Internal Storage shows up as 0 MB in TWRP - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Was trying to install Lineage 14.1 a few moments ago, from my internal storage. Opened TWRP and noticed that the ROM zip wasn't showing up, so when I tried to switch storage, I noticed that the Internal Storage is showing as 0 MB.
Also when I opened the TWRP log (or whatever it's called), it shows something like 'Unable to mount /data'
I've heard this sort of thing happening when one's device is encrypted but mine isn't, so I'm at my wit's end so as to what's happening with my phone.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Edit 1: Thank you for the replies, guys. I was able to solve the issue by flashing the custom TWRP linked on the ROM thread.

I had this problem recently too.
This is TWRP problem and new ROMs. To solve it I had installed OrangeFox R6-beta.
Unfortunately, I don't know version original TWRP where it fixed.

It is due to TWRP not handling encrypted storage properly. OrangeFox TWRP (R6 beta) fixes the problem. Get a copy here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/orangefox/files/mido/

From twrp. Go to wipe. Advance. Then select data and tap "change or repair filesystem" at the bottom of screen. Then tap repair filesystem. After it's done. Format data

If you have the necessary usb drivers installed on your PC, you can use fastboot to install the OrangeFox recovery image - extract recovery.img from the OrangeFox zip file, and run these commands
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot boot recovery.img
After that, you can install the full OrangeFox zip installer, using OrangeFox itself.

Fastboot wipe kr do bhai thk ho jyga .. mere sath v 1 ya 2 din phle aysa hua tha jb maine Linega Os 15.1 Install kiya tha tb.
fastboot devices
fastboot -w
Then Reboot recovery.

Use a external storage
You copy *.IMG file and you flash IMG with twrp

Yup. As others said too, it's a bug of newer treble roms such as Lineage or Pixel Experience. Also the fault of twrp which I'm not sure what causes the issue. Formatting /data/solved it temporarily. Flashing Orange Fox R6 beta solved the issue permanently. Although you will need an external storage with the flashable zip of the recovery on it. Get a 1-2 gb external sr card for dirt cheap, put the recovery on it then flash it via your current twrp. It's your best shot.

If you made sure your SD card is legit and bought it from trusted vendor then tested it with various tools so you can tell for sure it's working fine then make sure to save all of your important stuff to your micro SD card. Wipe your system/data/vendor/internal storage partitions in regular Twrp then do a factory reset or format data, they're the same.
Flashing order:
1) ROM
2) Open Gapps Package
3) Magisk (if required)
4) Kernel (if required)
5) Orange Fox
6) Reboot
7) If everything is fine reboot to recovery
Data should be mounted now.
Clean wipe, flash solves 99% of mounting / encryption / storage problems. If not it's likely that your problem is Hardware related.

only Orange Fox is not flashing on redmi note 4

I've found the solution. Here are the steps:
1. Convert your portable sd card into internal sd card
2. Flash TWRP 2.8.7.0 with rashr app
3. Copy TWRP 3.0.0 zip file into /data/media/0
4. Reboot into recovery
5. Flash TWRP 3.0.0, which is located in /data/media/0, from the recovery
6. Reboot into your new recovery
same result

so what to do? You had that bug at first, how do we solve it?
I had the bug with the adoptable storage. Mounted the card as external, rebooted to TWRP, did another format from TWRP, rebooted, mounted the card as internal, and now I have no issues. Sadly, this requires that you delete all your apps on sdcard, and I can tell you that Easy Backup & Restore and Titanium Backup do not work.

Sadly, a lot of users had issues with TWRP 3.0 stuck at loading screen after the update, and I'm guessing there is something messed up with the way SD card is formatted when that happens. Anyway, I'm almost certain that the issues is upstream.

