Titanium Backup and Setup Wizard apparently not finalising - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd been dirty flashing LineageOS on my Xiaomi Mi 5, with no real issues, for almost exactly a year so, on Saturday, I decided that it was time for a clean flash.
I used Titanium Backup (latest free version from Play Store) for all apps and data, and all system settings (the guide I followed suggested these 2 scripts were all I needed). I noticed that after the backup, my wallpaper was back to the default and a few other settings had been reset.
Then I clean flashed exactly following the instructions in the official 15.1 LOS thread for my device.
So I have the all the latest: TWRP, OpenGAPPS (nano), LOS SU, firmware, and last week's LOS 15.1 of course. I have nothing else like Magisk installed - it's basically vanilla.
I then completed the initial setup and then restored using the Titanium Backups. Aside from a few settings needing to be done again, all seemed well. But then the home and recents buttons stopped working, along with notifications and the drop-down settings menu.
A bit of Googling revealed that this is symptomatic of the install wizard not having completed properly so I re-triggered it using the Nova Launcher activities workaround and that seemed to fix it. When I restarted the phone however, it kicked me back into TWRP.
Reinstalling the weekly got it going again but I had to redo the Nova workaround. I can't get the fix to stick and I'm concerned that it's symptomatic of a deeper problem.
I'd really appreciate some help diagnosing the problem / advice on how to proceed.. No-one else has mentioned anything like this that I've been able to find on the Official LOS 15.1 threads so I guess it's unlikely to be a ROM problem.. Might it have been Titanium Backup messing up settings somehow?

I'm new to Titanium - how do you see which apps are frozen?

just scroll among the app list.. See if you have a purple highlight on "Setup Wizard app. Or just use "filter" on the setting, and select "show frozen apps only".

Thanks, I looked and neither Pixel Setup nor Setup Wizard are frozen on mine (although they might be just after startup - I'll check next time)

[Q] Gapps missing from drawer in CM 7.2.0 FXP50. Any idea how to fix it?

I'm posting this here because i don't have posting rights in the dev section yet. I installed FXP50 yesterday on my NEO then installed the gapps package. Yet even though the apps appear in Settings-> Application they don't appear on my drawer and so i can't use them. I tried reinstalling the package, wiping data/cache and wiping market data but nothing worked. When i installed CM i was on CM7Xperia edition and not stock though i don't really think this has anything to do with that. Anything else i could try?
I got it fixed. Well i reinstalled the mod twice and the second time i tried setting up a Google account(which failed because of locked Wifi) and then skipping the step. I guess if you skip the step without trying to set up an account it's missing from the app drawer although i didn't try to replicate it.

[Q] GApps Force Closing on MIUI

Alright guys, I'm in need of some help.
I've been flashing MIUI on my Fascinate for months now and recently I've run into a problem. On RickS' 1.12.9 I'm getting a lot of FCs. About 24-48 hours after flashing and setting up my phone I get a notification at boot that every GApp along with TB, Facebook, Script Manager have "stopped unexpectedly" and need to be force closed. My flash process is as follows:
1) ODIN either DL09 or EH03
2) ODIN CWM4
3) 3 finger boot to CWM and flash RickS 1.12.9
4) Everything is fine up to here
5) TB - Restore missing user apps (just apps, not data)
6) Set up Supercharger script (update9 RC5 test 2), Voltage Control OC/UV, Glitch kernel leakage/screen state
7) Reboot
8) Wait about a day and a couple of reboots later for the force close party to start.
Has anyone run into a similar problem? I've tried a few solutions (i.e. mixing up my flash routine, fix permissions...)
Thanks,
EJ
EDIT: Also, whenever I flash weblexa's builds after step 7 I get stuck in a bootloop. I'm going to try to just flash it and reboot to see if I don't get stuck (which, if I don't probably means that something I'm doing while setting up my apps and such is the cause of the problems).

