Apart from what I saw in video reviews the odor visibility is surprisingly good. I live where we have sun most of the day and temperatures are high (30c+) and I still can operate the phone even in direct sun light.
Is it really that bad outdoors as people say?

Not at all..
Trust me contrast ratio makes up for it and is not half bad.
I can totally see it in bright days with the Sun shining to it's glory.

Yeah Pie the brightness is very dim compared to Oreo
After the Pie update the Brightness its not bright anymore
Same here. To get the 30% brightness I had on Oreo, I have to go for 70% brightness on Pie. It feels awful
Adaptive brightness
I expected with the release of pie the auto brightness to be fixed . It is better than before but man not useful at all. Mostly keeps dimming the screen and makes it difficult to see. Also when i use slider and increase it, dims again after few seconds. What is the use of adaptive brightness then if it can`t understand my needs.

If you have polarised sun glasses and you want to use navigation with your phone... it is not possible. You cannot see the phone display with polarised sunglases!

The Honor 5X screen has excellent viewing capabilities outside. Along with a pretty good brightness it also changes the contrast when it detects a lot of light falling upon the frontside. The combination of these two make it quite easy to use in sunlight. Of course the glare might be in the way but then just rotate the phone slightly so that you don't reflect the sun in your eyes...
Screen looks good outdoor with Max brightness. The performance is also good in the dark with minimum brightness settings.

autobrightness taking time... But good..
To be fair, no phone meets the might of straight floridian sun beaming down leaving no room for vision. This phone is no different. My iphone 6 is on the same level as this phone. I cant see much out.

LOL...the reflection alone is enough ta' blind ye...
Joking aside, the Honor 5x does well outside, even though the Autobrightness setting is a little slow to compensate (can take a second to recognize it's inside a dark room or outside in full sun). Outside of that it is comparable with many flagship phones over the last couple years in that regard.
I would rate it poor outside in Thai sun with or without auto brightness, iphone 5 onward does little better when I compared .
good enough
AUTO brightness takes time to adjust but if you set brightness mutually then everything will be alright i mean its quite good
Very bright
Good enough, sometimes auto brightness does not work
Good enough. Not too hard to read outdoors.
Great for its price. Easily readable screen
Its one year later, summer 2017 though I love my L24 the display is crappy outside though I turned auto brighten off. I snap alot of wildreness pics out walking, my old iPhone 5c has better outdoor display sadly.

Max brightness helps in readability but not too much. Expected for a midrange device.
Screen readability -- good .
I hope u mean about brightness gopal. That would be a typo

Excellent, it goes really dim! You can use this phone at night without becoming a street light.
You can easily get down to extreme dim level ( No Root Required) on stock using simple Widget/App Dimmer App : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=giraffine.dimmer&hl=en

Android Nougat have an (un)official support of night-mode.
But yes, we need a F.lux like into the stock mode. Like on CyanogenMod.
Good lighting
Not so low , yet convenient
Minimum brightness is still to bright at night. But fixed by installing screen filters.
Minimum brightness is enough for me.

This one... I think the honor 8 Pro can do better. At minimum brightness settings in a dark room, I think it's still bright. <-- Example of usage: Watching videos in bedroom with lights turned off. I know of phones that can go even lower in terms of brightness.
Agree, the minimum brightness could be a bit lower. It is good/ok atm.
For me, it's ok.
Edit - It should have been better

Savage: Find more for me????
adaptive brightness is not good
Honor 8 Pro adaptive brightness is not working properly in phone. sometimes it dims to lowest value and does not increase at all in bright light condition.
manageable. most of the time I can use with minimum brightness under dark condition or night. no problem faced till date.
no problem in night or dark room
dim enough for night usage
Comfortable with eyes.

The brightness is fine. It's not as good as the galaxy s8 but def better than HTC10 or honor 8\ p9. I watched basketball on it the other day and it was great.
light can be set to very dimmed but the color contrast is still vivd. Good!
I have the Pixel 2 and the Essential. I think the Essential gets brighter. Very satisfied on that front.
This phone is more bright then most people think because some people don't turn off the adaptive screen option when they want to maximize the brightness. It makes a huge different without that option.

True. Having this feature turned on by default should be punished to life in prison.
I mean you make the screen the highlight of the phone, and then nerf is by default??? WTF
It's ok, but not excellent.
I rate it approximately equal to most other devices in full sunlight outdoors. You will want to shade it with your body but, having done so, it's acceptable.

Have been using Zenfone 5, Padfone 8, Zenfone 2 and Zenfone Selfie, all have high minimum brightness. Can some one confirm about minimum brightness on this phone compared to Redmi Note 3 (Kenzo)? It was pain to use Zenfone in the dark.

Can you answer about minimum brightness, because that (You don't want to give your significant other yet another reason to yell at you while you're reading XDA in bed. Rate this thread to express what you think of the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1's display minimum dimness. Night light just about filtering blue light, not about minimum brightness. Bright yellow light still anoying in the dark, minimal brightness will do.
yup. minimum brightness is not comfortable. I use twilight to mitigate this. Hope Asus solves this in future updates.
Or may be with some custom kernels we'll be able to do that.

Is there any update which improves upon this? I just want it's as dim as note 5pro.
Try switching on/off adaptive brightness and then sliding the brightness to minimum. Otherwise CF.Lumen by Chainfire is a great app.

Awful, isn't it? My phone's ambient light sensor doesn't seem to be working well either. Like it can't make up it's mind on how much screen brightness to give off when faced with different lighting conditions...suddenly getting bright and dimming for no apparent reason and not dynamically or smoothly but abruptly - even after the latest OTA update (and numerous attempts at adjusting brightness/auto brightness and trying out 3rd party apps).
I would have thought Asus would have at least prioritized this issue over the last OTAs instead of fooling around with additional bloatware. Hope they come up with a solution soon, because I'm getting all cross-eyed. :cyclops:
