Phone Unlocked, FRP Unlocked but still without OS, help please! - Honor 9 Questions & Answers

Hi guys, I have big problem. I have Honor 9-L09C432 (EU Version) and I wanted to flash Android 8.0. After succesful update, I found out I'm struck in the beta version (apps, functions, etc.) So I wanted to do rollback to EMUI 5.0/A 7.0. I followed some guides and I failed. Now I have phone without OS (unlocked) and I want to have original firmware with EMUI 5.1 (Android 7). I followed this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ho...p/honor-9-os-installed-twrp-fastboot-t3718501 but without any progress. TWRP doesn't let me go further and I am stuck because USB does not work in TWRP mode. It works in fastboot mode but I cannot see phone in hardware and can't transfer any files to phone. Any help?

I'll say:
First go back to a working emui8 system by flashing latest emui8 firmware same as your phone's region with HuRUpdater tool.

But I am without OS and Updater does not work

If you're with oreo partitions scheme, use HuRUpdater with oreo's twrp linked in HuRUpdater thread.
If you're with nougat partitions scheme, use a 'service repair' firmware you can flash the dload way with an external SDcart or USB-OTG exfat formated.

I wrote that my USB does not work thanks to TWRP Oreo version. I see my phone connected in ADB but in PC no. I have SDcard but I have not SDcard reader, so I wanted to try figure out my problem without buying SDcard reader as first

or try with a 50cents USB-OTG adapter.

I have USB-OTG Adapter, but when I tried to flash last firmware, I saw some errors and os does not launch. So I need links to function version for HuR updater tool

Use these firmwares links depending of your actual partition scheme (nougat or oreo) and where you wanna end:
-If already with oreo partition scheme, here is firmware oreo C432B363 FullOTA to use with HuRUpdater (I tested) :

I dont know what happend, give my brother use for awhile, suddenly he return to me with this problem.
its on nougat. sorry what build, i dont know.
Region China?. i dont know about the C00 or rebranded and c432 that you said. really have no idea.
OK.
So your Honor9 is STF-AL00 and was on nougat.
But:
-you don't know on which firmware region it was and you don't know if it was rebranded to STF-L09
-i guess your brother could also have updated it to oreo, or rebranded it before bricking it...
If you did not have any chinese app stock installed like QQ, Weibo or Tancent News then you could be probably on region C432 (or C10 or C185) ;
If so use this with an exfat external micro sdcard or usb-otg EXFAT formatted:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-9/development/firmware-huawei-honor-9-stf-l09-stock-t3696892
First try with C432B130, read the instructions inside, do it, then report.
thanks.. i will try it tonight,
i've done try update with sd card before, but not with those file inside the link you give.
and also not with EXFAT fromat sd card, but it said Software Update Failed.
i will try this and update here again..
thanks

OK so, the facts :
1) B362 firmware are mostly european (C432) or russian (C10) and could be japanese (C635).
So your phone was previously rebranded from chinese to one of these region.
It's not a problem if not done wrong, maybe your case...
2)'twrp 3.1.1.1 open kirin edition' is a custom recovery for NOUGAT and not for oreo.
And then some more questions:
-Can you boot your phone to normal mode ?
-You were on nougat before brick ?
-You were one oreo B362 before brick ?
-The brick happens after it upgraded from mogat to oreo B362 ? If so, how did you update ? normal OTA ? forced OTA with android app Firmware Finder ?
i can only boot the phone in recovery mode (twrp and erecovery) and fastboot
i installed b360 through forced ota and then when i was in the system i updated again to b362 throught settings\system update
i was on oreo b362 before brick, and i remember now that my navigations buttons were not working so i flashed a custom kernel to fix it, but
that prevented me from booting to the system again. (Proto Kernel)
edit: used that tool you gave me and i managed to flash STF-L09_C432B360.

So your phone was correctly rebranded in the past and we can deduce you are now on region C432 or C10.

You flashed a custom B360 kernel over your B362 : It was why your phone bootlooped just after !!
Flashing a stock B362 kernel would have solve the bootloop.

You said you had flashed boot, kernel and recovery from an update.app.... Which build number and region this update.app was from ?
You could flash back B362 stock boot, kernel and recovery and it should boot if you did not messed something else...
So, the best for you will be to:
1) use HuRUpdater to flash C432B360 or C10B360 firmware (depending of your actual phone region)
2)then flash the B360 kernel fix
3)then update via OTA or huRUpdater.

i flashed many update.app, i messed up with that, cant remember the last one.
just flashed twrp for oreo now, went to terminal and i can see "ro.hw.vendor: (hw)
does this tell me my phone region?
with this twrp for oreo i also get another error when flashing a rom zip "failed to mount "\system" (permission denied)
Stop messing with random dload folder and update.app ; From what i seen only special one called 'service repair' will work.
No. It does not.
Stop messing trying to flash random zip when on twrp ; From what i heard only special one called 'FullOTA-MF-PV' will work this way with twrp.
Be bold and try HuRUpdater witj C432B360 following my latter post.

