Hi, I am thinking of getting a Nexus 9 from http://www.ebay.com/itm/HTC-Nexus-9-LTE-32GB-Black-Wi-Fi-4G-8-9-IPS-1536-x-2048-pixels-2GB-RAM-/221664596324.
Seems like a crazy deal to me, more than $200 off the price on Google's website.
So, do you recommend buying the N9, a one year old device ? I currently use an iPad 4 and it's quite big and heavy and I've been looking for a replacement. Tried the Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 but didn't like it so I returned it. My iPad is too slow for me especially with iOS 9 and it still has a 32-bit processor. So I seriously want to upgrade.
If I buy a N9, I would be rooting/ flashing kernels, recoveries, mods, ROMS, etc.
So what do you guys recommend ? Which tablet should I buy ?
I love the size, the front facing speakers and the 4:3 aspect ratio. However, if you can't deal with major lag which happens randomly and often then don't buy it.

That being said when it's running fine it's a delight to use
yes i would recommend it
I would too, but I am also thinking of eventually getting a used Pixel C because it more open, AFIACT. Here is a quote from here
Yes, the Pixel C will be supported on AOSP just like other Nexus devices. The bootloader can be unlocked to enable booting an alternate OS. Pixel C does not support Chromebook style recovery via USB. The firmware is open source. It is Coreboot. DisplayPort support over Type C is being worked on but we don't have a release date yet.

Open-source firmware!
Does the N9 lag even with such a powerful processor ? Should I just wait for the iPad Air 3 ?
Also, I've heard about issues like a flimsy back, light bleed, etc. Is this true and is there a chance I may receive a defective piece from the seller ? Are Nexus 9s which were manufactured in 2015 alright ?

I got a used 32Gb from Amazon for 250 with minimal lightbleed with a dec.2014 build date. Honestly, I have forgotten my other OCD complaints because they, like the light-bleed, are acceptable. Oh right, the flimsy back, it is just a half a millimeter of between the back cover and the internals. It is not perfect, but I only notice it when I am trying to find it.
My Nexus performs great, but I am a minimalist. Some people simultaneously run Facebook, YouTube, chat, music, bluetooth, Chrome, etc and get poor results, which could be the user expecting too much, or the device being a POS, I dunno. It is faster than my Nexus 7 2012, lol...
I just went through 6 of my active Chrome tabs and had no reloads. The 7th reloaded, but that tab was inactive for a few hours, so I think that is fine. I even have the zram (compressed swap) disabled, giving me less available memory.
If you want to hate the Nexus, you can. If you want to love it, you can.
I would recommend it. That's a great price! If you find you don't love it, you could always sell it and buy the iPad. I bought mine about 2 months ago, 2015 model, no lightbleed. I am a heavy user so I will have multiple apps running, I don't usually notice it slowing until the battery gets low, say 25% or so.
Since you already asked about root and ROMs, I wouldn't say it's necessary, but it does help with performance and battery life significantly.
If you are on a strict budget then yea sure its good for 200 or 250 but if you have a little more money I would either wait or get the tab s2 , I bought both on black Friday and I love nexus devices , have had every nexus made since the Samsung Galaxy Nexus s. I assumed I would be keeping the nexus 9 and returning the samsung cause I don't like the power button or touchwiz on Samsung devices but after using both the lag on the nexus nine is very very noticeable, particularly when switching between apps. It's build quality is poop in comparison.
Thanks for everything guys !
I bought a Galaxy Tab S2 8 inch on release day and somehow I wasn't happy so I returned it after a week. - @dislplin01
I've decided I don't need LTE since I will almost never be using it. How about the deal below :
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nexus-9-32GB-Wi-Fi-8-9in-Lunar-White-Latest-Model-/121835686666?hash=item1c5df90b0a:g:dnIAAOSwAKxWZyws
A used 32GB WiFi only White Nexus 9 for $270
Serial number is HT4C as seen from the pic from the listing.
The seller also posted an image of the boot screen, says no dents or chips on the device but has scratches on the back.
Does this seem to have ANY lightbleed at all ? (Pic Attached).
Thanks.
Looks good just like mine, I don't see lightbleed.

HTC has done a couple of 40% discount specials. You might try to be a little patient. I got a brand new 16gb for US$239.40 for black friday directly from HTC's website. According to the serial number, mine is from november 2015 and i don't have any light bleed at all. I did found that it was charging way too slow, but anyway i flashed the same day pure nexus with fire-ice kernel and it started to charge really fast with an anker charger (just over 3 hours)... everything is going really smooth with minimal lag in a couple of apps, just like my nexus 5. Pretty happy with it so far.
The only things i'm not happy with is the screen ratio, and the buttons. I don't know why my ipad 2 youtube's app filled the entire screen but this one keeps the black bars, and both have the same ratio. With the buttons i don't have any problems since I configured double tap to sleep and to wake, I just use the volume buttons and they work just fine, but i still don't like them lol.
You have already seemed to purchase it. I would recommend it in general only if you can get a good deal on it. I got a lightly used one for 210 dollars, black 32gig wifi with the smart cover (I replaced it with a proper case) and a microsoft portable bluetooth keyboard that normally retails for 70 bucks. It was such an insane deal, I couldn't ignore it.
The IN APP performance is great. On chrome, websites load quickly. The issue comes from how the tablet handles ram. If you have multiple tabs open, you can expect those earlier tabs to refresh when you go back to them. The same kind of thing happens to multi-tasking apps. Try to go back to an app you were using 3 or 4 applications ago, and it will reload entirely as if it was never even opened. This in mind, you have to keep track of what you have open in the background. I don't think I've ever had anything forse closed or forcefully cleared from memory yet (like a music app that gets shut down because too much ram is being used), but I can imagine this being the case if you've got too many concurrent applications all fighting for memory.
tl:dr I don't have any kind of bad performance while in an app, but I do note occasional lag and skips when jumping from app to app, or jumping from app to home screen (and vice versa). The Nexus 6p really kind of spoils your expectations for all android devices, I guess.

I bought one Friday from HTC. Still 40% off, free 2 day shipping, and a $50 credit toward accessories next week. Have to use the link from SlickDeals to get the discount. https://goo.gl/uoyFse
I'm looking to move on from the Z3v in the near future. I'm curious what phones others have moved on to. I'm looking at the Moto G4 Plus possibly with 4GB RAM and 64 GB on board.
I'm trying to keep my budget to <$300. Any ideas?

I moved onto the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, but that was because of a BOGO deal last year.
Are you locked down to Verizon or do you have another carrier? If I were you being on Verizon, I'd take advantage of this offer today: https://www.verizonwireless.com/smartphones/moto-z-play-droid/
The Moto Z is a truly modular phone that LG failed for its G5 to become. This is the Play version, but I'd rather much prefer the Force version as it has a bigger battery, better camera, and shatterproof screen tech. Either version comes with 32GBs, which isn't a problem to deal with when you can have expandable memory. It's not waterproof like the Z3v, but it's still splash resistant so I think streaming it in the sink won't do any harm if you want a quick clean. lol

Appreciate the response. I have an S7 for work which I really like, and I'm tracking the Edge on Swappa. I do like this phone. Unfortunately, I am locked to VZ, and that Moto Z Play Droid offer, which I was on the verge of ordering yesterday, is for new lines only...so regular price is $17/mo ($408 total) and that is just too rich for what I consider a "compromise" phone. I can get a mint condition S7 on Swappa for $330 or so, which is clearly superior.