[Solved] E:Unable to mount '/data'

Hi.
I have strange issue, i was listening to music from my phone when it turned off, i thinked that the battery discharged so charged it and tried to boot up but then i get an error "Encryption was unsuccesful" and it only allows me to format phone. When i click it Turn off my phone and boot it in recovery mode (TWRP) and gets some "E:Unable to mount'/data'" and "E:Unable to mount storage" and reboot to ROM with the same error.
If i manually go to recovery i get few "E:Unable to mount '/data'".
What can i do now? Any solution to it? I readed that if i change recovery i will be able to format data, but my pc don't recognise my phone while it's in download mode (in recovery pc see it). Please help me fast
I was using Temasek Cyanogen mod 13 v3.2
I suppose you had your microsd card configured as internal storage. Something gone wrong and probably card got damaged. Try to remove card before entering recovery.

Poco F1 internal Memory encrypted after loading MIUI Backup

Hi, I'm fairly new to XDA, flashing custom roms and rooting, but I'm really desperate right now.
I know many people probably already have had the same issue, but after searching all over the internet i didn't find my exact problem.
I used Nitrogen OS on my Pocofone F1, but after 1 Month of usage I wanted to try MIUI again, an important thing I remember is that i flashed a new kernel,
but I don't know if that makes any difference.
I made a backup of MIUI without any data on it (i made a hard reset before, so nothing would go wrong) and then installed Nitrogen OS the correct way (i wiped dalvik, data, ...) and everything, even installed the decrypter and everything worked fine.
Now I deleted dalvik, data, cache, ... and loaded the Backup of MIUI and as soon as I booted I suddenly got a bootup password, even though i should get nothing at all because it's basically a clean install.
I tried the normal password that i used all the time, but it didn't work, so i decided to get back to twrp.
Now i got a decryption password, that i don't know and the internal memory is 0 bytes large.
I loaded the nitrogen os backup that i also made, but it didn't work.
I read on other forums, that i should format my internal memory and try to flash the disable-force-encryption again, but i don't really know what to do exactly. i know how to format the memory, it's on the bottom when you want to delete data, dalvik, cache,... but still... .
Even if my phone is briked now, can anyone help me? I really don't know what to do

First of all your phone isn't bricked. It's going to be ok.
The bad thing is that you will lose your internal storage.
The procedure to format data is :
(While in twrp) "mount"-> check "data"-> "repair change file system" -> format your data partition.
After that, no password will be asked. Now wipe system davlik cache and data and reboot into recovery again.
If you have sd card installed start flashing. If you don't, you need to plug into a pc and copy what you need inside your internal storage.

Yes. That's the solution. After that your device will get encrypted again on reboot, unless you flash encryption disabler. I would suggest keeping the encryption and not flashing anything more

The error 7 occurs due to outdated vendor/firmware. Download latest firmware and flash it before the rom you want (for example if you want to clean flash a rom: wipe system, davlik, cache, data.. flash firmware.. flash rom [you won't get error 7].. flash gapps.. reboot)

wiping data partition makes internal storage un-decrytable to twrp recovery

hello,
As I face some issues with my rom thought to do a fresh start by resetting the data partition via orange fox recovery which bases on twrp and try to flash another rom. but once I wiped the data partition recovery could not decrypt the internal storage data on the next boot. honestly, this issue happens to me several times, and thus thought to start a thread for some helping hands for this issue. if anybody faces this please let me know the solution. thanks
somehow I got the data partition decrypted by re-flashing the same rom

You didn't get it decrypted. It's still encrypted but since you flashed the same rom that was there, the encrypted data partition is readable again. If you try to install a different rom you must FORMAT data partition to decrypt it. Wiping is different from formatting.
Sent from my curtana using XDA Labs
Well Me too faced this with "Curtana"
I forced to use SD card to copy the rom to phone and install it.
( I will test today Pixel experience Recovery to make sure )

-twrp by mauronofrio
You could have sideloaded the ROM from your computer. No need to use separate SD card for ROM installation and it's also faster.

