polarized sunglasses (mediapad m5 as car gps) - Huawei MediaPad M5 Questions & Answers

Hello folks,
.
I'd like to purchase a mediapad m5 (8.4 maybe 10.8) for use as a car gps.
.
I owned a z3 sony tablet for a while, it was a good product except I could not use it with my *polarized* sunglasses in landscape mode, screen became invisible
So I now have a galaxy tab s2 9.7, the super amoled screen is visible in both landscape and portrait modes with polarized sunglasses.
.
I'm considering the m5 due to its 16/9 form factor, as opposed to 4/3 in use by samsung on their tablets.
I'd be grateful if some of the current users of the mediapad m5 could try polarized sunglasses to see if it can be used normally in both landscape and portrait.
.
Thanks in advance for your kind advice.

I've tried with polarized ones, can be used in landscape and portrait as well. In portrait it's just a bit darked.

10.8

lcd screens are typically polarized at 45° . which can interfere with sunglasses if you tilt your head. If you want an unpolarized screen you need oled.

Thanks obveron
In the case of the z3c the lcd screen was perfectly visible in portrait.
In a gps setup however it is easier to use a tablet in landscape.
Have you tried yours with polarized sunglasses?
I'm curious to know whether the experience onlyoneme is valid for all models and regardless of the type of sunglasses.
Any feedback on the mediapad 8.4 would be particularly useful.
The m5 tablets are not available locally in stores in my country so I'd have to order it online "blind" from overseas without trying it first, hence the question.

[Q] Screen Quality

Anyone else concerned about the quality of the screen , the dpi seems low for the screen resolution. Is it up there with the OLED screen on the latest Samsung tablet? Reviews i've seen are very vague
~Hawk
Im not concerned at all
How so? 4:3 ratio is also a bit odd for an android tablet
What i have watched and read the screen is very very nice, strong rich colours very sharp! Don't be fooled by the dpi. Remember its alsmost a nine inch display!
Do you have any links to the reviews?

It is the same resolution and type of screen (IPS LCD) as the ipad 3rd and 4th gen, and they are called "retina display". On top of that, the N9 has a smaller screen so an even greater ppi. Just go and read review of the ipad 3/4 and you will see how great the display was rated.
Backlight bleed and washed out colors on N7 (2012), N7 FHD, iPad Air was tolerable until I got a Tab S, now it's impossible to enjoy those IPS screens nearly as much.
Then there's the low DPI. Disappointing, probably still getting one to replace my aging Nexus 10.
Screen is going to be just great trust me! Remember this is a 9 inch display with 2.5k resolution 281/287dpi . review says bright, great colours, sharp and crisp.
So please don't worry!!!

I was never worried lol
coming from a Nexus 7 2012 that screen will look like a dream
Lol I sold my note 3 to fund my nexus 9, I am using my 6 years old daughter nexus 7 at the moment. She added a few features of her own to the screen, jam! Well that what it looks like, screen is thick with some sort of old residue? (Sneeze} oooo
So yeah what a massive upgrade lol
For tablet you don't need higher dpi. You dont use tablet like phone, not so close to face. So all is good

Is There Any VR Related Hardware For Our Nvidia Shield Tablet?

hey,
i have a vr headset for my galaxy s5 and it works pretty well, but some games stutter and lag in places because i think the phone is struggling
it would be great if there were a headset that would suit our tablets because of the larger screen and more horsepower
but i have not been able to find one
is there one around for the shield tablet?
cheers

Man, don't you think using a tablet on your face is a little exaggerated? Plus, the Shield Tablet is so heavy you'd probably have a neck pain within 5 minutes of use lol
But anyway, I found this http://www.roadtovr.com/vr-viewer-7-inch-tablets-vr-headset-hmd/
And this https://www.durovis.com/product.html?id=5
These are made for 7 inch tablets, but I think they might fit a Sheid.
Alternatively, you could download the Google Cardboard Schemes and make them bigger while using the same size lens. But yeah, still think VR on a tablet isn't a good option. Still, good luck
I agree, shield tablet is too heavy to use for VR Headset, unless you are willing to suffer the consequences of discomfort and neckpain while using the device attached to your head ..
A solution to neckpain (though maybe not discomfort) could be lying on your back. A solution to both could be a gooseneck tablet holder. I have this one though I think this one would be better since the EasyAcc one bounces around like none other when the tablet or gooseneck gets bumped. None of these solutions are ideal though
Redundant links in case you're having trouble with the ones in the text
Amazon Search: http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&fie...dex=blended&link_code=qs&tag=wwwcanoniccom-20
EasyAcc tablet holder (the one I own): http://www.amazon.com/EasyAcc-Goose...92228&sr=8-1&keywords=gooseneck+tablet+holder
TacTronics tablet holder (this one would be better for VR applications): http://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics-TT...92228&sr=8-3&keywords=gooseneck+tablet+holder
You could counter balance it at least the weight would be equally distributed.
Hi,
I'm a Rift DK2 Owner since Aug 14, a Rift CV1 pre-order and into VR since over 2 years.
What I know so far about VR... forget it, that didn't work, never. The main problem alone is the low DPI of the Shield tablet. Use VR lenses and you could count the pixels that you see easily. The Samsung Galaxy S5, that you can use with GearVR, have a much higher DPI and is OLED, what is also much better for VR (low latency and low persistence is only possible with OLED). Only that it is a pentile and not a RGB OLED is a not so good...
The Shield is too big, so the 1200p display have a too low DPI and it is much too heavy. Too bad I can't weight it here, but when I put it on my hands I would say the Shield K1 weight more than my Rift DK2. ^^
That only thing that would be good for VR is the power of the shield, but that is useless without the right display and size of it. The shield have a 8" display, that is over 2" too big for VR (Rift DK2 have a Samsung Note 3 display, that have 5,7", your galaxy s5 have only 5,1").
But I must also say: actually mobile VR is only a gimmick compared to PC VR, the technology on mobile is by far not good enough for right VR experiences. The only really mobile VR experiences that is ok but still far away from PC is GearVR with one of the Samsung S6 models. But even that have no positional tracking, only headtracking and that is too less for real VR.