Oh, it's always those fine print words that gets you. I forgot to even think that you have to get a new line to take advantage of the discounted price. If I read and knew about it, I wouldn't have recommended it to you.
For a mint condition S7, that's pretty good for $330. The flat version allows you better accessorizing like tempered glass and more variety of cases. Definitely make a go for it.
I tried out the LG G6 for a week. Then, I got on Ebay and I ordered a new, in box Z3v. Why? Because this phone cannot be beat. I'd move to AT&T and get a newer Xperia if it wasn't such a hassle or cost so much. After my screen kept registering a touch (after 3 years of working fine) I had to replace my original Z3v. I could keep the LG G6. It just wasn't $600 worth of improvement. In fact, the lack of the front facing stereo speakers was so annoying that that's what did it in for me. Maybe it was faster (I couldn't notice). Maybe it was on a newer Android version (There were a few neat improvements there.) Maybe it had a better camera (Again, after using Xposed to set my default auto to 20MP - I couldn't notice it.) Maybe it has better resolution (It must just be me but I couldn't see any improvement from full 1080 on the Z3v versus the LG G6. Maybe my eyes just can't see pixels any smaller than 1080).
So - to make a long story short- I walk into to Verizon to turn in my LG G6 before I couldn't and they were like "why?" And I was like because it's worse than what I replaced. I got what I had had on Ebay for $120 and I'm perfectly happy with it. They were like "What was it?" And I said a Sony Z3v and they were like "Yeah, you Sony people love your phones, don't you."
Yes, yes we do.
The front facing stereo speakers, flawless performance and still excellent battery life are hard to walk away from. Keeping it until another phone with stereo front facing speakers is available. Too bad people gave this phone such a bad rap an Verizon didn't support it. It was/is the perhaps the best phone Verizon possibly ever carried.

Actually I'm surprised I haven't moved on yet too! The battery life is still good... I'm still getting about 5 hours screen on time. My phone is no longer waterproof however as a couple of the flap/covers are missing...lol. My options are a little limited on Verizon for a replacement... don't like Samsung curved edge devices and Moto mods are not my thing. G6 looks OK but my Z3v still works perfectly fine so I'm not sure I want to give up yet. Hoping the Pixel 2 or Note 8 will trip my trigger. What do you have now?

I have the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. The S8/S8+ curves are perfection because the S7 Edge's are way too curvey, but I guess I'll wait to upgrade later.
That's pretty great you still have 5 hours of SOT. I'm not getting anywhere near that unless I just watch movies on my S7 Edge because of how poorly optimized Samsung is with their software. I only find it problematic that the Z3v can't go into Marshmallow because the 801 chips are supposed to be able to do it. Doze mode is really helpful with that.
The Note 8 is a definite must with all its bells and whistles. The Pixel 2 is something I would have to see when they announce it because the Pixel 1's design language looks bland. The G6 seems like the reasonable upgrade from the Z3v, but the UI is different for my taste and you have to be weary of LG's bootloop issue.
I've moved on to the Note 8.
I have the S8+, but the edges and corners are too rounded. The extras, like the dual camera, more RAM and the Spen are great. I definitely love the form factor of the Note 8 over the S8+.
I am NOT a fan of the beveled edges! And the lack of stereo speakers is tough to take on such expensive models that are otherwise so feature rich.
Meanwhile, I am buying new batteries, adhesive gaskets and glass backs for both Z3Vs, which are in brand-new shape.

