Nexus 9 gaming performance - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This tablet is the same as the shield tablet how come it play games so badly if this can begin what’s the best custom rom and Kerman to play games on?

It overheats and throttles. The Tegra K1 in this tablet is not the same as the one in the Shield tablet. Same GPU, much different CPU. This one gets hotter. It really is too hot for a fanless tablet if you try to run it at full utilization for a long period of time, as a game will.
You can try underclocking the CPU. That will probably make it perform better for games because the GPU will run faster.
Actually it's not really "overheating" exactly. It has a temperature limit and once it hits that temp, it slows down the CPU and GPU to stay under that temp. It's a power limit. It uses too much power to run at full speed continuously for a long period of time in a tablet.

I'm using Slimrom with Fire Ice Kernel.
PUBG runs pretty well using gfxtools with low setting + 30fps.
But the game began to lag after 15min due to thermal throttle.
Will try the heatsink mod later and hopefully able to improve the performance...

Phone too hot to touch after 5 minutes of gaming.

Hi all, running lite'ning rom 1.4 and just played order and chaos for 5 minutes and the phone became too hot to touch! Surely this shouldn't be right, i mean what the hell! Anyone else have this?

Actually yes, many people have this. It's the CPU overheating.Beware,it doesn't get hotter than other CPUs on the market, but heat disipation on the GS2 is minimal as the phone is so thin.
The only thing you can try is lowering the CPU clock to 1000Mhz or even 800Mhz when gaming. You can even boost your GPU to 400Mhz up from 267Mhz and don't overheat then. There will also be no performance hit as games run mainly on the GPU and two cores running at 1GHz are more than enough to handle the background.
I havent noticed the phone getting super hot as some people have noted. I do notice that it does get a lot hotter if its plugged in and charging while playing a game. Are you by chance charging while playing? If so, I'd try and play while not charging to see if it gets really hot still.
No this isnt while charging and it literally was 5 minutes of playing! How do I change the cpu and gpu speeds safetly?
it also depends on the game itself, many of them are just poorly programmed
to your question: setcpu is the app.

I dont have an SGS2 yet but your statement has a total flaw, if games mainly use the GPU then there should be zero need to underclock the CPU.

Have you ever seen anything running on the GPU ONLY?What I mean is that the GPU processes the graphics, which are important when playing a game. The CPU takes on other tasks, like opponent's AI(artificial intelligence),background and foreground code running and many other things.Sound maybe? All these things keep the CPU running at 100% for no reason.Lower the clock and voila!
Check first before you try to say I'm wrong next time.I don't usually say bullsh!t with such things.

[Q] carcassonne cpu usage

I've recently purchased carcassonne from the market and while I love the game, it does seem to eat up the battery pretty quickly. So i'm wondering if its just me or are other folks experiencing this too?
Bit of background, i'm running Cognition 1.51 on an sgs2 and while playing the game it looks like it consumes around 58% (average) cpu. This to me seems excessively high. Carcassonne for those that are not aware of it is a tile based board game, which doesn't seem to me to be a candidate for a fast cpu. Yep, i could understand that the AI might require CPU but surely not for the rest of teh game.
So question is, does anybody else have the game and do you notice high cpu usage on it?
I didn't play that game but 58% consumption after how long playing? Do keep in mind that a playing a game is CPU intensive task, so CPU will be hot and battery will drain much faster than other stuffs.
Regards.
Ordinarily yes I'd agree about games and CPU usage. But for this type of game I'd expect it to have very minimal requirements.
Also I started up a fresh game and left it waiting for me to play my turn. Leaving it waiting for twenty mins and when i checked utilization it was still 30%. Given that there was no animations or screen activity that does seem excessively high.
Am trying out miui rom now to see if that makes any difference.

Curious about our gpu

im curious if its possible to somehow manage the power consumption of our phones during heavy gpu usage. when i watch youtube or play games it drains super quick. i was just wondering if there was a way to make it work more efficiently with our processor or is the processor clocking what defines the gpu power consumption?

The Qualcomm MSM8655 is what's known as a SoC, system on chip. The GPU is on the die. Whatever demands are made on the GPU are effectively made to the whole chip. If you're looking to reduce the power it uses, you need to being down the top clock rate.

Is my Z5c throttling?

Hello guys,
I bought this phone about two days after release and was pretty happy with it. It felt like the Snapdragon 810 didn't overheat at all and the performance was far better than on my "old" Z3.
Reason enough for me to try PPSSPP and emulate some good old games. For example MHP3rd ran at 100% speed in every area in-game with no frameskip activated.
But after some time (I'd say 20-30 mins) the cpu throttled a lot. The game speed was only at 50% even though the device didn't feel THAT hot (I've seen/felt hotter ones).
I tried the same thing again with the app "CPU Temp", and it seems like the CPU temperature never exceeded about 58°C. I'm not sure about smartphone CPUs but as far as I know, most chips can take up to 80-90°C until they start throttling. My Z5c runs at 52-58°C perfectly fine, but suddenly starts throttling for some reason.
Is it the CPU governor that tries to save battery life? I'd probably need to root the phone to "fix" this, but there are no roots available yet.
Or is it something else? Is the max. cpu temperature set too low? Could it be the S810 has no real temperature sensor and CPU Temp shows me something completely different?
Thanks in advance!
Greets,
Uftherr
I think that Sony it's throttling the CPU more to be below 58°C than to save battery life.
Try with the latest firmware (released today at PC Companion) it seems to be a little more snappier (maybe its a placebo).
I don't know why because the kernel is from the same date.
I consider that they should let the phone gain 65°C to increase the performance (at heat cost).

GPU CPU Usage

Hi Guys. I play Black desert mobile on poco and when I have High graphics the gpu usage is around 30% while the cpu is 25%. Everything is ok, I can't say something about that. The point is that when I set the graphics to max settings, the usage of the graphics card goes between 35% - 60% and the processor is around 35%. For this reason, I would like you to tell me, how much the usage of gpu affects the overall 'health' and performance of the mobile, if it matters at all . What I mean is, whether it is 30% or 60%, will it affect the mobile in general? For example, I can use max graphics all the time without damaging the phone?

Ok thank you. Are you sure though ? I mean have you checked if there is any difference between the battery power after and before playing for many hours ? Or with the performance in general? Because I can play sometimes many hours a day.
