I have a Nexus 6p and recently the Facebook app will not let me play any video higher than 240p. Most videos only have a 180p option. The videos have terrible quality. I have tried reinstalling Facebook and deleting the files associated with it, but I cannot get normal quality videos to play. My Nexus 6p is running Android 8.1 June security update (might be May, not sure). I recently moved and have Comcast internet with 150mbps. I am not getting throttled. This also happens on other wifis as well as LTE data. There is no option to select a higher video quality. It's only 180p or 240p. I don't know if this plays into it, but YouTube kinda acts this way as well. Although I can change the resolution to 1080p, youtube defaults to 240p or 360p on every video I watch and I have to change it manually for each video. I have data saver off in Facebook and YouTube. I also have it off on my phone. Anyone have ideas why this is happening?

That's wired because YouTube and Facebook do that only when your internet connection is poor .
Check your internet speed again here :

If you still see a good internet connection , I don't understand what's wrong .

That's why I can't figure this out. My home wifi is supposed to be 150mbps, but when I do speed tests, its actually 170-180. When I use LTE data and do speed tests, speeds are about 25-30. When I used Comcast hotspots, speeds are still 60-100. When I use other internet hot spots, speeds are anywhere from 30-80. All of the speeds are more than capable of supporting 1080p video bandwidth. I also don't seem to have excessive ping either. So I can figure out why Facebook won't let me play any video higher than potato quality.

Same problem here with a 6P on the latest update. I have tried everything short of a complete wipe and reinstall. Stuck at 180p and 240 when I am lucky. The HD button doesn't work. I did notice a live video that looked like 480p today, but it was just the one video.

After a few hours, the changes took effect and now my videos default to 720p. That's strange that that had an effect on the issue. Thank you very much for the fix. Is it possible to get 1080p Facebook video?
You might try using other model numbers. I settled on 720p being good enough until Facebook updates things or if the next Android update fixes it.

Probably due to same issue with HQ Youtube videos huh?
How can I bypass the "This device is not supported by Netflix" that I get when clicking on a title on my Instant Queue, so I can see if it is working or if it just audio only. Is there a way to spoof the app into thinking I am on a supported phone? If so, please tell me how to do it. Thanks.
There is an apk that will not check for device compatiblity but yeah no video. For me it plays audio and then it kicks out back to the queue. I wish it worked. Anything we can do?
Can't tell anything without knowing what codec / format Netflix is using in this app. I'm sure they're using H.264, but if it's not H.264 Baseline Profile then our phone hardware can't decode it. And if it's larger than 640x360 resolution, our current codec can't handle it.
I don't have a Netflix account so I haven't tried to see what formats they're using.
The current codec we have is written in C++ with threads. I'd say that's at least a 10% performance hit right there; if it was written well, in straight C, it would probably have achieved the 800x480 that Qualcomm's original spec claimed.

HQ YouTube works more or less. There's a little stutter sometimes, and some HQ videos start and then stop after 5 or 10 seconds, and some others play just fine. Oh, and the libs fixed video playback of the mp4 movies I already had on my device.
Weird thing is, YouTube under WinMo refuses to play HQ videos at all.

It used to. Some time back YouTube changed something, and now HQ videos play without sound (I was thinking they didn't play at all). Supposedly you can fix this by changing your network to "media," but I don't have that option any more since I upgraded to 6.5.

I just rebooted to see. Worked fine for me, I'm on 6.5 - but I used Opera... I don't know if there's some app that I should be using, perhaps it wasn't truly HQ.
Either way, if it used to then there shouldn't be anything limiting the hardware. Seems hyc went thru all that pretty thoroughly tho.

I was using the HTC YouTube app. I tried it on two different 6.5 TP2s and they both do the same thing, HQ video plays, but no sound.
And your right. I know the hardware is capable, just somewhere along the way something in the software got screwed up on YouTube's end or mine.

I don't think the new version checks to see what model you're running.
The new Netflix app has a LOT of compatibility issues.
They still can't get it working on most Huawei S7 ROMs, and that device can do 720p easily.
Hello, recently (like android 4.2) youtube has decided to stop buffering videos whenever it feels like it, which means the video just hangs when it gets there with the little buffer wheel spinning. Sometimes it will continue to load the video after it stops, but most of the time it just locks up the whole app and you have to force close it and re-launch it. I have tried clearing app cache and data and what not, but nothing has helped. I even tried turning off wifi optimization, but that didn't help either. I thought that maybe it was my ISP, but the same videos in the browser play just fine with no buffering at all. It seems to do this regardless of the length of the video. I get about 30mbps down and 5.5up when I run speedtest on my tablet, so I don't think it's the connection that's causing the issue. I should also mention that this happens regardless of quality. It will load relatively quickly to a certain point, then just never buffer again. I fear the only way to resolve this issue will be a factory reset.
This Reddit thread solved my YouTube issues. I have fios, fyi.

I get this! All started when I upgraded to android 4.3! Its highly annoying, and the only way. I have found to fix it is to kill the YouTube app, find the video and place you where at, and then go from there
I also had this issue before the YouTube app was recently updated
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 4
I'm having the exact same issue! I might get it to play one video and the it buffers constantly. Anybody else have this issue? I'm running stock 4.3 uprooted. YouTube works fine on my s4 and laptop, but hangs on the Nexus 10!

