I've been using the Huawei P10 on an off since MWC and thought I'd share my camera review and 90+ pictures that I've taken with the phone.
Quick highlights: camera is similar to the P9 form last year, but the software has gotten better and the P10's digital background blur is better as well. HDR images are kinda dull, but HRD isn't really needed since the dual-sensor does a really good job of pulling in extra light. Works really well when taking photos against the sun. Low light performance could be better. I'll have to do some side-by-side comparison shots, but I think low light was better on the P9.

The camera is awesome, I never take pictures with cell phone, but since it's Leica and the pictures come out pro and you have the ability to take RAW, I will use this as a secondary camera next to my DSLR camera.

I'm curious about the low light performance two. Some of the reviewers says it's one of the best low light performers. Others says it could be better. I even read a review claiming that the low light performance of the LG G6 is better. Also some people is comparing pictures taken in totally dark rooms, without any light at all. I don't think that's a useful approach. And apparently if the phone camera adds brightness and heavyly over exposes the picture of the dark room. That phone is judged supperior than the phone with the lesser overexposured picture.

Most reviewers (probably not photographers) tend to think that if the camera
overexpose a dark scene then it has a good low light "performance"
To me it is looks totally fake and unnatural..
Low light performance should be how close the camera can reproduce the current scene and at what noise level at given iso/shutter speed.
Before the P10 I used the Nexus 5x which was a lot better in darker areas. If you like I can provide a comparison.

Yes preferably non HDR and please provide info of iso and shutter speed (if no exif) and what light level it was when the picture was taken.

Ah Sorry. Because shooting pictures without HDR does not make so much sense for me, I can only compare HDR.
But maybe I can provide it after the weekend when I get my hands on my old Nexus.

Huawei P10 review
Yes!!! The camera is the main attraction. 20MP + 12MP dual lens camera is capable of taking crispy pictures or video. Other impressive features include Leica optics, phase detection and laser autofocus, dual-LED, dual-tone flash.

So I finally updated my Mate 10 from China with EMUI 9, I couldn't get OTA updates for the past year or so and I was stuck with software from April, so, old stuff. Now I got EMUI 9 and I have some things to note that possibly not many noticed because I got all these in one update rather than many in between:
Camera quality is better, the auto mode doesn't overexpose anymore and as result the photos are just way better now and I don't have to use exposure compensation every time I take a pic on auto. Of course detail and noise reduction didn't change, its basically the same camera but now the auto exposure just works way better and all the photos look noticeably better to my eye, and no this is not placebo, I've taken thousands of photos with my Mate 10 and I know the difference it made.
Camera app and features.
#1. I love the new camera features, the 960 FPS video with the Samsung motion detection feature is amazing, Sony does slow motion better (1080p 960fps) but this is good for me!
#2. Night mode works, hallelujah! it works! I had my doubts when this update rolled out to the phones as to how similar it truly was to the P20 Pro night mode, was it the same or was it a lesser feature just named similarly to trick us? Turns out, it's the same, it really does take 4 second shots with AI stabilization hand-held mode. And it's glorious, it's really really good both quality wise and usage wise.
#3. AI master. Improved AI scene recognition, more scenes detected, better less aggressive tuning, and you can turn it off! What's not to like? I usually leave this on most of the time because I take a lot of casual photos with friends and when outside, so I like the added pop and they look like ready to post photos, don't have to edit them. But I also like that when I need more control I can disable it.
#4. Portrait mode improved, I didn't see this mentioned anywhere but now my portrait shots are noticeably better and edge detection works better, you get more options for the blur and just feels better overall, probably the improvements from the P20 Pro portrait mode?

