Available Bus Power Fix:
If you get this error, I haven't yet, some users have had success using this app posted on Rootzwiki.
I didn't feel like buying anything and already had some things laying around so I modified an Adafruit MintyBoost to accept a device via usb, add power, and continue on down the line...
Really all I did was solder a usb cable onto the female USB port on the MintyBoost, drill a hole on the other side of the tin and feed it out. The card reader conveniently fits inside of the mint tin so it's a pretty compact package.
The only down side I've noticed is that it also charges the TouchPad (the batteries will die quicker) and continues to send power to the card reader after the OTG cable has been unplugged from the TouchPad.
Excuse the crappy pic. I really don't feel like taking a better one.
I could never get the OTG cable to charge the Touchpad, I always thought when the Touchpad sensed OTG (grounding on pin 4) it refused to take power. You can disconnect the +5v Vcc to the Touchpad (red wire) on your OTG cable and OTG devices will still work.

I came to the same conclusion some days ago ,touch pad can't be charged using org cable,needs a regular micro USB cable and the barrel AC charger.I did many tests but having otg devices working and really charge at the same time its not possible,it seems like charging but its not.
Today I accidentally found this http://direct.sanwa.co.jp/ItemPage/400-GADR002W that by first look it could be awesome...

If its provides its own 5v power it would likely work, but I don't really see anywhere for an external power connection and it looks too small to house a battery.

For whatever reason, when I tried that the card reader wouldn't initialize. Once I connected the +5v from the OTG it'd light right up...
After it lit up I could disconnect the +5v and it'd stop the "charging" notification on the touchpad and keep working.

Then it should work fine as the Touchpad uses a standard OTG pinout, it just doesn't provide power so if it has a way to provide power to devices than I see no reason why it wouldn't work.
quick question that i didn't see answered above :S can i use the otg cable adapter without another power source (like can touchpad power it?)? Saw it asked above but didn't see anyone saying that the power source is required :S
kind of want to plug a usb flash drive into touchpad so I can type documents when I'm on the go and switch to computer. don't want to carry another power source either :S

No, the Touchpad doesn't provide any power for OTG devices which is why you need to supply it power. The cheap USB charger I linked to in the original post will work fine for a portable power supply if you don't want to build something yourself.
And it also appears you can't just plug the other USB into the wall?

Nice and cheap and the best part it works.
USB Hub works...sort of.
I tried this with a cheap USB hub I bought. I had bought it for my laptop and made sure it had it's own power supply to keep the load off my laptop, so I thought it would be perfect for this. Nice try though.
Turns out it needs 5V from the host to activate as well as the additional external power supply. Just fired it up with my TouchPad connected via a Y-Cable and my Laptop providing the 5V to fire it up. Works like a charm.
As yet to find out if it works with my travel charger providing the 5V and no external power supply plugged in, and how many devices I can hook up. It's got 7 ports so I suppose the supply might be useful then, but do I really need to hook up that many devices? Otherwise...pointless. Back to the drawing board I go.

This would be really handy and it's a much more elegant solution than a y cable and external power source.
Too bad it seems like we won't be able to get one easily.
Am i missing something here or can i use my 3.5" external HDD (with a power supply) to provide power to my External so i dont have to plug the cable into a USB hub?

[Tips and Tricks] OTG (USB Host Support) - Requires kernel support

Some kernels for the Evo 3D on XDA now have On-The-Go (OTG) USB host support built-in so it's very easy to support USB peripherals such as keyboards, mice, flash drives and portable hard drives from your phone regardless of the ROM installed. If you would like more information about OTG, here's a very good thread in the XDA Sensation forum that covers it pretty well.
The commands to mount and unmount USB storage devices manually are covered in that thread, but I've found the easiest way to mount and dismount my flash drive is to use an app called [root]StickMount from Chainfire, the developer of SuperSU. Depending on the ROM installed, it may not be considered compatible and won't show in the Play Store, so I've attached the .apk in case that happens.
I haven't used devices other than flash drives so far on my phone, but other users have indicated that keyboards, mice and other USB devices also work. If you are using OTG to attach any type of USB devices, please share your experiences and any tips you might have. Also, please use this thread for any questions you might have about OTG support and devices, even if you haven't gotten around to trying it yourself yet.

