When do you think LG will roll out Android Pie? - LG V30 Questions & Answers

Well, Google has officially gave Android 9 a name. Pie. And starting to roll out to Pixel 2 and Essential phones. When do you think LG will roll it out to us V30 owner?

Next year in may-july. If we're lucky

I'd bet that the V30 will get Pie via AOSP before LG drops an official build.

No sooner than April 2019

That's kinda obvious here, considering SGCMarcus said he'll look into Pie once it's out.

The 2017 V30 getting 2018 Pie is the same situation as the 2016 V20 getting 2017 Oreo.
Tell me when V20 gets Oreo and that's the same time next year V30 gets Pie. No, they don't have it yet. Rumored in September.

"Android Enterprise Recommended" haha - would be funny,
if it weren't sad ... again
Looks like Google included too many ambiguities/uncertainties for the conditions:
Security update support
90-day security updates

no details on that,
if LG keeps on pushing "security updates" within every 90 days but stays on previous patch levels - is that matching the demands/specifications ?

No, we're promised one letter OS upgrade for being in the Recommended program. But it doesn't say WHEN.
Other than that, I see lots of details:

I am gonna be cynical here and say figure the friggin odds.

I sold my Essential Phone to move to my V30+. I can't believe Essential got 9 on day 1!
I know I'm not really missing anything, but I likely need to be a Pixel person just for piece of mind on updates.

Syncing AOSP atm, but will have todo blind tests because my V30 is in repair :/
In the meanwhile, someone could try the full, source built GSIs that are flying around in Telegram xD

We got an even earlier release this year actually, that oreo last year.
And LG now got their "Software Center" (hahahaha, good joke, i know). I'm guessing something like beginning/end of december for the P update for the V40/G7 and sometimes around April or so for the V30.
Even though LG should have had access to the source code for months already (like every big manufacturer out there).
Yesterday I asked the LG Austria support on facebook when we can expect the update (also asked for the G7 because of a friend). In the past they were really nice (I asked when the Oreo update for the H930 would release, and they didnt know, but a bit over a month later i suddenly got a message from them, that the update is available).

Could you provide a link to that telegram?

If I could get any decent reception with essential phone I couldn't have sold it months ago. Would get 0 bars in random places I would go.
I don't expect pie for v30 anytime soon.

hmm... atleast it boots
did you flash all 3 sGSI zips? or which ones (im kinda out of date whats up to date there)
What about RIL? does it force reboot to recovery when you have a sim inserted?
But im compiling AOSP now anyway, for the V30. ~70% done at the moment im writing this. Hope it continues without errors lol
Gonna hand that out to my testers later on when its done, as i cant test myself currently (V30 is in repair, display broken after i fell with my bike, but atleast the glass and all wasnt damaged xD)

No, i took the GSI from the Telegram group, one dude posted a small guide, telling us to flash the P AOSP system image, then JUST the sGSI3 zip and a small zip he made himself apparently.
#Edit: lets not forget our beloved vibrator, which you already made a zip for
RIL works but you need to add APN manually, Wifi isn't working and im not too sure about the camera, it seems to not work or the Camera app doesn't want to work.
(Ahem - I'd be open for testin)

Ohhhh, nice
the third zip patches the boot.img and swaps out the ramdisk to the new P init stuff which is needed.
Yeah, for vibrator.... LGs implementation (which i currently use as normal AOSP doesnt work) reads a property from build prop, and if android version is >8 it wont work lol
but changing that (again) is for now low priority
First i wanna see if the build even boots (after i fixed all compilation errors)
Just hit me up on telegram if youre interested to test ^^

Yeah I saw that.
I got used to the dull vibrator so, not too much of abother for me now.

