Mate 9 screen brighter than Mate 10 Pro screen? - Huawei Mate 10 Questions & Answers

Hello everyone. I just purchased the Mate 10 Pro and compared it to my Current mate 9. At same brightness levels, the mate 9 is much brighter than the mate 10 Pro. Any ideas how that could be? I'm aware the mate 9 has a LCD display and mate 10 Pro is an amoled. I'm also noticed the screen dimming issue on the mate 10 Pro, which is also a big annoyance.
Can anyone attest to this or has seen this? Any settings or suggestions?

Yes, mate 9 has brighter screen than mate 10 pro. No, you cant compare them, because you cant set them to the same brightness. No, setting the screen slider to the same place doesnt translate to the same brightness, thats not how it works, especially when screens have different brightness in the first place.

Got it. How would that affect battery life?

LCD screens require the backlight to be on all the time. AMOLED is directly lit by each
pixel or quad of pixels (red, green blue) or however the matrix is arranged. There is no
"always on" backlight with AMOLED, which, in theory, should lengthen battery life.
Your mileage, may vary though...

Mate 10 Screen Quality

Hi, i'm interested in buying this phone to replace my current S7.
Coming from an Amoled display makes me curious about the IPS screen quality of the Mate 10.
Compared with other Flagship's IPS displays out there, Is it on par with let's say the iphone 7/8's screen or is it better/worse?
Would appreciate for your responses, thanks for the attention.
It's slightly worse display, I just switched from an iPhone 7+. Colors on the iPhone are more vibrant and can display more colors I think.
Seems like it's not DCI P3 compliant.
I switched from my Galaxy Note Edge and found the LCD display worse at first but I have gotten used to it. Make sure to turn on vivid mode (which doesn't seem to be on by default but makes so much difference - you can see how washed out the Mate 10 colors are in the shop side by side with the Mate 10 Pro which I find so stupid because as soon as I turn on vivid mode for them, they look more comparable), switch off the auto-brightness and set the resolution to QHD and turn off smart display resolution (Battery life will take a slight hit but it is so worth it). You will grow to like it that way especially when you see how crisp the display is when playing high resolution games. Viewing angles can't compare to the Samsung AMOLED screen though.
Worst, bad experience in sunny day. M9 have better display. I have M10Pro

Mate 9 screen brighter than Mate 10?

I compared these 2 phones in full sun and the Mate 9 is much better. Huawei affirms that the Mate 10 has 730 nits of maximum brightness What is there to do to activate those 730 nits?
Huawei lies?
Yes, the Mate 9's brightness is quite a bit higher than the Mate 10.
Mate 10 only hits it's max brightness outside in the sun. You cannot toggle it to the maximum, sadly. I think it tops out at around 430 nits otherwise. They should patch that out. It honestly makes the screen look duller than the Mate 9.
The brightness and the adaptive brightness bug are my only to complaints so far. They need to fix both. I understand they probably implemented them to help battery life but that should be my choice, not theirs.

And the 730 nits where are they?
I do not see them even in the sun ...
Caring for a 4000 Mah battery is an idiocy on the part of Huawei ...

Ya, true with the comparison of Mate 9 & 10 side by side, we can tell the maximum brightness at peak. Mate 9 with 626 nits and Mate 10 730 nits isn't quite true. The Mate 9 produce a brighter and vibrant screen than Mate 10. Hope Huawei can come out new patches OTA to solve this problem.

That's not going to happen, I've never seen that with an update. Mate 10 is like that and that's how it will stay. Huawei has cheated us like Chinese ... Last year he did with memories, this year with the screen brightness
I noticed the same thing with my Mate 9 to the Mate 10 pro.

Is this the best smartphone of 2018 in your opinion?

