How's it going guys I currently have the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and in 15 days I'll be able to jump to a new phone. I have a question for you guys... What are some pros and cons on the s5? I'm huge into flashing roms don't want to be stuck with another phone where the development is kind of dead.(Not knocking on the devs for the T-Mobile note 2 but development was pretty much non extent)
I recently made the jump both to T-Mobile from Verizon and the Galaxy S5 from the S3. I really liked the LG G3, but development there seemed to move at a snail's pace and there's still not much happening. For me it helped that I always ran Beanstown (Alliance) ROMS on my Verizon Galaxy S3 and seeing that team move to T-Mobile was a huge incentive. I like to tinker and maybe somewhere out there people are cooking up some good stuff for the LG, but the T-Mobile Galaxy was both familiar and easy to root, put a recovery on and flash new "available" ROMS. The phone it's self gets the job done and there are even some nice surprises once you plow through all the features. So long story short, if development is important to you, I don't think you can wrong with the Galaxy.

Im extremely happy with this phone even more so after putting alliance on it . I had a Att GS4 for 2 months and it had to go..It had a locked bootloader so there was no kernel flashing what so ever . Only custom roms based off stock . I also was thinking about the G3 until i took a look in the development thread and under original development it said NEVER. Everything meets my standards . Very VERY happy with my purchase
i have always loved stock android for its speed and customization , but with the s5 and xposed it just works very well and the battery life is awesome getting like 3 days on a charge on stock rom .
Also another happy user. When the S5 was announced I was disappointed but later down the line decided to try it again. I love the speed, camera, screen and feel of it. It really makes the s4 seem like a cheap toy in comparison. Used to be a nexus only guy, but will continue to support the galaxy s line.

the device is very powerful and im mostly happy. the one thing that really bugs me is the phone doesnt work very well as a phone. dropped calls when i use wifi calling the person on the other end doesnt hear me sometimes. volte is screwy sound goes in and out during calls. maybe t mobile network is not developed enough,? idk i came from att with galaxy s3 the international one without lte and i had much less problems.
this morning i tried 5 times to make a call finally after reboot i was able to.
again not sure if its the phone, tmobile or my settings or a combination of all. but im not happy

Note 4 is too big. S5 LTE-A as the base flagship device would have been nice though. Otherwise, i came from the S4 and i love my S5. Overall its smoother, battery lasts forever even when downloading all day. Only down side of the phone is i had to pay for it ha.
had good battery life at first then the update killed that, still better than most.
the stock rom has tons of problems glitches errors all that, touchwiz is amazingly bad at everything, the camera is SO bad at focusing and actually taking pictures is a pain, every menu is just a huge wall of choices, no planning or thought went into streamlining TW

tethering will not connect unless using a custom rom
phone slides out of my pocket like it was designed to do it
pixels visible on certain colors because its still a stupid pentile
msg to samsung; please copy the sense 6 msg app exactly, its lightyears ahead of yours
so other than halfway decent battery this phone is disappointing
on my 3rd replacement because data stops working all the time and calls are just pure static but the update fixed that

I did the same thing for all 5 of our lines (ETF pay off was the draw). The S5 is a great device. My mother has an S3 and the screen now looks small compared to the S5. The S5 has fantastic battery life and is very responsive in everything it does.
Very happy with the S5.
Also very happy with T-Mobile.
Overall I'm happy and would do it again.
I have to agree about the camera focus issue.....esp. closeups. I kind of think the the s4 camera was a bit better.
And I've had the s3, s4 and s5 and have always disliked the side button. The s5 is worst of all. I constantly look down at my pocket and my phone is doing things, like I pulled it out one time and it had brought itself into the playstore(!!!).....It has made multiple pocket calls on it's own. No kidding. I think I'm pressing the side button while slipping it into my pocket.
I ended up going with the Note 4 so far so good maybe I'll pick up an s5 to play with the roms in a few months
I was not happy with my AT&T S5 due to the locked bootloader. I am very happy with the TMO S5. Very customizable not toooo big, not too small. Doesn't lag, but gets a couple days of battery with medium use. Got a nice case and glass screen protector so it's pretty safe. Very dependable with Omega rom. What's not to love?

I am VERY pleased with my T-Mobile S5. It's my favorite phone I've owned thus far. I had the S3 before this and really liked that phone and also the Vibrant prior to that (which I was also pleased with). This is actually the 1st Galaxy phone that I've kept the TouchWiz base on though. I really enjoy the customization options on AOSP as well as the appearance, but I also enjoy the stability of KitKat TouchWiz base on this one (using XtreStoLite ROM by Edgar).
I like the Note 4 Specs, but it's just too big for me it wouldn't be comfortable in my pocket, and it's not like I wear skinny jeans either. Another nice luxury is the water resistance that the S5 offers, and the Note 4 does not. I hope that you enjoy your Note 4 though, best of luck!

Even at the end of the year, I still very much like my Galaxy S5. The reasons I purchased it are still completely valid for me, even with the release of the Note 4 as well as several competitor's phones. Part of the criteria is that while I have a larger display, it shouldn't be too much larger in overall footprint than my prior phone. This put it over the Note 3 as the Note 4 was not available at that time.
Couple feature notes:
1. Screen size/quality. Prior to the Note 4, the S5 was also Display mates "best display ever" report winner. The Super AMOLED display at 5.1" also had phenomenal color matching when the display settings are set to Cinema.
2. Camera. 16 megapixel ISO cell outperformed in daylight conditions and in my opinion eliminated the low light issues I had with the Galaxy S3. Note 4 has optical stabilization, so it's a better camera if this is your number one feature.
3. micro SD card. Important feature, I use it extensively to get the most out of my phone. Pictures, Music, Movies do not consume storage on the phone and some applications support installation to SD card.
4. Environmental protection. The S5 is IP67 against dust and water. While it's not water proof, I've started YouTube and thrown it into pitchers of water for 15 minutes or so for the brag factor. So the feared toilet dunk is not as much a concern as you can wash it with soap and water after retrieval.
5. Fingerprint reader. Yeah, it's not perfect but when properly trained, you'll find it works pretty well. I use it not only to unlock my phone, but in combination with Last Pass (has support for S5 fingerprint reader) and Pay Pal applications (fingerprint to pay). There are more on the way. Would be nice if Google adopted the API as a standard so that Google Wallet used it as well.
Pros:
Moving from one Samsung phone to another is extremely easy, especially with the use of the Kies software to backup your content/settings.
Excellent display quality over Galaxy Note 2.
Greatly improved camera.
USB transfers are faster at USB 3.0
Pretty close to waterproof.
Great audio with headphones.
Solid Bluetooth functionality.
Touch Wiz UI has been greatly reduced in footprint and is actually useful.
Great battery life and the ability to go Ultra for days of power.
Fingerprint reader is supported by several third party developers besides just Samsung apps.
Official Samsung Qi wireless charging options are available (charging back or S View wireless cover).
Numerous case options
Cons:
USB cover must be closed for IP67 waterproofing.
Wireless Qi Charging Back from Samsung makes the phone FAT.
Touch Wiz UI as memory/performance impact.
KNOX security has a "electronic fuse" that once tripped voids warranty. Flashing ROMs may trip that fuse if proper methods are not followed.
Fingerprint reader is not as accurate as desired.
Plastic build (low on issue meter as case hides this, other premium build phones have their metal hidden by cases so it's no big deal)
Even well over 8 months after release you'll find that the Galaxy S5 is a great challenger to even the latest released phones. Processor and Video performance are still incredible.
That said, there is rumors of the S6 coming sooner, depending on if you are willing to wait until March you may find the newer product has specs worth waiting for. But if you have to upgrade now, I believe the S5 will continue to be a solid workhorse for a few more years. Which is good, at $600 it's expensive to get every single generation point release. I skipped the S4 for example when waiting to upgrade from my S3.
New to the s5, maybe 2 mths. I had one a few mths ago but the lack of dev made me sell it and stay with my s4 for a few more mths. Then I came across another s5 and decided the best way to fall in love with it was to donate one to my fav developer. So if you want to fall in love with your s5 check out my man @The Sickness and his sick and twisted rom....trust me you will be in love with it as i am. Support on the rom is far one of the best in my opinion, all due respect to all other threads.

I've had the 6p for about A year and a half basically since it came out. Think it's about that time to hang up it's cape this screen burn-in is really annoying me and that outdated processor is starting to show it's age. Would love to hear everyone's opinion on their next phone. I was thinking about the Pixel 2 myself if priced fairly ,or maybe the Note 8 , or the upcoming Essential Phone .
the nexus 6p has taught me how greatly important it is for phones to have a removable battery. I not will pay another $550+ for a smartphone, only to barely get 2 hours of SOT after a year of using it. I really hate planned obsolescence. I am trying to find a high end phone with removable battery other than LG ( bootloop ). But I think it's hard to find one in 2017 and later.
The pixel 2 will not be priced fairly. I would go for the note 8 if money is not an issue or the next oneplus

I'm not getting rid of my 6p until i have to. Best phone I've ever had. The only reason people have bad battery life is because your battery is getting old, deal with it, replace it and your good to go again. Just like ANY OTHER sealed phone eventually. Anyone who complains about the processor being outdated as well just wants to justify getting a new phone for no reason IMHO. I haven't found anything yet that will tax my processor enough to have to get something new. Even if my 6p gives up the ghost for good, I'll probably buy another used one to replace it rather than spending insane amounts of money on something new and "improved"

Give it time, his battery will give out one day to. EVERYTHING has a life span.
I just got an RMA so I'll likely keep it awhile. Depends on my luck of the draw with the replacement. If it sucks I'll grab the Oneplus 5 or note.
I doubt we see removable batteries in any higher end device again. Companies claim design but reality is most of these phones aren't water proof and planned obsolesce especially now that device upgrades really aren't necessary every year is a powerful motivator. Unless of course you got a lemon that shuts off at 30% or gets 2 hours SOT or plain doesn't boot after a year or so. I'm hesitant to buy another nexus / pixel after my 6p and 5x.
It's really hard for me not to get an s8 right now.

Looks like I'll be keeping my 6p for a while still. The battery life my not be top notch, but I get 4 to 5 hours of screen on time regularly, which is enough for me, especially when I can charge it for 0-100% in like 1.5 hours. My biggest hold up on an upgrade is I demand stereo front facing speakers, a good camera (which the 6p has when using the modded camera nx app), and a no bull**** as close to stock os as possible. The Pixel ticked all those boxes expect stereo front facing speakers so I passed on it, and it doesn't look like the Pixel 2 will be any different.
Honestly the design, speakers and the price of the pixel killed it for me , that phone looks horrible honestly there's nothing on the market right now that i would wanna pick up except the s8+ and that's pushing it because I only love using stock Android. Boy oh boy if they had an s8+ with stock Android with regular timely updates .... lol in a perfect world.

That having been said, this week I purchased a $299 Moto G5 Plus (64GB/4GB) for someone, and I'm super impressed with quality and speed. Bluetooth and software is a little wonky, last security update was January, hoping for a ROM update, but since it's Moto G, probably not gonna get many updates. Honestly, if it were a Nexus release, I'd be super happy with it, as the hardware is great.

I picked up a new Moto Z on Verizon for $300 (for my wife).
Great phone if you can tolerate a locked bootloader.
Pixel 2, OnePlus 5 or Essential. Considering all of them
The Essential is out of the question for me. I like to take pictures, and the quality of the pictures I've seen from that phone are not that great of quality.
I'm looking at the OnePlus 5. The samples from them have been a heck of a lot better. I've been checking out the 3T forums to see what kind of roms are offered and its not bad looking at all. I'm going to get the 5 and sell my 6p on Swappa. I just hope it has the horizontal dual camera.
Not the iPlus 5 anymore. The OnePlus 5 with a copycat iPhone 7 style is so sad. And with only a small 3,000mAh battery. Screw that.
I switched to an iPhone 7+ last month and couldn't be more pleased. Tried to hold out until the iPhone 8 came out but the 6P was becoming too awful to be a daily driver for me. Lag lag and more lag whenever it is asked to do anything but the simplest of tasks. Then it heats up and throttles creating even more lag and drains the battery. But the main reason for me abandoning ship was because of my DJI Mavic Pro. Nougat and DJI Go 4 don't mix... I'm still keeping the 6P because it used to be a great phone but somewhere along the line, Google ruined it probably in hopes that we would switch to Pixel. Well I switched alright and probably for good! With iOS, everything just works. Only bad part is there's not a community like XDA Developers. Which is why I'm trolling the forums with my 6P lol.