I want to thank Markmx6 for his guide on another site that was easy for me to follow to make my own OTG cable and Ramjet73 for digging up and posting his links here. Maybe Markmx6 will add his info over here now too since all this works with the Buttered Toast Kernel (bigwillyg).
I got to looking around and wondering with the parts I have if I am setup for OTG and just need to plug everything together without hacking up a power supply which I'd prefer not to do.
Here's what I have on hand:
I ohmed out the " CrazyOnDigital 2 port charger's" data pins:
Port1-pin3 & port2-pin3 = 0.1 ohms (and about 30k to gnd/shld)
Port1-pin2 & port2-pin2 = 0.1 ohms (and about 30k to gnd/shld)
(I also reversed the leads in case I was reading through a diode)
So it looks like the data pins on this aren't shorted together and that it will function as a Powered USB "y" cable/pass through between ports 1 & 2.
Part 2
I realize that my purchased USB OTG cable won't plug in between the charger & my phone so I may use a USB extension Cable and USB A to A adapter that I have (not pictured) or I may just hack a spare USB A to Micro USB (5pin) cable that I have into another OTG Cable.
Q: My understanding is that an OTG cable has the ID pin (pin 4 of the 5pin Micro) tied to Gnd, like Markmx6 did in his original cable; correct? So, that's why the micro USB end gets cut open a bit.

That micro male to mini female cable above has the 4th (5th?) wire, brown. This is the ID wire. Shorted to ground, it makes the cable a host cable.

The OTG cable has a micro-A plug on one side, and a micro-B plug on the other (it cannot have two plugs of the same type). OTG adds a fifth pin to the standard USB connector, called the ID-pin; the micro-A plug has the ID pin grounded, while the ID in the micro-B plug is floating. The device that has a micro-A plugged in becomes an OTG A-device, and the one that has micro-B plugged becomes a B-device. The type of the plug inserted is detected by the state of the pin ID .
Three additional ID pin states are defined[4] at the nominal resistance values of 124 kΩ, 68 kΩ, and 36.5 kΩ, with respect to the ground pin. These permit the device to work with a USB Accessory Charger Adapter which allows the OTG device to be attached to both a charger and another device simultaneously.[6]
These three states are used in the cases of:
- A charger and either no device or an A-device that is not asserting VBUS (not providing power) are attached. The OTG device is allowed to charge and initiate SRP but not connect.[6]

I went ahead and modified a spare USB A to Micro B cable for OTG without power. Plugged everything up with my Logitech Wireless USB mouse and it works! Cool as can be! See new pics. (Yellow wire is the Jumper).
Still have a few questions:
Q: Would the "purchased" OTG Cable already have pin 4 & 5 Shorted?
A: YES it should, but one of the cables I bought was defective.
Q: Does your OTG setup from the op charge the phone at the same time (and/or keep it charged)?
A: Yes

Mpgrimm2; I have a small update from some of my testing regarding the USB OTG 4 ID pin states (pin 4 to pin 5 "gnd" ).
Ininity (Open) = Standard USB data/charge
0 Ω (shorted) = USB OTG host
36.5K Ω = desktop cradle/dock

Here's what I've found out or verified:
- I'm still not sure about the 3 different USB OTG ID modes that were mentioned. In the test rig (pictured) for different values of resistance between pin 4 (ID) and pin 5 (gnd):
0 ohm (Short) = USB OTG host
36.5k ohm (47k in use) = Dock Mode
68K ohm (74k in use) = Dock Mode
124k Ohm (127k in use) = No discernible effect
I also determined that my first homemade USB OTG cable wouldn't allow the phone to charge because of a broken +5v wire during reassembly (new one works correctly, but so far I preferred the simplicity of the original setup & charger over the new cable I made, but time will tell.
Here's the Ebay link to the OTG cable RamJet73 recommended (same as the last one I made b/c I didn't want to wait) so that I can keep it linked in one place.
Here are the pictures of the 2nd cable that I made that is "very similar" to the one Ramjet73 mentioned at eBay but 2ft longer (See Schematic #4 in later post).
Keep in mind that the OTG function will be disabled if an OTG cable is plugged into a USB charger that has the data pins shorted internally (AC charging), but this doesn't appear to happen with a powered hub (isolated)

I started with components I imagine you will all have, since they came with the phone. The HTC charging cable and outlet adapter.
First, cut around the base of the outlet adapter. This is around 3/16" thick, and the cut is better off to be made on the "shiny" plastic than the "dull" portion. I used a Dremel, but any type of blade will do, it just may take more time.
Make a cut along the white line on the board (Shown in red here) Otherwise this will not work. On typical chargers they short out the Data+ and the Data- connections (mpg2 edit: it forces "AC Charging" mode). Not sure why... Digging a razor blade across this several times should do the trick, but if you want to make sure with a continuity tester that will always give piece of mind.
Now you need to cut your cable, I recommend leaving around 2" or more from the standard usb side. (A little of this wire will come in handy for later in this project)
Cut and then strip your wires, there will be a braided shielding wire just under the insulation. Then it will be helpful to "Tin" the ends of your wires.
The shielding can be completely removed, or you can ground it out, but I haven't found this to be needed.
You will now need to solder the wires to the circuit board. This will obviously need to be in the correct order.
From the top will be:
RED = 5V+
WHITE = Data +
GREEN = Data -
BLACK = 5V-
Now you can re-assemble the Outlet adapter if you choose.
Now you need to cut up the other (phone) end of your cable to enable the OTG function.

