wheres our april security patch its getting real stupid now - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

99 percent unlocked got it and even 2 yr old devices got it, s9 getting may, does anyone in the USA care at all

nope

Nope. I'm in the US, April security patch is available for me but I'm still on Feb patch. What's the big deal, it's just a security patch, doesn't change the way the phone works. Chances of you getting successfully hacked because of a security patch you don't have is pretty damn slim. And if you read all those recent articles about security patches issues, who knows if the security patch even has what's supposed to be in them.

yep, anyone who knows anything about these phones knows that a big deal is made about nothing when it comes to having the "latest" security patch..
I happen to be on the March security patch with T Mobile, but I had no idea which one I was on until I saw this thread and decided to look..

Knox? What's that? I don't need no stinking Knox.
Sure "improvements" (debatable) may get realeased with firmware updates but they have nothing do with security updates. That's the difference between U & S firmware updates.

Think your missing the point, the security updates are rolled into a firmware update. A firmware update "usually" contains software improvements and/or updated hardware drivers which have NOTHING to do with the aforementioned security updates.
Lastly, any info you want in regards to security updates on Samsung's android smartphones can be found here.

The posts quoted above yours, sums it up. And by the reading, which you should probably do some more of...these Members are not "bullying" you, and I don't see any where that you are being called a child or woman. Maybe acting like a bit of a "snowflake" but not a child or woman.
And it this thread continues or if you continual in the manner you are, it will be closed and you can find your "April security patches" else where.

And being a Veteran has nothing to with anything here, as so am I.
So how about getting back to a understandable discussion why you don't have your updated security patches.
And let's not compare boot sizes.

What would you ask Samsung? (Because I may ask them)

Okay, so someone from Samsung is going to be callig me soon. I assume it's related to #NeverAgain.
What would you guys want to know, or tell, samsung?
If I agree (maybe even if I do not) I will ask them.
EDIT - UPDATE:
Okay, I have finished the call. I hit on every topic from this thread/my twitter. I am very limited with what I can say RIGHT NOW though. I do feel that (& hopefully) shortly a lot of good will come from all of this.
I am NOT willing to throw my hands in the air and yell "hooray," but the Olive Branch is absolutely extended and this has the potential to be a huge win for the community, and Samsung.
I do feel this is less a PR move and more that our collective voice was heard. I really hope that is the case anyway. Still a little ways to go.... but I have to applaud them for their efforts so far, even though everything else they've done to this point has been a let down in my eyes.
I hate I solicited your Q's, and am unable to give answers... just wanted to let you guys know what I could say, and that I left the call a bit optimistic, hope that helps some.
Why the lack of support for us vibrant owners? What did we do besides buy millions of your phones?
You will need to be as clear as possible... hard to yell lack of support when froyo and source are available now. Granted it was slow and done terribly.. both the misleading deadlines AND the lack of an OTA.
Gingerbread or at least 2.2.1

Ok. Why the delay on froyo? Also why not an OTA update? Just seemed like the threw us a bone to shut us up with the kies update?
Tell them we need an easy way to get our problems through.. Some type out forum or a public way to brainstorm ideas.. Maybe you can get a job out of this..
Rfs has to go.. It cripples the device.. Ext4 has been proven a better file system.. An aosp build that we choose to flash if wanted.. Maybe through kies.. A metal back we can buy to give our phones that weight we always wanted..
Awesome, plese keep the good ideas going...
How about a definitive answer on the choice of rfs over ext4?
I know we have ext4 on our own, but im just curious as to why they made the decision in the first place.
Anything else? Call is happening shortly.
why don't we have the drivers source? Also will we be getting gingerbread?

I think that's the question most people are gonna want an answer to. Something tells me they aren't going to be able to tell you much, but Ill hold out hope.
We at XDA are a completely different type of customer. We like good specs, but we also like to be able to tinker with our phones. Currently, HTC is the most XDA friendly. If Samsung gave us the tools we needed, wed have no reason to switch up phones. We already have some of the best hardware, we just want great software to go with it.
Ask them if they are in a service business and not just a hardware business any more. As soon as they started provided hardware that needs updates, they need to provide those updates to keep their customers happy.
Also ask them if they are planning on inviting the XDA developers to their development tree so that we don't have to get leaked source code but can get it straight from Samsung. Maybe if we sign a waver that we take responsibility for our own actions. To be adults.
Also ask if they are going to allow critical feedback on their website of their devices and not censor them to only accept good feedback?
please tell these Nazis to make an option for the incoming call volume delay. it drives me nuts

I understand that you can't reveal anything, but Id say if the guy that spearheaded the NeverAgain campaign is satisfied with the conversation, things should be much brighter in the future.
I see that SGS variants are the first Android devices that brought Samsung a major success in smartphone battles, and obviously they were not ready to deal with all sorts of demands. I am happy to see them reaching out to their customers and to see a work in progress.