Aha, I've moved onto the Note 8. Once on the Note, I don't think I could ever go back to another smartphone. The S Pen is a jewel and the form factor is definitely a step up above the S7 Edge I had before and the S8/S8+. Albeit it is quite a tall phone though.
My Z3V is just sitting on my desk, reverted to factory image and all. Why buy new parts in repairing it though?
The batteries have crapped out. To replace them is a nightmare that involves removing the glass back with a heat gun. On videos I've seen, the adhesive gasket is unsalvageable. And since the back is glass, I figure there is a good chance of breaking it.
The parts are cheap, and both of my Z3Vs are in perfect shape with their boxes.
I'm fondly recalling my z3v while I enjoy writing this post with the S pen on my Noto 8. Ressurection of the Z3V is really all about the stereo speakers!
I really like this phone, I already had oppo 2 or 3 years ago and very happy, I have serious doubts, if I buy, I have in mind these following. (second hand market) all with invoice and guarantee 2 years
European model oppo - approx € 600
Note 9 512gb - 700 € approx
mate 20 pro - 700 € approx
I am watching videos and forums but very few people have the oppo to be able to compare or recommend the purchase, and I am also afraid that the oppo will remain in OREO
Here's the deal, I had a Note 8 and an S8 plus before this phone. The S8 plus amoled display started showing burn ins within 3 months. The Note 8 was fine but nothing too special. I got tired and bored of Samsung and their lag as well. Yes, the Note 8 did lag for me and freeze here and there. It wasn't a MAJOR issue but it was an issue.
I was hesitant at first but then decided to leave Samsung behind and I couldn't be happier. The Find X is not only a beauty and innovative, it's a BEAST. Super fast and smooth. Been using since launch and I have not had it lag or stutter once yet. No forcecloses like Samsung. Plays PUBG like butter and doesn't hiccup like my S8 plus and Note 8 did. Charges WAY faster than Samsung and yes fast charging still works when the screen is on, unlike Samsung phones where fast charging stops working when you're using the phone.
Battery lasts all day if you're not playing games constantly.
No waterproofing and no wireless charging, but I honestly don't care about those.
No dual speakers but I also don't care about that either.
1080 not 4k display but it still looks great.
I got the Chinese version and I went through hell to make it as close as possible to what I'm used to but I'm used to it now. My notifications coming in just fine and nova launcher working as usual. My only issue is not being able to display Google play music widget on lockscreen.
Durability is not an issue for either, a good screen protector and a case does it for me. There are motorized cases that cover the whole phone in case you're wondering. I rock it with no case most of the time to be honest and yes people do ask me what phone is that ALL THE TIME especially when the camera pops up.
My advice, yes go for it but get the international version unless you wanna spend a couple days tailoring the phone to your liking.

Very very nice review... Am speechless my self when I use this beauty beast... Everything and I mean everything's works perfectly... Am using the global version, so no issue at all... Well done Oppo on the Find X...
If you check my post you will know I always change phone and Frank speak this Oppo Find X is the smoothness phone I ever have and solid stable with good camera, I can't said it is better than Samsung flagship but at least it is better quality than LG G6 just no wide angle camera and the dual camera seems a bit waste the second camera only use for DOF.
My previous phone are LG G6, Samsung Galaxy S8+, iPhone 7 Plus and etc.
Can get Pie or not I can't guarantee because you know China phone often don't care those but at least it is upgrade to latest Color OS 5.2.1 now. I am very happy Oppo didn't abandon this phone and update accordingly.
If upgrade to latest Android OS is very important to you, I advise you get pixel 3 XL, Pocofone and etc. Android one phone.
My advise make sure you get a none China edition then it should be very find.

Hi could you be so kind and share how you managed to get notifications for all apps? Almost everyone I've spoken to states Chinese is restricted to 5 apps only. Do you get notifications in status bar too? Thanks
My Z2 fell down from a 1 storey height last day . The phone is still usable but the screen is cracked on the top right corner. The touch is not working on that side. I can't swipe down the quick settings from there. There's a little touch issue at the bottom right side also I think. And the back glass is almost completely broken. I had applied a carbon fiber sticker on the back earlier so the glass is still there fixed.
Also the fingerprint scanner is not working. There's a scratch there too. But the press function of that button is working. The shape of the outer frame of the phone is changed a little bit.
I just reset everything again and flashed AOSiP-9. Except the fingerprint and top and bottom right touch everything is working I think. I'm posting this thread from my phone so it is still usable.
I want to know how much will it cost for the front screen, back glass and a new fingerprint sensor? I went to the nearby Lenovo service center but none of these parts are available there.
Just found that the it'll cost between 2500-3000 for all these parts. The screen is also broken a little bit. So both the touch and screen should be replaced.

