About GCAM MOD - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 / 5 Plus Questions & Answers

Hello, newbie here. Just wanna ask, is it really worth using gcam mod? Gcam stock still good. And how easy is it to make it happen for a newbie? Thanks (Also looking for a newbie guide step by step on how to)

I think yes, the gcam mod make better pictures. But on the stock system somtimes really lag. On other custom roms working really great.
To use this, you need to root your phone (has a lot of thread how to), (you need to give a premission for the unlocking by the xiaomi, this is 2-3 weeks), install custom recovery, developer rom, unlock and reinstall the stock rom (if you want to stay with this and only the camera the point). And after enabled the camera 2 api.
But! I really like the MIUI 9 and the screen gesture. At the moment not a lot of good working alternative for this (i know, we have xda navigation gestures app and other, but not the same). And I think after 2-3 months we get the MIUI 10 (as I heard with Oreo base). If the camera 2 api enabled by default, you won't need to root or other. Only install the gcam app to a stock system and fine.
So I think if you really interesting about rooting, changing rooms, mod apps and testing do it. If not I think it does not make much sense.
I always root my phones, but with this phone like the stock rom and think a lot before I unlocked. Don't want to waste a lot of time, great the camera and etc, but I think nowdays not a really really big improvement. Just funny always testing new things for me

Great and complete answer!

Well I can tell you that in my case. The difference is night and day...
The gcam works wonders and work pretty well on stock(?) Miui 9....
And you don't need to do all that to be able to install it.
1- unlock bootloader with methods given on this thread. It should take less than 20 minutes.
2-prepare your phone to get a recovery (redwolf).
3- via adb you'll boot you're phone using redwolf recovery but without installation.
4- via adb you'll modify the system prop to enable hal3 (Google 2 API)
5- install a gcam mod
6- that's it. I did it yesterday and today got a little 45mb ota patch... No problems.
Just be very careful and follow every step of the guides
Gl!

Minimalistic MIUI Rom ?

This is a request if someone can make a minimalistic rom, preferably for the SNapdragon version (both would be even better)
This rom preberaly runs on a custom kernel tweaked to have less logging and a minimalistic approach.
It should have only the minimal software needed for the hardware to function, the rest could be an optional flash package where one could choose what they need, this will not only help run the phone cool and smooth but also improve the spectacular battery life.
this rom if built on the global beta could have root built in , since bootloader would be unlocked to flash this rom.
Thoughts anyone ?
Nice idea! I also have the feeling MIUI is too bloated and that too many unnecessary services are active. I hope someone would consider this idea and if someone misses any functions, they should be able to flash a zip file or select the functions via an AROMA installer when you first install the rom.

Wish you luck, unlocking the bootloader officialy is indeed quite the hassle. Hope they fix the problems with mi flash unlock tool some day. I'll try to help you out when I can unlock the bootloader as well.
I also would like to see some slim version, especially one that doesn't consume too much ram.
The lightest edition I've found until now are the xiaomi.eu roms (around 620MB zip).
Sent from my Redmi Note 3 using XDA-Developers mobile app
thanks for that , it seems the xiaomi.eu roms are based on the latest CHina beta with all the chinese stuff removed, waiting for my bootloader to be unlocked. this seems like the best bet to use on the phone.

Hmm, invalid link.
But anyway, I have a global stable based xiaomi.eu rom. And a theme app is a proof for that (no customize menu on global roms).

This is not an easy question, because it all depends on your needs and on what you are prepared to put up with. Most of them will do a decent job - depending on your needs. For me, I have found issues with virtually every Pie ROM that I have tried - and I have tried a lot. I think you just have to try as many as possible, and see which one most meets your needs while giving you the least amount of issues. I have eventually stayed with official HavocOS - but that may not suit your purposes. And I am always extremely wary of upgrading to new releases.
PS: with the benefit of hindsight, I should have stayed with Oreo - but I have taken the Pie plunge, so that's the way it is ...

There is no such thing as a bugless ROM - but, from my recollection, Validus and AICP were reasonably good.

Hmm ... MIUI is very far from bugless. Personally, I wouldn't touch MIUI with a barge pole. It is the first thing that gets wiped from all my devices.

