Very dissapointed with USB transfer speed. - Xiaomi Mi 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

I've been testing the usb transfer speed for the Mi8 using several computers with USB 3.0 and 3.1 and I'm very disappointed.
Transfering a large 3GB video file takes 95 seconds. That's around 32MB/s.
This is as slow as my six years old mobile.
Is there any setting to boost that speed?
Or is it really so bad?
I expected at least a USB 3.0 speed on this "state-of-the art" Xiaomi phone.
On the other hand the dual GPS is not working as expected yet. They advertise it but it but it's accuracy is very bad.

None of the Xiaomi devices uses USB 3(.1).
And there are gps issues for some users, you can read everywhere.
Both of them are known things.

Yes, that's why I'm disappointed.
The USB doesn't have solution. (I expected at least USB 3.0)
The GPS we hope it has a solution soon.

Speed up of host USB port

Hi all,
Hate to generate a new thread for this, but I've been looking all over and can't find anyone who has asked this. On the 7501, has anyone tried speeding up the host USB port? It's claim is that it is a USB 1.1 port, but is ti that way because of hardware a limitation or because that is the speed selected? Transferring files to/from memory sticks or ext HD is very slow.
Thanks
Matt
IIRC it is a limitation of the USB Host controller which is 1.1.

After the initial novelty wore off I only used the USB host input on the Athena for HID devices, I think it's practically useless for anything where speed is important. If I tried to view a movie the drive would often disappear halfway through the film, and navigating forward was ridiculously slow. Even photo slideshows had a lot of lag. It's a shame it isn't USB 2.0, not sure why they created this limitation since usb 2.0 is really old in itself now. 1.1 is ANCIENT
Thanks guys,
That is what I suspected, a hardware limitation. It may become a reason to upgrade sometime in the distant future. Like we need a reason.

[Q] iDisplay alternatives

I've been trying iDisplay for a while which turns your android device into a second monitor. It works but it's rather laggy. I remember reading about some alternatives which, sadly, I can't find again.
So.. do any of you know any alternatives for iDisplay?
i didn't know there was such a thing. o-O sounds awesome tho, even if laggy.
*thanks*
can't be too fast tho, USB's fairly crappy for video.
Yes. Can you post the link where you download that app?
It's in the market. You can download a trial here: http://www.shapeservices.com/en/products/details.php?product=idisplay
Works through WiFi, not USB.
Hi, iDisplay is theonly one but remember even if there is something better is still laggy because USB 2.0 transfer data at a maximum of 480Mbps which is insufficient for a smooth PC like experience compared to the 3.96 Gbps speed on DVI cable, maybe a phone with the new USB 3.0 with 3.2 Gbps speed would suffice

Recently we have released new iDisplay version, which works faster.
USB connection is supported also.

Galaxy S5 Transfer Speed with USB 3.0 ( No difference ?)

I have both the original USB 3.0 Samsung cable + USB 3.0 Ports on my PC ( Asrock Z87 Extreme4 Motherboard).
USB 3.0 enabled in BIOS and everything. My computer detects it as 3.0 cable .
But whenever I select USB 3.0 mode on the phone and transfer large files,
I noticed there is barely or no difference in transfer speed at all, as compared to MTP (regular) mode ?
Is anyone in the same situation .
I heard this 3.0 feature is actually just for charging speed not transfer speed on the S5.
Can somebody clarify ?
Thanks!

I transferred a 9.8 gb file last night in under 5 minutes. I don't know exactly how long it took but I know after my 4:27 YouTube video it was finished. I have personally seen much faster speeds. Are you missing drivers for your mobo?
As for charging, I get the same voltage irregardless old which USB port I use. Only USB port I know that would make a difference is one of those new high voltage always on ports I hear about.

Whoaaa, the speeds are at minimum double than regular mtp. But where the 3.0 really shines is transferring a bunch of small files as opposed to a few large files.

Really ? Wow lmao .
Well my PC already detects it as a 3.0 usb device ...
So I'm really not sure if it's a problem with my PC drivers or anything .
And yeah I figured the charging isn't much if a big deal .
I'm gon try to troubleshoot this somehow later .

WELL...Apparently USb 3.0 is not supported by MTP w/e AT ALL :
"From what I see it's a technical issue with the Android OS. Certain android applications are restricted from being moved from the internal memory to your internally mounted external SD card. That's part of android's protection: your "external" SD card is no longer considered as an USB mass storage device. The reasoning popped out at me when I began to think about my HP Touchpad running CM10 (ICS). When I mount it to my Linux Desktop, it's still recognized as USB Mass storage device.
Using MTP protects permissions, users, groups, and other file management parameters. Unfortunately, libmtp has not yet been updated to support USB 3.0 speeds. We can only hope it will be as USB 3.0 is becoming more and more prevalent.
The only way I see one can benefit from USB 3.0 transfer speeds to and from android devices (Kit-Kat and beyond) now is to use an OTG 3.0 thumb drive, until that glorious day when USB 3.0 is supported by libmtp."

There's no way. The USB-C in Mi 9 is only USB 2.0, not even 3.0 so forget about Thunderbolt 3. You can only get at best 20-30 MBps, it's the best practical speed a USB 2.0 can achieve.

Wtf, USB 2.0 is 480Mbps, 48Mo/s.
Unless your Mi 9 is the only device connected to a 5ghz router, a cable will be the best option you got.

That's the THEORETICAL limit (60MBps actually, divide by 8 instead of 10 for more well known understanding), which no PRACTICAL implementation ever reaches. The best one was something around 41MBps, but it's an externally powered drive instead of embedded one in a phone chipset.

FTP depends on the general network speed (+a little overhead), the best you can get is a from the best 5GHz router. But still, 1Gbps is the best you can get. Remember, the best, not average. Actual speed will vary up and down, and can be a lot if the router quality is not good. To get 20Gbps, you need at least Thunderbolt 2. No smartphone ever created ships with it.
Use Wifi Direct, it's the fastest option. I can recommend Send Anywhere.

Question file transfer speeds, usb2.0 vs wifi 6

The 90s called Asus about them returning the usb2.0 speeds, but I guess no one at the company picked the phone, and now the zenfone 9 is stuck with that.
Or maybe Asus systems designers thought, "let's keep it smaller by saving usb 3.0 or 3.1 speeds because via wifi 6e the phone is already able of doing up to 9.6gbps speeds and wifi is the future."
Can someone do some benchmarks on wifi 6, by locally transferring some big files, and post their results? This is kind of an important factor to know for people who are thinking of shooting many 8k videos, or (what I am thinking of) edit 360 videos via insta360 app, and then being able to transfer large files to the pc.
usb2.0 to transfer those large files is a deal breaker, absence of sd card slot with good speeds could be an alternative, but no: We are left with the wireless options that, theoretically, are the answer but in practice I'd like to see some tests.
Thanks!

All Xiaomi devices even with 12S Ultra also only USB 2.0, OnePlus 10T and even iPhone 14 for example. There are more devices with old spec USB than you might think.
Back to the wifi transfer. I only have wifi 6. Using Asus file transfer and I got about 20 MB/s.
Maybe there is a better way but for now that's what I got
be sure to turn on dual band wifi to maybe get your wifi to hit a gigabit.
