[i9300] CM13 stuck on "Preparing apps" after update - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
A friend of mine has a Galaxy S3 i9300 which I installed years ago CM13. I don't what update he installed but now the phone starts with the screen "Preparing X of Y apps" => when we think it's over (because the phone restarts at the end), well it does another "Preparing X of Y apps", and so on
I don't know what I should do : repair it by flashing the old zip (cm13-2016...-.zip) but maybe I have to "wipe cache" and "wipe dalvik" before?
Or maybe I have to wipe everything (wipe cache, wipe dalvik...) in order to flash LineageOS ? I'd like to follow this path anyway but how can I save the data of my friend such as SMS, Contacts.. ?
It has TWRP and I can mount the partitions and access them via PC
Thank you for your help

Go back to the older gapps.

That's what could cause the problem ? Do you have a link about which version of Gapps should I install ? I'm gonna try that by flashing them via TWRP
Should I do a wipe or anything else ?

The only thing you could wipe is cache without having to start over. I doubt that'll fix anything. You can try sourcing another copy of that version to see if the one you have is corrupt.. Otherwise it's probably going to be that it simply doesn't support your os.

What apps did he install?
Some apps make the system crash. It's a bug that only happens in cm12/13 based roms. Try upgrading his phone to lineageos or install android 4.4

If it's me I'd upgrade to LineageOS 14.1 directly But I was thinking about its data such as SMS, MMS...
I just did a Nandroid Backup using TWRP => is it possible after installing LineageOS 14.1 using clean method (after wiping data, cache and system I think ?) that I can retrieve the data by restoring TWRP backup ? (without the cm13 of course)

I am not sure, try restoring only the data partition over a clean lineage install. I don't like dirty flashing, but you have no solution other than try this. If it doesn't work it's time to start from zero.
I was almost forgetting, try flash cm13 zip, then restore data partition from twrp and if you can boot, do a Titanium backup of the data you want. Then do a clean install of lineage and try to restore the titanium backup

I tried to flash old cm13 zip that I have (without gapps) => it boots
Then I tried via TWRP to restore only data partition => Stuck again with "Preparing apps" xP
What If I flash LineageOS 14.1 from scratch but use Titanium Backup to extract data from Nandroid backup ?

I think you need the Pro version of Titanium to do that. I don't know any alternative

After many attempts, I finally managed to make it work again
Here's what I do (maybe it could help other people)
Step 1: I restored the Nandroid backup I made via TWRP
=> At this point Cyanogenmod13 is back
Step 2: I found a Cyanogenmod14.1 zip file somewhere on internet (cm-14.1-20161225-NIGHTLY-i9300.zip)
=> I flashed it before/after wipe cache/dalvik
Step 3: I flashed Gapps for this version of Android thanks to open-gapps website
=> Last wipe cache/dalvik before Reboot
Step 4: Enjoy

[Q] Going from CleanRom 3.5 to CM 11 Nightlies

Hi, everyone.
I haven't updated my GN2 for a long time.
I just checked my phone, and it currently sports CleanRom 3.5, which is 4.1.2 with VRAMC3.
I gleaned from some FAQS and posts that I do not want the 4.3 OTA update since there's no way to unlock it yet.
Is there a step that I should go through first before flashing CM 11? Or can I just follow the instruction there.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
INSTRUCTIONS
First time installing CyanogenMod 11.0 to your Galaxy Note 2 I605, or coming from another ROM:
- Read known issues ans FAQs
- Flash the latest official ClockworkMod-Recovery
- Copy GApps and CM11.0 ZIPs to your SDCard
- Boot into Recovery
- Flash CM11.0 zip from SDCard
- Flash GApps zip from SDCard
- DO A DATA WIPE / FACTORY RESET (otherwise your device will be stuck at boot)
- Reboot
- Don't restore system data using Titanium Backup!
- Restoring Apps + Data might cause problems and is not recommended, avoid it if possible!
-------------------------------------------------------
Also, according to the instruction, Titanium Backup is not recommended. Is there an alternative that works well with CM 11?
Maybe Mybackup Pro?
I'd appreciate your suggestions and tips.
Thanks.

A few notes that might help:
1. You can use TWRP instead of ClockworkMod if you want, just make sure your using latest version.
2. just do not forget the data wipe / factory reset. (TWRP wipes data with factory reset)
3. I use Titanium Backup and it works fine. I will explain the warning a bit for you. First of all it's never a good idea to restore system apps period, especially from another rom. Restoring user apps works fine if your backups are already 4.3/4.4, I restore my apps every time i do a clean install of CM11 and it works fine. However you are coming from older rom, so what I recommend is to only restore apps you absolutely need the data from, and test them. if they crash just uninstall and re-install from play store, problem solved.