I disagree that the details are the same in emui 9 and 8........I think the details in the photos decreased alot in emui 9 camera...... I notice this but I thought that I am wrong but when I saw my old photos I found that the photos size generally(1.5-2.5MB) deceased about to half comparing to the photos I have taken with emui 8 camera(3.0-4.5MB)... especially in night mode (6.5[EMUI 8]-->1.5MB[EMUI 9]) AND SELFIES ..... Yes I know that there are alot of new and awesome features in new camera app(like fixing the auto settings) but the details in the photos disappointed me??
Any one has the same problem or just my model?

Your first clue should have been the photo sizes, it's not that the detail is any less, the jpg compression is higher so the "quality" will be less. You might want to check if you can change the jpg settings, or better yet take your photo in raw format as that uses no compression.
Can you share your camera app?
im on latest camera update emui 9.1.. loss the detail in the result.. how to turn of the beautification mode sir? on level 0, the picture result still like on the beautification.. loss the detail a lot..
shoot in raw, spend some quality time on quality results, quit comparing jpeg mediocre processing on mobile phones
Think there needs to be a thread for photos taken on the P30 Pro, given how the key feature of this phone is the camera(s).
I've also created a Google Photos gallery that people can share photos on (and video). It's non-commercial, and anyone that posts a photo obviously retains their own copyright.

So far the gallery has some examples of the various zoom levels (and wide angle), low-light and some very impressive shots of the sun. I am really loving the flexibility of the camera in just about all conditions.

camera only good at zoom is a camera half good, in a perfect world it would do miracles with video aswell if it used Snapdragon 855

I saw a video on YouTube and slowMo looked absolutely horrible. Also not as slow as the phone it was compared to. Ive watched so many videos on the p30 that I doubt I could find the video again.

I dont like the over sharpness at night with night mode
Pixel xl 3 night sight is way better in term of normal details and Colours

Sorry, but these photos do nothing for me in terms of showing what the phone is capable of. Many (most?) of the photos are shaky or way too soft even at ISO50. I do like how the colors look tho, especially in the night photos.

Here's a few samples of mine, i had the P30 Pro since launch day and it's a camera champ. But i don't recommend you go beyond the 5x optical focal length or it won't be pretty. The noise reduction in jpeg's is a bit too strong for my taste, i hope Huawei tones it down. However the raw files are very nice to work with.
1. Flower is shot in raw at iso 50 indoors.
2. Church shot using 16mm ultrawide angle.
3, 5x at the church clock, shot raw.
4. 16mm indoors at chuch.
5. Building shot at 5x in raw.
6. Hotel interior at 16mm ultrawide angle, shot in jpeg.
7. Test of ToF sensor and fake bokeh at water fountain.
8. 5x at outdoor hotel pool 50 meters above ground. Shot from below.

Thanks for sharing. That is a shame, but still better than the shockingly bad P20 Pro that wasn't actually 960fps...
I feel this will be a great camera replacement phone for my Mate 20 Pro of course until the Mate 30 Pro comes out... I wonder if Huawei will completely ditch 3D face and notch... will be interesting. The Mate 20 Pro is a great phone... brought me back from the Apple Darkside. I can't see Apple being able to keep up with Samsung and Huawei (even Xiaomi for that matter) in the top camera phone space, anymore.... IMO. They have just lost so much ground to make it all up with their incremental updates.... I think android has brought me back with better technology, we'll see if it keeps me.

Sorry to be the bad guy, but there are no real details. It suffers from the well known Huawei processing. This phone is good for the Instagram generation, but it takes bad photos. Not true to life.
Took delivery of mine today. Not impressed at all - the usual overprocessed, smeary Huawei ****e that's probably great for those who like to mess about with DNG and Lightroom but as an auto shooter is behind the pack for normal photos VS pretty much all the other flagships.
Hopefully the promised software update with camera improvements will reach my device soon and blow me away. Already kind of pissed that my dual SIM Amazon device is actually single SIM but to be behind on a supposedly critical update already is not helping my feelings towards this phone.
Any video samples? For me video is more important than photos and it seems the Kirin CPU can not handle video with high enough bitrate, I see occasional stutter too. One reviewer mentioned that 4K video did appear like it was actually 1440p upscaled. One other review did check video bitrate and framerate and both did appear low (I think it was 27Mbps and 28fps for a 4K video).
I wonder if these things could be tweaked by modifying camera app, to try increase bitrate.