I bought a pre-owned OnePlus 7T yesterday after long-time research. It has almost everything I like. The only issue is that the lack of custom ROM development support but I'm waiting.
Meanwhile the back camera of my Z2 too also stopped working. I replaced the fingerprint scanner and the touchscreen myself with another dead Z2's parts. All the area is now touchable but sometimes it freezes too much. Now I can use the Z2 almost okay, so I'm still using it as my daily device with AOSiP-9. I decided to use as long it can run without any serious issues.

I paid ₹ 30k. It has extra accidental and screen protection worth around ₹2000. The first owner bought it in October. If you are buying a pre-owned you should not spend more than 31k even it has extra protection as it is available in Amazon for around 35k, and with credit or debit card you can almost save around 1.5k to 2k. But please check Amazon for the card offers.
I chose 7T over 7 Pro and K20 Pro because of some personal reasons. But I recommend if you are upgrading from Z2 and you can afford, please buy this as it has almost all a flagship needed and doesn't have any extra gimmicks like motorized pop-up camera. Because only a few phones have this motorized type of cameras and the current trend is having a punched hole camera. The notch is a way ahead of this punched holes because you don't feel that much distracted with notches. I tried latest Samsung phones and I felt too irritated with those ugly punched holes. A few upcoming mid-range phones are coming with these as per some news. Anyways these are just my personal reasons.
I'm quoting my own text that I replied to someone.
"Yes bro, 7T has almost everything which I wanted and lacks only a very few things. Like it has a
+ non-popup camera so faster face unlocking
+ 90Hz of course
+ stereo speakers
+ 3 cameras with a wider one and now with a super-macro mode
+ OIS
+ less weight compared to 7 Pro
+ 855+
and pretty much everything a flagship needs. The only thing I miss is the QHD display. I have a VR/AR device so I wanted to use it for watching movies like in a theatre. The QHD display has less pixelated view compared to fHD for this use. But compared to other specs it is not a deal."
How is the Pixel 6 these days? I heard that it was very buggy for a while there. Is it any better?
Besides software experience, how does it hold up with drops?
_Silently
PS: Get protection if you are accident-prone. Don't be like me; broke the second display on my Pixel 5a within 2 or 4 months. Since the warranty won't cover it due to a drop, and I can't justify replacing it given it's track record with small drops, I'm now in the market for a phone.
P6 is made of glass. It's terrible One needs to buy a bumper asap.
But all other is quite well. I have used it for over half a year without re-flashing the custom ROM. It's the first my device with stock rom
I've had my Pixel 6 for about a year. Always stock, with an auto OTA to Android 13, with 2 auto security updates (the latest being this May of 2023). Battery life, camera (it was system updated too), are really good. It's been dropped a few times inside the house, and I accidentally dropped it on the sidewalk a week ago. Everything still works fine, no breakage. Spigen cover. Glass screen protector. It's a reliable and very satisfactory daily driver. I recommend staying stock.
Great one, I strongly recommend factory reset if upgrading Android, for example A12 to A13, A13 to A14... Or when flashing a beta, after that and a week the phone will be working at it's max (adaptive battery)
And Spigen Rugged Armor, that thing is nuclear proof, not a single phone broken, one of my phones fell down stairs hitting all of them and bouncing for about twenty meters, only little scratches and almost unnoticeable body damage
Btw check the 7a, here in Spain I can find it online at almost the same price (40€ diff)
Or refurbished Pixel 6 Pro with warranty at the same price in great condition, good luck!
It's pretty great now with the new features of ai coming with mods and dialer features . Pixel 7 is better if U want face unlock. I want pixel 7 lol but will maybe get a 8 when it comes out these ai features are great.
WARNING! Read this before your initial upgrade to Android 13!https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...e-your-initial-upgrade-to-android-13.4482089/

Yeah, the Pixel 6 has the new tensor chip for greatly improved voice recognition.
I like mine. Upgraded from 3XL when it broke with the black screen stuck in qualcomm recovery mode. Pretty decent upgrade, bought refurbished from ebay and spigen case from day 1. I've done the regular over the air updates and no issues.

I wouldn't buy it this late in the game: get the 7 instead. A few improvements over the 6. Many deals abound.
