x compact durability testing video - Sony Xperia X Compact Guides, News, & Discussion

i really like the x compact but i like my xz1 compact more
therefore in the interests of pure curiousity i decided to subject my x compact to my own brand of durability testing, including bend test (since i couldn't find one already existing).
resulting in perhaps not an entirely serious video but it undeniably pushes the x compact to it's breaking point
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySrCxK1kCU8

I kept laughing every now and then while watching your video with some of your hand moves/expressions. I also didn't know that my X Compact is water proof and has such a decent build quality. Thanks for your time!

Xperia Z Ultra Unboxing, Video Samples & Review!

Hi Guys, new to XDA here. Would like to share my Xperia Z Ultra experience!
It's safe to say that the Z Ultra is one of the best Portable Mobile Entertainment Device I've ever used! Anything smaller would have made lying on the bed at night watching a movie, unenjoyable. And anything bigger would have reduced it's usage as a daily mobile phone device (which it's already at it's limit).
The Z Ultra's front and back sides are covered by shatter proof tempered glass, while the sides or mainframe is made out of tough polyamide glass. At first glance, the polyamide glass frame was even mistaken as metal by me as it felt very sturdy and solid on the hands. All this material combined and I felt like I was holding a really unique premium piece of equipment.
Here's my Unboxing Video of the Demo Unit, including a basic test drive!
Unboxing + Basic Test Drive
The Z Ultra is as snappy as a mainstream laptop today. Surfing the web and watching videos in YouTube is a breeze with no lag spikes at all. SONY has made the right decision in inserting Qualcomn's best available processor (Snapdragon 800 Quad Core 2.2GHz) into this beauty, making it a beast at the same time!
With the Z Ultra's Snapdragon 800 processor and the Adreno 330 graphics processing unit, Android 4.2.2 runs flawlessly while 3D Mark has met it's match, maxing out it's 1st and 2nd Benchmark Tests while attaining a score of 16.3k on it's ultimate test.
It's a good thing to see SONY implementing it's Bravia SmartTV's screen expertise into the Xperia Z ULTRA. The Triluminous Display works wonders, delivering really strong rich colors which beats my desktop's monitor. I sure hope SONY decides to produce their own line of Desktop Monitors in the future as I would definitely ditch my current one anyday for it.
Since the SONY ERICSSON days, I have cherished every moment with my W995 Walkman Non-Smartphone for it's irreplacable sound quality. When it comes to Sound Quality, SONY truly delivers what my ears desire. The Clear Bass technology works like a charm! Increasing low frequency without sacrificing the mids and highs, the result, a clean distortion free music experience with extremely strong bass. Audiophiles who are bass heads should definitely get your hands on a Sony WALKMAN certified device (if not this one) and max out Clear Bass, try it out for yourselves!
Battery-Wise, this beast is packed with a 3000mAh battery which is able to provide sufficient juice for at least 2 days on basic usage (In Stamina Mode) Watching a 1920x1080 Full HD 1 hour clip drained 10% out of the battery. I'd say the battery life on the Z Ultra is great, no complaints here.
The 8 Megapixel rear camera on this beauty isn't one to be replaced by DSLRs but is indeed a decent enough camera for casual shootouts. Here are some video samples I took at Gardens By The Bay's Cloud Forest.
Video Sample 1 (At Cloud Forest)
Video Sample 2 (At Cloud Forest)
As for it's waterproof feature, it's a sweet one but one that I will not want to risk. However, I definitely felt much secure holding the Z Ultra in the rain compared to my old W995 phone.
So I've listed the stuffs that were to my favour, this half beauty half beast has slight flaws to it though.
The Z ULTRA is far too big to be used as a phone. I've went around asking friends and relatives and most of them stated that although the bigger screen is pleasing, it's massive size was far too big for day to day usage (especially when tight fitted jeans equipped with tiny pockets are in the trend now). Getting the SBH 52 Bluetooth headset is decent enough workaround for those who really want the bigger screen over anything else.
While the Z Ultra produces superb sound quality through the 3.5mm jack, the built-in speakers are pretty much comparable with most other phones out there. Sound is flat, with little to no bass. It has a decent enough maximum sound ouput but that's as far as it goes. It will be great if SONY could add in dual front facing speakers as seen in the HTC One and perhaps a subwoofer in it's future devices? This would complete the term "Ultimate Mobile Entertainment Experience".
With the introduction of IPS Panels, SONY should definitely consider replacing their TFT panels with IPS ones to deliver better viewing angles and color accuracy, but still the 6.44" Triluminous Display on this beauty is not one to dissapoint.
Finally, here's my review (8 days after I received the unit)
Final Review
Is it worth the penny!? If you ask me, it's definitely a yes! Especially if you're one who would go for bigger screens at the cost of slight portability issues, go for it! Not only is the Xperia Z Ultra a beast packing high end technology with a beefy 3000 mAh battery, it's slim and in fact the slimmest phablet device yet. Else, there's always the Xperia Z1! But I'll save that review for later since I wouldn't want to get off topic.
In short, the Xperia Z Ultra is A Hybrid of a Beast & Beauty!

