Freezing, reboot and get stuck, sticky screen loading on Qualcomm RN4 - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

For a week or two now,* I have been having some funny things happen with my Redmi Note 4 (Qualcomm, Global) phone.
Before that it had gotten water in it and basically shut down entirely, but they fixed it and got it up and running. When I picked it up they showed me watermarks on the screen, saying that the screen had frozen only once but that it may just be lagging.
Since then I have had a few symptoms of an issues, perhaps hardware issues, but potentially something that I can fix without paying more for parts.
Here are the things that happen:
- Music stops suddenly (screen on or off) and the music app has to be reopened (DoubleTwist, Miuiu's Music app, etc); Somes while in Doubletwist, if I click to visit home screen (square button) than the music stops. (this is the first issue that I noticed).
- 1-2 seconds of white screen before already-open apps appear after selected; Sometimes problems with apps loading or screen goes black when loading
- When closing apps or returning to home screen, it looks like the desktop(?) background comes up and then a second after is is re-populated with icons as if system is refreshing the home screen
- Once any of these issues begins, it usually worsens and the cell phone gets slower, behaving more and more strangely until not even useful to me; Reboot clears it right up for an hour or two or whenever this wierd stuff starts to happen again
-It seems like if I make a point of using the phone modestly, slowly, I can avoid these issues from starting up
- Sometimes reboot rometimes hangs on initial black loading screen
- Sometimes if I hit the power button to turn off the display, I can not turn it back on with that button (neither does the battery-dead orange light flash), so I have to reboot.
-When I turn the phone screen off while it has been working fine, I come back later, turn on the screen to find that it is now on the boot logo screen and it stays until I hard-reset the phone.
So, these are potential issues I have guessed at:
* Screen damaged? So far, other than watermarking at the top and some backlight bleed, sensistivity is perfect on the phone, and symptoms involving screen always seem to be triggered more by apps or pressing buttons.
* Apps or Android corrupted/internal memory damaged? I backed up via Settings and did a Hard/Factory Reset, then restored from backup. I still have the problems.
* RAM partially damaged? I test RAM with two apps and none of them showed issues. Namely my available RAM and used RAM reported always add up to the 4GB my phone has.
*Other Hardware Components failing? I used 3 apps to check all of the hardware devices and sensors that I could think of. Vibration is the only thing that does not work, and honestly, I don't care much about vibration.
Today I have suspected that settings may being at fault, and/or battery savers turning off my audio. Battery savers often identify my music apps as using "excessive amounts of power," perhaps because the speakers at involved, but it does make me think... I removed any battery-related and security apps, then turned off all battery saver options in settings earlier today. In 2 hours of music listening after that, I have not had any shutdowns, but I am not convinced I have solved the problems. In the weeks after this, the issue is back and the audio issue is always followed by the phone operating very sluggishly.
I have done a factory reset and restore, and the issue persists. Do you think there's any point in trying to do a clean reflashing of MIUI? Could it be a software issue or definitely hardware?
What advice can you give me?
Thank you for reading.

You can try booting in safe mode and then check if the problems still persist. Other than that, I suggest you to get advice from senior members of the forum.

Miui 9 does not have safe mode to boot in.

[Q] Low battery - touch screen not respond

Hello guys, I just noticed strange bug/behaviour. If my battery is around 10%, touch screen is not respondig as it should (also touch buttons). I have to tap like 10 times on some tile to open it and then tap another 10 times on back button or home button to jump of from app. As soon as I connected the charger, phone is behave normal, like new
Does somebody else notice the same behaviour or its just me?
P.S. Tried to reboot phone twice. Battery saver was off.

Can you check under settings -> applications -> Background tasks?
It more looks like plenty of apps are trying to sync up or use the resources. I might be wrong, but this did happen to me even at about 55% battery. But not as bad as 10 taps. I just felt the app launching was a lil slower than normal when I had ample background tasks.
Didn't know about "Background tasks", thanks
Currently I have only "HTC Hub" there. I will go and check this setting next time when I occur this problem.
But anyway, shouldn't reboot kill all background apps?