Ebay/Applecable Purchased OTG Cable & USB Hub
I just verified that if you get the Micro USB Host OTG Cable With USB power ($6 from AppleCable on Ebay) that Ramjet73 mentioned (or this one), it will work with any standard USB charger (ie the 1 Amp HTC or 2 Amp HP Touchpad Charger) because the USB Power Connector is Isolated. I also picked up Applecable's USB 2.0 3 Port Hub with data Sync Charger cable for $7
(I may try to modify it to be a USB OTG powered hub with this OTG Adapter and this USB to 3.5mm/1.3mm Adapter to power the hub directly from "ANY" USB charger.
EDIT: It works fine, but modified it anyway).

I just found out that the version of the OTG cable with the female microUSB connector doesn't charge the phone when power is applied to that connector. The eBay listing at your link above doesn't say one way or the other, but this link was posted on another site and that listing specifically says it doesn't. I'm not sure why that is, but it looks like the same brand (Chen Yang) in both listings.
The version with the male USB A connector for power can definitely charge the phone when in use. I've tested that myself.

Now that I've made a few on my own and bought the one you recommended, I can say it likely has to do with the way that it's wired up. I would bet that the Applecable one with the M & F microUSB allows charging.
Note: I also updated my previous post with a new USB to 3.5mm adapter for the hub. I ordered both adapters (so I don't have to cut/solder mods to the hub) and will report back once I get it. (also picked up a 2nd 3d for my son's b-day coming up so I don't waste an upgrade just yet).

I really want to connect my Razer Banshees to it, but all this running around to find a usb hub with internal battery is killing me, and having one that works on charger is ilogical, from my point of view. If i want to do this, I want it to be portable, otherwise I'd just connect it to my pc/laptop. I connected them to a Galaxy S3 and they worked instantly. I use Coolexe's ROM and Kernel (v4.0), and it says that it has usb support and usb headset support

Unlike Samsung, HTC hasn't officially supported OTG so we are lucky to have some ROM's and kernels that do support it. Even the utilities like stickmount don't download from the Play Store because the Evo 3D is not considered a compatible device.
USB mice and keyboards can work without external power, but many other devices need power and would drain the phone battery very quickly even if they could use it. I have no experience with USB headphones on a phone, but it would make more sense to me to have batteries in the headphones and not depend on the phone for power. Another possibilty may be to use an external battery like this one connected to an OTG adapter that includes a connector for external power, but I haven't test that.
I use rechargeable stereo bluetooth headphones so I don't have to mess with cables at all, but if you prefer the USB headphones the options may be more limited with the Evo 3D than the SGS3.

Between the items Ramjet73 and I have mentioned in previous posts (edited below), you should be able to piece together the functionality you are looking for, but still not ideal as far as portability. Markmx6 has mentioned making his own "D" battery powered usb hub (I think) that he may post here sometime. Hope this helps.

I built a 4 port charger using four "D" batteries for a trip I took to Disney world (five kids on a six hour flight.... required someway to recharge Nooks, cell phones, and etc)
To break it down simply I used a four battery holder. (Apparently I don't have enough posts to post links, pull up radioshacks website and search for "D" battery holder)
You don't need "D" batteries as these are bulky, I used them because size wasn't really a factor. "AA" or "AAA" batteries should be fine. Remember Alkaline batteries provide 1.5 volts each NiCad (Older rechargeable) 1.2 volts There are newer voltages to my knowledge...
I used four batteries because it produces 6 volts in series. MAY POSSIBLY DAMAGE YOUR PHONE
Ideally you would provide 5 volts which is what USB provides, I find 6 volts worked fine for me.
For my charger I shorted the DATA +/- terminals together to fool the phone into believing it was using AC power for a faster charge.
All you really need to do to continue to use the hub as a Data transfer device would be to solder the red and black wires to their respective terminals on the hub, it shouldn't matter which port you use as they should all be linked, other hubs may vary.
You may also be able to just wire a female USB port onto the battery holder and use a hub plugged into that...
My CrazyOnDigital 2 port charger doesn't have the data pins shorted (D+ and D-) like the stock HTC unit. This causes any "Android" phone to charge at the lower 500ma Max "Charging USB" rate vs "AC Charging" (explains my slow charging when travelling), but a bonus is that it allows me to pass data b/w the 2 ports like a simple hub.
- If the D+ and D- pins are shorted when an OTG USB cable is plugged in, the phone will go into "AC Charging" mode, but not allow OTG devices to work, but if the phone is still connected and the data pins opened back up, you retain "AC Charging" mode and have USB OTG functions.
(I'm thinking that a simple on/off switch installed across the data pins of my charger will give me a dual mode charger).