I hope they will fix that issue soon

Try an app called "Viral' from the playstore. I started using it as it can play YouTube music videos in the background while I'm using some other app. Recently I've been having issues with the default YouTube app and discovered that Viral did not have those issues. It may be worth giving it a try. I'm using a 4.4 custom ROM linked in my signature so your mileage may vary.
The issue I'm having is YouTube stops half way through a video and simply will not continue playing that video from the stop point, even after a reboot. I can play another video but it too stops half way or so in.
The YouTube app isn't NEARLY as good as it should, I'm still enraged and disgusted about the fact that the YouTube app on iPad is so MUCH better than the Android one, it has gestures to let you toggle full screen , it has pull down to refresh on lists (like the pull down to refresh on the gmail app), if you exit the app and come back, the video you were playing doesn't have to be rebuffered again (it keeps a few seconds buffered so you can watch the video quickly) AND worst of all, the iOS app lets YOU choose the resolution of your stream, what you get isn't an HD "on" and "off" toggle, you get proper choosing, like on the website, you get to choose between 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p AND 1080p, HD on our app is 720p, not 1080p, actually Google disabled the option from all android apps.
After that update I lost a lot of faith in Google, no wonder the iPad has so many more high quality apps, if you want devs to take you seriously, then YOU should give proper support to your devices, 1080p streams should have been available ever since our N10 was released, this **** is just unacceptable.
Thanks @3DSammy for the tip about the Viral app. :highfive:
Well, I figured out the issue, but not a fix. I think it's tied to comcast's router. I set up an old linksys with a broadcomm wireless unit as a repeater and I haven't had a single issue since. Numerous router resets and devices restores did nothing. It doesn't make any sense though because it only happens with the YouTube app, but same settings and everything I was able to watch a video completely on my nexus 10 on the repeater that I could not get through on comcast's router/modem(Aaris unit). It's strange though because my repeater connects wirelessly to my comcast router, so it goes nexus 10 to linksys repeater to comcast's router. It could be a security issue I guess, but I didn't look into it.
I see the guys in the International LG G3 forum talking about recording slow mo, but I don't see any options for the video recording on the Sprint version
I'm sure it's super-obvious, but does anyone know how to do this?
Thanks!!
[EDIT]
I found it! You go to the little gear icon in the top left of the camera application. Click the little "##M" icon that chooses megapixels... it drops down and let's you choose 120HD for slow mo.

Took me a couple of minutes to find also.
I'm glad they gave us the ability to record @ 120 but when it comes to editing how the video looks there are no options.
So even though we can play the video at 1/8 speeds (slowmo) we can't upload or share the video at the speeds. It then just becomes a 720p 120FPS video instead of slomo....
The question that I have is: Where is the ability to edit the video so that certain parts of the video can be slowed down?
Unless I'm missing something on the phone the software is a little lacking in this area.
Thanks for posting this i had no idea we had this capability

It should be noted that I had to remove YouTube twice using System app remover (ROOT) (pro), firstly I removed from User Apps but then when I rebooted YouTube was still present and started updating automatically. I then removed another YouTube that was present in the System Apps section and so it was removed completely.

Not sure I understand this YouTube HDR video thing...
HDR, in photos, is a high dynamic range from multiple exposures. So shadows are boosted, etc.
How can a video be HDR? So say it's a high dynamic range and colours and shadows are boosted. Okay. But what feature does YouTube "HDR" then apply together with our Note 8 screens that's so special as opposed to viewing it on any other device? Not quite sure I fully understand.

Anyone have issues with lag? When I select 1440p 60fps HDR, the video will start to slow down and begins to skip. [...] It's not my internet connection either as I have 200Mbps download

Is the video buffering when it skips? If so, are you on WiFi or LTE? If it's LTE, some carriers throttle you whenever you're streaming video.
Mine does the same thing. Doesn't matter if it's on Wi-Fi or LTE. 1080p HDR and 1440p HDR both lag. 1440p is a fast slideshow. Unwatchable atm. Until either YouTube or there is a patch it fittest work right. So far have confirmed outs on everyone phone I have tested from people at work. 4 including mine. Netflix hdr seems like outta working fine tho.

I'm on Wi-Fi so I know it's the phone. I'm hoping it's the YouTube app as I have no issue with Netflix HDR content.

I have the exact same issue with YouTube HDR. It's unwatchable and i sometimes lose fps when playing HDR content on YouTube
Sent from my Samsung SM-N950F using XDA Labs
Edit 2: https://www.xda-developers.com/hdr-youtube-app-android-1080p-only/
Edit: It appears since then 1080p is the highest resolution for HDR videos. So they removed 1440p and 4K playback for HDR for now. Which is a good sign, it means they realised the problem, and removed it until they fix it. Hopefully it will be soon.

I have the same issue on my Xperia XZ Premium. I only now noticed youtube has HDR support, but playing it at 2160p the videos are very laggy, and slowed down and skip around to keep up with audio. Playing it at 1440p, still a problem but not as bad. At 1080p it's okay, but then again you lose 3 quarters of the resolution by going down to 1080p. What's the point of 4K HDR if it doesn't work? This is a YouTube app problem though. I made a bug report, hopefully they notice it and fix it.
These stats don't really show anything, they look normal, but it's 100% not normal, as it slows down significantly for no reason, it's not buffering or anything. It's like the app can't handle all the data.
Which is wierd as 2160p 60fps videos work fine. The problem is with HDR