Reboot surely will kill all background apps. But these background apps are different to other OS. They are those that will 'start on boot'. So after reboot just in few seconds, they will get to their business as usual.
I love this 'background' task feature! No other OS does it so efficiently as Windows.
The good thing is if you check that place often, you will know what apps are 'going to run'. It doesn't mean they are running all the time. It tends to indicate the capability of them to run.
So as you said you just have HTC Hub, which is same on mine. However, when you to go 'advanced' option on that same page, you will see a list of greyed out apps that are going to run in background and you can't kill them. Reason being these apps need to be told about not running in background by entering them individually.
See if that greyed out list has some huge apps. I downloaded this gMaps thing from market and although I just looked for maps once (a day ago) since then, it's been running. It's because it kept on looking for my GPS co-ordinates. Now that dint freeze my phone (1.5 Ghz, I know!) but it drained battery quicker. Changing attributes within the app, removed it from greyed list and happy days!
In a nutshell, very intelligent task management. You can choose what can run and can't run while your screen is off! + you get benefit of battery saver option if you use that so you can choose who can connect to 3g network and who can't while you are not looking at your screen!
PS: whole point of that long post was : Most likely it's not a background task that's hogging your processor, but it's worth looking under advanced and you might know what app was it.
Hey, that was a long post Thanks for clarifying. I just checked Advanced tab and there are only HTC hub and some Media something (I have it in Czech so don't know the exact name in english)
Anyway I will keep my eye on that menu and in case of any issue I will check it and we will see
OK guys, here is the update. It's still happening :/ Everytime battery drops under 10% phone cannot be almost used. I have to tap everything 10 times to get it done. Checking background task was not helpfull, only HTC Hub is running (even if I kill it its the same).
So...I don't know...maybe its a bug (some power-saving feature thats is not configured properly?). I was used to behaviour when my mobile works even with no battery left like fully charged. No change in behaviour...

As a last resort - try a hard reset. I've got many issues fixed that way.
However, can I ask how closer to the release did you get this phone? Here in the UK there seems to be two separate batches dispatched. One which was at the release - which is buggy batch. I got my new phone sorted from someone I knew at the store and so far not a single problem from the earlier handset is seen. Battery is drastically better too (it was better on earlier one already, but this is very pleasing!)
Try hard reset, if that doesn't solve it, I would recommend to swap it if you can.
Hello everyone,
I am facing the exact same issue on my HTC Titan - when battery is low (battery saver turns on), touchscreen becomes unresponsive. This is very annoying since it usually happens when i get an incoming call and i cannot answer it.
Did anybody try hard-resetting the phone in order to solve this issue?
Thanks for the answers!
Regards
Hello there... I have the same problems too. I don't try to do hard rest for my titan. It is very annoying for me. Also some time my touchscreen becomes unresponsive even the battery charging is more than 50%...
Yeah, I get this issue too, it makes the phone unusable until you get to a charger. I find that it comes in stages, it sometimes is really bad then works for a few seconds, then stops again.
I have checked all my background tasks and nothing is really running.
I have this issue too. I got this phone only yesterday, and when my battery reached 10%, touchscreen became unresponsible.
Guys I think I've mentioned this in the FAQs thread, but ..
Everyone with this issue - please tick the box under battery saver, where it says 'automatically start.... '
If you phone goes below 25% without battery saver ON, it will lag/freeze - the screen response.
However with battery saver on, you will be able to use it till you go below 5% or even 3% when it gives you the 'critical battery' warning.
This is HTC screwing with us!
mine has the completely opposite problem!! when the phone is charging, the screen becomes very unusable, in ex. i press the phone tile, the screen registers my tap, but it understands that i pressed the tile below or next to the one i really pressed. or i happen to scroll down or up, the phone hesitates for a second and then scrolls but it is very jumpy and jittery, unlike normal use. some times it doesn't even register my taps 2 or maybe 3 times in a row!!
the only workaround i've found is not to use the phone when charging
is this happening because of a faulty charger, maybe the phone is experiencing a short circuiting situation??
(i forgot to mention that i have the phone only for a week!!)
thanks

I have battery saver enabled and even with the heart icon in the info bar at the top, the screen is still unresponsive.
Same here! i thought it was just my device that was dead or something, even since it's only 2 months old!
I did a hard reset and it solved the problem, it must have been something messing it up.
Nope...I have tried Hard Rests...ROM Changes etc...but its still the same problem..
Does anyone here think its a hardware problem ? or something else?
Any geek suggestion would be helpful
Send it back to htc, let them repair it?