A5 ’17 USB OTG: a little research

One of the things I’m really amazed by with the modern PDAs is the USB OTG. So just as I found out that my Galaxy has it, I got myself an adapter (for less than $3) and tested it with several devices. Here’re my results:
USB flash drives: every single one I tried worked perfectly except a 1 GB drive of unknown vendor, which wasn't even recognized by the Galaxy, works okay with PCs thought.
External HDDs: the Toshiba 500 GB USB 3.0 drive wasn't recognized and didn't show any signs of life. Surprisingly, a 320 GB SATA WD Blue in a USB bay was detected and spinned up, but the Galaxy didn't recognize the file system and asked if I want to format it. I didn't, since the disk had some data I needed, but there's definitely a potential.
Input devices: all the mice and keyboards I tried worked as they should, both wired and wireless, which was expected. Which wasn't, is that DualShock3 controller from my PS3 was immediately recognized too without any additional drivers or software, it even let me control the menus. Sadly, that wasn't the case with my Logitech Freedom 2.4 wireless joystick. I guess the power wasn't enough.
Output​ devices: Sennheiser wired USB headset (basically, the USB sound adapter with the headset attached) worked as it should. HP LaserJet P1102 printer didn't work even with USB printing service installed.
Overally, I got much more then I dreamed of, especially since I heard that the OTG is very poor on a modern devices. DualShock3 success is especially cool.
This is quite weird as I have tried the original Samsung Micro USB OTG adapter, with the little white USB-C adapter and it did not work. This is on A3 2017.
There were rumors that USB OTG was disabled. Which adapter do you have?

The rumors aren't true. The thing is, Type-C uses a different pinout for OTG, so it shouldn't be a combo of Type-C to Micro and Micro to Type-A OTG, it should be a special Type-C to Type-A OTG adapter. The adapter that comes with the device is good for charging only, or so I heard. I’ll photo my adapter, but I got it for almost nothing in a local computers store.

Very interesting. A different pinout for OTG. Yeah I thought it was the combo that shoud have worked.
The little adapter comes with the device is said to be charge and sync. Because when connected to my PC it works. for data transfer.

I have an OTG now from Aliexpress. It works for my A3 2017. 90 degree angle connector.
Now onto an USB-C to HDMI. The official Samsung EE-HG950 does not work.

So if i understand correctly the little "micro usb connector" that comes with the A5 2017 won't work for anything other than charging? I tried using it with a regular otg cable and it doesn't detect any flash drive, not even a ps3 controller, i don't even get the notification that a usb is plugged in.
But whats weird is if i use a male to male usb cable and connect to to a pc it works just fine. Any idea whats causing this?
Please help. I have the same problem. I have newly bought a5 2017. I already have otg usb drive sandisk. The adapter type c included in the box didn't work fine. Except only for charging when connected to usb 2.0.
My usb otg drive will become useless if it doesn't read by my device. What should i do? Or how to activate maybe my otg support? Tnx in advance.

The adapter from the box is just for charging and data transfer to compuer. If you want to use your flasdisk you can buy a new usb otg for type c slot.

USB-C capabilities?? USBpens, HDD, HDMI etc??

Anyone who knows the capabilities of the USB-C port?? Is it possible to use USBpens, external harddrives, card-reader etc? And how about USB-C to HDMI, a seller in a store told me he did it with his m5... But I have my doubts to whether that was "salesmens talk"...
Don't have an M5 yet (tomorrow), but the Mate SE (micro usb) port can be used for many things people are not aware of. For many things all you need is an OTG cable (usb-c or micro to usb). I've plugged in usb thumb drives and even a wireless keyboard and mouse using a logitech unifying receiver (first set usb connection to midi).
A quick search turned this usb-c to hdmi adapter on amazon, looks like there are many different ones available. Have never tried this with any of my android devices, but if they make these adapters, well it certainly gives one hope that it *might* work, it certainly must in some circumstances.