[Q] Z5C issues solved by rooting & modding

First some background:
I've been doing a lot of reading on the Z5C since I'm torn between buying the Z5C or the X Compact. Here in Sweden the phones basically cost the same (the XC is 30 dollars more expensive) so the price is not the issue, but I'm still leaning towards the Z5C since it's waterproof, has the 4k and has mods.
To my question:
The downsides of the Z5c that I read about are that 1) battery isn't great 2) it gets hot 3) photos can be blurred on the edges -> can these issues be eliminated/minimized by rooting and using current camera mods?

Thanks! Options like what? After battery and camera, size is the most important thing.
I had a z3c (loved it), it broke and I bought a Oneplus X which is 5" and it's already too big.. I can't really find any worthy alternative when looking at below 5" phones

According to me 4.6 inch is the best screen size. It is the one of the main reason i opt to this cell.
Xperia X Compact has laser autofocus and new RGB-IR sensor whicn is quite awesome.. but the ugly thing is that it does not have 4K recording and water resistance. So if 4K and Water-resistantance is not your concern. For that price i recommend you to pick X Compact.

I forgot, root with DRM patch/workaround is almost the most important thing of all.. might be months before we get that on the X.

ok, but what about the issues I wrote about above?
No, these problems cannot be solved with mods.
1) it gets hot rarely in normal use, but if you use heavy games it could become REALLY hot. It's Snapdragon 810 no way around it. Either you decrease CPU power (as the thermal engine does) or you keep it hot in these occasions.
2) As you know, water resistance isn't really there until you test it in realworld conditions. There's at least one story (and many in the Z3 line) about water damaged Z5 line phones. So I would not consider it a great advantage of the Z5 line over the X line, but it's just my opinion.
3) Battery (particularly, idle battery drain) got a big improvement with MM 6.0.1. You can probably reach 1,5 days with normal use.
4) margin blur is there on my device, but it is not serious and i can see it only if i focus on that. Other users had serious blur issues. I don't know any kind of mod that can solve this problem, as it seems hw related. I might be wrong, though.
4) for that price i would buy Xperia X compact, especially for the +1 GB of RAM
If you mind root and warranty, however, i must remember to you that root exploit for TA partition backup was gained after 7 months, by a developer from the Z3 scene that was kind enough to work on it after receiving the exploit skeleton from another member of xda. I have no idea about the Xperia X scene here on xda, but you have a little chance of not seeing a working root exploit ever or for many months if no developer with hacking skills appears on the scene. I'm speaking about this considering the X line like the previous Z5 line, in terms of bootloader, TA partition and Sony warranty management.