Its not about being dull, its about not working at all then xD
It just "spams" the log then with basically "unsupported android version, only compatible up to [8]" or so lol
The dullness has been fixed ^^

Disgusting treatment of EU Axon 7 users

Hi,
Some really bad news for anyone that's been unfortunate enough to purchase an A7 EU version.
I have contacted ZTEUK on FB messenger directly to ask about the Nougat update and this is their exact response.
"Hi Mike, Please keep an eye out on our social channels for any information regarding updates. We do not currently have plans to update to Nougat though this may change. Thanks, the ZTE UK team."
Taking into account the amount of EU phones out there this is beyond dreadful in terms of treatment, the question is, where do we go from here? I didn't want to bother rooting the phone, but is there any option left now it's possibly not getting the update at all?
No daydream, no patch fixes, no volume fix, the list goes on!!
How do we pressure ZTE into dealing with this, failing that what other options do we have?
Mike
Haha I doubt it, these customer reps have no idea.
There has been an extensive Nougat test going on as well as confirmations on twitter etc.
G Version will get Nougat.

I hope so, that brings some comfort, really the reps should not give throw away replies like that.
Thanks :good:
Don't worry, it just furthers the idea that global organization of ZTE is totally lacking, especially for their EU customers (far behind their american ones). Nougat was announced first by ZTE Germany back in November (originally planned for end of january) and is currently undergoing beta testing as far as I know. The thing is, ZTE Germany is apparently taking care of the dev for the G version but they officially supports only german customers, even if they kinda tried to create an "european" community. Other european branches (it's the case for ZTE france at least) of ZTE seem to be only PR posting advertisement on facebook/twitter. IMO, your rep just copy pasted the basic stonewalling response to this question and has either no information whatsoever or wanted to answer politely without getting carried away.
(If anyone has more info, feel free to correct me)
G Variant will sure get the Nougat Update soon, ZTE UK should know this too dont know why you got this answer from them. But if you G Variant user, follow ZTE Mobile Deutschland on Facebook
Coming from US nougat. There's still bugs, battery drain, etc. Issues that are in the release. I'd rather be back in MM honestly. A stable and complete release would've been better instead of releasing early due to demand. Just look up the issue with whatsapp. Millions of users and they didn't notice such a glaring bug.
I can say without a doubt in my mind that the Axon 2017G will also get Nougat. They are usually a little behind the US team with releases so I imagine it will probably be sometime in March
I wouldn't be surprised if you could just flash the bootstack and modem from LineageOS thread and flash A2017U system on top. I'm totally satisfied with LineageOS, so I'm not even thinking on doing that now or in the future.
The G Variant needs more time than us because they want to fix all founded bugs and increase the quality. like musicdjm said, it will release end feb. or beginning of march. zte could Release it in the end of January but there were too many bug, because of that they started a beta test phase and postponed the Release date

I have the US ZTE Axon 7 (A2017U) and updated to Nougat. What is the WhatsApp bug again? I haven't noticed anything but you can tell me and I will cry in a corner once I know. :crying:
@op When everything else fails, go to change.org and create a petition. The ASUS Zenfone 2 users did that and they are apparently getting the Nougat update in July.

The Axon7 G Variant will directly get 7.1.1

Still no sign of Note8 beta + Samsung uses IMEI check. So unless You have UK IMEI, there's no way of getting Beta

Update 10:47am: I found a way to cheat Samsungs location detection, so that they will think that You are in UK.
I will post guide in my group once beta goes live.
Why in my group only? To avoid Samsung from reading XDA and patching it!

Update 9am: Samsung announced Oreo Beta for S8.
https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-experience-9-0-beta-now-available
Still no sign of Note8 Oreo(other than fota servers)
Oreo Beta for S8 should be coming out around 4-6pm(European time/German time) today.
I was thinking the same thing when I saw the news about the s8. You would think we would have gotten it first considering this is Samsung's latest flagship.

Q: will it only be to selected people in the UK or as long as you have ran this command you have access too? (when it goes live i mean)

you have adb installed?
just plug your phone in and open cmd from adb folder and type
adb shell
then copy and paste the command
tip - you can right click in CMD and paste (ctrl=V does not work in CMD)

Yup. Seems like Samsung didn't want to recompense for Note7 fail and they only launched Oreo for S8. Note8 users will have to wait till 2018Q1 to get Oreo. What a joke.
I tried porting S8 Oreo to Note8 but there's too much BIG stuff that isn't compatible. There's a chance that Note8 will get Oreo at the end of this month and this beta will be available for most people in Europe. But I feel like Samsung really did leave us.
Quick update: Note8 most likely won't get Oreo beta anymore. So we will have to wait till January/February to get Oreo.
In the meantime I've tried porting Oreo couple of times. New betas etc. But none of them booted. After somehow "porting" the kernel from S8 it still doesn't boot. I managed to reach bootanimation but then it just bootloops. And it wouldn't be that bad but.. logcat just doesn't want to work. So I can't even check what's breaking the boot.
It's December already so I guess we can just wait another 2 months yay.. It's pretty sad to use Nougat which came out almost 2 years ago.