Hi, I also have a problem with non-responsive screens but only in specific areas and doesn't have to be 10% percent or lower.
Ex: It happens only when the keyboard is up and the buttons on the bottom are very difficult to press!
I'll provide pictures soon

That happened to me today. Then I did a hard reset and now my phone won't go past the carrier logo (the one after the HTC logo, and before the windows Phone logo)

Here's how to reproduce home screen flickering

For those who are still getting home screen flickering after .14 update and thinking it's a random thing, here's how to reproduce the problem regardless of docking or performance mode:
1. Go to the home screen (you should have a decent amount of apps, widgets and folders on it).
2. Bring up something that overlays the home screen. This includes:
a. Recent Apps on the left
b. ASUS (or Android) Quick Setting on the lower right
c. Mouse cursor (arrow or circle)
(Opened folders don't seem to trigger the problem.)
3. Keep the overlay on the screen and wait. Within 10 seconds you should see a big black triangle on the lower left of the screen flickering. It takes longer for the flickering to appear for the first time, but afterwards you almost always see it after a few seconds.
4. Once the overlay is gone (for the mouse cursor, just wait about 10 seconds and the cursor will disappear automatically), the flickering will not occur regardless of how long you wait!
Hopefully this issue can be addressed in the next update!! It's starting to annoy me.
P.S. The home screen will also show some very occasional black or white horizontal lines flickering. Now I think this one is truly random. Usually you need to stare at the screen for a long time to see it.
** UPDATE **
As I've mentioned in the reply, I've discovered that having News and Weather widget in the screen on either side of the center Home Screen (but not on the center screen itself) will increase the chance of reproducibility. Also, having a lot of widgets and apps on the home screen will also do it. Having more than 7 or 8 apps in Recent Apps will definitely do it.
I have the triangle thing too but only if I have a couple of apps (enough that I can scroll the list) open.
I can't recreate it but I have seen it before
You also get some 'flickering' when you have SD card mounted and some other app is updating an ongoing notification.
It seems to forget it's place and the ordering of the notifications jump around.
Same Bug here...
i can recreate it using texttab and pressing any overlay item. its irritating
I get this bug as well in .14. I don't remember seeing it in previous ICS builds (.11 or .13), but I wasn't exactly looking for it either.
I used to get this just when it was charging in the dock... now its worse.
I've found that swiping away a few apps from the recent item overlay fixes things for me whenever it happens. It's annoying though
Yes I had this issue as well but I did a Factory Reset and re-installed my apps last night and cannot reproduce this problem now. Anyone else?
I've had this bug in every build except the current one. Seems gone for me. Only problem I've (luckily) seen with my Prime.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
Before upgrading to ICS I didn't see the screen flicker at all, but now that I've upgraded I see it all the time when I use a live wallpaper
Mine occurs with use youtube & thumb keyboard
Open youtube app, quickly in the search bar, and as the keyboard and the video loads in the background it'll flicker
also as you type

Yes I finally gave in and did a complete data wipe. Initially the problem went away as expected (because the Home screens were mostly empty after the factory reset). After all the apps and Home screen states were restored, the problem came back as before, completely reproducible.
So this got me thinking: perhaps it was one of the widgets, or too many widgets/folders/apps on the home screen that's causing this flickering. I finally narrowed down to just one: the stock News and Weather widget. As long as this widget is on either side of the center home screen (but not on the center home screen itself), the flickering will appear, completely reproducible! Since this widget is not really functioning properly under ICS (no setup screen) so no lost there.
Oh, and that more-than-7-or-8-apps-in-Recent-Apps thing will also produce flickering regardless of anything, but only when you first open it up. Otherwise it works the same as other overlays if other conditions are met.
Now I have to go restore about 20GB of stuff. Factor reset wiped it all clean. The thing is, I could've figured all this out without the factory reset. Oh well.
OP has been updated.

The News and Weather made no difference for me, but the number of items in Recent Apps did. Swiping items out of the list made the triangle flicker disappear from the home screen and from within other apps.
This bug only popped up for me once the jitter came back for me - any and all overlays (including the bottom bar, notification popup, and a couple monitoring apps) constantly move up and down a few pixels. I can't capture on my cell phone because the frame rate is apparently in sync, but this video from another poster here shows it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIO2LBMG-dc&feature=youtube_gdata_player
I really hope Gary and Asus will address this issue shortly.
I sometimes have a flickering and screen freeze during games like Reckless Racing 2 or some other too. A workaround is to go back to homescreen then and close the app where it happened.
Not sure if it's the same problem you guys are talking about.
Got still the 9.4.2.11 build here in germany. This never happened to me in the last weeks, but since 2 or 3 days I got it a few times while running games (without the dock).
The .14 update has greatly reduced this issue for me, but there is still a very brief flicker when showing the recent apps menu if there are a lot of apps in it
same problem
I always had this problem. I did factory reset once and the problem remained. After the .14 update, i still have the problem. Really really really want to have the problem solved..But thank you so much for telling me how to reproduce the problem
can't reproduce it either, but i still experience it once in a while. a minor bug, but still among a long list

[Q] Why the phone freezes when trying to unlock?

I've been experiencing for some time now some random freezes when trying to face-unlock the phone. When pushing the power button to wake the phone, it displays the unlock screen but the box in the screen where your face (or whatever the front camera catches) blacks out, while the rest of the screen is normal (I can see the clock, the notification bar and the emergency call), also the leds for back and menu light up. And the phone justs stays like that, all the leds lighted up and the screen on. The home button doesn't work and the power button only works if I hold it down (it powers down / restarts the phone).
This has happened to my phone from some time ago, its purely random and it always happens when I try to unlock the phone. I haven't had any issues while using the phone nor strange bootloops or sudden reboots. I'm currently on stock XXEMB5 with Speedmod Kernel k2-13 and some apps removed, mainly yahoo widgets and some Samsung apps (I think I just removed all the hubs: game hub, social hub, etc...).
I red the bad eMMs symptoms, but it doesn't seem to be the same. If I had to guess, I would say its something with the camera, but right now I don't know for sure... Anyone has any idea where could be the problem?
Favourite culprit would be a non-standard kernel, wipe the phone and return to fully stock to test.
Your collection of mods and custom changes to rom are probably unique, if it doesn't freeze when stock then add changes one at a time until it happens again.

AOKP (?) - Reboot when turning screen on (while Dialer is running?)

In two different AOKP roms (AOCP, PACman), I have a problem where if I'm on a call and forcefully turn the screen off by pressing the power button (as opposed to by the prox sensor or by timeout), the phone reboots. Interesting, if there's audio on the call, it will continue to play as the shutdown animation is playing.
I have the accessibility setting to end calls with the power button turned OFF. I can't think of any other settings which would affect this.
I tried searching on this symptom, but didn't find anyone with this issue. I clean installed both ROMs, but AOKP seems to be a common denominator. Anyone have advice for me?
Does it ever reboot at other times after you've pressed the power button, or is it only while in a call? I recently had a problem where the phone would reboot after I turned it on. I was on CM and went to SHOStock and it still did the same! I figured, hell, after two different ROMs and it still acting the same, maybe it was hardware. Ended up taking the phone apart and there was some gunk around the inside part of the power button keeping it held in too far and triggering the reboot after a few seconds. After removing the button and carefully cleaning it (it's very small), I now no longer have a reboot problem on either CM or SHOStock.