My little experience with my new XA ULTRA vs sony x, z5 and z ultra

First at all, sorry for my english, i am spanish
I come from a sony xperia x, z ultra and z5, which has left me very good taste, a cell phone 5 inch good camera and good performance and screen, which I had is with the snapdragon xperia x 650.
Screen looking for something more than a phablet, especially good camera and good performance ...
3 days ago I bought my new Sony Xperia Ultra XA, user I was 2 years ago great xperia z ultra, and if I think I've won in all but water resistance and gpu.
First, the quality panel xa xperia ultra is excellent and with a lot of very good brightness, whites are pure white, blacks are good, that if, without being an AMOLED, has no side frames, is a big plus Please screen, for me, despite not having the Triluminous display technology is better than the ultra z.
As for cameras more of the same, both the front and rear they humiliate xperia z ultra, who only has 8 mpx without flash ... makes decent photos only during the day, with the ultra xa, thanks to flash and the optical stabilizer front camera, you make good pictures generally ....
As for the graphics and processor if, in graphic is below the mali T860 mp2 the Adreno 330, but has not given me any problems or hitches with any game, in terms of cpu, despite being eight cortex to 53, the develops mobile phenomenal, mediatek long ago makes and assembles good processors ...
As for audio, the other better, the speaker is more potent than xperia z ultra, with more and more serious force, like listening to music on the loudspeaker at half volume spare me ...
Then a paste, the ultra xa is not waterproof, but I do not usually wash in the shower with mobile ...
RAM up to 3GB of 2, the quality of materials in the ultra xa is very good, polycarbonate and metal, gives a sense of quality, also we won rapidad load thanks to the battery Qnovo ...
These days doing me about 5 hours and 25 minutes of screen is not my max in that sense, but do not see anything wrong.
In short, after coming xperia x, z ultra and Z5, for me is not a downgrade at all, I'd say this to the level of these, helium p10 processor is a high midrange performs very well, and not everything is processor, also this hand sony quality and optimization, and it shows.
a greeting and I hope you have served my great paragraph:good:
Agreed, the screen is the big winner on this unit, just wonderful.
The screen is indeed wonderful on this device. One of the best LCD I have layed my eyes on. It's just so uniform (my display is at least) and it has great black level and also good contrast as a result. I enjoy the screen too much to sell this phone even though it's not my main phone right now. Love the camera too it takes very fine images for the most part. This phone is excellent if you take it for what it is.

Xperia XZ2 Compact is announced, will you buy it?

Today Sony announced Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 compact at the MWC 2018 so I wanted to have a look at X compact users' opinions (like myself) and see if we are deciding to let XC go or not yet...
So here's my opinion :
In the beginning when I the leaked photos I didnt like the thickness of the XZ2c but now that I have seen the Hands-on videos Im becomin more intrested in buying it (Video here)
And my other reason is that the screen is now HDR 1080p and 5" so it means more colors and more usabality!
There's also a better camera and better front facin speakers.
Btw,
Dynamic vibrations are not available in Xz2 compact
And although it has dual front cameras, its only 5 mp!!!!
So if I buy it, it would be because of the new looks amd much much better gpu performance and of course HDR screen, otherwise, XC is doin a great job for me specially now that it has android Oreo...
Feel free to share your thoughts!
bye bye Sony
Very disappointed with Sony :crying:
Xz2 compact is not compact anymore. Thick (12mm), tall (135mm), no headphone jack, fingerprint reader on the back. What the f*ck is Sony doing?
The only fast compact device on the market is no more. Well, back to Samsung
NO, I'm really sad about this, but at least we have the XZ1 Compact to upgrade to, which seems like the best Compact they've ever made, basically updating SOC and better, matte, metal back/sides compared to the slippery, glossy sides we have on the X Compact...the lack of headphone jack and side fingerprint scanner on the XZ2's are really unfortunate changes imo

5" screen is not compact. I was already pushing my limits when I started with Z1c, (127mm tall), 4 years ago. I only upgraded to Z3c and Xc because they haven't gotten any bigger. I won't do 135mm..
No.
No. No real innovations, but it's gotten bigger and lost features like head phone jack and fingerprint on the side. The camera has to be on par with Samsung and iPhone to even consider the XZ2.
Maybe XZ3 Compact they ll back to the road, is there any real one-handed phone that we can expect this year?

Yeah, for me after a lot of reading i just think xz1 is not worth the cost, xz2 compact is like a new model phone. I am just going to wait for xz3 or any other compact version.
My next phone will probably not be from Sony. If I convert to a "normal" size it doesn't have to be Sony anymore.

Is the Xperia 1 worth the upgrade?

