Hello!
A lil back story!
Im coming from a nexus 5 32gig, used it for 4 years, broke its screen and now kept it on the side.
was dying to purchase the iphone se for 21k via bajaj emi card, sadly that option wasn't available.
The only option i had was honor 8 pro 30k.
Device was great but i would have to care alot and i thought spending that much on that phone might not be worth it. phone seems great, but that big phone isn't really my thing and i doubt id use it to its full potential.
So with a heavy heart i booked the note 4 32 gig[as thats more than enough for me]
I dont mean to offend anyone, im sure people love the phone and its GREAT for the price. thats why i got it
ill be getting it tomorrow, so before it arrives i thought id get my self prepared and cheer my self up.
i plan to make alot of changes, it would be great if someone could guide me!
1] I plan to change the firmware to lineage os or any suggestions are welcome?
2] anyway i can get stereo speakers mod? like earpiece and bottom firing speaker together?[i did it on my nexus 5]
3] Any camera mods?
4] If i flash the custom firmware would it make an impact on my battery life? i kinda felt it does on the camera, but still?
5] Any mods i should install from your end guys? PLEASE advice?
I got this phone cause it has great support, great built and amazing battery!
So i just thought i can make it my own lil Pixel [aka nexus 5 replacement]
Really looking forward to some help
Thank you all:fingers-crossed:

Hi!
1. There are customs with much more features than LOS and you can find them there on xda. I hope you ordered a snapdragon variant!
2. Im pretty sure that i've seen something like that, but trust me - you dont want to try that, because earpiece is just much worse than normal speaker.
3. Everything is on xda! But sadly i dont think that camera will be that "good" as on MIUI because MIUI has it's own camera libraries. So if you want better camera stick to MIUI.
4. Not really. Usually only kernel affects battery life.
5. Viper4Fx and dolby atmos for better sound. Don't install any AWESOME 4K SOUND MODS.

That's not true, ported Google HDR+ Camera is actually WAY better than stock MIUI camera, especially in low light. It can shot in RAW format, working HDR+ and Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and 4k recording for videos.
It can be used on both MIUI and all custom ROM's after enabling Camera2 API.

1. If you just want stock android just go with LineageOS, it's the best... If you want more you can go with Slim, PA, XenonHD, AospExt they're among the best custom rom out there
2. Dunno, I don't like music with the phone speaker because it always suck, I'm listening with my earphone and it's good enough compared to my legendary ipod touch, I can't find any significant downside.
3. Hopefully you will not get omnivision sensor because it really sucks on low light and you can't use the hdr+ mods until MIUI dev fix the bugs for omnivision sensor.
4. Yes and No, you will end up with about 10 hours of SoT... you will get 12 if the ROM is good, at least 8 if the ROM sucks.
5. Just check your camera if its sony or samsung just get the hdr+ because the only complaints about RN4 is low light camera performace, the hdr+ mod makes it perfect

There isn't such thing as best rom, but im now using ViperOS. I really liked also HalogenOS but i don't like AOSP based ROMS, I prefer LOS-based ones. You may also check xiaomi.eu rom

No modds except that Google camera. The rest is just Octos rom. Not even custom kernel because ,for this device, every custom kernel is worse than stock Los one. Pretty unbelievable a?.
But battery life is unbelievable also so no need for adjustment there.

You can get permission even in 5 minutes, you still have to wait 72 hours after binding device, sometime ago there was workaround using old unlocker but it's no longer working.
Working:
RIL
Audio
Display
Bluetooth
Wifi
Sensors
Camera
Fingerprint
Broken:
VoLTE?
I will release when I want to.

In my opinion nougat and oreo are the most unexciting Google OS I know. It's nice to have, but half of the first year after release devs on XDA and even Google itself trying to bring back the performance or/and battery life the OS version before had.
Not to mention the problems with Magisk etc.

I suppose you're right. Neither Nougat or Oreo have brought significant changes, they have both been 'minor' updates with subtle changes to improve certain aspects of the OS. The last major update to Android was Lollipop, when the entire appearance was drastically overhauled from previous versions. I'm only excited because we just have to take what we're given, and any update to update the appearance and usability of Android after an entire year is a refreshing change! Even though Nougat was only a small update, it feels unbearable to me when switching back to Marshmallow without the new quick settings swipe-down; the one before the entire notification area appears. So even the small features can make a lot of difference to the overall experience! I'm still really looking forward to seeing the changes made in Oreo for myself when it comes to the Axon 7.

