I have a Kogan KALED55KU8000SZA 55-inch Smart TV - identified by My Device Pro as an "MStar Android TV" from "MStar Semiconductor", using the "arbutus" board and the "monet" hardware. It runs Android TV 5.1.1 ("Lollipop"), Build aosp_arbutus-userdebug 5.1.1 LMY47V 1.1.20170720.153235 test-keys. There is a hardware report attached in PDF, courtesy of the "Device Info HW+" Android application from Andrey Efremov.
I've asked elsewhere on this site about replacing Android TV with another Linux-based operating system (such as Ubuntu), however as I expected, it's looking like this might not be a realistic solution... So now I would like to "root" this "smart" television, in order to remove some of the rubbish which is included and set the "smart" television to either switch to HDMI "x" when I turn it on or automatically run Kodi/XBMC for Android when I turn the "smart" television on.
Courtesy of Xda Developers, I have thus far tried:
* -Key Root Master (MOD Version) 1.3.6, which crashes when I try to run the application;
* KingRoot 5.3.7, which does not seem to work (it counts up to 25% on the "Aquiring Root" screen, then tells me that "root failed");
* Framaroot 1.9.3, which tells me Your device seems not vulnerable to exploit included in Framaroot.
I can see that KingRoot supposedly has more "root" success via USB debugging, but I cannot seem to get the "developer" mode to appear because when I do the "click on build seven times" thing, nothing happens and no extra menus appear... The "smart" television has multiple USB ports and wireless (Wi-Fi) connectivity; I'd need to physically check but (Android) settings seems to think it has an ethernet port too,
Has anyone has any luck "rooting" these "smart" televisions?
Have U tried this.

Another solution is Plex TV which IMHO is superior to Kodi.
Plex apps available for all OS, or you can use a browser.
Obviously you need a server.
The new Kogan Android TV rocks or just use Chromecast & a device to drive it.
Sorry but best I can suggest.

Try 360 root, it work fine for me
any update
Hi gregoryopera,
Did you find any clues ?
I must thank you for all your post on internet, because you made me learn that your TV is a clone of mine, and I managed to find the mstar_upgrade.bin for yours, that include the google play files i was needed in order to make my tv little bit more clever ^^
I wasn't able to root mine, but as you can get a root access through ADB (thanks to the "user debug" state), you can already do many things..
from what i found, you could remove unwanted apk with this :
./adb connect #ip_of_tv#
./adb root
./adb connect #ip_of_tv#
./adb remount
./adb shell pm list packages
./adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.#copy-paste_package_name#
For launching specified apk at start, you could use Launch on Boot app, which didn't require a rooted devices
For info, after adding my tv device id to the https://www.google.com/android/uncertified/ page, and few hours of delay, i was able to use the google play, and then i was able to update google play services 14.7.99 (020400-223214910)
Now I fighting with it in order to use a bluetooth dongle (all drivers and files are already present in the system, but I'm unable to activate the bluetooth..)
Another point I'm looking at, is to add widevine drm support to it, since the original nexus player build.id=LMY47V was supporting it..
Could you please send me some picture of your system UI (I'm thinking about flashing my "philips" mstar arbutus tv with your "kogan" mstar arbutus firmware... philips created an incredible ****e for this tv, android settings hidden, home page is a philips store app suggestions loader (totally useless)...) or tell me where you may have post it already ?
many thanks,
Heyy ThAneb!
I have been facing similar problems with you guys. I know this is a somewhat old post but I was hoping how you set up adb in your tv? I cannot turn on developer mode so I don't really know how I go about doing it because evry other step to set it seems to require it to be on the dv mode.
Please tell how I can set it up.
Hi, I know it's a bit late but I managed to enter in developer mode, you need to connect an external mouse to do that, click several times till enable come back to the main screen and go in settings. It might show developer mode. I'm trying now to enable root mode and then change the build.

Hello everyone,
I am new here and like most posting a message for the first time I hope it's in the correct forum section.
For the record I have always been pretty good at researching things and figuring things out for myself but my current issue has me puzzled. Here is the issue:
I purchased a chinese Vivobox i3 rougly a year ago and for the most part it has worked well but has recently fallen short on its functionality.
After a recent power outage I came to find that the mini - air mouse remote stopped working except for 3 buttons which I found strange. I immediately thought no big deal just flip the box over and push the reset button and all will be good except pushing and holding the reset button then plugging in power cord didn't do anything except display a "safe mode" message in the bottom left of the screen after it booted up. This still didn't fix my problem with the remote. It still didn't work.
I went out and bought a new track pad / keypad combo unit thinking my old one had simply died but it didn't work at all.
So I tried using a USB mouse (which I should have done before buying a new wireless keypad at the begining) and it worked but things got more bizzar.
Using my mouse I setup my box (internet connection etc.) and came to find that all my downloaded apps were gone ( probably got wiped from memory ) and navigated to the Google playstore and tried downloading an app. The download appears to start by showing a progress bar but the progress bar never moves and it doesn't download any files. It stays in download mode and doesn't download anything, its weird I can check my hotmail visit plenty of pages but it will not download any android apps. Its as though the android firmware is corrupted.
In short, the box appears to have lost remote control functions, and the android functionality is all screwed up.
So this brings me to my current situation, I figured I would visit the vendor's website and get the newest firmware and flash mybox in hopes that it would correct things. I visited the vendors support website (vivobox.co) but the site is no longer up and there are no files anywhere online for this box.
With no files available I thought to try and root it and load a custom rom but I can't get the box to boot into android recovery mode to install the necessary files . I tried all manual methods I could think of but this box will not allow a boot into recovery mode. I then went online and downloaded Amlogic SD card maker.exe. Tried to create a boot recovery SD card and that failed. I tried everything.
The only thing that kinda worked was forcing a boot from SD card condition by using the shorting 2 pins method on the memory IC on the board inside with an SD card containing a complete image and firmware package for a mitricom box (found on XDA), except it freezes 1/4 of the way through the update.
In short I need to do one of 2 things, 1) find a way to manually enter android system recovery and root it to install a custom rom or 2) find a file that I can force boot with a compatible firmware.
Here are the specs. on my Vivobox i3 if anyone has any suggestions or has encountered this before.

