Can't change MAC on Rooted Nextbook Ares 8 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I rooted my Nextbook Ares 8, NXA8QC116, so I could change the MAC address and host name, as I hate personal data mining and user behavior monitoring.
Device specifics: Model NXA8QC116S, Android Version : 5.1.1, Build # : V3.0.?
Rooted with the binary "Nextbook Ares 8 Stock 5.1.1 Rom modified boot.img" from another thread here.
I tried two apps I downloaded, and they both failed to change the MAC, so I tried to change the MAC manually.
I installed this terminal emulator - "Material Terminal" : yarolegovich.materialterminal_2.1.0-8_minAPI14(armeabi,armeabi-v7a,mips,x86)(nodpi)_apkmirror.com
I can't find any lists of recommended apps for this device, so I just picked a random terminal emulator. (This one is a "Google" emulator, whatever that means.)
Commands:
[email protected]:/ $: su
[email protected]:/ #: busybox iplink show wlan0
[reports the MAC address]
[email protected]:/ #: busybox ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 00:09:XX:XX:XX:XX (all hex, no "X's" - no errors reported)
[email protected]:/ #: busybox iplink show wlan0
[reports the original, unchanged MAC address]
I tried this with the WiFi both on and off.
BusyBox is the latest version. (BusyBox Apk installer Version: 60)
The above steps are given on many different websites, and I don't see any alternatives. (Except for "eth0" instead of "wlan0.")
Has the manufacturer disabled this for this device? If so, can someone recommend an 8" tablet, that is easily rooted, that will run an available app that randomly changes the MAC with each boot?
Thanks for any help.

I finally figured out how to change the MAC on my rooted Nextbook Ares 8, NXA8QC116.
There's a text file, max.txt, in /config/wifi, which contains the MAC address.
Changing this value, and then enabling the wifi adapter results in a new MAC address. This survives a reboot.

tun driver for our hero

Hi!
For the ones interested in openvpn or vpnc I attach the tun.ko module.
Have fun.
Here is the tun driver package. Think you should have a rooted device to make use of it.
To install:
1. copy it to your <sdk>/tools folder
2. adb push hero-tun-module-signed.zip /sdcard/update.zip
3. Type 'adb shell reboot bootloader' to enter the bootloader.(or turn it off and then, holding back button, turn it on)
4. Type 'fastboot boot cm-hero-recovery.img' - the device will now boot into the recovery image.
5. Select the option to 'apply update.zip from SD card'. Let it complete.
6. select reboot
Hi!
Good idea and thanks for packaging it. I just made a quick shot ;-)
Will add this to 1.2.

vpn is now Trying to connect...
I'll have to check the VPN parameters.
Will let you know.
Brilliant work, many thanks.
I've check and verified my vpn parameters, but get a failed to connect. I'll keep reading and trying and will let you all know.
For info, all I have done - just in case I have missed a fundamental step...
1. Installed VPN connections from the market
2. Configured a network to connect to
3. copied tun.ko to SD card
4. ran adb shell to get on phone then insmod tun.ko - no errors, and shows with lsmod
5. tried to connect.
Getting closer....!

How to install it on my Hero?
Hi all,
I have the same problem. Currently using Modaco's 1.5.1 and I do not want to move to 2.0 as it seems that it does not offer any advantage and I am happy until now with 1.5.1.
I am trying to install tun.ko which exists in system/lib/modules (installed with Modaco's ROM). When installing the tun.ko, I get "Exec format error" with dmesg:
# dmesg | grep tun
<3>[152396.817749] tun: version magic '2.6.27-a5504199 preempt mod_unload ARMv6
' should be '2.6.27-44690c1a preempt mod_unload ARMv6 '
How can I find the 2.6.27-44690c1a version ?
Or else I will wait for Bryan's tests and if successful, I will move to 2.0
Thanks for any help
Yiannis
<EDIT> - Moved to Modaco 2.1, Insmod runs OK, VPN-Connect does not connect. I'll dig more and let u know
Newby question, but what can you do with it?

Look forward to it, I had a quick go following the link you gave, but it *****ed (unsurprisingly) at the location of the tun device.
Well done for cracking it
So close now!

From Wiki....
A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network in which some of the links between nodes are carried by open connections or virtual circuits in some larger networks (such as the Internet), as opposed to running across a single private network. The Link Layer protocols of the virtual network are said to be tunneled through the transport network. One common application is to secure communications through the public Internet, but a VPN does not need to have explicit security features such as authentication or content encryption. For example, VPNs can also be used to separate the traffic of different user communities over an underlying network with strong security features, or to provide access to a network via customized or private routing mechanisms.
Simply put, for most people I imagine, it allows us to connect to work.