Because four different people (five if you include myself) asked for the source code at various points over the last week and have had no response nor source code, despite the author responding in the thread to other questions.
Or, read the mod edit in the first post that explains the thread is closed pending investigation. Add that to my post on the last page of the thread and it doesn't take a genius to put two and two together and come up with four. In fact, anyone barely capable of sitting next to a box of matches without managing to spontaneously combust should be able to figure those cryptic clues out.

Er, that kernel is badly broken if you can't use 500 or less with screen off. My phone sits nicely at 200-500 screen off using conservative.
What you're running with there is a kernel that's obviously incapable of running your phone at stock speeds. There is no need for your "EUREKA!" moment. It isn't a eureka moment. It's a "oh no, this kernel is ****" moment. You wouldn't accept a car that wouldn't idle below 5000rpm without exploding in a big heap, so why are you recommending to people "Run your phone higher than 500MHz in sleep hurr hurr" instead of "OMG guys this is terrible, use something, ANYTHING else, immediately!"
Occams Razor, obviously the simplest solution is often the best. Unless you're too simple to figure out that a phone should be able to run at all of its stock frequencies.
Just another jerk that thinks he's above the GPL. Perm ban imho. Nice post Hacre, I'm happy to provide matches for people to play with on the proviso they burn their XDA forum clicking hand.

@Hacre, @asgard: If the GPL has been violated then clearly this needs to be remedied and indeed this is a reasonable reason to close the thread whilst there is an investigation - all good stuff.
But, you do rather come across like vigilanties with pitch-forks going out to kill an old lady with warts! (To paraphrase Blackadder.) The fact is that he's (assuming he) has produced a kernel that is both fast and has excellent battery life. Yes, it may also have a key logger embedded or other nasties - we don't know, but that's the point of an investigation, right? So, may I propose applying the "innocent until proven guilty" principle here instead of the "feed him to the sharks!" and in the meantime simply stating the facts as known which is that he is suspected of being in violation of the GPL and therefore his post has been suspended pending further investigation?

Given how much **** I went through to even get XDA to acknowledge the GPL much less enforce that it's adhered to, no, I don't think it's being unreasonable at all.
Unreasonable would be to demand that the thread be closed/deleted and the thread starter be banned the moment it's noticed they've posted a kernel without source code. Did anybody do this? No. The author was asked several times by different people over at least a timespan of a week for the sources to be posted (mine are up to date on the github link in my signature before the kernel is even posted here) and those requests went ignored, while the author continued to post in the thread.
The fact that the thread is -still- closed indicates he -still- hasn't produced the source code, as that is all that is required for the mods to reopen the thread.
So given all the facts you have available do you still think that myself and others have been unreasonable? Really?
Everyone else plays by the rules, so should he. The fact that you're trying to white knight for someone who obviously didn't give a **** about the GPL or the spirit of it, is beggar's belief.
Oh and incidentally, if I'm coming across as a vigilante, good. As an FSF member and a kernel developer I've every right to get pissed when people **** on the GPL. If you think this is unreasonable then you'd be amazed what legal rights the copyright holders of the kernel have should the GPL be breached, up to and including making sure the author can never distribute anything to do with the Linux kernel again. He got off lightly.

Sure. I agree it's not good. But assuming guilt is worse IMHO.
It looks like the kernel is still safe to use as the mod did not block off the download links. From what I can gather, the dev either doesn't know how to release source on github or chooses not to release them. The work was also based off hardcore's speedmod kernel.
[REF] Galaxy S II Kernel source code repository. Please use it instead of .tar
A few kernel developers were given warnings for not releasing the source code via git. Some remedied it faster than others, some ignores the warning till their thread is locked then quits xda-developers forums.
Hacre, I understand you are proud of what you do with your kernel, however, your attitude needs improving. You openly pick on another dev, when his thread is locked, it's like kicking someone in the balls after he is already down from someone else's punch, and being proud of it. I don't care how good your kernel is, or how great a person you are, you really need to grow up.

