Touch latency in Oreo - LG V30 Questions & Answers

After updating my V30 to Oreo I noticed very quickly that there are a lot more touch latency specifically in the Settings app. It makes the phone feel less responsive. You have to drag the finger several mm before it starts moving when swiping while it was pretty much instant on Nougat. Most horrible is the Play Store app. No one else noticed this? Actually thinking about downgrading to Nougat since this is a pretty big issue for me personally. I want my phone to feel as responsive as possible.

Nope. Don't notice it. I own five V30/V30+, using Nova Launcher.
You took partial image OTA or flashed full KDZ image?
What V30 OTA or KDZ are you using?
Are you using a custom ROM? Or stock firmware? If rooted, did you flash the "no root checker" file?
What launcher are you using?

Took full image OTA to Oreo and did a factory reset afterwards. Launcher doesn't matter since it does not affect that. It's mostly the settings app they have changed the latency of but not all menus etc. I guess some don't notice in the way some don't notice screen issues for examples. But it's there. No root pure stock except Nova.

Downgraded to Nougat and the touch latency is so much better in the settings app. There's this annoying scrolling delay in Oreo. Can't stand that stuff it makes the phone feel cheaper as it's less responsive. the P20 Pro had this too until they fixed it in an update. I dig in the settings quite a bit so it disturbed me. I'll stick with Nougat for now.

Ok, I rooted my fascinate and removed the lag, now what is next?

Hi people, I finished rooting my phone, I guess im rooted because I have an icon in apps called super user, i applied the lag fix, now what do I do next?
Man I guess ur in the same boat as quite a few of us. Sit back realx, wait for clockwork, wait for ROMS, and prepare to have fun when all of the previously mentioned items to start appearing and enjoy having the beat hardware available at this point.

you chill.. till the next episode.
We're close. Hang tight.
Next big thing is the official Froyo update, I guess. This thing is already flying so fast, I can't wait to see how Froyo runs on it. I had installed KaosFroyo on my old Droid Eris, which made it actually functional again, but despite that ARMv6 CPU's (or was it ARMv5?) best effort while overclocked to 710MHz, along with the JIT compiler, it just could offer me the experience I was looking for.
Can't wait to see what people can do with the Fascinate, though at this level of performance, I will probably be less likely to install custom ROMS. Plus, the Fascinate ROM has some very nice bells and whistles, like the WiFi/BT/GPS/Airplane on/off buttons on the notification screen, which you don't get with a plain vanilla ROM. Now, if somebody comes out with a Gingerbread ROM, I just might be interested.
I've actually been quite disappointed with performance on this phone, with the exception of games. I'm coming from an Incredible which is dramatically snappier and generally stutter-free, despite the hardware not being as powerful. With the Fascinate I notice stuttering and lag every few screen changes, which is disappointing. I would say the lock screen stutters/lags 50% of the time, maybe more.
At this point, I'm blaming Samsung's software, so I'll try and wait for custom ROMs to resolve this.

Have you tried switching to LauncherPro? That will give you a good speed boost overall. The lag fix should take care of the rest. I saw the same issues as you, which are all gone after these mods.

Yes, I have been running Launcher Pro Plus from the outset. I am rooted and have applied the lag fix. The Incredible was still MUCH faster. Launcher Pro doesn't fix things like the notification bar or lock screen stuttering, or the soft keys not responding immediately after being pressed.
I am going to attempt to move Launcher Pro Plus into the system folder and remove TW-Launcher as one of the other members did to try and improve speed.
The lag fix actually made my phone run worse..installed it..and it ruins like a dream
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
There is no need to move an app to system just to uninstall another one. I use ADW launcher and have uninstalled TW launcher. Keep in mind, when you do the uninstall you must have your other launcher set to default or bad things will happen. After the uninstall the phone will go into a FC fit. Simply reboot and all will be golden.
After removing TW launcher I haven't seen any lag, and I never applied the "lag fix".
Hope that helps

Yeah I figured that was true, I just wanted to make Launcher Pro even more official by making it a SYSTEM app .
I'm going to give it a shot now. Here's to hoping I won't require an Odin restore of any kind...