C432 is maybe the wrong region if you don't get ota update notification to b362/b364 when checking for update in settings :
1) What's your build number version on Settings/System/about ?
2) What's the country shown when you dial**#*#2846579#*#**- on the dial pad, then go to 'Network Information Query' and then to 'Vendor Country Info' ?

reflashed b360 and now i get update to b364 on settings. still no capacity buttons..
So, you're fine on C432.
Just flash the B360 kernel fix while you're still on B360 https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=75772700 ;
This will fix your buttons.
You can then do a normal update via settings
ok so i tried to update using vol up + vol down + power button, again it said software install failed
inside those rar file got 2 file, 1 is UPDATE.APP which is 4gb++ and another one is update_STF-L09_hw_eu.app size around 1.4gb.
try update with 4gb file, appear 5% loading and then appear software install failed, same with 1.4gb file...
the only option i got is reboot system now when the error come out..
already did wipe cache & data before i do the update..
any idea? am i doing wrong step?
I have the same problem...When the installation begins, it stops at 5%
My phone is turned off. I tried to install recovery but got nothing
any idea please

Manual upgrading?

Hi all.
Honor 9 with unlocked bootloader and FRP. I'm on 8.0.0.366, rooted via Magisk's modded ramdisk and stock recovery.
AFAIK Otas should not work anymore.
According to Huawei Firmware Finder, OTA update to .368 is available and approved for my IMEI.
I tried to upgrade putting main update.app file (from the full-ota-mf) in SDCARD\dload and booting in software update mode. Process fails with software update error at 5%.
Same with 367.
Furthermore there are multiple update.app in the downloadable files, how to flash all updates?
Is there a way to manually upgrade the phone without factory resetting it?
I would avoid installing a custom recovery, maybe in beta.
I'm also comfortable with bare fastboot, could I flash all needed images just skipping data?
Thanks
I had the same problem with update.
I used this tutorial https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-9/how-to/how-to-root-honor-9-stf-l09c432b360a-t3778110 and flashed newest official ROM and Proto 8 kernel and it's awesome.
You can backup your data with hisuite and recover after fleshing. Worked for me very well.

Yep, I did the same. Got from b360 to b369 without factory reset. No issues.
1. TWRP 2. HuRUpdater with b369 from Firmware Finder 3. Magisk 4. Proto8 kernel+Split injector
All flashed from TWRP. TWRP flashed from fastboot. The same TWRP was renamed and put in the HuRUpdater folder.

SDCARD\dload won't work with update.app from Full-ota-mf ; maybe the full-ota-mf-pv but it's not sure. I believe it only work in firmware mode (dload) with 'service repair firmware'.

[How to] Decrypt data on P10 and other kirin devices (EMUI, OREO and PIE roms)

Well, first of all, this is not my work, I'm just sharing this guide that worked for me, it should work on any kirin device.
I have a P10 (VTR-L29C432), don't ask me if it works on X device, just try it for yourself as I did.
1) You need an unlocked bootloader and FRP
2) If you don't want to lose any data, backup your internal memory, because you'll need to do some wipes on stock recovery.
3) Reboot into TWRP and flash the "Huawei_remove_encyption_data_2.zip", here's the link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/guide-how-to-decrypt-data-mate-9-hi3660-t3834748, you can use blackball's TWRP (p10 plus) or twrp from Honor 9 lite forum (both works on any emui and pie's rom, but you'll need and sdcard in order to flash the file)
4) After that, reboot into bootloader and flash your stock recovery and wipe data and cache
5) Reboot again into bootloader and flash again your favorite Twrp.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/themes/theme-twrp-materialised-dark-light-play-t2915584 Themes for TWRP, download and flash as a normal zip.
If your device isn't hi3660 (kirin 960), you'll need to do it manually, first go to vendor/etc and look for a file called "fstab......" (you'll need to remember that name), go to the zip file that you previously downloaded and extract it, go to the folder vendor/etc and you'll see the fstab.hi3660 file, rename it with the name of your fstab and paste it into vendor/etc (if it ask for overwrite, hit the YES button), reboot and do the wipes on stock

i flash one from tutorial, twrp_recovery.img
in order to make any twrp working, first you need to reboot into fastboot and type fastboot -w, after that flash any twrp and follow the steps, I tried it with many recoveries, even with p10plus version.
Actually I'm using one from PRA forum, it works with custom roms
but internal memory is encrypted, but is not a problem for me.
i flash 3.1.1 twrp for oreo 8.0 based roms
this one see more partition to backup like others
@micky387 updated the files and the process, so I updated the thread all the credits to him

Do you know MP? Just asking because it's out of context. If you want to teach lessons, why do it on public instead of MP which is ethical.
And yes I'm doing the same mistake, but I hope to prevent many.

