When my wife first showed it to me it only showed the clock and notification icons in the upper middle of the screen. Pressing the power button only made it brighter or dimmer, but if you held the power button the shutdown menu would come up and you could interact with the menu fine. If you shut it down and restarted it the lock screen would show for a second at which point you could tap and get it to acknowledge a swipe giving you the PIN screen, but you couldn't enter a PIN. After pulling it's SD card and verifying her pictures were on there I factory reset it thinking a software problem, or a run away app eating CPU.
While setting itself up after the reset, around 90% I watched the screen "shrink" to a inch or so square in the upper middle of the screen. What I mean by shrink is, inside the square I could still see a bit of "Android is starting up" and the white background, but outside that was black. That's when I started thinking it thought it was in a case with the cover closed, it doesn't have a screen protector ATM so I cleaned the glass over the proximity sensor, even opened it up and cleaned the inside of the glass for giggles. That didn't help, now when it boots up I get nothing but the backlight of the LCD, I assume because it's waiting for me to finish the setup process, it still will bring up the power off menu and I can shut it down or reboot it fine.
So now I'm trying to figure out, does it have a reed switch somewhere and a magnet in a case cover, or does it use the proximity sensor to see if the cover is closed? If I can figure out how it tells there's a cover over the glass I'll just remove that sensor and be done with it

Any guesses on which side of the board? I've run across a couple candidate IC's, looking for my loupe's now to see if I can read anything off them.

When I tap the bottom portion of my screen using stylus the screen turns to different colors.(Also happens when pressing HOME and LEFT buttons sometimes).
So my question is do I need LCD or just digitizer replaced? I did notice the Digitizer is a little raised.
Replacing it is not a option
I don't know if this helps, but I had the exact same problem for about a week, then it seemed to work ok except on pressure at the bottom of the screen, the entire display would go off color.
I took it into the sprint store and they replaced the entire top sliding portion of the phone. I was hoping to get a replacement TP2 but at least its fixed.... Now maybe the new NFSFAN rom will keep me happy for a while..
After I updated my Nokia Lumia 920. the screen turns off when im dialing someone, and the only way to get it back is to restart it or if the person on the other end hangs up.
Could it be the light sensor? or is it just the phone update that messed it up?

now its REALLY FIXED but need to open the phone (only two screws )
Symptoms:
Experience screen and touch sensor switch off during a call, Notifications (the screen stays off, like if it was in a pocket) which doesn't turn on as usual.
Try:
If during a call you press and hold the upper left corner of the glass -just between the speaker and the upper left corner- you will notice that the sensor works as expected.
I think :
Because of the layered nature of the phone internals design and the heavy use of ribbon connectors it had to be tight to connect the board with the sensor.
My Solution:
I just added a peace of sponge (W:4mm/H:5mm/L:15mm) (all weather door and window sealant) -that comes self adheasive from one side- and sticked a small peace on the board on the opposite side of the phonejack/secondary mic connectors (Pictures attached) this will add pressure on the board to be more tight tried it and working as normal.

Mine is suffering the same issue. In the Nokia forums one user recommended to "blow air" across the top of the phone where the display meets the case right above the Nokia logo. I did this and now my proximity sensor is working. It's got to be dust getting on the sensor. I'm going to take mine apart and see if I can come up with a seal for the FFC and proximity sensor.

my girlfriend smashed her Galaxy S3 sometimes. Now it's done, the glass is broken in the upper left corner. The screen worked fine. A few days later she dropped it and dropped it again... i think she needs some wooden sticks to make a bushfire to call her friends. After some drops the screen stopped working fine. The screen turns black and if i push the upper left side a bit, the screen apears... very purple. I watched some tutorials about replacing the glass'. So i opend the galaxy s3 checked the ribboncables and after reasembling the screen won't start anymore. The softkeys doesn't apears. The phone is booting and make sounds. That means, power is there but no power for the display. I only want to now if the display is okay or not, to buy a new glass. But now i have these power problem. Somebody know how i can fix it? Or do i need a new display with digitizer? It's not cheap... a glass is much ceaper .

