Adaptive Brightness Fix? - Huawei Mate 10 Questions & Answers

Did Huawei ever fix the adaptive brightness bug which dims the screen when using certain apps, such as Facebook?
I sold my Huawei Mate 10 a few months ago due to this issue. I've been thinking about giving it another try.

Not yet, tried to get an answer from Huawei support, but they seem to be not very interested in their customers.
I have a Mate 10 Pro with the latest May update.
Their simple answer was that they are sorry that I was not satisfied with the features of their phones and case closed.
So is it a bug or a battery saving feature to ignore brightness settings when you put auto off.
Explained them that it is little bit stupid to still adjust brightness when you put auto brightness off, it is my decision to use more battery and not Huawei,
The answer of them made the decision to buy never again Huawei stuff.

I lurked around different sites about this problem and found this to work for me on my Mate 10 Pro. You can test it out yourself and see if it helps
1. Turn-off Power Saving Mode
2. Go to System > Developer Options > Increase Readability Under Sunlight> Toggle Off
3. Then make sure to restart your phone and open your apps (like Chrome) to see if it's still auto-dimming

Have a look on Google Play for the Settings Database Editor app and hunt in there. I recall seeing a few entries for the brightness which you could probably tweak. No root needed.

Unfortunately no change for me screen still dims on most apps, chrome etc.

I downloaded the settings editor app mentioned above, deleted the line regarding autobrightness and the problem seems fixed!

Brightness fixer app?

I bought a Honor8 a few days ago and while its a great phone, one of the best that was in my hand really, but truly annoys me that the brightess falls randomly.
As i read the threads about this problem it made me sad that as it seems Huawei doesn't really solves the problem, maybe they doesn't care about it, or just cant solve it, who knows...
I tried to search apps for brightness rate fix, or something like that, but didn't find a solution yet.
Maybe someone could write an app for this? Somekind of a background app that you set up a brightness rate and when it falls it automaticly takes it back to the level that fixed?
It would be better than nothing really.
If I understand correctly, you need an app that could adjust brightness based on the available light. And your complain is that stock EMUI doesn't manages it efficiently.
Well no problem, you can use Tasker to achieve this. Even though Tasker is paid, it is well worth the money. If you go with Tasker, reply here and I will send you a profile that could manage your brightness levels more efficiently.

Sorry, my english is not the best.
Not really, it's nothing to do with the available light or tasking. I do NOT use auto brightness, NEVER, so it should be on a fix rate until i manually adjust to another rate.
But when you start Chrome -for example- the system takes the screen's brightness down by ~20%. Sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it do every 3 minutes when you use chrome. You can take it back in the system MANUALLY, but it'll take it down again randomly, nobody knows why.
So the app i would need that for example: i fix the screen brightness rate to 100% in the app.
Then when the system takes it off the brightness to ~80% -> the app detects it, and automatically takes it back to the rate i fixed in the app before. And should do it in the background without a question or anything.

brightness is automatically reduced for certain apps

Hi all,
This is my first Huawei phone. I noticed that brightness of the screen will reduce (darken) for some apps, eg fb, chrome, dialer, even the auto brightness is unchecked. Do you experience the same?
It's a feature to prolong battery, all Huawei phones has it.

Yeah ok, thanks.
How do I get rid of the "feature"?
It's making the phone completely rubbish to use.
If I turn "Auto brightness" ON, the phone adjusts the brightness according to the lighting conditions around it (the screen does NOT go dim when launching apps).
If I turn "Auto brightness" OFF, the phone DIMS the screen when launching apps.
Come on HUAWEI!!! If I want the screen to auto adjust, I will set it to auto adjust.
I turned off auto brightness, toggled brightness to max and used the chrome browser. The brightness remains constant. No issues for me.

After update today to Oreo:
Same Problem with Huawei Mate 9 Update MHA-L29 8.0.0.361(C431)
It's A BUG not a feature.
After rebooting it`s okay and after standby and on again same problem again!
With Android 7 no problem!!!
Hi,
I had the same problem. In developer options I had "Force GPU rendering" enabled and that caused the issue.
Just disable it. Reboot the phone and it should be ok. When it does not help, "Restore default settings" in the developer options and reboot again.