I experimented similarly on two P9 phones with Oreo, and was able to encrypt back by doing:
Install latest + Factory reset from eRecovery
Of course, before eRecovery, you must revert to stock Recovery (and stock eRecovery, Kernel if they were flashed over) and unroot (stock Ramdisk) - without you risk a brick
Edit: Also, while having decrypted Data and internal memory, successfully received an OTA patch (Huawei stopped updating but sent a smalll OTA patch to the existing firmware)

But as I said I don't want to encrypt back because if I had no need to permanently decrypt (for TWRP backup reasons, I have berkeley and encryption doesn't work there on TWRP) I wouldn't do it. Instead, I want to decrypt and then do a normal device encryption in AICP. Or am I getting it wrong and it's the same type of encryption in the end?

Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 (LDN-L21) - I want to FLASH my phone, but how? Problem

Hello,
I found that it is possibility to Install new system on a phone. I did research about this but I don't really know how I don't understand everything.
When I was searching for my phone model there were some inaccuracies.
For example: I couldn't find the proper version. I have found "firmwares" that differs by one letter and I don't know I can download it or better no :/
My Phone Specifications are:

I found a site where I can download Firmwares.
My question is: Can I download for example this version and install it?
LDN-L21 London-L21A 8.0.0.150(C432CUSTC432D1)
or I must find version that exactly match my phone specifications? And what the word "London" means here?
Could somebody tell me step by step what should I do to Install new system on my phone?
Hello.
There are 1 letter difference in model - L21A and L21B. I guess there are no really HW or SW differences, but I stayed at L21B stock rom.
London is commercial codename for that type/serie of phone. LDN-L01 to L29 are similar Huawei and Honor phones with various names (Y7 2018/ Nova 2 lite / Honor 7A/7C etc). Other line/serie has other city name.
Latest stock rom for LDN-L21B is 8.0.0.151, for now.
If your phone is not rooted, still bootloader locked, with stock recovery: use System update from Settings or boot to eRecovery, connect to WiFi and let phone download latest rom and install it automatically.

I guess that you can use some of recovery modes: stock recovery, TWRP recovery or fastboot flash. Inside every ZIP is UPDATE.app. Every *.app can be unpacked with Huawei_Update_Extractor_v0.9.9.5. Eccential partitions for flash are ramdisk, kernel, product, system, vendor, version, cust. Extracted IMGs are still packed as SPARE img, so you have to unpack them with SIMG2IMG (simg2img system.img sys.img).
Now images can be flashed with custom *TWRP* recovery or fastboot (fastboot flash system system.img).

HI thank you for your reply, can u give me ldn-l21b 8.0.0.151 because I have c432

Colt OS v5.4 (Android 10)

Hi all,
I have managed to install the following vanilla ROM on my Huawei P20 lite.
ColtOS-v5.4-10-Unofficial-20200103-arm64-ab-vanilla.img
So far it's going good but I've got 3 issues that I can't get info on with this ROM.
As far as I could see Android 10 OS has changed file systems. So my exFAT SD card won't work (needs to be formatted?). This card is only a couple of months old so it's not broken. It was working when I had EMUI 9.1 running yesterday. The OS says "there is an issue with your SD card". I go into the menu and it asks me to format said card. I have done this 4 times already but nothing changes. After the format the OS still gives the error that the SD card is faulty. Also when I connect my phone to my Win 10 PC only the Internal storage is picked up, not the SD card at all.
Then the other issue I have is getting TWRP to run. I have the following TWRP image that I tried to flash. When I do flash it and I reboot nothing happens and the phone boots to normal eRecovery.
TWRP image:
twrp-3.4.0-0-anne.img
Latly I have read read on the Colt OS XDA forum that one can not report errors of the OS if you are running Magisk. Is Magisk supported at all with this OS? Can I use SuperSU maybe instead of Magisk to get root working maybe?
For anyone who is going to respond, I say thank you

Hi Alf man!
Thank you for the suggested links. I tried flashing the TWRP provided but nothing happens.
I have gone back to EMUI 9.1 and I can pickup the sd card. So I have no idea why it keeps telling me the sd card is corrupt Alf.
From what I have read, there are 2 partitions, one active the other not, for easier upgrading etc. So it seems I have to specify which partition to flash the provided TWRP? Is there a post on xda that I am missing in trying to install TWRP on Android 10?