Hey guys, so I've been really overthinking all day if I should get the Mate 20 Pro. The 3 main phones I've been using this year are S9+, OP6, Note 9 but I won't count the S9+ as the Note 9 is exactly the same but with bigger battery, bigger screen and the spen (it's cool the first week and then I forget about it, but I do get others use it on a daily basis so there's no competition for the note) . So both the Note 9 and OP6 have things that I've personally missed from the other device, however, at least on paper, the Mate 20 Pro seems to have it almost all.
What I missed about Samsung while owned OP6:
*Better OLED screen colors, higher resolution and brightness
*Stereo speakers
*Wireless charging
*IP68 peace of mind
*Higher volume with BT earbuds (don't know if 20 Pro has this)
*Not really missed but wanted the 4000+ mah battery on Note 9
*Always on display
*Samsung pay with MST (but no big deal since still have my Gear S3 frontier watch)
*One-handed mode
What I miss about OP6 currently on Note 9:
*Really fast/fluid/smooth UI (although I've heard some reviewers complaining about the 20 Pro dropping frames but at least should be better than lagsung)
*Native gestures navigation
*Actually FAST Cable charging
*Lighter and smaller body (pocketability and one hand use)
*Fast unlock, either fingerprint or face/iris are slow on Note 9
*OP6 didn't drain too much battery on idle, on days that I almost don't use the phone Note 9 4000 mah battery performs very similar to 3300 mah battery on OP6
Better than both previous phones/new to me features really looking forward to try:
*3D fast and secure face unlock
*In-display fingerprint sensor
*Raise to wake
*Knuckle gestures to start multitasking, take screenshots, launch apps, etc.
*Triple camera, amazing low light performance
What I think I'd miss if I switch to Mate 20 Pro:
*Slightly wider and notchless screen on Note 9, maybe better colors and brighness?
*BT audio? No dolby atmos, lower volume?
*Stereo speakers are worse than note 9 according to reviewers
*Fingerprint gesture to bring down notification panel
I've seen a lot of comments on other forums and on YouTube claiming the Note 9 is "waaaay better" than the Mate 20 pro. Only advantages I could think of are spen (but I don't really use it) and headphone jack (I haven't touched it in any phone in the last 3 years since I use strictly BT only, Fc me, right?)
So, am I missing anything that would make the Note 9 superior or that I would miss if I switch to the Mate 20 pro? Or do you think this is absolutely the best phone of 2018?
EDIT: it also has IR blaster and remote control app, missed this since Note 4 lol!
Hi
Your post is really interesting.. I think you used 3 of the most important smartphone based on Android OS.
Sincerely.. Actually I have in my hand the Samsung galaxy note 8...i bought it before buy for my job an iPad with the apple pencil.. After that.. I forgot to use the spen.. Personally.. Too little the screen to be used, for example, to take note during a meeting... This is my personal feedback.
So, for this reason I'm not sure to replace now my note with the note 9.. The most important feature, the S pen, is only an option for me... S9 plus? Yes.. But some hardware parts are already, older than a note 9 hardware set...
Also, after 8 years with only Samsung devices I want try something of different.. And now I think that with this mate 20 pro, maybe I found what I need... High performance, wireless charge, amazing camera, pc mode (maybe can be a interesting features if can be used without any extra hardware such Samsung dex, but also the note 9 now can be used without it).. Nice design...
So, actually I think this will be my next smartphone... I'm. 90% sure...

I haven't pulled the trigger yet but I am 90% sure as well, only thing I just found out I'd miss that I first thought I wouldn't is always on display. Mate 20 Pro has it but it is just the clock and battery, no third party notifications. So if it doesn't show notification I think I'll just turn off AOD to save battery, however, if it doesn't have the RGB LED either, I think I'd miss something to check notifications at a glance

Yes is true but also in this case for my opinion it depend of the normal use of everyone's...
For a example.. Personally I deactivate on my note 8 the always on function because I use for my job and personal use the smartphone really every moment, and switch on the screen to check he notification, is not a problem for me..
The battery life is another important point for me... As I explained before, I abuse of my smartphone usually.. Mail.. WhatsApp, web surfing and a lot of special application such autocad, notes... The only apps that I don't use are the games...
Anyway, I noticed that after some months Samsung device became to have a battery drain.. In some case I solved using avast antivirus app, because his app kill some background process, that wasn't not stopped using the software integrated in Samsung device.
I know that now we have a bigger batteryin both devices, but I want try another company and check if the battery drain can be not a problem anymore.. Also.. I want try the ai support of huawei that promise to solve the problem of the bad performance after day after day...