Hi all,
in order to start studing oscam running on my Sony Bravia kdl-55x8509c - lollipop 5.1.1 and powered by mt5890 i need root access on fs.
I cannot find a working (also temporary) root method:
- no usb ad support (just over ip)
- i don't know if bootloader is locked or not, fastboot mode has no output on screen and "fastboot oem device-info" stuck wihtout output
- kingroot (also with fake position on) fails
- firmware updates are released in pkg format, usable only by recovery, cannot try to extract boot.img to an unsecure boot by fastboot (hoping to have an unlocked bootloader)
Have you any advice about ?
Thanks

Hello,
Any news about that subject, i'm very interest too.
Thanks
If there is a way and i root my sony would it be able to enable 3d functionality?
i also didnt found any root method yet on BRAVIA 2015 Android TV with Nougat. Bootloader is locked, and fastboot oem unlock command doesnt exist on this device. so bootloader unlocking is impossible.
i very regret that i bought sony tv. i should buy philips android tv instead, they can be rooted.
but i trusted sony with being open to development because of theyr sodp program, my mistake.
This triggers me so much that i would never buy any product from sony excepting smartphones.

Found this via a google search, try giving it a shot and see if it works. Otherwise there are other results and YouTube videos. One of those should point you in the right direction.

Though it would help anyone who would want to try and help if you provided some more information on the nature of the issue and phone.
For example knowing the disposition of the phone (how you got it, is it a demo/retail/company provided/etc), what kind of phone it is (snapdragon, exynos), model of the phone and how MDM was (or would have been) activated on the phone. MDM isn't there for no reason, and it would seem (reading what little I did on those Google Searches) the solutions would kinda seem too tailor towards the reason:
For example:
You work for a company (or of your own accord) that installed Mobile Device Management profiles
This is a demo unit from a store
You installed an application that configured MDM
You may have tried installing firmware (official, custom, unofficial, etc)
well i think im gonna keep using it as demo there is no help any where .exept the 120 usd to drop the file for parmanent remove of that demo .

Hi there. I had the same issue on my samsung Note 10.1 2014 edition I purchased as a demo unit. tried flashing stock ROM using ODIN with no effect and unable to factory reset. finally, this was how I was able to factory reset by tablet with all the retail settings including all the preinstalled videos and images gone.
1. Firstly, your device should be signed into your google account.
2.Enable find my phone in settings
3.Go to your google account (in the same device or different device).
4.Go to devices and select lost device
5.press "consider erasing" device
And Voila, the tablet was reset to stock android with no retail apps or data.
Hope this helps someone.
Thanks

But I doubt this flaw will work on latest devices note 8, j7 pro,. Just to mention two of the devices I have got.
Also some MDM implementations will not allow you to enter settings menu.

Hi, I, too, have been very frustrated with the same problem, having tried all the root apk's I could find to root my RCA Maven Pro 11.6 tablet pc rct6213w87mm to avail. This device has to be one of the most difficult, if not impossible, tablet pc's to root and I'm wondering cynically whether the manufacturer intentionally made it like that to prevent the user from deleting many frivolous bloatwares installed that cannot be uninstalled without rooting the device. I sent an email to the RCA tech support requesting the usb driver for this model, but have not gotten any response, yet, if they will ever respond, that is.
Another Jon here. No relation.
I support a bunch of these specific tablets, we use them for sheet music display. Can't find firmware, can't root them. I feel your pain. However...I also know that the #1 problem with the RCT6213W87M tablet is that it spontaneously crashes & reboots whenever the Play Store app tries to install the latest version of the Google app. Took me awhile to figure this one out, let me tell you. Google doesn't care, because Android 6.0 is yesterday's news to them. RCA doesn't care, because they want you to buy a new tablet. But all the musicians care, very much, when their sheet music display crashes in the middle of a set. I told them to stop being lazy and just memorize all the music. They didn't think that was funny.
My initial fix was to disable auto-updates in the Play Store app, but that's a maintenance headache. A better workaround is to use the instructions at https://www.maketecheasier.com/prevent-specific-android-apps-auto-updating/ -- scroll about halfway down to "Stopping One App From Updating" and do that for the Google app. You still can't root the tablet or remove the bloatware, but it will at least stop the spontaneous reboots. And the musicians will stop throwing the tablets at you.

That is about the same as I found. It seems that besides that one has to make it device owner, not just profile owner, or whatever.
Android Device Owner
In our previous blog post called Implementing Kiosk Mode in Android: Part 3, we briefly explored the Device Owner concept that was introduced in Android 5.0, Lollipop. In this article, we will provide a more in-depth look at the Android Device Owner, device policy controllers and what these mean...