No it's not working. I hqven't this option enabled, and if I open chrome it will dim a little.
I enabled GPU rendering and that sorted it thanks

Automatic Brightness Issues..
I have similar issue with the one wrote here in xda - https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-10/help/brightness-automatically-reduced-apps-t3697589
That is even with the auto brightness ticked-off and smart screen feature also off, the screen will automatically dim after few seconds I opened the Facebook app for example.
I tried opening the Hi-Care app but it doesn't has this problem.
Can Huawei fix this very annoying bug soon?
I believe majority of users would not affected by this because they set their brightness less than 50%. But for those who prefer bright screen like me, this is extremely annoying feature even it said to help prolong battery life!
Thank you.
Would a custom ROM fix this issue ? Only reason I would root this phone ! Hopefully get one soon now that we have a custom recovery.
Can you try exempting from battery optimization? Search for "Configure Apps" in settings, go to special access, and then "Exempt from battery optimization"
I personally don't notice this issue, so I can't test it.
Try to disable "Increase Readability in Sunlight" at developer options
Same exact problem here on my Mate 10 Pro - first noticed it a couple days ago, after i had the phone for a day or two. It's a very slight change - I mainly notice it in Chrome and Facebook. Some apps do it, but not all. Basically, when you launch the app, the whites are normal brightness according to your set brightness, then within half a second, it dims just slightly - like 10-20%. Then if you press the home button, you can see a slight change again to normal brightness as the app fades out. Not the end of the world but still a bit annoying. I never noticed this with my Mate 9 (which didn't get Oreo yet). Would be nice to have a fix for this.

Did you restart your phone or do anything after? i changed the setting and don't see a difference - seems like it still does it.
Just compared to my son's mate 10 Pro and his screen is actually brighter on the Facebook app and all our settings are the same so must be different panel.

Bro, Switch off everything in Setting>>Smart Assistance.
Make everything to off, surely it will help you.
The "adaptive brightness" is bugged and dims the screen on certain applications, regardless of what options you have turned on or off. Huawei confirmed it is an EMUI issue. Who knows if they'll actually resolve it as they don't see it as a major issue.
It was major enough for me that I sold my Huawei Mate 10 after a few days.
i dont have it in 8.0.0.137. bug was present in 8.0.0.128. atleast for me. there is maybe sligt dim for like 5% in music sometimes and thats it as far as i can tell
Same issue here, tried many different fixes and attempts to disable it, still happens in all apps/games. It is noticeable immediately once the app/game has been launched.
It feels like a 10-15% decrease in brightness. Hopefully this is fixed in the next update.
Ps. I previously had the Mate 9, had the very same problem!!!

Huawei Mate 10 Pro Display dimming

Hey guys,
Just got my Mate 10 pro (BLA-29) Dual sim a few days ago and I am loving it!
Have updated it to the latest Android 8.0 and EMUI 8.0.
However instantly within the first hour of using the phone I noticed a strange issue or bug? Where you can be on the homescreen and the screen will be nice and bright, jump into any app it can be Chrome, whats app, Firefox even Youtube or Google Maps and instantly within 2 seconds or so the screen will dim a little, go back to homescreen or switch between apps and the screen will brighten, but then dim again after 2 or so seconds.
Have looked all over for any adaptive brightness, turned off auto brightness and any battery saver and nada, still dims.
The only difference is it doesn't happen if you whack the brightness up full, then the brightness level doesn't dim. So what gives??
Also while I have your attention, will Huawei ever allow us to Lock the phone to 4G/LTE only mode? Or do we need root for this?
Thanks for reading, I hope someone has an answer for me as I love this phone!

Known issue with brightness auto.
It's an IA thing which change brightness depending on your environment
I agree... I posted a topic about this a while ago... dims slightly with chrome, facebook etc.. isn't much that can be done about it.
I'm guessing it's to prolong the screen life (?), because these apps use predominantly white backgrounds ... but don't really know for sure...
Huawei claims this is a bug affecting every device running EMUI 5.1 and above. The standard Mate 10 also does this and so does the Honor View 10. Highly annoying. I actually sold my Mate 10 after three days largely due to this issue.
I was really excited for the Honor View 10 until I saw it also suffers from it. A fix should be simple but clearly isn't a priority.
Looks like i'll be switching to the Galaxy S9+ because of this - it's super annoying especially in sunlight - very noticeable then.
My screen does not change brightness level when using Chrome...I do not use Facebook. Non-pro version here with LCD.
mine also doing this as well for me its fine but some games it also does this not only my screen dim a little fps also drops!! and its very annoying
I confirm this behaviour on my Mate 10 Pro. Very annoying.
I have a P20 Pro and it does the same (all Huawei with Amoled does this I belive). If I enable auto brightness it seems to stop doing it. Only at manual brightness it keept doing it in certain apps.

Hi,
I returned my mate 10 pro because of the dimming issues as was very annoying.
I am planning to get p20 pro instead. Does p20 pro have the exact same issue despite EMUI 8.1?

I have heard of it on youtube.
this is no bug though. this "feature" has been around for years and huawei does not admit it. they alwas say its a bug and they gonna fix it but the p9 had this issure already.
Some argue that this is some sneaky way to cheat better battery life and less heating. We all know that the Kirin processor lags behind the others, it can only provide high performance for a short period after 5 min it overheats and gets thermothrottled

Can confirm my Huawei Mate 10 Pro, with BLA-L29 8.0.0.145 (C432) also dims the display when using different apps, among them the SMS/MMS app, WhatsApp, Chrome Browser and the built in Notepad app.
As well as dimming the display when »Auto Brightness« is disabled, »Auto Brightness« is automaticly enabled every time the phone is turned on and off, so not possible to permanently disable »Auto Brightness«.
Sent my phone to be repaired or fixed, and was told that the automatic enabling of »Auto Brightness« is a battery saving feature ...
Regarding the problem with dimming in certain apps, it's supposed to be fixed in a later update ... Just wonder when will that actually be ...

