Possible to remote access another android phone? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey. I am finally dragging my elderly mother into the smartphone generation as she lives a good few hours away and wants to be able to see the grandkids more. So I am getting her her first smartphone for video calling etc. It will be a big learning curve for her (she's 79) but she is adamant she wants to try so.......
Is there an app or way that I can access her phone remotely to help her with the things she will initially struggle with. From opening photo apps to adding contacts etc it would be a godsend for me to help her directly. I know there are softwares for pcs but wondered if this was an easy/possible thing to do?
For what it's worth I have the p20 pro and she will have my old Galaxy s7 edge.
Thanks

[Q] How can I remotely control the 10.1 Tab

I have just bought one for my dad, who needs my help quite frequently for basic functions. Is there an app out there, that I can use to see and control his screen. The only simple one I have come across is webkey, but that will only work for rooted tabs. Being remote, it is going to be a real challenge to root this, so just curious if anyone can point me to a good app for remotely managing the app. Thanks a lot.

Did you found a solution? I would like to do that also,
Log Me In Rescue supports Android
secure.logmeinrescue.com/HelpDesk/Home.aspx
could you not just use vnc server?
Teamspeak also works.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
computer + old person = tech support.
I don't have a good solution to your problem (and I doubt there is one that would allow you to do this without your father first starting up a program each time he needs your help, which might require it's own tech support solution). Can I suggest that you take the GT10 back (unless you already have one, keep if for yourself!) and get him an ipad?
Before you jump on me and call me names, I just want to point out that the ipad does everything your father wants (probably) with the added benefit that tech support is always: "hit the button." My mom was about to buy an android phone, but when I realized that she A) doesn't need it; B) won't use any of the advanced functions; and C) I'd probably be doing daily tech support only to find out that she still writes down all her phone numbers into a paper book. I told her to get an iphone, and I'm very happy with that decision. She still doesn't know how to use it, and could probably have just stuck with the motorola razr v9 for her purposes, but she likes that she's "modern" and the novelty of looking something up while she's out hasn't yet worn off.
Don't get me wrong; I think that android is a far more capable system. For me, I'd choose an android tab over an ipad any day. But for mom, it was an easy choice. Only 2 days of calls, and she figured out that the solution was always to "hit the button." Phew.

You can't remote control any android device. My company, not me, was attempting to create an app to allow them to perform remote tech support and setups for android devices but they ran into so many legal issues from all the developers and OEMs that create their flavor of Android. You can remote control computers but you can't remote control android.

Android switching guide from iOS?

Hi guys, new here so wanted to say Hi
Anywho, I'm currently on my last iPhone for now - the iPhone 4S and looking at a change. So far the S4 hits my sweet spot and will be the phone I am getting. What I want to know is what features sort of migrate, so to speak, when coming to the Android platform?
What I mean by this is, what features will enable me to do the same that I had with the iPhone i.e iCloud syncing for storing contacts etc. What I will point out is, I have used an Android device but at more beginner level with no real understanding of anything there. I kinda had a horrible time with the S2 things like Apps crashing, the device randomly rebooting, poor Wi-Fi signal etc. so you could probably say I didn't have the smoothest experience with Android.
Another question I would liek to ask is would 750MB be sufficient? The reason i ask is that this is really the only thing I can get with my contract unless I want to pay £30 - £40 for 1GB - Unlimited.
Thanks.

Hi,
Look HERE
Yes,Google stores all your contacts in the clouds.
Google "IOS to Android",and you will find a ton of stuff to help you switch.
Does 750MB do you know?
It will not use much more on Android.
You can always switch stuff off that may use extra internet.
Only you will know if that is enough.

[Q] Gear S Standalone Email Widget?