I'm the type of guy that can't stay with a phone for longer than 6-8 months and I'm already wanting a new phone. I'm currently on the OnePlus 7 Pro, and while it's a great phone, I still find myself wanting the Xperia for its build quality, looks, etc. I should also mention that I had a C6906 Xperia Z1 that I adored, but lack of Android updates and battery issues steered me away from Sony after a short stint with the Z3 (the emeral green finish was beautiful).
So to those that own the Xperia 1 - how do you feel after owning it for a little while? Did anyone come from the OnePlus 7 Pro? Part of my fear is the fact that I may miss the 90hz refresh rate, and as a result I'm considering a big and bulky gaming phone like the ASUS RoG Phone 2 as a potential new phone.
How has Sony been with Android updates lately? If I buy this phone, I'll likely keep it at least until the next version of Android hits. I know I won't get lightning fast updates like I do with OnePlus, but have they gotten better lately?
A lot of reviewers have voiced their opinion on the phone but if anything, the tall screen speaks in volumes to me because I'm constantly using my phone to either browse Instagram, reddit, Google, business emails, and other forms of use that benefit the tall screen. But is this one aspect of the phone worth the upgrade?
I'd love to hear from owners how they actually feel. I know it's difficult being unbiased, but I'm strongly considering buying this phone and would love to hear some opinions.
Cheers!

Sony is always the first to update new versiĆ³n and sell 1 phone no pixel con new version android in october
The 4k oled 21: 9 screen is addictive since I don't want 16: 9 screens to go 18: 9.
The flying phone has android stock with addictive features.
The battery is neither bad nor excellent I always arrive at bedtime with a battery

I really like this phone...eventhough not perfect.
Itd easy to handle with one hand in portrait
Camera its not perfect but among the best.