My Mi Max 2 arrived two days ago, i'm really really happy, battery lasts two days with strong use, and everything is smooth. It was not so easy to go through the unlock procedure but now i'm done.

How does it compare to your old note 4? I have a note 2 that is just about completely dead and hope for a sizeable jump - my only real worry is camera quality.

Me too, i want to know as my note 4 is failing and would like to upgrade
I've a Note 3 running Resurrection rom. Just got this last Friday and love the bigger screen, I remember getting the note 1 and nobody could believe the size, and now the note 3 is just about average, lol. Anyways I'll be missing the stylus and removable battery, but other than that it seems good. Just waiting for the 72 hrs to pass so that I can root and unlock the thing. For less than half the price of a Note 8 and the same price here as a second-hand several year old note 4 I don't think you can do wrong.

Buddy, How is the screen quality conpared to the note 3?
It's amoled vs lcd / 380dpi vs 344dpi. Im really considering this one or the LG V20?
Is it too big for pockets?
Screen seems ok to me, it's not as vivid but wil do the job browsing and reading pdfs which is my main use. I've thousands of photos too and they seem ok. Sizewise it's longer and sticks out a little bit from my pockets but not enough to bother me.
I am in love with this device, But bit disappointing with MIUI which uses more ram. Waiting for stable custom rom.:fingers-crossed:
I have a Redmi Note 3. I'm looking for a larger phone. My mom wants to take my Redmi once I get a new phone.
My only concern with this phone is custom ROM support as I don't like using MIUI. Are the chances this will be supported by LineageOS officialy sometime soon? (Mi Max 1 seems to have great custom ROM support). If yes, I'll be buying this phone right away.
Also, I'm confused. Some pages mention this phone has NFC and some don't. Does it have NFC. Doesn't affect my descision to buy this phone but still.

Yes, only thing I'm missing is the picture quality from Samsung, even though it was very much slower to focus, noticed specially when scanning bar codes. In very dark envioment it can be seen that it has ips screen and not amoled. But it cost 1/5 of a new Samsung Note, so i don't care. Specially since my Note4 failed with the "mmc_failed" error after 2 years, and Samsung wont emit it's a production failure.

i have both Mi Max 1 and 2
Decent but the lack of multi color LED notification is a big downer.
Battery was awesome

I got the phone cheap $229 4/64 (it was 199 yesterday at Gearbest). TOTAL LOVE. Perfect build quality. Fast. Gets a great signal on AT&T (the only signal in my neighborhood). Better than my Samsung despite AT&T's claims it would barely work at all. Yes, it says H+ on the display instead of 4g, but I suspect I was getting H+ already, marketed as 4g, which is what they do in the states.
What's more, I'm getting Volte now with AT&T prepaid -- prepaid customers don't get Volte! (Not that it's much use with this carrier).
In call volume is fine and the speaker quality is great. It wasn't loaded with crapware and unrooted, I was able to disable some system apps (some apps, like the calculator, are terrific).
Regarding the battery: I got a lemon. It's lasting a full day, maybe a day and a half -- but I'm a light user! No gaming, not even online much. I don't run anything except for downloaded audiobooks. But it goes to show you how much I love the phone that I wouldn't even consider sending it back for warranty service. All the way to China? I'd be without it for days, maybe weeks!
It's not perfect. I can't believe TV out is missing -- no way to connect to a monitor with OTG, no matter how many adaptors you use, I'm told. And Xiaomi's firmware prevents you from doing full backups or downloading nonessential updates unless you're on wifi. They claim you can toggle this, but they're sneaky buggers ... you toggle, it says downloading, but when you look for the completed file it says 'scheduled'. I *****ed and moaned in the forum, but hundreds have cried before me, to no avail.
There are a few odd little paternalistic issues with the OS -- not that ATT and Samsung don't dictate what I can do with my device and service -- they're a thousand times worse -- but their preferred forms of control are motivated by profit, not concern for what's 'good' for me. What do they care if I guzzle data?
On the other hand, Xiaomi employees actually monitor the forums. After the major software update, they solicited bug reports and issued fixes for them in a couple of days -- even for the minor bugs.
On a 1 to 10 scale, the phone is a 20, and I'm thrilled to learn they have a wide range of electronics to check out because -- so long Samsung, you suckered this consumer for the last time.
I do love Xiaomi Mi Max 2 except one thing. I can't unlock bootloader on MIUI 9 Global Stable, I get the error 86006 (with some Chinese letters). I know that it can be fixed by flashing on developper rom but I would like to get it fixed without flashing the device.