I have the opposite experience. Samples found online wasn't that impressive, but I quite like how the photos I take (in daylight so far) look., even when zoomed in. It's definitely not as sharp as say, Pixel 3XL, but very good.
I agree. The dog looks great. I'm also using a Galaxy S10+ and though I love the phone, you can barely take a pic of an animal because it smudges and smooths everything so badly. My P30 will be here soon and I'm encouraged by those pics.

My advice is to not get too excited. The examples given are in searing sunlight and even then there's some smearing and oversharpening. In the case of the dog, it's just sat still - not a challenging scenario for any phone.
Apparently some people in the UK have had the new update so I'm hoping to get it over the weekend.
I currently also have an S9 and an iPhone XR and the photos from both of those devices are better so far (with the exception of low light shots).

I want to get the 124 update before I do much more testing but here for example is a crop of some daffodils in the sunlight from the XR and P30 Pro (no AI mode).
I wish I had the .124 update before family day at the zoo but still impressed with these 10x zoom. My S10 could definitely not do this. Keep in mind that lion was through streaky zoo glass.

I'm finding the Xperia 5II camera and pro camera... underwhelming to say the least. I'm sure that pro camera, used by people who are used to more complex non-smartphone cameras can give great photos, but to less camera-savvy people like me the results are... terrible. Coming from a great gcam port that basically performed perfectly right out of the box (big kudos to Marco's amazing work), I find it pretty disappointing to see this.
I can only hope that a good gcam port comes out fast.
(The Xperia otherwise is a pretty darn good phone imho, aside from some minor annoying things that hopefully will be improved/fixed in next updates.)

I don't understand why everyone is praising the xperia cameras. They are just not as good as many other phones. I come from an s10 plus and pictures were just better on the s10, especially in low light. My real issue is that there is NO way to take 16:9 video with manual focus (or even tap to focus) on either the simple camera app or the pro: The simple camera doesn't have manual focus and the pro is locked at 21:9 for some reason... This is simple functionality, yet Sony in their all "camera wisdom" couldn't provide it on any of their apps....
I agree that a good (or at least functional) gcam port is our only hope (as is for any xperia device). Sony is full of marketing BS on every xperia release about their cameras and somehow they always manage to be underwhelming and a few generations behind.

I wasn't talking about colors, colors are subjective and everyone has different taste. Noise however, isn't. You can zoom on both pictures and see that the 5 ii has more noise and "blurriness" compared to the oneplus. And this has been a tradition with xperia phones as long as I remember. Always a few generations behind on image clarity. I don't think anyone likes noise on their pictures... Professional reviews are misleading, since they are usually done in good (or even professional) lighting on a stand, so they are not representative of real life. If you are not a ...tourist, most of your pictures will be indoors and/or in random lighting scenarios with auto settings, on your hand, for a fast and easy picture. Xperia phones produce the worst results in those real life scenarios every time. If you want to take pictures on a stand, after tinkering with settings for the best results, you should be using a DSLR not a phone imo.

I've just compared both standard photos.
IMHO
* Xperia colors are more natural (more red/blue, OnePlus has more green)
* I can see more noise on OnePlus and more sharp edges, seems a bit artificial
* Xperia photo is less sharp/more soft, especially in the background. Not sure but it may be related with bigger sensor and lower DoF
Are both photos were taken on the same day/the same time ? The posters in background are different
I have both the 7pro and the 5ii and the 5ii is way more satisfying with photos for me, my experience is completely the opposite. I will say the biggest downside is consistency with the sony camera, but when it takes a great shot it is significantly more satisfying than a lucky 7pro shot and it should be since the sensor is better.