Can You just LEAVE me alone?
Thank You.
Btw, Note 5 got beta, Note 7 was recalled so obviously no beta, so Note 8 should get beta as well. But it seems like You're deciding for Samsung which device should get beta and which one shouldn't.
Edit: Added You to ignore list so I won't be able to see Your messages anymore. Find someone else to be mean to .
Also, at least I'm spending a lot of hours trying to port Oreo to our devices because there are 100s of people waiting for it, even my users are asking about it. And You're just saying "STOP WHINING!" "NOTE 8 WON'T GET OREO BETA!!" . It doesn't really help anyone. Instead of being mean You could help me and other devs with porting Oreo. We just need someone with reverse engineering skills and smali/assembler knowledge.
Oh and why not just wait for official release? 3 reasons.
1. It will take at least 2 more months to get official Oreo(Depends on region too).
2. Porting roms is a lot of fun and gives me a lot of new knowledge.
3. I have cancer and other health problems and I can't wait. Tomorrow I might die or in 2 days or in a week or a month or a year. And my blood results are getting worse so if I can do something about Oreo then I will.
Some of us REALLY can't wait .

11I New update for Vodafone italian H870

Hi guys, as reported on the vodafone italian forum this week has been released a new update for G6, now is available trough LGBridge (didn't check trough OTA).
Don't which patch are, or if there are any difference because "Bridge is a Britch" (Sorry), and it'll take a while to download the entire KDZ of 3.04GB.
I'll keep you updated about possible changes, cheers

That's not so important for two major reasons:
- 821 is not vulnerable to Meltdown
- Spectre is a vulnerability that cannot be soft-patched, patches are only to block some applications of Spectre.
Anyway they're still better than December patch xD
in any case g6 no brand ita no update of the patches at the moment, nor through ota or lg bridge,in any case if I have the chance to sell the g6 and I'll take another.

Yeah... But you see that is only ninja smoke... This is did to forget for a while about android 8.0 update... And also my humble opinion is that this security update don't matter. And keep in mind if someone with the right know how wants to find an exploit to access your phones it will be done...

It's not ninja smoke, it's what LG should have done since ever like other OEMs, realising updates frequently. No one forgot the late 8.0 update, i am (and probably all) angry with LG for late Major updates without any right excuse (like introducing treble, for example).
Also security patch are important when there are RELEASED vulnerability that allows anyone with the right abilities to steal your data, your money or whatever else, like the Krack vulnerability, which is KNOWN since november and patched in december and we received the update now.
I see much negativity coming from you, you're right, if an hacker wants your data will probably get those anyway, but the probability is low like many other scenarios.
To sum up:
- I'm happy to have received a new update
- I'm happy that my device is more secure
- I'm UNhappy that LG won't update the G6 soon to Oreo.
That's all for me =)

My opinion is that most of us, here we've got our phones rooted and we also have a bunch of apps that can be manipulateed to gain access in our phones and in my opinion, for me is not so much of LG work but for the work of developers here that patch the systems and kernels and apps that we use daily. My current negativity through all the talk here, about this patch is regarding the pressure on developers to upgrade their work. And I know that none ask for the exact date of upgrade, but some people pointed out the release of the patch and wanted a new upgrade... So this seems to me a bit rude... I don't want to fight with anyone... But I needed to express my thoughts. Have a good one guys and enjoy a great device

Devs here on XDA do this because they like doing it, that's why it's not correct to press them for updates. But OEMs devs are different, they're paid for what they're doing like my boss pay me for the work i do, and he expect me to do my best. Here it's LG fault (concerning the both lack of updates between July and December and Oreo) because other OEMs have already updated their flagship devices, and some also their medium range devices.
I never press devs of apps, mods, kernel or ROMs because they make me a favor. I press OEMs' devs because they're paid for what they're doing, and because all other OEM's devs are doing a better job.
Hope i've been more clear, there is no reason to fight, we're discussing our own ideas, i'm not angry with you only because you expressed your thoughts
Why is this maj only available via computer? Will she be available later in Ota?
I do not have a computer

Someone have the kdz unbrand? I'm with a brand Tim g6 till on july patch, it's time to manually update.