Nvidia Shield K1: 356g
Occulus Rift DK2: 380 grams ... make that 440g with the cable included
For some reason you seem to be using a hopelessly heavy VR headset and you still love it, curious.

Video playback and black bars

Hey,
I got my Galaxy Tab S3 today and to my surprise, Youtube videos and Twitch streams have black bars on top and bottom of the video. I knew the S3 had a 4:3 ratio before I purchased it, but I didn't think that it would affect video playback.
My question is if there is a way to make it show 16:9 videos without black bars at top and bottom?
You could chop off some of the stuff on the sides and convertting the video to a 4:3 format. Shouldn't have any bars that way...
I guess I just bought the wrong tab for viewing videos. The black bars is annoying as hell for me.

Surely you realise it's impossible to fit a 16:9 image within a 4:3 screen without either compressing the image vertically or chopping the sides off?
Mxplayer will let you adjust the ratio to whatever you want if you wish to fill the screen.
If you want true 16:10 then the Tab S is still the best option.

Try this:
* Jedi hand-wave* These are not the black bars you are looking for.
In the event of a sub-par connection to The Force, you could try watching in a sufficiently dark room to trick your mind into not seeing the black bars.

That didn't work.
I went with Ashyx's suggestion and found a cheap used Tab S. The screen is about the same just with 16:9 aspect ratio.
I'm only going to use it for movies/series, watching streams and Youtube. Don't need all the other fancy specs the S3 has for that.

I honestly didn't think it would matter. I thought it was just a matter of using a program to change the aspect ratio and resolution to go with it and it would work. Like on a PC monitor or TV. Tried that and didn't work like I thought it would.
I went with your suggestion and found myself a Tab S 10.5 for cheap. I only care about the screen and not the other specs. Only difference between the S3 and S is the aspect ratio and HDR capable. I get my HDR fix on my TV.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Probably the best 16:9 screen of all the tablets out today as well. I take amoled over lcd any day with a tablet.

The Tab S is still a great tablet, with a plethora of custom ROMs. If the battery in mine could hold a charge for more than 30min of light usage I wouldn't have upgraded to the S3

This is exactly the reason I decided on the tab s3. My tab s 8.4 is a great unit plugged in, but dead within an hour or so doing anything other than playing poweramp with the screen/wifi off. It does amuse me that 16:9 content on the S3 is only a little bigger than on my 8.4, but the faster specs are nice for casting Kodi or Amazon Video content to the tele.

I prefer the screen on my old Tab S 10.5 to the one on my Tab S3. It has a higher resolution (2560x1600 vs 2048x1536) and pixel density (288ppi vs 264ppi).

I think they both look good. I can't say I notice the ppi difference, but I don't exactly bury my face into the screen. I prefer the 16:10 ratio and the tab s 8.4 size, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any decent spec'd tablets currently available.
I have both now.
Side by side when playing a 60fps youtube video, the image movement is smoother on the S3 compared to the Tab S, but the black bars is gone.

Polarised/polarized sunglasses - screen visibility

Does anyone have polarised sunglasses and own a P20 Lite? I am trying to find out which orientation the screen visibility is affected on the P20 Lite (portrait or landscape).
For those of you who aren't aware, wearing polarised sunglasses and viewing an LCD screen results in one orientation being difficult to see and virtually impossible in sunlight. My old OnePlus 2 was visible in portrait mode but not landscape, but my most recent Honor 9 was visible in landscape and not portrait which was really annoying as you had to remove your glasses to do anything with your phone when held in portrait mode (send a text, make a call...). Unfortunately every mobile phone shop that I have visited only have dummy P20 Lites on the shelf so they don't have a working screen for me to test with my own sunglasses, and Huawei haven't responded to my direct enquiry.
LED screens aren't affected but my budget doesn't stretch to the P20 Pro.
Thanks
Polaroid sunglasses and protective film
I have Polaroid sunglasses and taking into account that the brightness can also be affected by my current protective film. I have a slight shadow in normal position and full luminosity in portrait

S7 Plus good for artists?

Hi
So I have been thinking of upgrading to this one from my note pro. The only thing that turns me off is that this uses AMOLED, which is awful for static displays (like drawing) and that it degrades over time. Is this still an issue with this one? I plan to use this for long like my Note Pro.
Thanks!
I've been using Amoled screens for years and never had burnin the key is never have anything static on the screen for long periods of time, use dark wallpaper without any high contrast elements on screen. High contrast for any moving elements is not a problem, it is static images that should be avoided.
I use my S7+ to do sketches and I love it. I tried once the ipad pro to do drawings and I have to say the S7+ is very similar to it. Brilliant colors on high brightness and super resonsable spen. Also handwriting is very smooth. I dont draw very static i do a lot of pinch to zoom and rotate while drawing.
I really can recommend it for artists. I attched a sketch made with Autodesk Sketchbook.

No, there is no problem I used Clipstudio for more than 5 hours on full brightness and there was no burn-in.