I'm not sure what photos you've been looking at but the Xperia is completely smooth compared to the OnePlus. Yes, the Xperia is also a bit softer because of the shallower DoF and because of less aggressive sharpening which Sony is known to do. But based on those photos I'd take the Sony any day.
I have to say that coming from OnePlus 6 into Sony Xperia 5 II I totally agree that the camera in standard mode the OnePlus performs better.. but the manual mode in the Sony Xperia if you know about photography it definitely out performs the OnePlus 6.. I'll recommend reducing the brightness in the standard mode and you will see a better quality pic in the Sony Xperia.

Same day, same time, around 10 minutes difference I think? What's the difference you're seeing? The Xperia makes everything much more pink-ish, if that's what you're referring to. Imho from how the light was irl the gcam got the most accurate colours, my room does have a kinda "washed out" light when it's cloudy and the lights are off.
Also why would I lie? I got accused of lying and about the irl colors on the Xperia reddit thread ("do you have green light? " when these were made without turning the light on...), now you're saying the background looks different... What would I even gain by lying, I'm not a pro, I don't get money, I'm not even a reviewer, just a rando posting a simple comparison of what I saw and instead I got insulted and accused of lying... for simply stating my opinion? Wtf. I just wanted to make a comparison before selling my old OP6, that's all. I did the comparison, I sold the op6, I'm happy with the Xperia, I'm just disappointed by the camera. Simple camera app is too simple, the Pro one is too complex and even after days of watching tutorials I can manage to get decent pictures only outdoors with a good light... which might be great for a photographer - but if I was a photographer I would use an actual camera tbh -, but for normal real life situations in which you don't have time to configure everything (especially if you want to take pictures of animals - i.e. my cats) and the light 90% of the times is not perfect... the Xperia performed worse imho.
EDIT: btw here's your proof. Luckily I sent the pics via Bluetooth to the new phone before selling the old one.

I didn't even noticed that I could reduce the brightness in standard mode, now I feel really dumb. Still, I would replace any day standard camera app with Marco's GCam...

Apologies, I just took these background pictures as different, but its the same picture presuming different time.
My mistake.
As an avid photographer with a nice collection of bodies and lenses, I will say that I'm pleased with the pictures from the 5 II. I picked one up a few weeks ago to replace my P30 Pro. I definitely get better pictures from the Pro app than the Standard camera app. But, since I have a Sony ILC, I like the familiar interface, and you can learn to get good pictures from it quickly.

I'm coming from an OP6 and couldn't agree with you more. The 5ii auto focus on objects less than 6ft away is unbelievably bad. The detail in the 5ii pics are underwhelming compared to the OP6 GCAM.
I've decided to take my OP6 with me when I know I'm going to be taking pics.
Though it's off topic I totally regret getting the 5ii and could happily go back to my OP6. Gonna sell 5ii and get the next OnePlus when it comes out.

Though it's off topic I totally regret getting the 5ii and could happily go back to my OP6. Gonna sell 5ii and get the next OnePlus when it comes out.