E: ConnectBot - android market - the terminal app I use on my Hero. You can do all this from an 'adb shell' on your PC.
1. Flash the 2.2 ROM (others probably work, but the correct tun.ko for the linux build is included in the ROM) from Ref C.
2. Download the latest version (VPN_Connections_v09.apk at time of writing) from get-a-robot-vpnc (Ref D), and install on your Hero.
This provides the vpn modules that are needed.
However I could not get this UI to work on the Hero. It kept hanging, sometimes asking for the password, sometimes not.
Note: the android market version is still 0.6
3. Install the tun.ko module with a script, or manually. This needs to be done each time you boot the Hero.
The script is:
'prep' script ( the following 3 lines: )
-----------
insmod /system/lib/modules/tun.ko
mkdir /dev/net
ln -s /dev/tun /dev/net/tun
Install tun by typing:
sh /sdcard/prep
or typing the 3 commands. (you need to be root, to do this)
(I placed my script on the microSD card, /sdcard/prep)
You can call this script anything you like.
4. Make an 'vpn.conf' file .
IPSec gateway vpn.aa.bb.com
IPSec ID youroffice
IPSec secret yourofficepassword
Xauth username youruid
Place it on /sdcard/vpn.conf
See Ref B for details.
You can call this configuration file anything you like.
5. Make a 'go' script, like this (one long line)
/data/data/org.codeandroid.vpnc_frontend/files/vpnc /sdcard/vpn.conf --script /data/data/org.codeandroid.vpnc_frontend/files/vpnc-script --pid-file /sdcard/vpnc-pid --no-detach --debug 1
Put it in a file /sdcard/go .
N.B. The 'go' script refers to the 'vpn.conf' file which you created earlier.
See Ref B for details.
You can call this script anything you like.
(Note: VPN Connections (Ref D) installs its files to /data/data/org.codeandroid.vpnc_frontend )
6. Start VPN by typing:
sh /sdcard/go
hopefully you will see
# sh /sdcard/go
sh /sdcard/go
Enter password for [email protected]: <this is where you type in your password>
vpnc version ERSION

[Q] Spoofing MAC address on the Nexus 7 FLO with KitKat

I recently bought a Nexus 7 Flo tablet running the latest Android 4.4. I've since been trying to spoof a MAC address on it, but for some reason the wireless card seems to refuse to use the spoofed mac no matter what I do.
There's a more detailed discussion what I've tried in android.stackexchange.com/questions/57922/wifi-network-not-accessible-with-modified-mac-address (forum won't let me link), but I'll repeat the main points here. I have tried both ip link set wlan0 address XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX and busybox ifconfig wlan0 hw ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX. They both result in the MAC address being changed as far as I can tell from the output of ip link and busybox ifconfig, but when connecting to a network with MAC filtering with the spoofed MAC address being allowed, the device fails to connect. /sys/class/net/wlan0/address also shows the spoofed address. If I use the device's stock MAC and add this to the filter on the AP, then the device connects successfully.
Has anyone experienced anything similar on KitKat devices?

No, unfortunately not. I ended up buying a Samsung Galaxy S II where I can change the MAC successfully for demo purposes. I would still really like to get this working on an up-to-date tablet though..
Bummer. Okay, thanx.

Interesting...
There seems to be a couple of suggestions here that I will try when I get back to work next week:
- Enable Airplane mode before changing the MAC, then turn airplane mode off again and your WiFi should work
- Deleting /persist/wifi before changing the MAC
- Using this spoofing app
Good news everyone!
/persist/wifi/.macaddr seems to be the key to changing the MAC, *and* it allows the MAC to be changed *permanently*!
Code:
$ adb shell
$ su
# cd /persist/wifi
# echo -n "112233445566" > .macaddr
# ^D
$ ^D
$ adb reboot
And voilà, MAC changed even after reboot, and connects without a problem!

Hi,
I stumbled upon your post. I'm trying to do the same on my Nexus 5. I found your method works in changing my MAC address but it doesn't change to the string I put in the quotes. What I found is that the address I end up with is the unicode values of the first 6 characters. Is there some special format for this file?
Thanks!

Hmm, that's quite strange. From what I remember, simply using echo worked fine for me.
What you can do instead is this:
Code:
echo -ne '\x11\x22\x33\x44\x55\x66' > .macaddr
Let me know if it works!