Same here man, my pixel 2 xl aod is brilliant, and dunno how i will cope with mate 20 pro aod... Like why is soo hard for them to implement this? Still i pulled the trigger and pre ordered it, will keep pixel for a week after just in csse and see if get get used to it not seeing notifications on the aod...
For me is an absolutely yes to your question I never had anything like this Mate 20 Pro it is even better than P20 Pro! Wireless charging, amazing screen amazing battery life fast graphics and processor its all full of future proof! And aesthetically is gorgeous!
The phone seems to be gorgeous, but EMUI is horrible...
No 3rd party notifications for AOD and no expandable lockscreen notifications (no whatsapp quick reply or mail delete)

Feel the same, gorgeous hardware and not so gorgeous software. Had the P20 Pro and loved everything but the software. Will at least try the Mate 20 Pro and see if it is a keeper or not

I also tried the P20 Pro and gave it back because of that damn EMUI... I hoped that they would fix the expandable LS and AOD but nothing happened. That's why I won't buy any phone from Huawei.
Seems like Huawei does not think that these are bugs....
What do they think are the advantages of taking these features out? I don't get it
So as an update to my first post, here's a few more cons of the Mate 20 Pro (some only apply in the US)
*Everyone seems to dislike EMUI
*Problems with third party lunchers
*Worse signal in the US, no wifi calling and no LTE bands 66 and 71 (T-Mobile)
*Pissible spying
*When using the hiding notch option the screen does look noticeable smaller vs Note 9 (picture attached) I'm not sure if the downgrade in display size would bother me
In this thread everyone seems to be against the Mate 20 pro (vs Note 9)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-9/how-to/note-9-vs-huawei-mate-20-t3855360
Damn, I'm sill laying to the side of getting the 20 Pro but this just made the decision harder
Today I tested Mate 20 Pro:
- High quality hardwares: very good build quality, Oled screen look better than Note 9 ( better white balance, higher brightness ) ...
- Seem very good battery life, better than Note 9 and Xs Max
- I don't like EMIUI too: not really modern ( clean and clear ), some micro stutter lags
- Portrait Backlighting: bad quality compare to Note 9 especially compare yo Xs Max

Awesome thank you so much for the feedback! I was really concerned about screen colors and brightness feeling as a downgrade from Note 9
Would you say the micro stutters are worse than in Note 9? It always drop frames when opening recent apps menu, switching apps, unlocking animation, adjusting split screen, operating split screen both apps start to lag, opening swiftkey keyboard, especially on google translate app I'm not sure why but it lags really bad (relatively for a $1000+ phone) like 4-5 seconds to open swiftkey keyboard after tapping on text box. I know EMUI is no OxygenOS but I was hoping at least some improvement from Note 9. Just as Note 9 is not perfect but improvement from Note is very welcome.

You have the BOE display, right? I am really really reaaaally dissapointed with the LG display, it's almost a deal breaker I am still thinking about it depends if I find enough workarounds for other problems.
What i like about the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is:
The design
The screen
The performance
The battery life
The face unlock
The onscreen fingerprint reader
The camera
Emui is alright.
Huawei could do better with:
Faster updates. (I'm on 108 and other people are on 122 and even 128? firmwares). More customization options such as custom font, making the notification screen black and or transparent (same with quick settings, it's black but no transparent), removing certain statusbar icons. Giving us the option to completely remove all bloatware that can be installed trough the Google Play Store.

Colours are dull

Anyone know how to increase the saturation of the display? The display looks quite dull compared to oneplus 6, galaxy s9 and iPhone x. Had them all side by side. I'm always finding I have to increase the saturation of photos too after taking them to match the colours in scene cause they are clearly muted. If you transfer the unedited photos taken on the mate 20 pro to another phone or computer, they look fine. So glad it's not the camera, just seems to be the display having poor vibrancy. And yes my display is set on vivid in settings.
Would like to know if others have noticed this as I checked out another mate 20 pro on display in a shop and seemed to have the same problem
Try settings - display - colour and eye comfort
I don't find them dull myself but a change in settings could help.
Yeah is on vivid in settings ?
Even my pixel 2 XL looks much more vibrant! It's lovely to pick up and use after the M20Pro. I have BOE screen

Interesting, seems to be some major inconsistencies then with this phone. Samsung phones I find over saturated so I can only imagine. I have a green LG screen atm and didn't want to switch to a boe cause I heard the LG display was more vivid than the BOE and I'm finding the saturation on my LG display already so poor so couldnt imagine what it would be like on a BOE screen.
The screen is fine. Seems people are just opening threads now to make baseless accusations against the phone because it's so much better than the competition.
I have Pixel 3 and Mate 20 pro, and just sold my Note 9 and while the whites aren't as blinding as the Note 9 , the saturation is just fine. The Pixel 3 on adaptive is too saturated and the photos from the camera are just fine.
Bringing up the saturation in the camera photos to match the scene? please.
I would advise the op to sell it and get a Pixel.