NOOO WAY!! The Incredible I had doesn't even compare to the speed I'm getting from my Fascinate! The Incredible I even had Froyo on it!! That thing was crap for me.. Lets not get on the topic of battery life...
The battery life on the Incredible was no good, I will agree with you on that. But, in terms of overall system smoothness (remember, NOT games or multimedia), the Fascinate (along with all of the other Galaxy S phones) doesn't play in the same league as the Incredible yet.
In addition to my personal encounters of sluggishness on 2 Fascinates, 1 Vibrant, 1 Captivate, and 1 Epic 4G, a few of the reviews I read mention this problem as well:
"More than once the phone locked up doing what we considered to be basic tasks, such as switching between apps or back to the homescreen. The Fascinate just seemed to stall out, often at the most inconvenient times, and we were left to simply wait until it sorted out whatever memory or processor issues it seemed to be having. Comparatively, a device like the Incredible rarely if ever stalled out on us, even during heavy use."
Engadget, September 7, 2010
"...That’s not to say Samsung has no room for improvement...we still observed a few of the periodic stalls that mar the overall user experience."
Slash Gear, September 7, 2010
"As much as I like the UI I did find some of the menu pops and screen flips to stutter a bit."
Geek, September 17, 2010
It's not like the phone is "slow", it just stutters and holds in places the Incredible never did, like the lock screen, or pulling down the notification bar, or when long pressing to get menus, even with the lag fix, TWLauncher removed, and no live wallpaper (which are tweaks I have done to ALL US flavors of this phone). Even flipping between home screens on the Incredible is noticeably faster than any Galaxy S when both phones have Launcher Pro installed. I think it's just a question of pickiness when it comes to the smoothness of animations. Again, I have noticed these issues on EVERY Galaxy S phone I have encountered, not a single, possibly defective, phone.
I really, really want this phone to live up to it's fancy hardware through development from the great people around here, which is why I will probably keep it as a sort of investment. Here's to hoping the community around it continues to grow!
My Incredible with Froyo does not compare to the Fascinate with Eclair (no lag fix, TW still present but running LauncherPro Plus).
It's not even close.
Battery life on the Fascinate is phenomenal compared to the Incredible. The only thing I miss on the Incredible is the support (duh, it's been out since April 29) and the optical trackpad (makes editing text much easier).

[Q] Homescreen Lag / Scroll lag

Hi, first of all I love my SGS2, this is my 3rd android phone and I couldn't be happier. This phone is great. BUT... There's one thing that's bugging me. Every rom and kernel I've tried have the same problem. Lag. I'm NOT talking in games or the loading of applications, because this phone FLIES through those tasks. It's small areas where there shouldn't be the smallest amount of lag i.e. scrolling and the homescreen. I hope someone could shed some light on this for me. Everyone talks about how great this phone is and how there's absolutely no lag. Well have you used an iphone. Their like butter. We've got a phone that ****s power and they've got weak hardware in comparison. What gives?
Thanks for reading...
ive noticed if i have the phone plugged into a different charger, ( non oem samsung) there is alot of lag on the phone, its almost impossible to type cause its so annoying! lol its weird cause i thought it was the rom and tried flashing a few roms and it was all the same! found out it was because i was using a htc charger instead of the samsung one. weird cause its the same charging specs and a micro sd cable is all the same!!
Yea I've heard of that. It's indeed weird. I think there is something about it in the manual as well if I remember correctly (yes I read the manual for once!). Any ideas on the home screen/scroll lag?
I'm only on 2.3.3 ROM stock, and it's been great so I don't find the need to flash to other custom ROMS yet
The Touchwiz homescreen for me is buttery smooth. I mean, I've loaded alot of widgets on the thing and it's still smooth
ADW Launcher Ex homescreen scrolling is laggy for me though. No idea why, as the rest of the functions fly (ie app drawer scrolling, app opening, etc)
i also feel there's a tiny lag sometimes... don't know why... btw,i'm using go launcher
I'm also on stock 2.3.3 now and I think I'm going to stay with stocks for a while. I've used different launchers including ADW Launcher Ex and Go launcher Ex but they all have lag at some area. @rantzzz have you used an iphone before? how would you compare the homescreen to our S2. @sept20 can you please look under the battery and see where your phone was made? I.e. mine was made in korea. Thank-you.
Comparing the iPhone homescreen scroll and the Touchwiz 4.0 scroll on SGS2, the iPhone is much much smoother
But the stock Touch wiz 4.0 isn't a slouch also. There is a noticeable fraction of a lag when you swipe, but nothing too big
Thanks for confirming rantzzz. Yeah that fraction of lag when you swype is what I'm talking about. I also experience something similar in my apps drawer. I just can't figure out why Samsung couldn't have optimized something so small and argumentatively most important since it's the portal to everything you do on your phone! Maybe they will fix this in a future update or possibly in ICS.
Well i noticed if i use the 2x4 weather widget i get lag scrolling, shrinking it down and i lost the lag. I dunno if this will help you guys but worth a pop.
I get the lag no matter what, 100 widgets or no widgets. It would be interesting to hear if it helps anybody else though.
OP, Can you give us a full list of all software installed on your device, because I've NEVER seen lag on my phone. I've used TouchWiz, Launcher Pro and have finally settled on Go Launcher, and this phone makes the iPhone 4 looks slow and tedious, so I can only suggest that you have some software that is causing problems.
Edit: Okay, it doesn't make the iPhone 4 look slow. But it is clearly faster and smoother.
A list of software is pointless because I'm experiencing the problem at absolute stock. Whether it is my stock vodafone rom or a stock custom rom. If you wouldn't mind johncmolyneux could you please look under your battery and see where your phone was made? Also what rom and kernel you are using? Thank-you