Yep, I had the same problem. I don't understand why Xiaomi does this.
I ended up giving in and installed a fresh dev ROM and then it worked perfectly.
Loving mine in Canada. I am a heavy user minus gaming(unless you count Scrabble) and I get 2 full days on a charge consistently. I stream sports and movies onto it, lots of music and other normal surfing/social media stuff and it doesn't get hot and the battery just keeps on going. It's early but so far I would definitely recommend the phone and the company. Excellent build quality and attention to detail. This phone was made with me in mind

I know people with the S8 and the S8+ and let me tell you the Note8 is Superior to both of those phones. Number one the build quality and the looks. The Note8 looks and feels like a more premium phone than the S8 and the +. The S8 and especially the + feels like something is missing inside of them. The Note8 is solid. Then the Note8 has a bigger and brighter screen than the S8 and +. Then it just plain looks sexier than those two. Then the Note8 has software the other 2 don't have. Then we go to the Spen that's a point all by itself!!! So these crack pots making these videos are crazy. But everyone has their own opinions. But that does not mean they are right. I agree 100%, like when I had to 'settle' for an s7edge after owning a Note7, there was no comparison. The Notes have always been superior in my mind...

I was in the same boat as you. Treated myself to Note8 and never looked back. The display is absolutely breathtaking and that in itself is a unique selling point for me. Even though i have been using the phone for almost 2 weeks now, everytime i look at the display, it takes my breath away. S pen is a hit or a miss for me. It's not the practicalities which stop me from using it. More like, i forget it's there ?.
Also, this is my first Android phone which i will not be rooting. Samsung pay has spoilt me.
I've had s8n, s8+ and note 8...ill take the s pen and 6 gb of ram... My. S8+ always got 5.5 hours screen time, note Rarely over 4.5...note for the win

ive already ordered my Pixel xl 2 for $900 black because the black ships in 2 to 3 weeks and its in stock. the white looks better but is 4 to 6 weeks away and i emotionally couldn't wait that long.
But ive also been very interested in sm-n955f and have been debating on cancelling my pixel xl 2 order and go after a note 8 international f version. theyre priced similarly .
the only thing i want is to have freedom over my device with custom recoveries custom roms substratum with definite root and unlockable bootloader. if the 955f rom development opens up and gets growin thats my queue.

This literally has nothing to do with this thread topic. The OP is questioning why reviewers don't seem to value the key differences between the S8+ and the Note8, which is baffling to us Note8 users.
I agree with you, OP. I wouldn't even buy an S8+. For me right now, if I wasn't allowed to buy this phone, it'd be the Pixel XL 2 or LG V30. Only after those being taken away as options would I consider the S8+. This phone having the RAM boost for unparalleled multi-tasking ability and the s-pen are HUGE differences. If the s-pen was a modular add-on for any phone, I'd always buy it and I'd probably pay $200 for the s-pen abilities. So the gap in price between the S8+ and Note 8 is easily worth it to me.