Previous owner of P9 with this screen-dimming feature. I own Mate 10 right now (C636 134noxloader build) and Mate 10 doesn't have this screen dimming at all, I tried chrome, youtube, and all my other apps, it never dims.

Just an update.
Wrote to Huawei Norway, and yesterday got an email telling me that Huawai is aware of the issue and it's on their list, and is to be fixed, as far as they know, in late July or August.
/ Alex / Norway /
No, its november and nothing changed, now a huawei mate 20 pro have that bug too.
This is common amongst all EMUI devices (I think) and it is fixed by freezing or otherwise disabling the Power Genius app. If rooted, you can use Titanium Backup or Service Disabler to do this. If you're not rooted, you might or might not be able to do it via adb.
This is a battery optimization feature, and not an auto brightness bug.

Any way to disable screen dimming in Chrome and YouTube?

I've noticed that no matter what setting I have it on, my tablet (M5 8.4) automatically lowers the screen brightness in Chrome and YouTube, but more noticeably in Chrome.
Any way to disable this?
Have you checked the setting menus?
Using Firefox might be a solution.
Also, Youtube in FF has background playback as long as you are using a desktop user agent.

I've checked every possible setting, and read online everywhere, but to no avail. It also dims in Firefox. It dims as soon as you go into the app. After an online search, I found many Huawei owners with EMUI 8.0 having this issue. There is one solution, but it requires root and I don't want to root my device after having it for a few hours.
Funny. Would love a solution as well as this is rather annoying
Do you guys have auto brightness turned on or off?
I never really experienced this issue, but I did observe strange brightness behavior before I began to keep auto brightness permanently enabled.
Doing a quick search, I saw one person say to turn auto brightness on, I saw one person say to make sure animations aren't disabled in dev options, some say unclick 'increase readability in sunlight' in dev options. I personally wonder if the stock launcher (which I don't use) maybe is set to override the brightness level.

I somehow doubt that. I am using Nova Pro and am experiencing some weird behavior when attached to the Keyboard ... (the dimming function mentioned here is, what I believe, the erroneous function, as it works quite nice when not attached to the keyboard ...

Well, I went through with it and rooted it. I tried the fix, and... it worked! After you're rooted, simply freeze the system process (I used Titanium Backup) called PowerGenius, reboot and no more forced-auto brightness dimming.

Just disable "power genius" this has worked for me. without root. No More auto dimming.
Disabling Power Genius will also get rid of issues involving bluetooth music playback, and will prevent apps like Google Maps from getting killed off semi-aggressively in the background (i.e. so when you map out driving directions you won't have to reenter the address as you get close to your destination).
Quick note: you have to reboot after disabling Power Genius. Merely disabling it won't immediately change anything.
Up until now I thought a reboot would bring the "wonderful" feature back ...
How comes that you mention a reboot is needed?
How do you disable it? I can only do a force stop
I'm not sure how to disable it without root (I imagine adb might work). With root, most use Titanium Backup to freeze it. I'm using Service Disabler to disable the associated services instead. Service Disabler is awesome if you are rooted, underrated app and great for EMUI because, for example, you can disable individual parts of the Tablet Manager app without breaking the features you want.
You might not need to reboot. When I initially froze it using Xposed Edge Pro, but didn't reboot, it didn't change anything for me. Could have been due to Xposed Edge Pro.

Adaptive brightness

I turned off adaptive brightness, but while manual brightness is set to maximum I noticed the screen also increases/decreases brightness depending on the outdoor conditions. Sometimes seems it gets even brighter that max manual setting.
Anyone else experienced this?

Disabled it, still the same issue. So far tried:
- Turned off adaptive brightness, rebooted
- Turned off adaptive battery, rebooted
- Disabled Device Health check, rebooted
- A combination of above
Still nothing!
It's getting beyond irritating now. Everytime I need to read any message or do anything on the phone need to manually lower the brightness and increase it again. That normalizes it for a like half a minute and then goes dim again.
Same issue with my Mi A3 and adaptive auto brightness.
I keep adaptive brightness on all time and when I unlock directly with fingerprint sensor half of the times if not more phone wakes up with high brightness...and doesn't go down...slider is on the dark side and not showing the real brightness...and to change the brightness I have to move around the slider...
It is quite annoying..I disabled device health and seems slightly better but the bug is still there...am I the only one with this problem?
I don't think its a bug but rather a way for the optical in-display fingerprint to properly recognize our fingerprints.