I have to disagree here, my mate has an iPhone4 and compared to my GS2 it's definitelty not as smooth,my GS2 is much faster too and the display whilst good on both phones is definitely better on mine even my mate (relucantly) admitted that.
Scrollable wallpapers and live wallpapers kill the smoothness. Have a stationary wallpaper that doesn't scroll as you swipe and you'll see how smooth this baby is.
iPhone's launcher seems smoother because it doesn't let you install any wallpaper that'll slow down the homescreen.
I believe it is smooth. My friend (Iphone 4) user actually used my phone and he said that it was smoother and faster than his Ip4. But then again, actually at that time I just purchased it like an hour before. So it was really stock brand new and I have not actually installed anything yet.
I think the word 'lag' is misleading. Lag would actually imply that when you swipe the screen that it takes a moment to react. Do you really have that problem? I do not. The only time I could say I have with lag is the home button reaction speed - which isn't lag, it's because of the voice activation feature.
HOWEVER ...
What I would say is that slowly swiping between screens is far from buttery smooth - I would describe it as slightly juddery. If you swipe fast you barely notice, and if you scroll through the dots it's beautifuly smooth and impressive! BTW I've had 3 different firmwares and casual screen swiping has been equally unsmooth on all..
My question to all is... If you casually/slowly swipe between screens, do you find the animation smooth or a little juddery?

Mine was made in Korea and I'm using stock ROM (XWKE2) that has been rooted.
I've been so happy with stock ROM that I'm not seeing any need to put anything custom on it.
Hope you find the cause of your problem mate, because your phone is definitely not living up to its possibilities! Any chance of a video of your lag?

Launcher pro reminds me of one que I had- when i was using villain rom 1.4 lite, the launcher pro that came preinstalled didn't have any lag, but when I installed launcher pro on villain rom 1.4 (full version), i felt laggy app browser... why is it so? its also true with adw and go launcher... only thing changed now is that villain rom 1.4 days are gone with release of villain rom 2.0...

Lag And Keyboard Lag!

I have the Samsung S6 Edge t-mobile 64gb sapphire and it's been 11 days already . I'm starting to notice some hiccups and lags , between switching apps, tabs and keyboard input lags. It's pretty annoying.
Restart phone..
been doing that since the lag. it's seems there is some underlying culprit. lol. I really don't know...kinda sucks for a brand new expensive smartphone.

It Does LAG!
Your not alone! i experience lag a lot and its annoying considering i payed $1000 for a phone that lags! i do hope there is an update otherwise i will have to go back to iPhone 6 Plus or maybe even wait for 6s Plus!!
I know right?.... I just hate it when the keyboard lags like hell.... been closing applications everytime....so that it will minimize the lag occurrence. kinda sucks.

Everyone with lags...just reflash stock firmware using Kies or smartswitch. My S6 Edge lagged initially. I'm rooted. I'm using the ZiDroid stock recovery. I had wrongly deleted knox files with root explorer making my phone unbootable. I followed the directions of using the kies method *before smartswitch* method and the full on firmware restore killed any lags I initially had. BTW, the Kies method had the OTA update built in.
I'm running stock. not rooted. But with lags.
I agree, I bought the phone because there are so many positive review saying there's literally no lag at all..which is not true
This is TW, and it's TW we all knew, it remind me of my note ii, at least before I flashed it with omniRom
it's lag free initially when no app installed, but after few days of use, stutter just become more obvious
I know i can solve it with phone restart or even factory reset, but that's not how 2015 smart phone should behave, nor justifiable with the price
The TW animation just plane bad compare to stock lollipop, and the stutter just pop out here and there
I'm more than happy to give up all samsung feature in exchange of pure lollipop experience, but unfortunately it's not available yet