Well, you are not pro camera user. If you had any Sony DSLR you would know. Everything is in manual mode, not auto mode. The same situation is on Sony phones. I have XPERIA 1 II and after many updates photos from Camera app auto mode is much better, but still not good as iPhone 12 Pro Max auto mode. When I use Program Auto or Manual Exposure in Photo Pro and adjust setting result is different. Photos are much better taken with XPERIA 1 II. So, why did you buy XPERIA 5 II if you are not pro camera user? Sony philosophy is if you want to take full advantage from sensor and camera, use Photo Pro app : Auto mode for social networks, Program Auto if you are begginer, Shutter Priority for fast moving objects and Manual Exposure if you are camera pro user. Memory Recall is just for most used settings values and modes.
I've actually been pleased with low light photo quality of the standard camera app. Very close to my P30 Pro.
Unfortunately I completely agree that OP somehow delivers better photos than overhyped, much more expensive Xperia 5 II. I've got my Xperia 5 II just few days ago (didn't see the warning "For Pro Photographers only" on the box or anywhere else). Compared to my "old" Pixel 4, I'm disappointed so far. I clearly see that Pixel makes better pictures with zero efforts in all situations regardless of shakeness of my hands and photo skills. Certainly Xperia has focusing issues in some situations. I struggled to focus on objects with Xperia whereas I didn't with Pixel 4 at the same time. Xperia photos look soft / less sharp, blurry in not ideal conditions, hit or miss experience damn to often, horrible selfie camera etc. Going to spend some time with this phone (one month or so), give Xperia a chance to shine and then decide what to do. Thankfully I didn't sell my Pixel 4 yet...
It's all subjective, but to me the Xperia wins here. To my eyes the exposure is better, the white balance is better, the colors are more natural and overall it has a more realistic rendition (not overly sharpened). And the subtle bokeh its larger sensor gets is just icing on the cake.
Sony goes for naturalistic processing which I appreciate. People used to Samsung's bold processing might be let down initially.

A. With the plethora of resources I don't know why anyone would buy a Sony Xperia and be surprised at what they get. I wasn't. I looked at a lot of YouTube videos about Sony Xperias.
B. "U bought a phone has camera, not a camera which calls." I think I understand what you're saying but I'm not sure you're qualified to say what anyone bought except yourself. I was late to phones because I'm quite deaf and don't do phone calls but I'm also old and got tired of toting cameras and lens. I had a Pixel that took great photos and then a Huawei P30 that also took great photos but I was missing taking photos. I'm sure the phone was having fun but I wasn't. Their "pro" mode sucked. For example, in pro mode, their little white icons disappeared when I was taking photos on the white sand of the beach at Huatulco or the white stone pavement in Oaxaca. Now, I enjoy taking photos again with my Xperia.
C. If you want AI to take photos for you, don't get a Sony Xperia. If you actually enjoy photography, you might enjoy having a Sony Xperia. This is a Sony Xperia forum so I don't mind posting my opinion but I am in no way denigrating those who enjoy iPhones or Pixels or Pocos. Choices are great.

i was surperised that someone really reply like i offend anyone.However, i am more pro sony than oneplus(even i had oneplus 1). Now i am holding Xperia5ii which i am satisfied the most in any android phone(sizewise Iphone12&13mini is better).
i personally buy this phone for its size which onehand controls fine.But more than that I prefer unlock the bootloader and put aosp roms instead of offical that drains the battery fast and laggy some how. So i may not buy this phone for the photos but can anyone buy this phone for other reasons?i dont think i am qualified to say the reason what anyone buys neither you are. But i think forum is a free place for any ideas and any opinions i assume. Good day with ur xperia although we love xperia for different reasons.
This is probably going to be am unpopular opinion but does anyone else think that the Pixel 6 camera sucks? Pics straight out of device are a) over sharpened and b) flat. The canned filters are poor too. Enhance does nearly nothing, dynamic is a circuis like sharpening and contrast+saturation, and the rest are such ugly color casts which makes them useless. None of the filters have a "strength" slider to control the magnitude of the effect. Yet the sky filters that have the exact same names and function all have strength sliders. WTF Google?
I was hoping that Google has taken SnapSeed and incorporated it into the default camera in some dumbed down format so as not to confuse the general user. Wishful thinking. Not only that, I can't seem to find a way to tweak the default settings to my liking.
On an ongoing trip the images from my wife's 18 month old Fruit 12 max wiped the floor with the Pixel 6. This is from man Apple hater who will never own a fruit themed device.
To summarize my experience with the Pixel 6 so far; ****ty fingerprint reader, ****ty camera. Alas I dislike Samsung products almost as much as the fruity ones. If OnePlus had not decided to take heavy handed approach to Oxygen OS 12 I would be rocking a OnePlus 9 instead and be content.
I've noticed the over sharpened on some pics and just a general overall look I didn't like right away with the pixel 6. This last week I have done a bunch of night sight pics in the same location I did last year with my pixel 2 and the pixel 6 absolutely looks better in every way. I'm sure the improved night sight is the updated hardware but google needs to work on their eye candy AI for the new sensors in other situations.
Try shooting raw and with night mode (even for daylight) then download adobe lightroom mobile (free version is enough), open the raw file in it, click the auto button and export the picture. Then compare to stock jpeg. You will be amazed. The hardware and image stacking on this phone are top notch. This is the first phone i have seen that has actually usable raw files. The stock jpeg on the other side is something i also don't like due to overprocessing.