I have a simple solution :
1.Download your recovery img file
2. Keep the recovery in your phone internal storage
3. Keep the recovery in your pc too
4.Download adb setup in your pc
5. Install adb setup in your pc ( don't open after install)
6.Copy the recovery file
7. Go to your C drive and open adb
8.paste the recovery file
9. Press Shift and right click
10. Click open command window here
11. Switch off your mobile
12. Press and hold volume down and power key to go into fastboot mode
13. Now connect your phone to pc with data cable
14. Enter the code:-
(A). fastboot devices
(B) fastboot install recovery recovery.img
(C) fastboot boot recovery.img
Now your phone will boot into recovery mode
15. Swipe to allow modification
16. Press install
17. Install the recovery you kept in internal storage
Thats it...now reboot..
I personally reccommend Orangefox recovery

Best rom for stability and most vanilla android experience

For ages I have tried to avoid rooting my phone, mainly due to Google Pay. But with the constant issues and also now that I've just purchased bPay for my watch anyway, I no longer need Google Pay.
Even though my phone is not rooted, most apps thought it was.. so even the fixes only worked so far.. so screw it. haha.
I would like to root my phone and try and make my Xiaomi as close to vanilla Android as possible. What roms would people suggest?
Is the Xiaomi a wise phone to modify? Will I loose any features (camera etc)?
I have only really ever used OnePlus One devices, and other phones I have always relied on Google Pay access, so its been awhile since I rooted a phone and I have a feeling things may have changed a fair bit.. maybe even become more simple?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
My device; Mi 8 128GB, chinese import. Arrived with unlocked bootloader and global rom.. somehow.. even though global wasnt available at the time.. have since has xiaomi.eu rom, most recent on the device. But im finding its waaay to buggy and im very eager to get rid of this.
try pixel experience
stock experience like the pixel 3 xl
almost the same camera if not better
great battery life stable and way smoother than miui 10
I was In a similar predicament
I went for havoc and find its fantastic
Similar to pixel experience but with more added features
Has gcam implemented already

pixel experience rom has everything that a pixel phone has including the amazing gcam
Use syberia! aosp based like all but best battery so far
You can try pixel experience, I'm using it for a while now and never thought of changing to another rom. This will be my permanent rom I guess. Pixel3ROM is also nice, but it's just a port so the dev heavily refuses to add compatibility features like IR camera support for face unlock etc. So main features of the device won't work kn that one.
LineageOS is just another option, but it feels so empty compared to Pixel Experience. Yes, it can be customized but it'll never get the capabilities of Pixel Experience, due to official Rom policies of LOS.
And another thing, my device is rooted and I'm using PE, and Google Pay is working.

About camera, it hss a Google Camera port that I can't really remember the name of dev, and you can flash the miui camera port from Magisk if you need that either.
If you have any questions about this rom, I'd love to answer them, I can consider myself as an experienced user of it I guess. I used miui for 2 weeks thanks to bootloader unlock timer, and believe me, when you switch, you will feel like tons of weight just pulled out of your shoulders.
Thanks everyone this is all really helpful to know. Sounds like Pixel Experience is the one to try first.

This is really handy to know. I was thinking today that maybe rooting etc my phone myself properly would give me better control over getting that set up to work properly.
One more thing, just checking over the instructions and a little lost on some bits;
Flash Instructions
1. Download ROM zip.
2 . Advanced Wipe: System, Data, Cache and Dalvik/cache - Already have TWRP from installing Xiaomi.eu rom.
3. Flash latest MIUI or Xiaomi.eu beta. - This step confuses me.. if I already have a xiaomi.eu rom installed, I presume I would skip this?
4. Flash Pixel Experience.
5. Flash Dm-verity and reboot into TWRP (Only if you're coming from MIUI stock. Skip that if you're coming from another custom ROM) - Guessing again, I would skip this as I am already on TWRP? Unsure what dm-verity is..
6. Advanced Wipe: Data
7. Reboot & enjoy.
Some background on the current config phone wise. Imported a Mi 8 before it was released globally, nor even a date was released at that point. The phone arrived with global rom I believe.. the bootloader was already unlocked however and it was in English, so I am unsure how they had the global rom on it.. unless was the chinese one in English? Eitherway. I just followed the usual guide to flashing Xiaomi.eu on the phone. TWRP was already on it, but it is a chinese version, in english, but with chinese text on the loading screen.. unsure if normal?
Thanks again!