Minimum brightness

You don't want to give your significant other yet another reason to yell at you while you're reading XDA in bed. Rate this thread to express what you think of the Realme X2 Pro's display minimum dimness. A higher rating indicates that the display can get extremely dim, ideal for reading in very dark environments.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I heard from two people at least there's a problem with this phone that it has visible greenish tint on lowest brightness. Is that true. They said it's a widespread problem...

Confirmed. Sent mine back for this reason.
I can confirm this is a problem when display is low brightness. But if Flicker-Free mode is turned on the tint disappears completely. And the colours change just a little bit (only when display is low brightness), and not in a bad way. It makes white more natural. I will keep it.
It's an issue due to how amoled display's lower the brightness

Let me correct, other 60Hz amoled do not have this issue.
Rest all high refresh rate have this viz.
Merci beaucoup !
good minimum brightness
It looks like the minimum brightness is on the same level with my old Moto G4+, which seems to have a minimum brightness of 25 cd/m².
But I can confirm a greenish tint (but I think it's not only in low brightness but in all brightness levels, just less visible with higher brightness). It doesn't make a difference if I activate DC-Dimming ("flicker free low brightness" or so) or not. And it's also visible in cold as well as in warm display color temperature. I use 90 Hz.

Yes they do... I've personally seen it on 1x S10, 2x S10 plus, 2x note 10 plus, 1x X2 pro, 1x op7t and recently on the galaxy tab 6. I've also seen people say they have it on mi9t pro and iPhone X.
Edit: Believe me this is a wide spread issue among Samsung oleds... I'm not saying every single person has the issue... But I definitely think most do but don't notice or don't know what to look for. There's no way that it's a minority when I've had 2x S10 plus and the X2 pro and my brother 2x note 10 plus aswell as tab 6 and his partner standard s10 and all have a green tint just to different degrees..
Edit: I'd also like to say it's not limited to region or batch... The first S10 plus I had was from Argos UK, the second from eBay and it was a Hong Kong snap dragon version, my brother's note 10 plus both was eBay, his partner standard s10 was if I remember bought from EE when the S10 range first came out.

So, those who were able to spot green tint, must apply for replacement then.
Well yes if it bothers them enough... Although good look getting a screen without this as my above message it's been on them all... As far as I'm concerned it's probably on most if not all recent Samsung panels... That's not me calling people who say they don't have it a lier... I just don't think they have tested enough... It's slightly different on each panel.
Just to add to this I've seen a mi9t pro tonight with the green tint.

You probably saw it on someones Mi 9T Pro who overclocked screen to 81Hz or 90Hz because on default 60Hz Mi 9T Pro have perfect display. You also said that you saw it on 1x S10, 2x S10 plus, 2x note 10 plus, 1x X2 pro, 1x op7t. Well guess what, I also saw that phones and they have perfect display.
Don't talk bad things about other phones if you have issues on your phone.
X2 Pro is really great phone but most of them have some issues with display because Realme had to cut somewhere to give phone with this specs for very low price so they ordered lowest quality amoled from Samsung.

Don't tell me what I saw or didn't or make out I'm talking rubbish.. the s10 is my brother's partner... The 2 note 10s plus was my brother and the 2x S10 plus was mine... The mi9t pro is also my brother's and he only received it yesterday no screen overclock.
Little update regarding the mi9t pro... My brother got the phone replaced due to heating issues... The new one has less green hue over grey but is still there but this time grey is not uniform and lighter or darker on certain areas and this gets worse when brightness is lower.
This comment is pure speculation.
"Realme had to cut somewhere to give phone with this specs for very low price so they ordered lowest quality amoled from Samsung."
I've attached a photo of my brother's first note 10 plus and I'll have a look later if I can find anymore... He actually posted this on Sam community.

I've attached a good image for others to test... Download the image and double tap in the gallery to expand to full screen... Slowly adjust your brightness while checking the image... This on mine is hard to see any issues unless in a full dark room with no light.