What? This isn't a trial with a jury. The thread has been closed for not posting sources when he was asked several times thus OBVIOUSLY and PROVEN TO BE breaching GPL. What else is there to "get" or "discover"? What would have been reasonable in your opinion? A few more "pretty please" posts?
I'm not even sure what your point even is at this point. My response to the bread and butter of the issue in this thread, where you accused me of having a pitchfork out:

Exploitable hack needs an update to be seriously pushed

http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/08/0...ty-fix-heading-to-xperia-z-series-this-month/
This is to confirm Sony will be pushing out an update to protect their Z series phones first from this Stagefreight problem that involves hacking our Androids with simply MMS. The issue is for us is that we still haven't had Lollipop to our phones for this long. Will this patch update may even take Verizon to do a hell a lot longer before they could even give us our deserved update? Because this is a serious issue that must be addressed.
I've also attached a screenshot from the analysis app for my Z3v, and we're definitely vulnerable...

Not only stagefright but now certifi-gate, and certifi-gate you need to update the whole OS to fix it, so maybe we will finally get Lollipop, but wouldn't hold your breath.
I feel like a duck sitting on a pond surrounded by hunters, being a sitting duck I don't like.
SO LETS SEE HOW VZW PROTECTS THEIR NETWORK NOW!
Will VZW patch or will VZW not?
The quick fix solutions I have found so far in credits to Android Authority is to either download Textra for your messaging app, or disable auto downloading of MMS attachments on your messaging app.
To do that on our phones, go to stock Messaging app, Settings, then scroll down to uncheck Auto MMS Retrieval.

Good tip, did that yesterday to mine and my wife's phone after reading the exploit news.
Be careful, any MMS can have the exploit attached.

Really bro and what you did to me was kosher? Alrighty then!
Should have left it alone, I all but begged you to drop it.
So now I am wrong for sharing, really?

WHT, exactly, did I "do to you"? Wrong for sharing? Absolutely not. It's what I wanted from the beginning. Wrong for personally attacking by calling me lazy and a troll. Absolutely, I am neither, thank you very much.
This thread was on its way down the list but I just had to wake it up......

Attention rom devs

Just posting a reminder that any rom posted here has to have the MI store removed from the rom. The app is banned as it provides warez.
You've effectively killed this forum, the only source of ROMs for our device. Thanks.

All it takes is having the app removed. Not really hard.
This app has been banned since the beginning of Xiaomi producing miui roms. It's nothing new.

Well, if you say that this is so easy, please just give us direct instructions on how to remove this store without getting bootloop.
Go ahead.

There are Tuts on how to get gapps working.
I have never tried myself as these devices are banned from being own at my job so I'm not even allowed to get one. Nor would I ever.
Don't get mad at us. Get mad at them for excluding a warez market in their roms.

May be I do not know something.
I have tried to look for some warez there - I could not find anything.

Same. Some stupid policies and some stupid myths. Perhaps there used to be some sort of warez there accidentally and everyone is still being anal about it. As you can see mods don't really care about this phone. You can see by posts like "I would never get their devices". So childish

It's not a matter of childish. I have many reason why I would never own one of their devices and that being the fact that the oem is on my jobs banned list.
Also all you have to do is look at any of the so called. Free apps that are paid apps on the Android market.
Make no mistake it was not accidental at all. China is known for things like this.
As for the mods. We have been around long enough to know the story with them so, no none of use would ever touch one of their devices. But that is pointless as it's up to the users to do something with it.

You can look yourself. Just do a compare between the 2 stores. That was part of the reasons why miui roms were banned for the longest time.
You have to remember that MIUI started here on xda before Xiaomi bought them out.
Warez or not, MI Store sucks ass, but banning ROMs is pointless, MIUI forum is trash, I still don't know how it works, and some ROM's has backdoors and for example, they send paid SMS to vietnam, That sh!t costed me 50 bucks!!!

If you look around the internet you will find all the stories you need. They are alos on the military banned list in the US due to ties with the Chinese military.

Thank you, but I suppose if we use non MIUI rom such as cm, then these risk of using xiaomi devices is gone right? also, what do you think of Mokee Rom? As it's also made by chinese people, and you said that china is known for "something", is it might also poses similar risks?