Ordered a screen replacement for my wife's busted S3 screen. Got it, followed directions....got the area around the headphone jack a little too warm, but continued and finished removing the screen. Once I had the screen off, I thought it would be a good idea to power it up to make sure everything was working, especially the top left corner of the screen that was closest to the over heated spot.
To my skeptical surprise everything was cool. Took a picture, looked at some higher res pictures....just to make sure everything seemed normal, to which it did. Powered down, removed the battery and the SIM card and continued on.
I cleaned the screen with alcohol as the directions stated, put everything back together..and NOTHING. The thing is bricked. Any ideas how? I wasn't doing anything remotely related/close to the ROM. The only difficulty I had with any part of this (aside from the aforementioned over heating) was with the two ribbon buttons at the bottom, which got slightly tangled in the tape.
Before I attempt to 'unbrick' this does anyone have any other ideas? Battery is good, phone has been plugged/unplugged while attempting to power up....I didn't take anything else apart so I can't think of anything else that would have goofed up this phone.
If your LCD was broken a new bit of glass wouldn't fix it. It's almost impossible to change just the glass without damaging the digitizer. Most alcohol will destroy an LCD so cleaning it with that is a terrible idea. If you plug your phone into a computer see if it connects, that will at least tell you that the phone is still working, just broken display.

Plugged in or otherwise, I get no LEDs, vibrations....nothing. Wondering if a jtag would even be worth it?
For anyone who is interested, here is my method for fixing the black unresponsive screen during a call.
Like most of you reading this message I had the dreaded black screen during a phone call, which makes it impossible to end the call or dial numbers for automated systems. A lot of suggestions and fixes included blowing into the upper right corner of the phone or into the ear piece. This doesn't work (or it didn't for me) because the proximity sensor which you are allegedly blowing dust off of is pretty well sealed against the outside world. I'm on firmware 1314, which is supposed to have fixed the issue, but did not.
What did work every time was to pinch the phone front to back at the upper right corner right around where the proximity sensor was. I actually later found out you could pinch the phone anywhere in the upper half and the screen would light up.
I opened up the phone, saw that the proximity sensor just kind of flaps freely with a metal back that touches what i think is a grounding plate on the frame. When you pinch the phone it shorts this circuit and makes the proximity sensor behave properly. To make the contact better I cut a piece of aluminum foil, folded it up a couple of times, and wedged it behind the proximity sensor. Put the phone back together, made a call, and voila - screen on away from my face, off when sensor is covered.
Here is a picture of what the proximity sensor looks like on the pcb. I just wedged the foil behind the circled piece and replaced everything.

I didn't have a screen protector on, but i can see how it would cause a problem if it covered the sensor. Now that it's working properly I can see how sensitive it is. If i hover my finger an inch over the sensor, the screen will go dark.
The touchscreen on my Verizon G3 started acting up recently. In the lower portion of the screen there's a space where it doesn't register my touches well (take a look at pics the space in between the lines don't really 'register' my touches. You can see in the second pic I'm currently touching the part where its not really working and it looks like I'm touching the screen with two fingers even though I'm only using one). When I type sometimes two letters are pressed at the same time or its like I didn't touch the screen at all which makes typing difficult and takes a lot of time. The whole screen sometimes doesn't hold a touch, like I tap and hold but it only 'holds' like I only tapped the screen. Other times when I'm sliding my finger across the screen, it starts jumping around. Now the top row of the keyboard/screen doesn't even register touches anymore so can't really do much now. I've reset the phone and didn't fix anything. Is this something LG would fix if I sent the phone in? If so how long is turnaround and will I have to reset it back to stock/unroot it?
if you have any type of glass screen protector on, take it off and verify the issue.
some tg screen protectors are junk, and have caused issues like this.

I had a $5 glass screen protector on it from ebay and thought that was the problem but when I took it off the problems ensued
Some g3s do have or develop touchscreen issues. Check under the back cover that there is nothing putting pressure on the display from behind, like a swelling battery.
It is probably a warranty issue, though.