I just did it, and it went without a hitch.
1) I first downloaded Goomanager and updated my TWRP to the latest version.
2) Then I just followed the instruction on the CM11 post.
3) Voila! I got Kitkat!
Thanks for the help!

1st thing I would try is to boot to TWRP recovery and go into WIPE>ADVANCED> and tick DALVIC CACHE and CACHE(nothing else should be ticked) and swipe to wipe. Then reboot, 1st boot will take a while as it rebuilds dalvic cache, this can often fix problems with conectivity. I this fails to help you can try TWRP>WIPE and swipe to factory reset but this will remove apps and data so you will have to reinstall all your apps if you go this way(If you do try this I sugest doing a full TWRP backup[tick all partitions] so you can go back to where you are now if it doesn't help).

I don't really know. I guess you should have been more carefull to follow instructions. If you get the paid version of titanium backup there is an option(in paid version only) to restore apps and data from a nandroid backup that might work if your backup isn't too corrupt. In TiBu(titanium backup) press MENU(top right) and select "Extract from Nandroid Backup" and navigate to your backup (you might have to move the backup to internal sd or install "kitkat sdcard fix" to give tibu access to backuo on external sd.

Info on Cyanogenmod Updates

I'm currently running a cm 12.1 official nightly that's about a month old on my XT1022 and it says that cm 13 (nightly) is finally available for my phone as an update......
When I install this update, do I lose all my data and start over? All the stock cm12.1 apps that i deleted or replaced, do they return? Also i'm running TK Gapps (the latest release), so do I need to reflash it after installation? My recovery is TWRP (The latest version). Will I have to root again?

System update won't cause data loss but a nandroid backup is always recommended.
Stock apps of cm12.1 won't come but the stock apps of cm13 (this might include common apps like browser or file manager).
Yes you have to flash gapps again. You may not have to root again coz supersu comes with a backup script. (this applies to gapps too, some comes with backup script. So to be safe flash gapps again just in case)

Would I have to flash my custom Kernel (Zapdos) again? Also, What about the apps that Iconverted to system apps?
Yes you have to flash your custom kernel again after updating.
Those apps will be removed you have to download them again and make them system app.
Do one thing, the apps you moved to system, convert them back to user apps and then do a nandroid backup.
This because when you'll update rom data of those apps might remain and conflict when you'll download them again.
When I realized the update on my phone ... the apricativos part were , but I ended up doing a clean . I thought it would appear the option to restore a backup of Moto And normally the Google saves the information , but Will not appeared.

Yes, but in the previous ROMs same to make a clean completely, the time that appears the first screens to set up your machine ... provided the option to restore the latest handset by Google settings.

Bad performance/Slow device

I know this kind of thread has been already asked but I am having serious problems with my RN3Pro (2 Gigs, 16 ROM) since years (since 2017), its laggy, slow, and no matter what ROM I try (I tested SMIUI, Cyanogenmod, Lineage, Resurrection Remix, Liquid Remix, CRDroid, AOSP Extended ...) ... I even installed Radon Kernel to try and improve the system performance, nothing helped, enabled zram too, still the same.
I usually run between 2GB/200MB of internal memory free, due to telegram cache and all these things, still the same, no matter what I do, its slow in all senses.
When I install a rom I do a total wipe with new openGapps and new magisk, I never dirty flash over nothing, the phone can run fine but as soon as I install my apps (or I restore them by titanium backup) I go back to slow performance.
What I should do ? Im actually on Pie (AOSP Extended, no Radon Kernel), but im planning to go back to Oreo (AOSP Extended, Radon Kernel installed) or come back to MIUI
Im afraid of come back to MIUI since I love to touch my DPI settings, I use Adaway, Kernel Auditor and a lot of things I cant do with MIUI.
May someone help me ?
Thanks.

lol  your answers lies in your question itself.
Noone face problem. Why? Think first.
What u doThats not Clean flash.
Make sure u r on latest official twrp 3.2.3
First go to twrp . Format data to decrypt data and erase internal sd.
Go to wipe. Press format data
Type YES to format
It will erase data and internal sd partition.
Then Wipe data reset.
Flash rom
Flash gapps
Reboot
Do not restore any data backup from twrp.
When u first boot into system. During initial setup wizard. select DONT COPY DATA. Start as fresh setup.
After setup finished.
Do not restore backup or anything from titaniuim backup. Its main cause of ur problems. Restoring old backup on new android os bring crshes, bugs, drains, laggs.
Download and install everything from playstore.
Its done .Now check ur performance.:good:

Days ago, after read you, I decided to give up and go back to MIUI and then start again, with a total erase and full memory reset, I updated TWRP and also installed all with only a few titanium backups restore (I needed them, so I had no choice), the phone now runs quite aceptable and great, I took a look at kernel auditor before and after the complete restore, before I wasn't having any deep sleep, now, my phone have deep sleep most of the time and less high freq's
Didnt knew that titanium backup and not formatting my personal data was too bad, thanks again Black_Stark!