You can't skip the 3rd step since you're wiping the system partition, vendor and/or firmware files will be gone, which are not included with the rom.
At 5th, https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/universal-dm-verity-forceencrypt-t3817389 After flashing this, reboot to recovery in order to do advanced wipe. Just follow the steps, don't be lazy!
Not sure about your phone, but there are a high chance of being a Chinese variant of your phone, check the rear glass for CE certificate logo, if there are any chinese text, your phone is a chinese variant. In this situation, be careful to not lock your bootloader.

Thanks this is really helpful.
When I got the phone there was a sticker on the back which was in Chinese, all the packaging was too. The text printed on the phones actual case is in English however.
Update: All done and all was a success. Thanks everyone!
Tried Pixel Experience - battery drain was so extreme had to flash another rom..
So now trying Havoc.. way too many bugs, no sound on alarms, phone stops responding to touch.. ergh. Battery is good though.. haha.
Looking like there may not be any rom which isnt free of bugs or battery drain on the Mi 8..
Sadly Google Pay, with Magisk and hide, does not work on any rom. Altho I managed to get another banking app to work by using Magisk hide ironically.

+1 that. Everything works perfect for me on AOSIP and I've been using it as my daily driver for a week now.
I just replaced the default phone, contact and messaging apps with the Google ones with App systemizer and magisk, and replaced the stock cam with latest Gcam.

(MOD) Center Clock Mod - Magisk Module - Android 11

Hi all,
One of the things that was missing for me was the center clock.
The void in the middle needed to be filled so here you have a module to place the clock smack in the middle, it's not off center like previous mods, this one is as it should be.
Flashing always at your own risk, please read all instructions before flashing, module has been tested and is working on the latest android 11 BA running OOS, untested on non OOS ROM's

Troubleshooting
------------------------------
Magisk module failure.
This works for any magisk module failure.
1. Power off your phone by holding the power button, then turn it back on.
2. As your phone gets to the bootloader warning screen, press and hold volume up and down and continue to hold until the phone shows the boot animation.
3. You'll boot to safe mode, simply reboot once more.
4. On next boot all your magisk modules will be disabled, remove the problematic module and re-enable the functional ones.

Can ask pal..will be tomorrow tho.
Why don't you just update to 11. It's way better than 10 anyway.

I don't have an easy route to 11.
I'm on a Sprint\Tmo OP8.
I don't have Local Upgrade.
OTA disabled due to root and Tmo hasn't finished A11 anyway.
I'm hoping someone will make a A11 full rom to flash via TWRP to get me there

I've been reading that thread for days and only get more confused the more I read...
I have to MSM back to stock? Then convert via fastboot? Idk... Very confusing reading it all.
Or I'm just too dense.

Lol nah it's worrying doing these things but it's not usually as hard as you think.
Get it planned out before hand, I've rebranded before, on the p20 pro and I think a few HTC devices.
You'd be hard pushed to brick a OnePlus phone tbh.
But you're right to be careful. Just make a back up first.

Yeah. I got a backup of persist.img and boot partition.

So persist and boot is fine. But you probably won't be needing any of them.
As for the rest of it, backing up via twrp is one thing but at the point there ain't a functional copy of twrp for 11.
So backing up to twrp might not be the best idea.
I got out all my pics, vids, music, synced contacts with an account (Google) or sync everything to Google (I don't mean a back up as a single image, that's your choice)
Apps I would make a titanium back up of.
Then theres pretty much nothing left.
Copy all the titanium files out, that'll serve you well when you're ready to restore.
Then head down the rebranding route..
I'm not great with changing variant but I would back up also maybe your EFS partition if that's still a thing (IMEI's) just because of the networks hold on things, I can't think of anything else you could lose out on..
I'll check out the rebranding guides and see if I can make easier sense of it for you.

