I just acquired a VS990, with Software VS9902AA.
I have tried to look into rooting it, but I don't seem to find anything exatly for this version. I keep finding 11B or other, I also cannot find the order numerically for the updates, I did find, however, that aparently 2AA is fairly new.
My question is, can this version be rooted? I have also found that a downgrade cannot be made, correct? Currently running 6.0
Are there any workarounds to be able to root?
Basically, I would like to lower my DPI and use Titanium backup to remove bloatware. (im not new to rooting, but am new to LG phones, as this is my first one)
There is some new temp roots in other threads here with a t-mobile Sim or something. But I'm afraid that is all there is. Don't expect any updates either, though I am running 2BA

I just ordered my Sprint Hero online and it should be here by Monday. I have read all the Tutorials on how to root and how to Flash the custom ROMs. But I have two questions which I may have missed in all that reading.
1) Is there a possibility where further down the road an official update will not allow anyone to root their phone?
2) Can I root and do a nandroid backup. And not install any ROM for a while?
My goal is to play with the Stock Sprint Hero for atleast a month or so before I feel the need to try Custom ROMs.

Answers below!
1) If you update via an RUU, there is always a chance that HTC will replace the SPL with something that is uncrackable (or at least currently uncrackable). This occurred with later RUUs, and this is why the Goldcard method is often needed in order to root the phone.
When I had my G1 and received push updates, you needed to effectively "switch off" the auto-update routines to avoid getting a stock update that could prevent rooting further down the line. Since Sprint seem to push OTA updates out to CDMA Hero's so it is always possible that this could cause an issue for rooted ROMs, but I'd have though most custom ROMs would've switched off OTA updates anyway.
2) Yes

Thanks Dave.
Dave,
I rooted my Sprint Hero, not necessarily for speed, more so I dont have to look at those horrible apps that Sprint doesnt want to let anyone remove.
I successfully rooted, nandroid backed up and removed the Sprint ware and installed THIS OPTIMIZER FILE (love the lockscreen) but have not decided whether I'm going to take the plunge into custom ROM world. I am actually impressed with how this phone runs (for now) and dont yet need to free up internal drive space.
My question is this: Essentially having the stock rom, is the fact my phone is rooted likely to cause a problem with future Sprint updates?
If so, can you unroot and leave the Sprint-crap out or do you have to go back to 100% absolute stock?
Thanks
Hi all!
So after alot of thinking i've finally decided to take the plunge and upgrade my phone to an android phone. Im liking the atrix and i really wanna go for it, i just got a couple of questions.
The one im planning on getting in unlocked, and rooted, though i can have him unroot it for me. Now my current phone is my 4 year old nokia 5530, running a custom rom i flashed a while back, so i know abit about flashing. Now rooting, this is the 1st time i've heard off it.
Im new to all this, and I get the advantages, but really at the moment all i really need from it is the ability to install non-market apps, but from what i've gathered so far, it seems i cant update OTA to ICS (when its released) without bricking my phone if its rooted?
Isnt there any way to be able to install non-market apps without rooting? Or rather a way to have it rooted and still be able to update when the official ics release is out?
Cheers for the help guys
Oh and btw its running the official 2.3.4 GB
You have a few options, but what you choose is all really up to you.
First, I recall there being a way to sideload (run non-market applications) in Froyo via a script on the computer, but it required being at the computer every time you wanted to load one. But since it's running the official Gingerbread update, you should just be able to change an option to sideload, no hacks and no rooting required.
If you're still interested in rooting, there's a simple root method that could likely be undone, if the device is still new enough to be under warranty. See this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255548
And finally, if you want to unlock your bootloader and try your hand at custom ROMs (and lose much hope of any carrier/manufacturer support), go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho... have a simple way to use it via other means.
I have the GS4 (I545.06 if it matters), build ME7, on Verizon, Android 4.2.2, with root.
I've been trying to read through threads about upgrading and keeping root, installing CM, etc., but I'm honestly just lost.
So here's what I'm wondering:
Is the latest version of Android for this device on Verizon 4.4.3? If so, can I upgrade with OTA updates to that version and keep (or regain) root somehow? If not, what is the latest version of android that I can upgrade to and still keep root?
It seems very difficult or impossible to install a normal, up-to-date, functioning version of CM on this phone due to bootloader issues. Is this correct?
I gained root on this device so long ago that I'm not even 100% sure what I did to get root or keep it. I think I used Titanium Backup to "freeze" the system apk that checks for OTA updates from Verzion, and that is why I am still on 4.2.2.
Anyway, I'm super confused and just wondering what my options are as far as upgrading to the latest version of Android or CM at this point from the state my phone is currently in. If I left out some necessary info please let me know.
Thanks in advance!

did you read the links and look at youtube videos listed in this thread? Remember modding your phone is not for the faint of heart and you need to understand and be able to use odin and be familiar with ADB as well.

I got a notice today saying that my nook needs to be updated. Apparently they are forcing TLS 1.2 and a firmware update is needed to do so. Being the update file is 278mb this is the whole ROM not just the TLS update (v1.4.4 now).
Anyone installed this and will the old rooting tools still work? I am 98% certain they won't as B&N has always tried to block such access. Is anyone still around willing to update the tools? Or even have devices to do so?
I personally still like my NT, and it does all I need from a tablet at the moment (once I rooted it and installed a different launcher that is). I *think* I disabled OTA back when I rooted, but I am not 100% certain on that. Is there a easy way to check?
I have thought about doing other ROM's but never got around to it since this still meets my needs (reading, and a couple of simple games, and email/newsfeeds).
Updated, rooted using old tools for 1.4.3, flashed nougat, works fine.
Oh COOL. I guess they didn't bother changing anything more than the TLS. Glad to see. Now I just need to dig up my old microSD and get this done lol.
Probably will do a nandroid backup beforehand just to be safe. I have a lot of customizations I don't want to lose lol.
On my T-Mobile SM-G965U, I am still on the original firmware versions (ARBG). Obviously I have been receiving OTA update notices, but I can't be arsed to care about it enough to even find the semi-daily notifications to be annoying. That said, is there any pragmatic value to staying on the original firmware in the vain hope for some sort of root method popping up, so no matter what firmware version any sort of exploit is found on, I can upgrade to it as needed and not have to worry about locking myself out of downgrading? To put it another way, is the general feeling cynical enough that this consideration doesn't really matter?
On the other hand, are there reasons any of you find compelling enough to have upgraded your own firmware, either OTA or by cherry-picking a specific version to flash directly? If so, are the reasons anything other than general security/bug-fixes? There are some things bug-wise about the operation of the phone I don't like but, again, not enough to really care. Got too much on my plate. ?
Hi there. There aren't really any major reasons to upgrade the firmware, other than to get rid of the annoying notification. Nothing changed when I updated my galaxy s9+'s to the latest updates, but they won't hurt as our phones aren't root-able anyways. And never will be. If you do decide to update it, just do it over the air. Don't try to flash it yourself. I went through the process of unlocking an s9+ and when he flashed the factory firmware, it seemed a bit more complicated then what I remember odin being.
OTA updates won't hurt, but flashing yourself just may very well. As their is about no reason to be flashing a t-mobile s9 with odin anyways, unless to unlock from carrier. If your unlocking the carrier, the OTA updates don't affect that ability to do so.