Oreo kernel source code is here

https://opensource.ztedevices.com/
It's only for the 2017U for now though. Can this be used to benefit the 2017G?
Finally. Hopefully developers can actually fix the battery life problem by looking at the direct source code of the kernel. Unfortunately now that it is open source this means the Axon 7 is going to lose support very soon in the upcoming months
edit: i've uploaded the kernel source to github here: https://github.com/pimpinpsp/Axon7OreoKernel-A2017U

The Linux kernel source must be published, as far is open source, it doesn't mean that ZTE will stop develppment and support.

That's right, my mistake. But the device is at the end of its life and so it is good timing to publish it now
We won't see Pie for Axon 7, probably not even 8.1 officially. Maybe a security update or two if we're lucky.
Look forward to Oreo for G to be released and then sources so devs may make a bugless ROM that will get updates and maybe extend to Pie.
I am a bit puzzled by ZTE's choice to delay the G Oreo release. I wonder if they plan to do any additional modifications compared to the USA build.

I talked to the german Facebook group from zte last week thursday.
(Attached a screenshot)
Here is all the info in a nutshell (in order of the fb messages):
-Update will start to roll out this week via ota (meaning this very week that started yesterday)
-A little confused (since us version had to install via sdcard) i asked to make sure if its really being rolled out via ota.
Yes, it will be rolled out via ota. Of course not everyone will get the update at the same time. It could stretch out to 2 weeks until everyone gets it. The European version will will be different from the US version
And as for why its still not out for us yet, they said it takes longer because they gotta make sure all european languages are supported.
Last thing i asked about (since they said different version than the US one) was if we get stock+ ui as well or if its mifavor.
Their response: "current info: stock+ ui"
PS: sorry about the late post. I originally planned to post about this on the weekend but forgot about it.

What is now up-to-date with Oreo for the axon 7, (A2017G)?
Hi Christopher, we are dying with the update that will be started next week, to be played out ZTE via OTA. Love, your ZTE team
' about OTA? the U.S. has model Yes already oreo ^
get with the new floor + UL.
There, however, the user must install the update via sdcard.
will this then not the same at the A2017G
Text Box: LJ
case be?
No, the updates recovery air (OTA) on the phones are pushed in Europe. This happens in several waves, so not every user receives the update at the same time. It extends more than two weeks. Who when it is left to chance... The version in Europe will be an other than in the United States, where it has decided earlier to go to the user. We need to support more languages in Europe, can take ZTE Here are some more
' OK. One last question I would still. Is that ^ Europe version also the stock + UL l!get? Or we stay on MiFavor? ,
FRI, 08:21
ZTE Hello, current info: Stock + UI
SAT, 01:24
OK, thanks for the quick replies jP

Die Version in Europa wird auch eine andere sein, als in den USA, wo man sich entschieden hat, früher an die User zu gehen.

Daydream will be back. Axon 7 development is still ongoing

I wrote an email to the chief technical officer of ZTE and asked if development for the Axon 7 is still ongoing. Here is a screenshot of the answer.
Can you link exactly who you wrote to? I would like to confirm this.

Pm for now to avoid possible email spamming.
As for all the others who read this, here is a little more explanation:
He is the technical chief officer of zte and stands in direct contact with the dev team. He is also the reason we got the zip for disabling system write protection in the first place. Without him i wouldn't have gotten the update.zip (with disabled system write protection) and @raystef66 couldn't have made a flashable zip for us.
Great contact! Thanks.
Anyway to get the PIE IMS so we can get wifi calling working on Oreo or Pie?