First let me make one thing very clear. I have nothing against Chinese people that make software. You have to understand the Government that runs the country there, to have a small understanding. You see In china they have the right to monitor everything their citizens are doing on the internet. This is part of the reason for the great firewall of china. So spyware, malware and other software that helps in this are normally sponsered by the Military to help in doing just this.
I have never used it myself but as it is an open source based OS it should be good. You can see just what it is doing. The hard part will be the coding translations, as things dont always translate right.
Any non MIUI based rom should be ok. The problem with that is CM is normally buggy and all the roms use the patch rom setup which is never really stable nor is it something I would trust as that is injecting stuff into a rom that I cant VET.
In this day and age one has to be careful with all these new toys that are coming to many markets across the world.
Remember, You get what you pay for. So if something is too good to be true then you have to find the catch.

You are right about the store, i was quite surprised when i found paid apps there. This is correct.
But i'm not sure if this is still the case, i saw them a year ago, now i couldn't find the apps,
maybe they've cleaned the store in meantime.
And a script removing apps isn't hard, just search for "updater-script remove apps".
BUT i've tried such script on Sony Xperia P, not in MIUI, i don't know if deleting Mi Store (com.xiaomi.mipicks) would cause bootloop or not.
I know that Mi Store enabled/disabled is region dependent, you can disable it when switching to another region in Beta rom.
But deleting? I know that when i've deleted Updater apk, or changed its permissions, it caused bootloop. Needs to be confirmed.
But with government spying - if you want to be honest - maybe we should ban all ROMs tied with Google, which means all Androids?
Remember about PRISM and Edward Snowden?
American's NSA (National Security Agency) ?
I have nothing to American people, just sayin.
But according to former CIA employee, Edward Snowden, Google joined to the NSA spying program in 14 Jan 2009.
I think that you simply have a choice - either give your personal data to American or to Chinese people. (or both).
You can minimize the risk by disabling for ex. Analytics app... etc.
But saying that chinese are spying... USA govt does the same
And better not looking for Echelon project...
But - the main topic here - yes, it's a good idea to remove Mi Store from roms.
One can always add it himself/herself, there are also other stores, F-droid, Aptoid, there is a choice
American companies aren't communist nor are they guilty of some of the most sever human rights violations in the world.

Lg Italy security patch response

Lg Italia wrote me about the security patches, in practice patches are released only if there are system updates that improve the user experience, in practice they are never released by themselves so we can forget the monthly security patches or bi-monthly, etc., if they do a system update they will put you nothing else. A shameful behavior. I invite Italian gg6 owners to make themselves heard, those who want to see the answers on twitter find them trying mirdash79 that I am.
And what is strange for you in their response?
You want update for the sake of update?
If there's nothing to improve in terms of security, then no update is needed", as I see it.
security patches should be separate and not related to software updates, they are called security and should be released monthly or at least bi-monthly,we did not have the patches for spectre and meltdown or those dated 5 January 2018, do you think anything? security patches are important, if they do not interest you good for you but for me they are.

They still have to mitigate spectre you know, and we're in March.
We don't know a single thing about Oreo, and they prefer to focus on the useless AI features (thanks to gsmarena to have shown how much the camera didn't improve) e not on keeping their flagship up to date.
If you like what they're doing, and you don't care about updates then don't even answer or read these kind of thread, you lose your time, after all we're speaking about something you don't care

Hey, thanks for replying.
I'm just sick and tired of gals crying about not getting some updates. 10500 threads on this issue. And the forum is open, so anyone may comment on anything, so i did commented on these cries. If you believe it's improper you may apply to moderators or how they are called here.

As you saw there are many users which have many complains on how lg is supporting this devices, maybe because for them it's a problem? And maybe because they're right?
Forum is open to anyone, but if you don't like so many threads of disappointed costumers then ask to remove it to the moderators, or not read such threads, it's pretty simple.
But, well, we are free to do whatever we want (respecting rules) so you have the right to complain to us for whatever reason as much as we have rights to complain about LG behavior that is getting worse over time.
and I'm tired of the many lg fanboys, lg is behaving badly on security patch updates than we clients, competitors update monthly or bi-monthly, oreo on xz xzs x performance etc. already arrived, even samsung and us still.