I hear ya. I was a die hard Nexus user. When they went to pixel it just did not do it for me. I do not like the way the phones look. I will admit the pixel 2 XL does look better. But the Note 8 looks way better to me. I do miss all the development on Googles phones. But as I have gotten older I don't see myself flashing all these roms like I use to. I would like root and a couple of things. But until Google makes another Nexus I will stick with the Note. Nexus to me was like a pro phone. The Pixel looks like they made it for the average Joe. I liked having something special.
I dont see the point in comparing apples with oranges? I see these reviews and most of them baffle me.
There are four superb Samsung Galaxy S8 series mobiles, the 8, 8+ the (forgot the bloomin name) and the Note. All four have there market share, all four serve a given need and they are not comparable.
Identical situation with cars. Merc class C will come in coupe, saloon and cabriolet even more types.... One is not better than the other all are good cars and all will serve their niche in the market.
I have no idea why we see the Note 8 being compared or versed against other mobiles? There is no other mobile like the Note series. Not my fault don't shoot the messenger. We own a particular type, brand and style of mobile that's unique in this marker sector. As for comparing the Note 8 with non Android mobiles such as Windows and IOS it becomes even more absurd.
I find the note range in the past few iterations to be fabulous micro PC's. Incredible devices and those who don't make use of that S-pen are truly missing the point. The S-pen is not the cherry on the top its the cake. :good:

I'm past troubleshooting roms.Samsung has matured to the point where root hurts more than it helps. I'll keep my Samsung pay and stable OS. Tethered to a Frontier,Samsung ecosystem is decades ahead of the competition.

For some reason, people always feel that they have to justify to the public why their phone is better than your phone; I mean who really cares what someone else thinks about your phone, your car, your clothes, what ever; I miss the days when being an individual was more important that being like "everyone else"..
I've had at least 50 cell phones in my life, and the last few were alot of fun; nexus 6, huawei mate 9 pro, S7 edge, and frankly, this note 8 is probably the best all around phone I have had so far..dont care about rooting any more, but probably will once its perfected and the BL is unlocked, if it ever is, but, that being said, the truth is that NO CELL PHONE is worth 1000 dollars, this one included..but, if you are going to overpay for a cell phone, this one is probably the one you should pop for

Your last sentence is where we differ. I am unsure how one can write that no mobile is worth 1k€? I know its an awful lot of cash and I know it makes ones eyes water BUT in the case of the Note 8 have you any idea how complex this mobile is to design then produce? The R&D must cost tens of millions alone. Write a list of the accomplishments the Note 8 covers and its incredible.
In way of comparison. in 2000 my Toshiba Satellite 2800-100 lap top cost 1,500.00€. Celeron 650MHz processor. 6GB hard drive. 64Mb sdram ram memory. It weighed about 3kg. In 2000 it was cutting edge technology! 17 years later we have micro engineered a device that is just chalk and cheese in terms of value, cost and tech'.
In 1989 my NEC 11A 'mobile phone' cost £320.00(?) and only made and answered calls and wow was each call expensive. Its relative and accept it or not over the years the technology has developed at break neck pace yet the prices have dropped.
I paid last year for the Note 7 887.00€ (twice, enough on that already). This year I paid 1,020.00€! That's a rise of 133.00€ in 12 months to maintain this cutting edge technology. Does the Note 8 warrant that 133.00€ price increase? I would say without a doubt yes but it is subjective and open to debate. :good:
In theory by 2020 we could be looking to pay for the Note 11 1,500.00€ or more! Goodness knows when this technology will level out and reach a point where totally new technology will reach a plateau? For sure unless the science of battery power changes the next generation of uber mobiles may only function for an hour sans a recharge or be the size of my 1989 NEC 11A!
The Note series started a revolution in the mobile market. I recall when it hit the stores there was hardly a positive review as most reviewers said the device was too big and the trend would never catch on and indeed I DID feel self conscious when using the Note 1 in public. The rest is history.
Now if you truly desire a debate on the value of a device talk Apple. There latest iPhone 8 is a literal disgrace in 'modern technology' and the price -v- value is absurd by any standards. The iPhone 8+ is a better buy but still lags behind the rest yet millions and millions buy them? I suspect just for the brand? That's crazy. :silly:

I think that all those videos or articles about questioning if the note 8 is worth the money it costs over the s8 or v30, etc. Are simply based on the fact that the authors of such videos or articles do not really apreciate what a samsung galaxy note is ! I believe that most of us that love the s pen features and "boxy" body style , will NEVER look back to any other s pen less phone
If the PEN means nothing to you.. get the S8+. me .. I LOVE the PEN!
I had a note 1 and 2, and a 4, then got tired of touch jizz, and moved on to other stuff; got a note 8 after being bored with my mate 9 pro, and realizing the nexus 6 was long in the tooth..
As far as 1000 being too much for a phone, I spent many years in the consumer electronics marketplace, and I know the more the technology matures, the lower costs actually go; not that I expect ANY electronics mfg to lower prices on newer models, although if you look at t he prices of 4k tv's now, versus 3 years ago, you will understand what I mean about costs to produce dropping as time goes by; the reason phone mfgs keep raising prices is to keep consumers thinking their phones have newer and greater stuff in them every year, but, believe me, the cost to mfg these phones either stays stable or goes down over time..
anyways, we all decide what we are willing to pay for stuff, so the market forces dictate what mfgs charge; if people stopped buying apple crapple, they would lower their prices too, since they use the lowest cost labor in the world, and their raw materials are nothing to get excited about; they sell the sizzle, NOT the steak!!
I keep hearing about the Spen? If you don't use the Spen get the S8+? I do use my Spen everyday. But if I did not use it I would still choose the Note8. It's just a better all around phone than the S8+.
I was using an s8 before this and I don't use the spen at all..but trust me ..this is an awesome phone and YES very very much worth it
Samsung's user-friendly -20% battery approach to root is pretty bold. As a customer I find it quite heinous. Can't keep a backup battery around.
No physical buttons. In landscape mode it is very annoying and changing the automatic hide disorients the function of multiple apps in either direction
ir blaster. and idk if anyone else has this problem but the thinner s pen. I've broken 4 befween my fingers so no more s pen. What is the.major improvement here? The phone is a step backwards.
It would be one thing if I got my hopes up a little but the Note 8 has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I feel like I screwed honestly.
If they want to keep removing features and locking the phone down then forget it, i'll buy a hawawaie and China can have my data instead. With some of the google stuff coming out lately I think id rather give it to them anyway. What bloat do they preinstall? Yandex? beats facebook and carrier-iq. Not planning on moving there any time soon either and last time I checked no three letter organisations are contracting with the Chinese government
The root part is what made the note 8 pretty useless to me as a device. I would sell it and get a op5t or 2xl if you care about root.

I went with a SM-N950N (Korean Note 8) to have root
Same here, got me an Exynos N950F to have root. First time I have ever purchased an international phone (for Android anyway) & probably will never buy a US Samsung so long as they keep using locked down Snapdragon. Sure Snapdragon has root but no TWRP & 80% charging s not going to cut it for me.

I had a N920T T-Mobile USA Note 5, the last Exynos Samsung for the US. Once I heard S7 had locked bootloaders, I knew I would have to buy International/Exynos from going forward. Sucks having to do so initially but more than well worth it for me, couldn't be happier.
With all that's provided today by Android, I almost see no reason for root.
And it's quite odd to have broken 4 S-Pens. That's about $100 in value dropped like that. But the whole no physical button is not enough of a reason to hate the Note 8 at all. Samsung was just finally becoming part of the Android lineup that's how it's supposed to function. The Physical home button gives me some anxiety to see scratches on it no matter how much I protect it.
I went from Note 3 to Note 7, back to a used Note 4, and now the Note 8 for the last 6 months. I'm not rooted and I really don't miss root for much. Battery life is pretty amazing on the Note 8. I like Samsung UI, so with the Note 3 & 4 I always stuck with touchwiz roms. It's nice having a more current version of Android with the Samsung Experience. The Note 8's not perfect, but I definitely don't miss the Note 4.

Sucks for u. I came from a fully modded note 4 that I had since launch day and the n8 not rooted blows the n4 away. Battery life, speed, themes, screen. Idk what else u want from a phone, and this is coming from someone who made a anti-note 5 Facebook because of the features lost from the 4 to the 5. Btw, you guys are welcome for getting the sd card back??. And yeah I missed the ir blaster for about 2 days. That's it though, it was seriously no big deal at all. And u can debloat without root. As far as backups, helium works great. And for viper audio...... Just poweramp alpha build with hi-res sounds better on my system than with viper anyways. And what are u seriously doing to ur spens??? 4 really, I never broke 1. If you ever had the n5, I have a feeling the spen got put in backwards as well...