Sent the Pixel 6 back and get a refund.
It is the simplest solution.
Not really, since real alternatives are scarce..
I really enjoy the camera. It's been taking phenomenal pictures for me. They will update the camera more as well and with Google's history I see it being very good.
I just got this phone yesterday, made Few photos and I am coming from a Galaxy note 20 ultra... I have to say I am impressed with the camera but for sure it does not live up to the hype on the internet. My Galaxy note 20 ultra makes as good if not better photos and to top all that I was comparing my photos last night with a friend's Huawei 40 pro ... And his photos were as good and in some cases better (some mine were better but less so) 5han the Google pixel 6... Just say both those phones are over a year old.

Did you ever try Photoshop Express fpr RAW processing?
Yes i tried but the engine is the same between lightroom and photoshop express hence results are same. PS has better retouch capabilities if you need these.

I find the camera pretty crappy if I'm honest. Detail in all of my pictures, including in well lit areas, are mediocre at best.
Night mode is absolutely useless too. If I compare it to my old Huawei Mate 20 Pro night mode pictures, there is no comparison.
Thinking of getting rid of the Pixel and getting something with an actual decent camera.
Pixel shots have a very specific look. It's not always realistic but it's beautiful. Live HDR and zero shutter lag are so nice.
If you're coming from a OnePlus phone, it can be a literal night and day difference in quality.
Is it possible that it is the selfie images that is breaking the camera?
What hype was there with this camera? Sure it has a new sensor that was talked about quite a bit, but everyone was saying that they picture quality was NOT different than the older Pixel models.
It is different but you need to try raw shooting to see the differences. Google's jpeg processing is far too aggressive regarding noise reduction so the small details are lost and stock jpegs look similar to older pixels. I will take some pictures these days to show the difference between stock jpeg and one converted from raw.

For me the raw file generated by the pixel 6 (especially with night mode) is very good. It has a lot of detail and low amount of noise. In this case i have not applied any post processing except the auto button in adobe lightroom mobile hence no noise reduction and sharpening at all. If you prefer sharper and cleaner picture this raw file can handle both without any problem. Comparing the two pictures main problems with google's stock jpeg looks to be following:
1. Too much sharpening
2. Too aggressive HDR bringing up some nasty noise from the shadows
3. Too aggressive noise reduction. IT is not only very aggressive removing some fine details but it is also applied in different levels in different zones causing patches which are more smeared than the rest of the picture. For me this looks very ugly.
As i doubt that google will give us and settings to adjust jpeg processing my advice to everybody looking to get the most from the camera is to shoot raw with night mode on even in daylight and process the raw file the way they like it. It is always good to also have the raw file as backup because software constantly improves and in future you may get even better results from the old raw files.
I don't like the main camera for close subjects, the depth of field drop off is too shallow for my liking and the focus area is small causing soft edges due to the large sensor.
People who take pictures of food a lot might have a love hate relationship.
It is also annoying to scan qr codes due to the soft edges.
And what about that main camera for video calling on duo or whatsapp? Is it crappy only for me or are you guys experiencing the same?