its depend, but one thing for sure when you pick sony xperia 1 ,you will get overall new experience on watching movies.
I was in the same position as you @AhsanU. I had the OnePlus 7 pro 256/12gb combo nebula blue and I traded it 2 days ago for a piano black Xperia 1. From my early experience I can tell you a few things.
I love the form factor, the Op7p feels a lot bigger even tho the Xperia is slightly taller. The Xperia screen defaults to 1080p but it isn't a big problem because it's super sharp and watching 4k content is insane. I hated the curved edges of the Op7p. You won't even notice the 90hz display difference.
Battery life is about equal with both device even tho the Xperia has a smaller battery, Sony optimization and the default 1080p screen mode helps there. I do however miss warp charge but the Xperia has power delivery, I have to buy a new car charger and additional USB type c cable.
Speakers are on par, the haptic feedback on Sony is way better, I can't stress this enough. Many times I'd miss notification while my phone was on vibrate on the Op7p.
Camera so far are very comparable with the X1 slightly taking the advantage, both camera suffers when the subject is moving, I have a 2 year old who can't sit still and it's a pain to capture him with both cameras compared to the super fast s10+ and iPhone xs max.
That's all I can think of for now.
Coming from a Note 9 & Galaxy S10+, here's my opinion:
The Sony fits what you need it to fit, what I mean by that is, devices can be tailored more for you than others by having different features etc.
The Note 9 & S10+ where both great, however they where great at being all round good, I felt they didn't stand out in a lot of aspects, which is where the Sony gets the advantage.. the software on Sony is leaps ahead of Samsung, don't get me wrong, OneUI is so much better than the older software and feels smoother, however Sony's feels much more refined and flows better in my opinion.
I know how the 3300mAh battery looks on paper but in my experience it's held up well and something you should be too concerned about, is it the best? No, does it need to be?, Not really, of course it would benefit from a larger cell but is 3300mAh enough to make me not want the phone? Hell no!
Then of course we have the screen & haptic feedback, this is where I feel like you need a Sony, the amount of reviews I saw that said both where gimmicky makes no sense to me, if the sharpness & clarity of 4K is a "gimmick" then surely the 90hz trend for fluidity is too?.. Anyway my point is the 4K screen is beautiful, best of the best in my opinion, same with the haptic feedback, was palmed off as gimmicky but it's something so many users overlook, having a powerful vibration for media, games & most importantly notifications is something lacking in so many other phones..
To conclude, I'm happy with my Xperia 1, and don't regret getting one
Yes. No paragraphs required.
Delighted with mine, especially interested to read that you liked the XZ1, that was one of my favourite ever phones in terms of form factor and build and in my opinion, the Xperia 1 is the spiritual successor to the XZ1. Basically, if you liked the XZ1 you should love the Xperia 1 as it adds a better screen, far more speed, better battery life, superior camera ability and various other things.
I've never used the OnePlus 7 as I had a 6T and wasn't especially impressed by it, in addition I'm not a fan of curving screens....can't see what benefit they add.
Looks great in white as well!
Yeah I would say so. Depends of course which device you have to begin with. As far as I'm concerned, the Xperia Z2 is Sony's best smartphone ever, and design-wise, the Xperia 1 is a downgrade from the Xperia Z2, although to be fair to the Xperia 1, it looks better than the entire Xperia X series, and is somewhat of a return to form for Sony, starting to resemble the classical OmniBalance design of the early Xperia Z series, and Sony made that clear by using glas for its back (and finally getting the NFC chip located on the back side again) and also releasing the Xperia 1 in the Xperia Z colors, black, white and purple (a long time ago we saw a purple Xperia flagship!). The Xperia 1 still has some of that soap bar design Sony introduced in the XZ2 though, but it's kept at a minimum here, thank God. And while I do prefer the stylish edges of the Z/Z1/Z2, I think the aluminium frame of the 1 looks quite okay. And the classical round power button of the Xperia Z should have been brought back too; the current generic pill designed power button, only works for camera and volume; Sony's power button was unique and really cool looking, and also much easier to press too.
But other than that, the Xperia 1 is an improvement in most ways over the early Xperia Z series (I'm no fan of the Z3, Z3+ and Z5; the Xperia Z series began going downhill with these devices, and that downhill continued with the Xperia X series), although there are some other drawbacks compared to the Z2, but that's mostly due to the downgrade known as Android 9 Pie, and not with the actual hardware. The 21:9 screen may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's an acquired taste, and personally I really like it at this point. The lack of wireless charging doesn't bother me as I'd never use it anyway, although perhaps it should have been added for keeping the USB port in a more mint condition. And I imagine wireless charging doesn't work that well with Sony's excellent battery care, which learns how long you charge the device, and adapts after that. Of course the battery could have been more powerful, like at the very least, 4,000 mAh, but you can get a lot of extra juice out of the 3,330 mAh battery by using black wallpaper, dark theme and so on in everything.
Personally, I think Sony's change in direction to OLED, is a mixed bag. Yeah, OLED looks great, and is very useful for saving battery life if you use completely black wallpaper and dark theme and so on, but the problem with OLED is that it wears out much faster than LCD, and it's also more sensitive to burn-ins and so on, so for that reason, I wish Sony would have kept using LCD screens. I mean after 6 years, my Xperia Z still has the exact same screen quality as it did when it was brand new; I know that won't be the case with my Xperia 1 when it turns 6.
The two main issues with the Xperia 1 right now, is that Sony has yet to add it on their Open Devices list, and that Sony still hasn't updated Xperia Transfer Mobile to work with the Xperia 1 and the Xperia 10 (I imagine this is an Android Pie issue more than anything). These two issues I'm sure will be resolved in the coming months, but it bothers me that it wasn't done at launch.
Perhaps the best thing about the Xperia 1, is that it has no ugly notches. While Sony has complied with the popularity of what I call, bezels autism, which has given us these ugly and disturbing notched smartphones, fortunately Sony didn't go all the way with the bezels autism trend, and so the Xperia 1 has a full screen, as it's supposed to be.
Not really an upgrade.
It's going to come down to 90hz screen or 21:9, that's basically it.
Rest is about the same
It's not worth the upgrade considering sony abandoned it when it comes to fixing the issues and providing updates other than copy paste of Google's security patches.

Well obviously Sony will abandon it if everyone's going to have your attitude and not buy non-Apple and non-Samsung devices. It might even get so bad that all we will get is Apple and Sapple. And that's the main reason I buy a non-mainstream smartphone brand like the Xperia, because I want market competition and also, Sony is a world class brand, Sony understands quality and design, and their Open Devices program alone is a good reason to buy the Xperia 1. We want open source and freedom in our smartphones.

i notice the improvement even not major.
so your posting not entirely valid.
you must look even samsung is rare to provide the update except their the latest device and in term of speed update they are slower, too slow