Well after flashing back to EMUI 9.1 I tried again, this time flashing TWRP first (twrp-3.4.0-0-anne.img) ....the other TWRP you suggested booted into TWRP but then it would reboot shortly after. Then I formated my sd card to fat32. After that I flashed Colt OS, then I reinstalled stock recovery, rebooted and ColtOS was working but it was installed on my SD card and not my main storage?
So now I am back on EMUI 9.1 but I can't access my storage on my PC. If I switch to "transfer file" only a cd-rom pops up in My Computer on Win 10. So I managed to screw up my entire storage :crying:
Well EMUI 9.1 is running though. My internal storage is encrypted

Hi, just a few notes:
- As I wrote earlier, availability of custom ROMs for Kirin devices is scarce.
- Note that the "AB" in GSIs is not the same thing as physically having AB partitions .
"AB" in GSIs means SAR - system-as-root ( P20 lite which runs on EMUI 9.1).
A common misconception is that having Project Treble support and A/B partition support are related to one another, but that’s not actually the case. Having one does not imply the other. P20 Lite supports Project Treble AB, yet is an A-only device ( does not support Seamless Updates).
- if your phone is running Oreo, install a-only version.

- I gave you in P.M. TWRP tips but you are still using 3.4.0-0 . Okay, it 's your choice.

fastboot erase userdata
fastboot flash system Colt-xxxx-xxxx.img

Ok thank you very much for your insight Alf.
I was having issues with that specific TWRP, that's why I tried a different one. But per your instructions, I will 100% go ahead and install Service ROM as suggested!
Thank you so very much Alf! Now I understand a bit more one the partitions.

Hi Alf,
So I tried to follow your advice. I downloaded the following .zip file mentioned in your earlier post.
ANE-L01 8.0.0.136(C432) Firmware Android 8.0.0 EMUI 8.0.0 05014YXX.zip
I unzipped that file, and afterwards I tried flashing it first with the dload method, which only gave an error exclamation on eRecovery. I know I need to downgrade first from 9.1.0 and I have looked through XDA posts now but I haven't managed to do it. I have also tried via HiSuite and it gives me the option to downgrade, which I did, and then the phone restarted into TWRP recovery ( it seems I did not flash stock recovery before the HiSuite downgrade).
Ok...it seems I have to relock my bootloader before I try and downgrade to EMUI 8. If there are any steps I am missing please help.
Thank you!

Where did you get this information ??? If you are running EMUI 9.1, you have to flash Service ROM for EMUI 9.1. Don't try downgrade to Oreo using Oreo Service ROM, it may brick your phone.
Download links (Service ROMs for C432 EMUI 9.1):
https://androidhost.ru/Xch
https://androidhost.ru/Xc1
https://androidhost.ru/Xar
It doesn't matter which one you choose.

Ok thank you Alf, I will try with the provided info. Thank you! I was reading through XDA but couldn't find a answer. After I tried to do a downgrade via HiSuite and it failed as well as the dlaod method, I tried again to do a downgrade via HiSuite and the info in the app stated that my phone should not be unlocked.
Thank you for the help Alf!
Ok, I tried flashing via dload method as well as the service menu Alf. Didn't work. So I flashed it manually via fastboot. It installed the service ROM as you suggested I do.
The one I flashed was
Huawei P20 Lite ANE-LX1 ANE-L21 hw eu HLRCF Anne-L21 9.1.0.278(C432E6R1P7T8) Firmware EMUI9.1.0 05014YWN.zip
Current build number 9.1.0.278(C432E6R1P7)
What is the next step Alf? What makes a service ROM special? I tried looking on interwebs but couldn't find any info.

Ok, got a post on XDA, you need Service ROM to go back to Android 8.
The dload method, does it matter what the sd card's name is in the OS? Must it be sd_card?
OK the dload method does not work. I see that once you properly load a Service ROM, your device locks automatically and then one can proceed to flashing back to Oreo. I take it when the Service ROM is loaded correctly and one boot into fastboot mode the device should say "Phone Locked" "FRP Unlock"?

Dude it's you choice. As I said, downgrade to lower EMUI version via dload method may brick your phone. it's possible (and safely!) via HiSuite (with locked bootloader) only, or using HuRupdater 0.4 & TWRP .
Our conversation is useless, it's time to end it. Good Luck!