May i ask is there a tutorial or youtube link that shows how to reflash stock firmware using Kies or smartswitch?
I may give it a try to refresh my firmware to see if it helps or not
for now, the scroll lag in chrome/play store, delay in pulling down notification and occasional keyboard stutter really annoys me like hell
I have no lag per say the only problems I have is keyboard lag every now and again and redraws. I switched to Nova launcher and get much less redraws. I think that somehow the problem has more to do with lollipop than touchwiz because I had no lag at all on my note 4, until lollipop.
Coming from an HTC One M8 - My phone at times seems slower that this.
Albeit, I do use S Health, Fit bit and some other ram hunger items i guess.
Even when I clean the ram - I still only have less than 10% free!
After having a Note 3 i thougt stepping up to a Note 4 would improve in speed, it didnt, tw was extremely sluggish, lag was laughable with The killerspecs of The Note 4. Flashed a AOSP on my Note 3, fluid as hell! So i sold my new note 4 (0x0 knox), glad i got rid of it!!
Im never gonna buy a Sammy AGAIN, so AGAIN killer specs of The s6 and still lag, its junk!
TW, bloatware, stupid gimmicks are still the big problem!
Be smart, dont go for gimmicks that at first look good, but in reality you never use them..
Buy a Nexus 6, flash a Nice ROM, some mods, decent kernel, enjoy your fluid device!!
(Nexus 6 without contract 450 euro here, half The amount of a 899 s6 edge)
After downloading and installing the google keyboard from the play store, all keyboard lag I had experienced is gone. I think it has to be something with the preloaded keyboard(s) on the system because as soon as I disabled the other two keyboards (samsung and swipe) that were preinstalled and installed the google keyboard, no more lag.

install the google one and wait for the, 5.1.1 update
After root and installing a custom ROM I have not had one bit of stutter.
The only app that occasionally lags is Fleksy, a third party keyboard
Im with google keyboard and it lags terribly, to the point that I need to wait 2-3 seconds between chararcters!!! I had S1, nexus 4, nexus 5 and this device is simply amazingly bad. keyboard lag on a 2015 flagship??? unbelievable. Never going to buy samsung again. After 3 beautiful years with the nexuses, Im considering flashing roms again. sad.
BTW, keyboards legs are not the only legs. I have wallpaper scrolling issues, switching apps issues and so on. Does anybody know if there's a tutorial out there to stop all bloatware and manage memory? Might be better trying to control whats running before starting to flash roms.

Turning off vibrate on keypresses seems to help a lot.

Can we talk about how bad the Pie update on poco?

After i saw the pie miui update in system update, i immediately update my poco from oreo to pie immediatelly, thinking the update would make my poco even better, but no i was wrong, i ended up regretting udpating it, wished i stayed on oreo. Here's what the issues I'm facing on pie:
1. You can't disable the notch in settings anymore
2. 30-40% of the time when you use the home gestures to go home, the launcher is refreshing for some reason and it took me 2 seconds to wait my launcher to load
3. The recent apps animation is sluggish and not smooth compared to oreo animations
4. When you use the recent apps gestures then you immediately clicked on other apps, it doesnt go to the app immediately, but instead you must wait like 1 second, then you will able to click on other apps, in oreo it's instant, in pie its not, you must wait for it load 1 second for some reason
5. Performance is slightly worse compare to oreo, i can confirm this by playing pubg, i used to play pubg on HDR with ultra framerate settings on oreo as it is smooth on oreo, but on pie, i can feel its slightly has a lower framerate than on oreo. So now i have to play on smooth with extreme framerate settings in pubg on pie
6. We all know geekbench is a lie, yes i have a higher score on pie than oreo, but i can confirm that is BS. Pie on poco doesn't have a better performance than oreo on poco
7. Batterly is slightly worse than on oreo. When im on oreo, when i play pubg even with HDR settings, i can play a lot longer than on pie, i can truly feel im using a 4000mah battery when im oreo. But when im on pie, i feel like im using a 3000mah battery phone when im playing pubg. It drains the battery more than when im on my oreo
It's kinda weird why no one talking about this. As i assume you guys have never received the pie udpate or what?
Hi.
Finally somehas the same issues. I thought it is only my phone. I used it with xiaomi.eu developer rom but experienced the same lags. I dont do games. But I can confirm the same slowness when returning to homescreen. Sometimes it took 5-10 seconds to return to the homescreen. Now I am on pixel experience rom. The antutu score is much lower. But the overall experience is much smoother. Are you on the official 10.1 stable?
@w1040 - 1. is a nuisance, though natchonotch sorts it out
Aside from that, I haven't seen the other issues you list, though there wasn't really any user facing good stuff in the pie update - bit of a let down