Does anyone know where I can find a standalone email .wgt (I don't want to connect to my phone... it's apple... don't kill me)?
Also, an android launcher .wgt like nova launcher would be really cool! (I don't care about battery life if I'm running this)
The main reason my wife bought me this watch was so I could be sneaky and check my emails while I'm in meetings... that way I'd have more time to spend with her at home rather than answering emails until 8pm... I'm pretty much screwed either way, but my inner geek wants to make this work, and I don't like Samsung limiting what my property can do.
This watch can be a completely stand alone device, but Samsung has crippled it's capabilities in an attempt to force us to buy one of their smartphones. I'm not a big fan of these marketing tactics, and have made it my mission to make this watch do what I want it to do, and know it can do. I will not buy a Samsung phone just so I can play with my watch.
I'm a complete noob at this, but thanks to this forum, I've been able to learn quickly. I've been able to root the watch and sideload all of the apps i can find (and think are useful).
I still don't have access to download registered apps, since I didn't cave in and buy a samsung phone. I'm sure there are a lot of good apps that help increase the functionality of the watch.
I'm hoping there are some geniuses out there who could help me out with the email and android launcher questions.
Email/apps
I'm in the same boat as you are. Not spending the extra cash on an additional phone has left much to be desired with the watch. Being a standalone device I thought I would have at least been able to get emails, so a new app is much needed.
Btw I did several searches but could find how to Sideload apps onto the gear s...do you happen to have a link? What apps were you able to find, and can you post them? Thanks, like you I'm very new but willing to help in any way I can.
Now if we can figure out the pit file/ full android I'd be set!
Thanks again!

I just bought a cheapo compatible sammy.
Buy a used galaxy running 4.3 (s3 mini on ebay, used ~$50-70) and use it as a relay. Just copy all the apps and mail accounts from your daily driver onto the S3, connect to Wi-Fi, set the notifications, disconnect from Bluetooth, and use the remote as the tether.

Hopefully someone will come up with a standalone_email.wgt soon.
Right now I'm looking into the feasibility of flashing an Android ROM onto my Gear S.... if that's even possible. Given the limited apps available for Tizen, and all of the built in mess that samsung has provided with this phone, I'm thinking that is the way to go. But, I'm a noob, so haven't had a chance to work with ODIN too much on the ROM flashing side of things.
this is by far the best guide on sideloading apps for Gear S (for your average noob like me):
denvycom.com/blog/how-to-install-wgt-files-gear2
A few wrinkles they don't go over:
Make sure your Java is up to date. If it isn't, Tizen won't install. However, more problematic for me, was getting the developer.samsung.com website to work correctly with my default browser. I uninstalled it and re installed it (and all versions between 6 and 8) quite a few times. If you have the same problems and the website isn't loading java correctly, it's going to be virtually impossible to get your author cert or device profile licenses. I hope you don't run into this problem.
Once you get all of that working, you can scour the Gear S and Gear 2 forums for .wgt files (these .wgt are the "application" files that Tizen uses). There are a lot here on this forum. just download them, copy them to the SDB folder, open up your CMD prompt, find sdb foler, type sdb install xxx.wgt, the press enter.
I'm still not happy with what I've been able to find, pretty much the only .wgt files I've found that are nice are opera mini and a few calculators. Opera mini can't even load flash, so kiss listening to Pandora over your Bluetooth headphones while running.
which brings up another good app request... if anybody is listening... a pandora.wgt would be really really cool!!
Hope this helps

That's called "getting tricked by the biz"! It's like buying a $50 t-shirt! At least you can wear the t-shirt
Sorry man, not trying to be negative, I know it would be easier to do it this way. The fact that they're making me buy one of their phones to make my watch work makes me want to buy a Samsung even less!

Not saying I don't disagree with you. It's a real BS game these guys play! These two devices are the first and only Sam tech I have, and never found their forced ecosystem tactics tasteful. In the end, i REALLY did try to find a possible alternative...From LG to Umeox to ZGPAX. I struggled with an Omate TS for almost a year...to get what the S does out of box (w/compatible Sam, or course) and more.
For me...i needed a reliable device...function beat out emotion and personal feelings in this case.

Thanks for the advice...hopefully I can get to installing some later today. After purchasing the gear and soon learning all its limitations I went to Walmart and purchased a prepaid Samsung phone for the first time pairing before returning the phone. While I managed to get a few apps I quickly found out that most are useless without a paired device.
I do have opera install but found after rooting the gear the app opens to a black screen and that's all.
Long story short, until a new rom is created I'm pretty much stuck with a phone and messaging device (which is nice and all...but not for the price we paid)
Thanks again for all the info!

Hi there!
I am in the same boat as you. iPhone 6 is my primary phone but i also have a twin SIM card that i want to use with the Gear S (standalone). However i still need a (cheap as it can get) Samsung phone for setting up the watch, installing apps and the remote connection.
Can you please confirm that the S3 mini is indeed compatible with the Gear S; What version of Android does it have? Can you post the exact FW name? I was not sure it supported BT 4.0 hardwarewise.
Thank you so much!