If someone complains about 80% batt after root, no physical buttons, locked bootloader no IR blaster among other issues, frankly, why did you buy a note 8? Bob bobbled, how did you managed the increadible feat of breaking 4 spens?, as an informed android user you seem to be, I think that all your complains you make are long known facts, snapdragons beeing troublesome for rooting, ir blaster now dropped, physical buttons only in active versions or low level devices, 4 spen broken? C'mon, the spens are not the problem, but how they are handled, next time, better get all the pertinent info before buying, or, as you said, get a huawei or something like it, but, you will see, sooner or later, that those devices have many issues that ultimately you will not like, believe me

I think OP means they have broken fingers so thinner S-Pen is harder and virtually impossible to use
I upgrade from my N910C to a N950N due to the fact that my N910C was starting to drop LTE signals randomly. I have to say I am loving my N950N. It is probably my best purchase of the year. I thought that I would hate not havinv physical buttons. But I quickly gotten use to having soft buttons. Not having a removable battery is my main grip with the latest Samsung devices. But I can easily get 2 days battery life out of my N950N with moderate use. I haven't notice any performance issues since the upgrade to Oreo. Performance has been butterly smoothy. I love the iris scanner, it even works in direct sunlight. The placement of the fingerprint scanner is not as bad as I thought it would be.
Seriously 4 S-pens? man the 2nd pen break must have made u smarter. I have used all the Notes except 2 & 7(they stopped the launch in India)
Never broken a pen, a tip damaged due to dropping it, but never broken, and even on the Note 5, never inserted it the wrong way. And I am a very prolific user of the S-Pen.
The battery isnt so bad, ofcourse would appreciate better life, but thats a not a deal breaker. And also the physical buttons, never really missed them, since the Tab series really lost them in 2012.
I would say that Note 8 Exynos rooted and Dr.Ketan Rom+Pro Tweaks is the optimal combo imo. Everything is optimized, battery is great, no bloatware..... etc etc etc
I too have made the leap from a N910a to the note 8. Being that I'm coming from the notorious "you'll never get root on our phone, EVER" from AT&T having root PERIOD was a game changer. With that said, I do miss the IR blaster although alot of the time I'd forget it was there lol. I had my note 4 for nearly 3 years - longest I've ever had a phone and not had something happen i.e. dropping it.
So root was a HUGE deal for me to have, so I may be a bit biased in that area but as others have touched on, for real how did you manage to break not 1, not 2, or 3 but FOUR spens?! If it were 1 I'd say contact them for possibly poor workmanship, no offense but it seems like it's on the user end in this instance. As far as features the Note 8 has root aside, waterproof (or water RESISTANT as it technically really is lol) Another game changer. For over a year I had no working speaker due to having just moving into new apt and first night using it as Hotspot I had no idea sprinklers came on and shat water onto my rear patio. My own fault, but nonetheless very VERY comforting knowing if I ever screwed up in that area, it wouldn't be an issue. That alone with all our own user end mishaps is arguably a MUST HAVE.
The 80 pct limit isn't really that bad, if you must charge it to 100 pct there is always the download mode workaround, but if we are taking straight user friendliness,I could see it being a thing to do it everytime one charged. Raw power over the note 4 is and has to be something that anyone would notice immediately. I have a gear vr and while the note 4 fit, it always was outperformed by my note 8 when I tested them back to back.
I DO miss the removable battery (price to pay for water resistance I suppose) and am not looking forward to when it starts to show signs of aging and needs replaced. There are options I've found that help, like a portable power bank. Although with my use I really don't see much of a difference between when I was stock compared to now, so that wasn't and isn't anything I ever complain about knowing up front that was the price of admission if I wanted root. I still have my note 4 but honestly it just sits along side of my other devices of yesteryear collecting dust.

So you can root the Note 8? (US version or only international vesion?) and rooting limits battery to 80% only?
You can root both models, but with snapdragons, the batt only charges up to 80%, I read about this here XDA, I dont know if there is some patch or workaround for it, as I have an stock Exynos 950F 128GB