I've only had it happen so far when turning the screen back on during a call. If I don't force the screen off in the first place, the phone will happily turn the screen on and off due to prox sensor. It will also time out and let me turn it back on without the power button with no issue. Because of this, I don't believe it's a mechanical issue. I didn't have this problem until trying AOKP ROMs, the timing is too coincidental.
Based on what I'm seeing with the boot animation, it isn't a full reboot (I don't see the SGS II logo, for example). I didn't even know that rebooting only the OS was possible.
I assume there are logs I can check to help figure out what's going on, but I don't know where to find them.
I found a string of posts in the Carbon thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46998058&highlight=just+carbon+reboots#post47133798. Same symptom, but different trigger. I tried, I can rotate the camera just fine. I'm currently running the 10/31 nightly of PACman, guess I'll update past 11/2 later today and see what happens.
11/6 was a bust (lots of FCs after a clean install), so now I'm trying 11/10, 11/4, or 11/5.
Initial results with 11/10 show that the problem is fixed; gonna restore my old ROM, go through the TiBu dance, and see what happens when I finish setting up 11/10 completely. Maybe it's something I'm doing.
OK, 11/10 fixed my primary issue. Further, I used to have pretty nasty screen-on lag that I couldn't fix even after messing with the CPU and I/O profiles. Hurray!
Based on my experience this may affect other AOKP based ROMs (like Carbon or AOCP), but it might have been present in pure CM (CyanogenMod) - hard to tell. Hope this helps someone else.
****, it's back. Must be something I'm doing. The quest continues...

Question [Solved] Bootloop noticing after MIUI 14 Update

Firstly I wanted to clarify one thing that my phone worked okay after the update. I didn't realise it has updated until after a boot loop.
Just FYI The camera in my phone have been crashing randomly when taking pics and the pics weren't having the full resolution. It was 1280x720. This wasn't an issue for me and I ignored it for like 3-4 months.
So my redmi note 10 have had some random reboot issues lately which i didn't give much attention to. It wasn't frequent just rare random reboots. Few days back I noticed my phone rebooting while in use and it started to loop for a few times and when it loaded into lockscreen right after unlocking, the power button started to press automatically triggering the power option screen and then the emergency calls as well. It stopped after a few taps on the power button.
A day or two later it rebooted once again while the recorder was on and and this time it boot looped a few times and showed the lockscreen and crashed booting back once again. A few tries after that it booted up and I was able to use it for another day.
The very next day, it did the same. Started to boot and loop once again. But this time when the battery is sufficient enough or the phones cool and haven't been used for a while, it boots into lockscreen but freezes and crashes. At one occasion, it stayed just a few more seconds long enough to open the passcode screen but crashes before I could type anything. Then it loops once again and before even reaching the lockscreen, boots back into MI Android Powered screen right after the three dots blinking page. And randomly it boots into lockscreen as well. But once the battery is down or the phone is heated enough, it barely goes into lockscreen.
Booting into safe mode also shows the same. It sometimes boots into lockscreen but doesn't show the 'safe mode' text in the bottom.
Right now when I had kept my phone off for a while it booted into lockscreen twice and the screen dims immediately before freezing and crashing.
The third time it just went back to the MI Android powered logo right after the three dots blinking screen.
Guys please let me know do you think this is a hardware issue or a corrupt software update?
I know software update issue can cause bootloop but does it reach till the lockscreen? My phone consistently gets into the lockscreen when the battery is sufficient or the phones cool enough.

MIUI 14 which i didn't even realise until I checked the settings app one day after a boot issue
What version do you have?
For me see screenshot, works fine!
Backup your data and clean flash with Mi Flash Tool, you can then exclude any software problem
This issue have been resolved.
The issue was the CPU couldn't handle the heat once the device turned on and would reboot right after reaching the lockscreen and loops.
Thank you for all your suggestions, though.

Hey, my mi 10 5g has similar symptoms - random restarts + random switch on power button without pressing it...
all this came after upgrade from miui 13 to 14..I use this phone for 1,5 yr with no problems...
Phone get hotter also...
Is it related to bug?