I don't get why people say this, honestly. Just because you didn't get a visual overhaul like you got from KitKat to Lollipop doesn't mean there weren't significant changes. Visually the OS is already at a level where there's no need for a major change (it has been "ready" since Lollipop, imo; Marshmallow, Nougat, and Oreo have all had small visual tweaks but have stuck to the Material language), and most of the tweaks work "under the hood." Oreo will bring Project Treble, which may just be the most significant change in Android in the last few years. It also brings improvements on the behavior of notifications and background services or apps. It's an incremental update, yes. But it's by no means a small update.
@Gases
We talked about excitement.
I mentioned the problems with the new OS updates, which brings maybe more security but also many problems to custom ROMs. Furthermore there are more problems in the first months. I don't need visual tweaks.
Project treble is mainly positive for stock ROMs. We will see, in which way custom ROMs can profit of this new feature.
Background battery eating apps are no problem on custom ROMs based on LOS, if you use the internal features or external apps. But again. It's nice to have already implemented.
Finally I am always thankful for all kind of ROMs and kernels devs provide to the community. And I was always someone who donated to say 'thank you'

Here is a small update about the situation. Since the most common stuff is working im going to release this rom in 1-3 days. But don't expect to much. This rom is still WIP.
Working now:
RIL(Calls, Sms)
Audio
Most of the stuff (NFC etc.)
Broken:
Camera
Fingerprint
VoLTE (Will be probably broken until we get new blobs)

I was just looking over in the Nexus 6 forms and to overcome the camera issue for them they had to upgrade from 7.1.2 - 8.0 and then restart the phone. So there is hope especially since the Nexus 6 is a 32-bit phone and I'm pretty sure 8.0 was supposed to be 64-bit.

That is incredibly stupid. It's like they didn't bother fixing the bigger more complex issues possibly that they're not competent enough to do so. Those issues being an encryption problem that occurred during beta testing where some beta testers that updated over OTA from nougat to Oreo were stuck at an "to start android, enter password (or pin)" and the only way out was to factory reset. If they didn't fix that, then they didn't fix the overheating and battery drain issues. Disappointed.

Agreed, releasing an update that removes features. If we wanted a ROM that didn't function 100%, then we might as well stay on custom ROMs. Better off doing so in some cases.
Seems this is only for those who don't know how or don't want to learn how to install custom ROMs on their phone.
I know that's pretty obvious, it's just a shame.
Removal of daydream would be a good trade if it did something like help improve battery life and performance. Both of these were already good enough on stock nougat though. Battery was terrible in the oreo beta from what everyone reported

I installed it from SD. Had to go buy one though because I never used one ...anyway...tried installing using ADB and that will NOT work. Installed just fine from SD. This is only my backup phone so I did not set it up completely to mirror my daily driver, but it looks good. The default launcher is OK. I regularly use Nova Prime. Everything I tried worked great. I do not use Daydream or anything like that so no loss for me.

I'm sorry, but this long and we get that? This indeed has left a bitter taste in my mouth.
I'm currently using Android 5.1 and I'm thinking about upgrading to Lineage 14.1 Nightly but officially it looks like it's not available anymore: https://download.lineageos.org/mt2
I see I can still download the ROM from other websites, like here: https://android.cmphys.com/lineageos-mt2/
Is it advisable to upgrade, or should I stick with 5.1?

It was until around June. Then it started getting mad glitchy. I did end up flashing it to Lineage but then there were other problems. Battery life was still solid though. But in any case I had to trade it in for a 5g phone because my carrier wasn't going to support it any more starting in July. Anyways, it was a damn good phone that lasted me 7+ years. RIP Hami.

Definitely update, not battery drain or anything. They fixed important camera ''bugs''. However, some phones need some time (couple of days) after some updates to settle and learn usage to optimize the battery.
I would wait. Last thing you want is worse SOT. The cam update is part of the firmware.
I would say, update. I haven't noticed any worse battery life. The camera updates and security patches are well worth updating.

That is apple. You cannot think android devices are same just because apple slows down their devices on purpose after each update.

So maybe after updates worth make factory reset to comparasion.
I was skeptical from years but in example in my fold 2 from OneUi 3.1.1 after supdate via ota to 5.1 running faster without reset. Overall daylight use performance similar to S23U when I comapre side by side this devices.
But this case don't change my mind about updates and I want stay my S23U on the latest A13 more time after sharing A14 or maybe even A15.
Samsung will eventually force update no matter what. Might as well get it done and over with.
I still have s10+ as i give it to my son... Phone after all those OTA over the years is as fast as it was new and no issue with SoT, in fact sot is comparable to my 23 ultra... Maybe 1 h less... Still crazy good photos, everything works... I think all that updates issue is placebo and some legends who knows form where they come from...

Yeah I kept getting the reminder so I did it. Now the scrolling sucks in the Google feed page so jittery. Anyone else experience that? I'm not happy with this and will likely roll back to march.

No jittery Google feed issues here after updating.