I have a HDMI adapter I use for the Nintendo Switch (which also should work with Samsung devices) and that one doesn't work with my M5 8.4.
I also have a USB-C OTG adapter and a USB memory stick works, but I haven't yried anything else.
It doesn't appear that the M5 is capable of hdmi output. Mhl and slimport seem to be absent.
I used a USB c combo dongle , it had USB A female and sd card slot.
On holiday I used it to copy my gopro videos to ssd. It wasn't pushing usb 3 speeds and the system acts a little weird when it is plugged in - movies that are downloading on amazon or Google play would go to the ssd or sdcard plugged in from otg, even though I have an sdcard in the external asd slot

Weird, I've tried it with Hugo 2 / UAPP playing hi-res flac and it seems to work fine. I set it in bit perfect mode and the bit rate indicator LED showed the correct bitrate. I did have to try a couple of unplug/replug to get the tablet to do some permission requests. It also worked with Youtube and the default Android audio system - though I did have to stop UAPP kicking in.
USB C can power external hard drive, and ive got one of those USB to 2.5in adapters that powers a 1tb toshiba laptop drive and that's ok too, the tablet also give me the option to reverse charge, so i presume it is capable of high amp output on the port, maybe up to 1A or more

Yeah the USB port isn't working correctly. It's supposed to be USB 3.0, but i am copying at 18MB/s (onto an SD card capable of 100MB/s)

Seriously dissapointed, and I know it sounds silly but this device isn't useful without USB 3.0, I have an action camera and hence I copy video to internal SD card. What use is a device if you can't input/output to it fast enough.

Have same experience. Really regret buying high end Huawei M5 and then realised I could not use it with HDMI cable. Wireless projection is really lag!
For folks with slow USB data issues, it mat be that you need a powered hub for it to work optimally. I've had this issue with a few Android devices over the years.

Rather than "how much" the question should be "do you gain anything"?
So I have USB 3.0 dongles out the wazoo. An ethernet adaptor, a serial port adapter, an (unpowered) 3 port USB 3.0 hub + card reader, etc. And I have USB-C to USB 3.0 adapter.
Is there any reason to replace these gadgets? For instance, will a USB-C card reader transfer data faster than a USB 3.0 card reader plus an adapter cable? How about USB 3.0 thumb drives on the 3.0 hub?
I've found only one non-starter so far. I have a 100gb USB 3.0 power-over-USB hard drive that requires too much power. I didn't expect it to work because it draws too much power for my laptop unless the laptop is plugged into wall-power. My Insignia USB-C to hdmi/USB/usb-c power also doesn't support the hard drive. So I guess I need to look for another adapter! It _will_ work with a powered micro-USB to USB 2.0 dongle + micro-USB to USB-C adapter, but even I know that is a kluge beyond the pale.
I don't have a bluetooth keyboard, but both a USB keyboard and a Logitech keyboard with Universal RF / USB receiver work fine (although I can see the advantage to Bluetooth over both)
Besides HDMI, which seems to be touchy because of the power requirements (my Insignia adaptor seems to have "slow charging" issues), what kind of gadgets are you finding useful, and which ones do you need to update to USB-C?

At least from the card reader perspective, I have speed tested using the adapter and no difference. I also use an adapter for my smart card reader without issue...and cheap adapters at that.
I think you need an all in one adapters (like USB's, SD card reader, ethernet, HDMI and usb type-c for charging) and effective internal components for transfer speed and power delivery.
I have an adapter from Ugreen 7 in 1 adapter and works great but if you can't find it you can probably get the same things from different brands.
For a keyboard and mouse, going with the all Bluetooth or one universal dongle like Logitech make sense but don't forget that if just use the keyboard and mice with the all in one dongle drains your battery a lot but if you have just type-c to usb 3.0 adapter or type-c to otg (whatever you call it) it is much for useful and you don't toggle Bluetooth always. But for Bluetooth you don't need to carry the adapters.
For HDMI, i am using the all in one or HDMI and power delivery adapter (from Ugreen too) but it depends on what i need.
So you always need different adapters for what you do. But i don't know about pluging the hub to a hub, but it is not useful and not looking good so one adapter is more effective.
But there is a problem with these adapters, they need power and it is not fast charging the tablet(but not slowly charging too just normal) with the adapter that come with so i think you have to have a PD charge for tablet when using adapters because it doesn't support QC3.0 (i tested but not fast charging).