[TUTORIAL] HowTo Decrypt the Phone and have a Working Full Backup

Update May 23 2019
Now with new Twrp wzsx150 u dont need to follow this Tutorial to get full Backup to work because twrp can Auto decrypt your files
For all Who followed the guide already and want a encrypted device. Do a Format and dont use remove forceencrypt.
New twrp

Hello
Many people ask me to make a Tutorial HowTo have a full decrypt phone with full backup working.
Before we start u need to flash the newest Recovery from wzs150 Team https://mega.nz/#!WOZEBCpD!UlyCdDaP-UxuwvzLzDE4yzaqi5qMz-I8iOkseQ5gmP0
Steps to flash recovery should be already known or are available in other Threads on xda
So Now lets begin.
First of all you need to know you need to do format Data through the following process. So Backup your Data on your PC, TWRP NOT working
Lets Start.
1. Boot into TWRP
2. Format Data in Wipe Section (The one you need to type yes) i dont reboot TWRP after that
3. Flash the Rom u want
4. Go Back to the Start Screen of TWRP and Click "Advanced" and "RM Forceencrypt"
5. Uncheck "Remove DM Verity" and check "Remove Forceencrypt"
6. Now youre phone is full decrypted and Backup of all partitions are working
7. If u want Magisk flash it now
Notes:
Dont boot your phone before you did the "RM Forceencrypt" step or your decryption gets lost
If u update ur Rom you ALWAYS need to do Step 4 and 5
If u coming from another Rom and want to restore the Rom u need also to restore "Boot"
If u flashing now another Rom you dont need to do format data, wipe data is enough, but always RM Forceencrypt after Rom Flash
Have a nice day
Greetings from Germany
Nice, thx for that ! =)

Boot is one of the Partitions u can Backup. Its where Ur Kernel is located
I dont uncheck "Remove DM Verity" and working too. I select both. Good guide, thanks.
Thanks for this!
Thanks for the step. I can backup now.
But the next time I update, always need to repeat "Remove Forceencrypt"; otherwise, phone cannot boot.
Assume this is needed until future update twrp version. a bit inconvenient, but ok.
Hello. I now use xiaomi.eu I don't want to format data.
I do a step 4 and 5 and can't backup. When I want to boot system nothing.....
I back to Twrp and make reverse step 5 and flash the same rom I have and system working fine. How to make backup without format data?
Wysłane z mojego MI 9 przy użyciu Tapatalka
Not possible. Maybe only wipe of data works but i didnt tested it. Twrp cant decrypt the data on your Phone it can only prevent the Phone to encrypt it
still no encryption support with twrp beta 10 people call formatting data "decrypt" or "unencrypt" all across board, so it adds to false expectations. would never turn off encryption to get, like, backup?

I've not ried it yet as I don't have the phone yet, but apparently this twrp (mi9-3.3.0-9.0-b17) supports encryption, you can use it to backup your encrypted data partition. Though, I'm probably too late and you've wiped already...
EDIT, just read the rest of the thread, seems I'm a bit late to the party! That twrp is already mentioned!!
I just installed B17 and backed up to SD. Seemed to work fine

Ahhh no. I tried to backup with earlier versions of TWRP and they failed with an error message. This version seemed to backup OK, but I've not tried a restore yet.
I'm just playing with Titanium backup so once I've got a good backup with that, I'll try TWRP B17 and report back.
Cheers
@vtec303 I just had a play and restore seems to work fine. My TWRP is:
recovery-mi9-3.3.0-9.0-b17.img by wzsx150.
Here's what I did:
Booted into TWRP and backed up Data, System and Boot to an OTG SD card
In TWRP performed a factory reset.
Booted into System, went through the Android setup (not wifi) and checked that all my 3rd party apps had disappeared, I had no SMS or calendar events.
Booted into TWRP and did a restore of all 3 partitions from the previous backup.
Booted into System and found all my 3rd party apps, SMS, Calendar and could browse the web so wifi was configured.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Just a bit extra....
As we know, TWRP doen't back up media data (photos music etc) but I was interested to spot that a factory reset using TWRP doesn't delete all that data either. Pretty handy for me as I'm testing out some backup packages and I don't have to restore all my media files lol.
Cheers