I'm guessing for some reason on the Nexus 7 it uses a text file but a binary file on the Nexus 5...
I also found a couple of ways to activate the new MAC address without requiring a reboot. This is useful if you want to be able to change MAC address dynamically using Tasker or similar.
The least obtrusive method I found is adding:
busybox ifconfig wlan0 down
busybox ifconfig wlan0 up
commands after the echo command. This will briefly turn off the WiFi adapter and when it comes back on it will have the new MAC address. I actually found the busybox ifconfig wlan0 up command isn't strictly necessary, at least on the Nexus 5, as it seems to get reactivated automatically after you take it down.
You can confirm the new MAC is in effect by opening a new terminal emulator window and running:
busybox ifconfig wlan0
Interestingly, if you go into Wifi Settings, under advanced settings it still shows the old MAC address but the WiFi adapter is clearly running with the new one as indicated by ifconfig and the ability to connect to a MAC filtered router.
Alternatively, toggling on then off airplane mode will also activate the new MAC and it even shows the new MAC under the advanced WiFi settings.
I like the first option as you'd be able to automate dynamic changes for a particular network without the risk of interrupting voice or cellular data connections when it happens.

I tried using the approach above to reset the MAC on-the-fly, but it doesn't seem to work on my Nexus 5 4.4.4.
For now I'm sticking with "reboot" at the end of my .sh script, which works well. Any thoughts / advice are appreciated. Thanks!
great but

Yep, I had rooted My Moto E, and used the below commands in terminal :-
su //to get the root access
busybox ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 00:11:22:33:44:55 //to change the mac address
busybox ifconfig // It shows the mac changed
Now if I go to system -> Wireless mac address to crosscheck, it's still shows me the old one
I had rebooted the phone, and checked the mac address under terminal using "busybox ifconfig" - it's restored to old (real one) :crying:
Any suggestions, where I am doing it wrong ?
Thanks!

The MAC address is hard-coded on your network interface controller (NIC) and cannot be changed permanently with simple command line from your terminal nor in software level approach. However we can assign a temporary solution for your MAC, which will be reverted back to it's original state after Reboot/Power off .
Requirements :
- Rooted phone
- Busy box app from play store installed
- Terminal emulator from play store :
Know normally your card's interface should be eth0 ( older devices ) or in case of newer phones ( wlan0)
after granting super user permission in terminal ( Su) , type >> netcfg
Code:
busybox iplink show eth0
you may change it to wlan0 , if you are on this interface
Code:
busybox ifconfig eth0 hw ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
change the XX to your preference value ( i,e : 00:11:22:33:44:55)
Because of kernel design and absence of monitoring mode support for mac spoofing , this method won't work on protected networks ( ONLY open networks )
and if the lines above don't work for you , try to disable and enable your eth0:
Wifi is ON
su >
Code:
busybox ifconfig eth0 down
busybox ifconfig eth0 hw ether (address)
busybox ifconfig eth0 up

You are trying to access protected network , which comes with encryption ( WEP/WPA/WPA2 etc etc ) ? What error you are getting from Android OS ? Are you absolutely certain your MAC address is white listed inside the router/modem settings on open network protocol settings of course ?

Already explained about protected networks and the reason behind it in the first post . You need to set it to 'Open network' ( means no wpa/wpa2/wep etc,,etc) inside the router/modem you are seeking an access.
Maybe not so
I have tried several apps and every possible command in terminal (as root) and although all can successfully change the MAC address, the device is always unable to connect to an access point thereafter. This is a known issue, but unresolved and too frequently denied. I half suspect their are some "political" purposes for withholding the resolution; many have inquired about this, yet only receive pedantic or useless replies. I wonder if there is any correlation to the wifi chipset, or if it's a built-in Android limitation. I know my chipset is very difficult to identify ('demesg | grep wlan0' yields nothing familiar) and that it also seems incapable of monitor mode.
I have scoured many forums for the solution to this and found only a suggestion to change certain files, all which appear to vary between devices, etc.
What I'd like at this point, is and explanation if not a solution. Anyway, I think the OP may have been misunderstood, ergo my 'two cents'.

OTG USB-Ethernet adaptater on Samsung device

Hello,
I recently posted several topics about this, but now my question is more general.
I have a Samsung Galaxy A5 with Android 6.0 which doesn't support natively. I saw there's a topic with some commands to run on a Samsung Galaxy S6 with Android 5, but it relies on "netcfg" command which is now deprecated and has been removed from Android 6.
I was able to get an working internet connection inside my terminal by running these new "up to date" commands :
Code:
ifconfig eth0 [IP] netmask [netmask] up
route add default gw [gateway]
ndc resolver setnetdns eth0 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
But outside the terminal, e.g. in Chrome app, I have a "No internet connection" error.
I also tried to do an application which executes the commands like that :
Code:
Process su = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("su");
OutputStream o = su.getOutputStream();
o.writeBytes("any command I need to run as root\n");
o.flush();
o.writeBytes("exit\n");
o.flush();
But the app freezes just after the "su" command has been issued.
So can someone tell me where am I wrong ?
Thanks in advance.