Ah, this is a great one. Did this for a friend a few weeks ago...an iPhone 6 playing nice with a Samsung! (Think I heard something about Hell and freezing on this subject But all kidding aside, she does get a lot of comments about the phone/watch combo.
To be honest, I think there's a lot more phones that are compatible with the S that Sammy is letting on. At our Main OFFICIAL AT&T store...their little tablets show maybe 7 or so Samsung models that are "officially" compatible. However, I've heard, and read of some folks trying cheap, simple pre-paid models...and all is working.
After doing some quick research, it seems that it's more important to have Android 4.3 or higher to ensure full functionality. It's the additional Gear Mgr software that will handle the S's functions... And their 4.3+/TouchWiz combo seems to be the key.
Hope this helps... Good luck!
Oh, and BTW, I don't have an iPhone... I do have an android based phone, the HTC One M8. I just have never cared for TouchWiz, nor Samsung's designs.
(Please no OEM wars, just stating my personal opinion)

Cheap Android Tablet for children

Hi Guys
apologies if this has already been answered i did search and found a few pots but they didn't give me all the information i was hoping for or match my criteria exactly.
Ok so i have a 3 year old son,
his hand to eye coordination is coming along and ever since he's been able to unlock his mothers ipad we cant get him off it.
i have no problem with him using the technology at such a young age in moderation and im sure it can be quite educational with the right apps etc.
however using his mothers ipad is not ideal, its totally open he could accidentally press anything from in app purchases or anything that is available on the internet which is a scary thing.
we came to the conclusion that he needs his own tablet, that we can load with selected app's and he can play etc.
i looked at the tablets designed specifically for kids like the vtech's leapfrogs etc but im not exactly sure they will be the best way forward because they wont really grow with him yes they are probably great for a certain age range but as he gets older it will loose its usefulness.
i need something that's going to be pretty much a disposable price (£30/£60) lets be frank this is probably going to be destroyed on several occasions.
so i want want an android tablet the bigger size the better. I need it to be able to root the device as i want to take advantage fully of titanium back and restore direct to a replacement device if needed.
needs to be able to run sort of childrens apps available i know the can be a broad spectrum but lets just say the average ones (processor / memory consumption wise)
i have seen lots of different softwares to lock the os down, so only use certain apps etc but any other suggestions would be great. or anyone who has made something similar.
cheers guys

GALAXY S4 (MODEL SCH-I545) need expert help with abnormal factory reset

I bought a used Verizon Samsung galaxy s4 (model sch-i545) online a few weeks ago from ebay for $119.99 and just received it this morning and when i booted it up it won't let me past this Samsung account screen. I created a Samsung account on my PC and registered the galaxy s4 product with the IMEI and I still can't get past this Samsung account screen to set up my new phone, I've tried literally everything for 5 straight hours now with no success. Please I beg you to find it in your heart to guide me past this issue,I have no clue whatsoever what to do,my s3 I had thru Verizon never had this screen on it. I've been working on this issue for 9 straight hours now and the seller refused to either remove his account from it so I can use the phone or even allow me to just do it for him to get this nightmare over with, its not like I want or have a hidden agenda for his petty insignificant login info,I just want to login with the info than clear his info off it and sync it to my account that's all. I have done absolutely everything that's even remotely possible for an amateur tech enthusiast who's learning by trial and error and I am now down to just two hopefully promising tricks left up my sleeve at the moment. I have an android app called DEVELOPMENT SETTINGS (download the apk to another phone then connect both phones together using an otg cord and run the program, it actually works on the host phone so im hopeful)that on its own supposedly opens up the phones settings for me but I unfortunately gave away my only otg cord to a friend 6 months ago so I'm screwed on that option apparently. And my final option is to just have my app developer/Linux code writer/programmer acquaintance guy give it a shot with all his professional programs and whatnot that the general public doesn't typically have access to without cash, credentials, and a college education. Please email me at Mod edit: Email address removed if anyone can please find it in your heart to help an up and coming fellow tech lover out with ur proud vast intellectual prowess and undeniable utmost respectable expertise that ur proud to possess! SHOW ME AND ALL OUR OTHER FELLOW XDA MEMBERS WHO THE REAL TRIED AND TRUE TECH GENIUS IS BY ACCOMPLISHING WHAT ABSOLUTELY NOBODY HAS SO FAR BY FIGURING OUT A BADASS BYPASS FOR THIS INCREDIBLY CHALLENGING CONUNDRUM!!!!!
Please re-write the op if you want anyone to actually help you. Keep it short and to the point and try to use photos. Describe your phone and problem as much as possible while cutting out anything that won't help people understand your situation.(I didn't post this to offend you, just to help you)