I have had this same issue, and for months it drove me nuts cause I couldn't figure out the problem.
It didn't happen so much with all google apps, mainly the market, but I did get it on others.
What used to work for the market, set your language in the phone settings. Not market settings, the phone. I set mine to English (United States) and I didn't get a FC on market since.
With other google apps, or other apps in general there are a couple a things you can try.
1. If you changed any permissions, i.e. disabled apps from loading on boot, turn them back on 1 at a time. When I disable Google Talk from loading.. I get FC's.
2. Try a clearing data/cache for the app and re-installing over the app... or clearing data/cache and uninstall... and re-install.
3. Have you changed your screen DPI? Below 190ish causes problems for me, like if I dial a number it FC's.
There is a couple more, I just got out of class and can't think of em for the life of me. I will post when it comes to me.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the quick reply!
1) No permissions were changed.
2) I tried wiping davik/cache. As for the individual apps, the vast majority of the ones that are FCing are system apps; uninstalling isn't exactly an option unless I just remove them from the rom.
3) DPI hasn't been touched.

I would be willing to bet you have alot of apps installed and your datadata folder is full. There is a thread on rootzwiki on how to fix this if uninstalling or moving apps to sd is not an option for you.

After flashing RC1...

Well I flashed RC1 and "market" automatically started installing/updating certain apps including superuser. Well I forgot to update the su binary first and when I tried it would get stuck on the "checking current version" stage so I rebooted my phone and opened superuser again and it worked. Successfully updated binary after su app updated. Right on.. Time to restore my data/apps via Titanium Backup Pro... Done. Okay so I figure all is okay until I go to go somewhere that I need to use my GPS.....Then I noticed navigation is gone....so is maps...YouTube...."Google Play" is the only Google app on my phone... If I try to DL any missing Google apps from Play Store, it just hangs and will not download. Also yes I am 100% positive that I flashed the gapps zip after the update. I've tried out virtually every ROM for this phone multiple times so I have enough experience not to mess something so simple up. Plus, I've flashed CM7 on my X2 like 50 times & have the install instructions memorized and yes I know they slightly changed for RC1...
Anyways...
My question is do I need to do a full wipe and start fresh? (Sbf 2.3.4/Reinstall CM) Can I just flash gapps zip again? If I do will I have to wipe big 3 or nothing at all?....How did this happen lol? Was it because I updated su app then rebooted & updated binary after?? Was it maybe because I tried to restore all apps including gapps via TBPro?? I forgot to uncheck them and just ran the whole batch operation.
I would have posted in DZKs topic but I can't post in android development.
I would just try to go for it and flash the gapps zip again, but I'm not home anymore and won't be again for probably a week at the least. Not comfortable doing it if I get something wrong. No phone for a week is no good!! Lol sorry for the long post any help or general insight is greatly welcomed

Nevermind....Phone started acting real laggy and buggy once I got down to around 20% battery life. I plugged in my phone and rebooted it. All Google apps are back now however they showed up in random order in my app drawer. Instead of being alphabetical like it usually is, it's completely random. XDA is on page 2 and easy tether is on the last page, lol
Edit: just had to re-sort apps by alphabetical order under go launcher app drawer settings. All okay now

Same apps were missing for me after I did a batch install in TB. I looked in Backup/Restore selection, second on top in the main TB screen and found them at the very bottom as uninstalled. I just selected them there and restored app plus data. My wifi is still iffy and I get a lot of process system force close notifications that dont seem to do harm when I click force close or 'wait'. I do get more FC on RC1. I can't remember if you talked about that last half in your thread. Since I'm typing on my phone I don't feel like going back to check so yyyaaaaa
Hmmm. In RC1 I get 2 force closes right off the bat as soon as it boots up. Says Process DPS Manager has crashed. I hit force close and another one pops up. force close that one as well and I'm all set. Don't usually get any more FC's. Only other thing is I can't get Opera browser to work on this ROM. It boots up and says opera then it just closes. No FC or anything. Oh well back to dolphin HD. Rebooting nor clearing apps data will get opera to work for me which I find weird because I was actually using it the day I flashed rc1. Hasn't worked since
Hahaha had to edit....soon as I posted this the XDA app FC'd