Problem installing magisk-cant access internal memory from twrp

Hi all, I need a little help, I've unlocked bootloader and installed twrp recovery (that's wiped data on the phone and I've reinstalled apps and accounts).
The guide i was following ask to reboot and boot twrp recovery (working) and to install magisk zip file copied from PC to internal memory
I copied magisk in internal memory (root and download folders) but in TWRP I can't see the storage i get from PC, only different folders.
I tried also adb sideload D:\Android\Magisk-v21.2.zip directly from PC but i get errors on mounted file systems yrying to install files i think, I tried to check and mount file systems in TWRP advanced options but I can't mount them ...
How can I install Magisk ?

go in twrp to advanced wipe --> format data partition to ext2 --> wait --> when done format back to ext4 --> wait --> now see if your OS recognizes the USB android device. try usb replugging if not --> now you should see a new partion where you can write in your file explorer on HOST OS.

Ok since It is wiping data partition and I'm under mobile connection I'll do this in the next couple of days back home. Just to confirm, I can see internal memory partition from host OS without problems, I can copy files from OS to mobile. The problem is that rebboting in recovery TWRP I can't see FROM MOBILE that partition and folders, so I can't access magisk file I copied ...
With your suggestion do you mean that the new formatted partition is visible both in TWRP and OS ?

Ok since It is wiping data partition and I'm under mobile connection I'll do this in the next couple of days back home. Just to confirm, I can see internal memory partition from host OS without problems, I can copy files from OS to mobile. The problem is that rebboting in recovery TWRP I can't see FROM MOBILE that partition and folders, so I can't access magisk file I copied ...

I found many and they are all similar...
- Unlock boot loader
- Install recovery TWRP
- Reboot in recovery (sometimes from phone other guides from image on PC)
- install magisk copied from OS from twrp recovery
Everything is clear except for I can't access the data partition from TWRP in the last step so I can't see the copied magisk file and I can't mount the partitions in TWRP (i get an error)
A couple of guides:
Root OnePlus 7T Pro (hotdog) and Install TWRP Recovery 3.4.0 (androidweblog.com)
Download Latest Magisk zip 21.2 and Magisk Manager 8.0.4 and Root your phone (getdroidtips.com)
In the second one they use the sdcard partition but I don't have sdcard on 7T Pro ...
You can point me to a different method if available to get magisk installed ...
Thanks for the help

so when you do as i said you are in twrp cos you booted to it. twrp will read and be able to access your phones storage. you are not wiping the data partion but are formating it to ext2 and then back to ext4 (still do backup as data will be lost). this enables twrp to circumvent the oxygen decryption / format. NOW and only AFTER THAT dont reboot (dont), but now your HOST can copy the desired magisk to the phone that is still in twrp RECOVERY MODE. Thus you can now install it with twrp since twrp can now access and read the recently copied image. anyways i wont do it. i used a patched magisk image. was the only thing that ultimately worked for a clean rooting and it didnt even unlock the /system_boot and /vendor partions but it works. find in the oneplus 7t pro guideds forum topic your corresponding magisk image and flash it to disk with fastboot flash boot magisk-patched.img. that worked pretty well when you use the right android version 10.0.x.etc.
actually, wtf do i know. i just followed this thread:
[Guide] How to Root OnePlus 7T Pro with TWRP
thanks for this detailed root process, I've been looking for this for around 3days. (my OP7t pro is coming today will try this root method)
forum.xda-developers.com
Clearly stated in the TWRP thread, decrypting OOS is not working. And I wouldn't even bother formating data.
In order to flash zip is TWRP you most execute;
"adb push magisk.zip /cache",
then in TWRP go into that folder and flash the file.
Or you can do patched image method, you can find guides in guides section.
Some basic researching would also help.

PERFECT thank you very much, got only a couple of warnings at the end:
failed to mount /system_root (permission denied)
failed to mount /vendor (permission denied)
But It seems correct.
I will check for patched image to better understand what is tha advantage compared to the standard one.

Those errors are nothing to worry about since it's not possible to modify those partitions on stock.