Why do i wanna install a third party notch hider rather than just using the built in notch hider in setings that is now sadly gone
Well, They still won't fit the notch.
Don't know what they're thinking anymore.
2, 3 and 4 are the worst parts, such a turn off to use miui. Additionally, discarding notification, you can only swipe to the right as to the left opens a menu, which is also annoying. The transparent theme is also annoying and UI as a whole feels sluggish. I was impressed by Oreo when I first got the phone, but really hate pie, so Im sticking to lineage OS as I like it way more.
1. nacho notch will do the trick. I read somewhere in fhe forum that google asked to remove the hide notch feature. Not sure about the veracity of the claim.
The rest of the issues is not present on my phone.
I'm so disappointed in this phone it was overhyped by too many sources. I'll just buy a used flagship next time.
My sd845 just for calling and messaging purpose, disappointed with poco software and the poco dev...
And everyone is forgetting no more full screen gaming.
And screen recording creates black bars on 3 sides with different widths.
So damn annoying.
The only stuff that goes full-screen now is YouTube just the inverse of what was the case on oreo, all apps were full screen except for YouTube.
Can anyone help me disable Screen Pinning? The worst problem I'm facing right now. I accidentally tap the pin and I have no idea how to get out. A nice popup tells me to press back and recents at the same time. But that doesn't work with full screen gestures nor with buttons - mirrored or not. The most frustrating update. Period.

Any point in going down to Nougat?

Hey there!
I have an H930 version of the V30 non-root and I love the phone. However, the Pie update is not to my liking. I feel like the phone feels slower to use and there are some aesthetic choices I do not agree with. I have decided that I will downgrade my phone to 8.0 but as I started thinking if I will lose any features of note I thought to myself "Do I even need 8.0?".
I am wondering if any of you are still on Nougat and if so why or if anyone remembers what Nougat was like on the V30 (never had it on mine). Could it be that it was more optimized since it was the initial software the phone came out with? And primarily - what was the battery life like?

Nougat is too old. Better go with rooted oreo and use kernel like Ceres and mods like Anxious v30 mod.
With oreo rooted you can even use DTS

Oreo has lots of fixes and camera improvements, especially post -January 2019. With root you can enable DTS framework. Even pre-January 2019 Oreo is not recommended for daily use.
That's one reason why we say to immediately update to latest Oreo firmware after bootloader unlock and root.
Thanks for all the replies! I skipped straight to oreo when I got my phone so that's why I'm unsure of things. May I ask what DTS is since all of you are mentioning it here?
Also from my understanding feature wise there isn't MUCH of a difference between 7.0 and 8.0 and that's the only reason why I considered it. Granted there are a few things for sure but f rom some research I did i wouldn't miss anything that android in general gets in 8.0. Tho camera improvements do sound nice and that's something I'd like to have on my phone so high chance I'll just go to Oreo.
EDIT: Are there any super minimal oreo roms you guys would recommend? My phone is not rooted (yet) but I would consider it if there are any minimal roms around that improve performance/battery life. Tho I'll dive into searching the forums cause I bet similar questions have been asked before.

To further the discussion, this below
was ONE change log to Oreo in late 2018. One. There have been many others. Thus, I don't understand why anyone would want to run earlier pre-2019 firmware, especially Nougat?

change log:
- DTS: X 3D stereo effect function has been added.
- New Always On Display options
- Selfie camera portrait mode
- Improved accessibility.
- Improved keyboard performance
- Improved the delay of keyboard input when installing multiple market apps at once.
- Photo display error in some apps since Google's latest security patch has been improved.
- Improved to keep app aspect ratio settings after app updates.
- Improved the phenomenon that fine lines are displayed on some screens when power saving mode is executed.
- Google Security Update has enhanced your phone's security.
Most of the list is found here in the link below -- plus the AOD and selfie camera portrait feature are from public reports. The AOD I verified myself, but the selfie thing seems to be subtle.

Root Oreo ROM and install Ceres kernel on it. You'll be happy.

That's going to be the plan for now thanks!
I run stock Oreo 22j in my H930, it's perfectly stable, fast and great battery life. For aesthetic you just need to play with it a little bit, try to find some launcher, icon pack and widgets to your liking.