Sadly some games and streaming apps like amazon prime display below the front canera....the result is a black bar just till the front camera
The notchkiller mods solved that issue but none of them working on android 11 so i was just asking if there any compatible version of the mod
Earlier netflix had this problem too but now they have solved it.

There's a feature to change screen in android 11.
Plus you have the cut out option in display.

[CLOSED] Rick's Rom DUB5 SM-N986U1 Snapdragon Safe Update To One UI 3.1

First, I am not responsible to what happens after you flash this. If your phone dose not work afterwords it is your own doing. I didn't force you to flash it..
This is a stock rom for the most part for the Snapdragon Note 20 Ultra U1 that I use as my daily driver. I disabled file encryption, removed knox, fixed screen cast and shealth plus Bluetooth and smartwatch pairing. Most of the Google apps are uninstallable. I'll try to keep this up to date every month the best I can. Enjoy.
You Must Have A Unlocked Bootloader and a SM-N986 U1 or U Ultra to proceed. This Might Wipe Your Data!! Make a Back up!!.
Instructions:
1: Flash with Odin in the respective slots (bl, ap, cp and csc).
2: Wipe and format data in recovery if coming from a different rom or android version.
3: Reboot and set it up.
Enjoy.
See this thread or this thread if you need a unlock. The teams there are great!
Built With SuperR's Kitchen
Thanks @afaneh92 for the unlock and TWRP
Thanks @bklyn_syed for sharing the fixes for Bluetooth and shealth.

Thanks I built it last night.
Anyone who downloaded this before this post please re-download the rom. I had a file mixed up with another rom by mistake, sorry. New files are uploading now. Please report any problems you may have if any, Thanks.
I uploaded some a new build that addresses the game launcher crash and theme store crash.
@Misterxtc Very glad to see more custom roms being built.
Would you be able to build an AOSP rom for the Note 20 Ultra (SM-986U)?
Would love to see an AOSP rom like Lineage OS or Havoc OS

Me too but I haven't gotten one to boot properly yet. I also own a S20+ and would like to build something for both. I am exploring the options.

I don't think so but I'm really not sure, I haven't looked into it. The big deal for me is downloading more firmware, keeping track of more files, storage space and time. Honestly it's pretty simple to build your own. You can get all the info you need for that here .
@Misterxtc, what is your preferred method for root access?

I was sitting here debating on whether to go with 10 or 11 lol. Durrr me...I'm all for a custom cleaned up ROM any day over the untouched stock firmware. I see that your ROM is on the latest 11 (CUA1). Nice!
Since your tweaking the universal U1 firmware and since there isn't any carrier bloatware in there, is there much to really remove to make it even more lean and lighter? I know in the old days those firmware's were loaded with bloat and by removing them helped it a lot.
I also noticed that the latest 11 file size was smaller than the latest 10. From what you can see is that from just making 11 more efficient, thus making it lighter?
Regarding the change log:
Disabled File Encryption - Is that for the entire device file encryption or the built in folder encryption that was disabled? What are the benefits from disabling this? Does it just make it smoother even if you don't use the encryption feature on the device?
Removed Knox - Does using a smart watch to use Samsung Pay etc... still a work around even with the device knox removed?
Are there any settings to be able to tweak camera settings to improve the camera? iirc back in the Note 3 and 4 days, a Dev said that there was a value in the image quality or something that was set to I think 8 instead of the max 10? He had maxed that out and included that in the ROM... I'm curious if such adjustments exist in the 11?
Does the CUA1 have the baked in Microsoft Swiftkey (VIRUS) or is that only on carrier firmware's?
I have the Unlocked varaint of the Note 20 Ultra straight from Samsung. Oddly, it came with firmware ATGO, which is ATT lol.. but I'm on TM. What has been annoying is that I can't uninstall the darn microsoft swiftkey.
I love Swiftkey as a keyboard (best touch accuracy IMO), but despise the intrusivemness, so I like to use my own tweaked swiftkey with the internet premissions removed w/ using AFWall+ to block everything else. ie...
The thing is that I haven't been able to install the tweaked swiftkey due to it not letting me since the stock MS one is baked in...