[Q] Restoring droid to stock

I couldn't leave well enough alone. I am in Europe, using a Verizon Motorola Droid, which was working (although at each boot would say 'unknown SIM - press ok, then it worked). I rooted the phone, installed Titanium, backed everything up and then started playing. I froze a load of bloatware - everything fine. I then downloaded Greenify and hibernated apps I didn't use. It was great. I should have stopped. I didn't. I downloaded Xposed framework, and then the Gravitybox module. Whoops. My phone took on a life of its own. First, my 'phone' (dialler) and 'people' (contacts) icons said 'app isn't installed' when they were clicked. I restored my Titanium backup. No change. I unfroze all the Titantium apps. No changed. I then rebooted, and the phone and contacts icons completely disappeared, as well as my wallpapers and ringtone, to something that my phone couldn't identify. I uninstalled Gravitybox and rebooted. Now the phone no longer connects to the cell phone signal either. I'm sunk, and really need some idea of what to do. Please.......Is there any way of just getting this phone back to some kind of workable order?
Try re-flashing the gapps for your android version. I think Android 4.2.2. And always remember: Make backups. Systembackups with Safestrap for example.

Thanks. I'm on 4.1.2. I have been trying to find instructions and/or a link regarding just reflashing the whole phone to the stock version, but can't find any. Would you know of one? I am a total noob (as evidenced by my thread) - so I am wondering - if I downloaded one of the other systems, like Liquid Smooth or whatever, does that also flash the phone where all the system files are new, or does it build upon the kernel which I appear to have screwed up??
Google should find a flashable Gapps.zip file. If nothing works, look into the firmwares super thread for stock roms or install cyanogenmod.
My mystery is somewhat solved - the upshot being don't leave a rooted phone around a young fella who is just starting to play with computers, as my son has been 'uninstalling' various files on my phone - the effect of which, of course, didn't come into effect until I rebooted, having downloaded Gravity Box. I have been able to find and restore 'People' and 'Phone' through my Titanium back-up. However, my phone is still not seeing my sim - another file that has been uninstalled, I imagine. I would hope that perhaps someone knows the name of the file that allows the phone to see the sim, rather than me having to uninstall all the files. My son says he only uninstalled about 5 files, but does not remember the names. Not a developer in the making!
I also have the problem with the recovery menu, where I cannot boot into it. Would an uninstalled file cause this? I downloaded Clockworkmod recovery, only to be then told that it does not support the Motorola Razr 'Spyder'. Are there any other options? And is the XT912 considered the 'Razr Spyder or is it one of the Droid options?? Thanks for any help you can give.

Need help troubleshooting why my wifi won't turn on

Hello, I have a Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 running AOSP Extended 4.6 rom. I'm using TWRP recovery and have it rooted with SuperSU. I'm having a problem where my wifi won't turn on. The button is grey, and when I try to switch it on it says "turning on wifi" but the button never switches to blue, and it never finds any wifi. It's totally broken.
It's an old phone, so I thought it might be a hardware issue, so I did a backup then a clean wipe, and whattaya know, the wifi worked fine. So it's something gone wrong particularly in the "data" segment of the backup, since restoring the backup without the data block selected acts just like a clean wipe. When I do a full backup with all apps and settings, that's when the problem happens.
I tried to just start from scratch, but for some reason titanium backup is hanging on restoring all my apps and settings and won't do it, so it's a major pain in the ass, and I'd rather just figure out what the problem is on the full backup and fix it so I can keep my phone nice and familiar.
Okay, so I ruled out any user apps as being the problem, as I completely uninstalled every user app, without any change. I can't uninstall most system apps without breaking the OS, so I hope the problem is in some internet configuration setting or something that I can easily change.
Does anybodoy know how I can fix my wifi?
Thanks!

Hello, thanks for the response! I haven't had an opportunity to try this but I will when I get a chance and I'll post the log. And yeah I've been trying to swap to magisk, but it doesn't like the modded boot.img of my custom rom, it won't do it. I'm trying to figure it out. >.<

You can run logcat in adb
See : https://developer.android.com/studio/command-line/logcat
Also you can install a logcat app like MatLog to get logs without a computer (requires root).
That might give you a hint to why the wifi doesn't work. If the logcat doesn't show anything that would indicate the problem in detail try obtaining the kernel logs with dmesg or kmsg
See : https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2185929
I also recommend using Magisk insteaf of SuperSu as chainfire sold it to a random sketchy Chinese comapany.