VoLTE should work on any of the big Oreo ROMs. WFC is hit or miss (even on stock ROM). I'm assuming Oreo is gonna be the last android version we can install and still have these things work (unless some dev out there finds a way to get past this roadblock in the future). Either way, I kinda doubt ZTE would provide any further updates for us beyond Oreo. I'm assuming that the response given in the OP meant that they would fix everything that's still broken and missing on 8.0; not begin development for Pie (especially since the Axon 10 is just around the corner, pulling resources into a 3-year-old phone just isn't a sound decision from a business standpoint).

It is if ZTE expect some form of customer loyalty on future purchase decisions. Would you buy the Axon 10/11/12 etc. based on your Axon 7 experience? Yes they had disruptions from trade sanctions etc. but that's not the consumers fault and imo ZTE should be doing everything they can to restore faith in their brand.
They're basically starting again.
They need an affordable flagship like the Axon 7 was. If they don't, it will be hard to gather enough sales to start a customer pool and try for return purchase later on.
Current customers are wary, sceptical and untrusting after that whole fiasco and rightly so.

They just need to copy and paste the Axon 7 with newer specs.
Maybe bumping it to 6" in order to have more internal space would do the trick.
I still can't understand how did they think that the Axon 9 Pro was a good idea. They litterally took all that was great about the A7 and...deleted it.
Now...a bit of an on topic question. Instead of releasing 8.0, could they not enter the Android One program with it...especially since they were aiming for stock experience?
Maybe it's been asked before, but what are the implications of entering the AO program, because IIRC, I may have read some time ago something about a partition not existing on the device and ZTE not gambling with a large release, but I can't remember specifically?

The vendor partition stuff is something else entirely. Some people believed that ZTE would bring Treble support to the Axon while that made very little sense (Treble is a requirement for phones that SHIP with Oreo and above, but it's optional for Oreo, and its main advantage is it makes it easier for OEMs to update major Android versions). It was developed by djkuz and NFound eventually anyways, but only because of the generic ROM benefits
I don't think you can simply slap Android One certification on the middle of a product's life, but even if they could, it would make absolutely zero sense for them... Why be commited to security updates and newer Android versions on a phone that has surely stopped giving any revenue since long ago? Plus I'm not even sure if people prefer stock Android to stuff like One UI where you have a bunch of options
Do not expect to much from ZTE for the Axon 7. Until now they did not release a stable OS and it will not change for the next update.

Marshmallow and Nougat were perfectly stable, if not the chinese versions. i'd say that counts.
The important thing is them fixing Daydream because it doesn't only entail adding daydream back, to run it properly you need to have thermals and the kernel properly tuned. Daydream should put the phone at ~1.3 GHz but I believe they'll have to mess around to make it work as intended anyways
plus all this is useful for LOS
Marshmallow and Nougat had a very bad design and UI because of mifavor. Oreo is nice but extremly unstable.

What next update?
I thought this device was EOL as far as zte was concerned. There hasn't been an official update since august of last year and that had a security update of july '18. That's 6+ months ago. I think we're on our own now....

Not ignoring OP at all... Simply going by zte's past actions. I've seen these sort of promises with other devices (moto x pure comes to mind) in the past. I'll believe it when I see it.
Got a link to this update from 2 weeks ago? What was the actual update?

All I'm saying is, @GodOfPsychos contacted this ZTE guy, he said that an update was going to be released, and then XDA'S EDITOR IN CHIEF contacted that guy and got the same response (with which an article was made). They can bail at any time, but it's not like they are promising Pie anyways
I'm guessing you can't see the attached screenie in the OP? I can see it just fine from XDA Labs
We won't get official Android Pie for Axon 7.
The most I read into that is update to include cut out features like Daydream, probably a security update too. Just a finish of what Oreo 8.0 was supposed to be. I don't think we will even see official Oreo 8.1
If they had just kept with the whole "best sounding phone" idea I'd probably already have bought another ZTE. It was the thing that distinguished them in the crowded market of samey-same phones. At this point I'm clinging to my Axon 7 with my tight little hands, and any update to its stability will be appreciated. [Full disclosure, I'm running the GSI Liquid Remix unofficial build of Pie, but if they do update the official Oreo and get it rock solid, I could see downgrading just to be on an official ROM.]
