USB disconnect on Phone Sleep - LG V30 Questions & Answers

Hello all,
I'm having a strange issue with my unlocked US998 LG V30 running rooted US998 firmware. I have a desktop PC with a Gigabyte Designare Z170 Motherboard Running Windows 10. This motherboard has USB-C 3.1 ports on it and I would like to use them to charge/transfer files to and from my phone. So I'm using a USB C to C cable and when I plug it In everything works perfect, my phone will fast charge, I have MTP access, and USB debugging all work.
However, I'm noticing some odd behaviors. If I set my phone down and allow it to fall asleep, the screen will turn off and almost immediately the usb connection to the PC will drop. This connection drop kills everything even fast charging and has the fun added side effect of waking the phone up. With the phone awake a short instant after the usb connection dropped, I can see the animation near the USB plug indicating that the usb cable has been inserted and fast charging resumes (but the USB data connection takes another second or two to re-establish).
The USB data connection re-establishes just in time for the screen to turn off again and restart the cycle over, causing the USB to disconnect screen to wake etc...
Things I've tried and learned:
This doesn't happen with a USB 3.0 (C to A cable) or USB 2.0 (C to A cable) on my same desktop
USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 don't support fast charging which makes me suspect fast-charge may be playing a role in this problem somehow.
Using the phone and keeping it awake will keep the USB connection working perfectly
Enabling stay-awake setting in developer options is a viable workaround for now.
My PC's relevant drivers are up to date (Chipset Drivers, Thunderbolt Drivers, USB 3.1 Drivers) and the problem persists whether i have LG's drivers installed or not.
As my phone nears 100% and fast-charging is no longer in use the problem goes away completely. (Furthering my suspicion of fast charging playing a role in the problem)
I took a logcat (attached below) as the phone initiated sleep up to the point where USB gets disconnected and noticed the following two lines:
Code:
09-17 19:08:41.809 856 856 D [email protected]: Writing LCD OFF to /proc/lge_power/charger/restricted_charging
09-17 19:08:41.811 1353 1571 D PowerManagerServiceEx: setRestrictedCharging Mode : LCD OFF
If any one has any insight it would be greatly appreciated. This certainly isn't a deal breaker with this phone but I do plan to develop with this phone plugged in a lot; also unsolved mysteries like this bug me.

Problem solved.
I'm reporting back for any one that may have a similar issue in the future. I have solved my problem with the phone connected to my Desktop via USB C to USB C cable. Originally, at the time of writing this question, the problem was that the USB connection would disconnect when the phone sleeps and then reconnect causing the phone to wakeup from sleep. This was eventually made worse when I installed some custom ROMS like dotOS for example. After installing dotOS the USB C to USB C cable was completely unusable. Upon connection it would promptly disconnect and reconnect in a cycle until it was unplugged, rendering it useless for charging or file transfer.
TL/DR, the broken version of the thunderbolt 3 firmware on my motherboard was the cause of the issue. Searching for and updating the firmware (not driver update) for thunderbolt 3 solved my issue.
I have now found a solution to both issues! :victory:
The cause:
My motherboard supports Thunderbolt 3 over USB C. This would normally be a nice feature, as it would allow me to turbo charge my phone while transferring files etc... However, unknown to me at the time, the version of the thunderbolt 3 firmware (on the chip on my motherboard) was outdated. This is deeper than a driver issue, and Gigabyte (my motherboard manufacturer) doesn't advertise well that there are newer firmware versions available for this motherboard.
The solution:
My solution to the problem was easy after discovering that Gigabyte was holding out on me. For Gigabyte boards on the overview page of my particular motherboard there is a marketing section talking about thunderbolt 3 and how the motherboard supports it. What caught my eye was the phrasing "To upgrade your motherboard to Thunderbolt 3: Click Here". I thought this was odd as I assumed my board supported it out of the box. Clicking it takes you to a somewhat hidden page that has downloads for firmware updates for the Thunderbolt 3 Chips. After downloading and running them and following the instructions all my USB issues with my phone have gone away! :good:
So the the broken version of the thunderbolt 3 firmware on my motherboard must have been failing to initialize the device connection in someway, causing it to misbehave.
Sorry, I realize this post isn't related to any particular phone and this post would probably best be posted on some forum related to my motherboard, but my original question assumed it was just a problem with the phone. Any one with a thunderbolt 3 port with problems similar to those described above, you might want to look into a firmware update!

[Q] Unable to connect to pc (no it's not a driver issue....)

Hi,
Having a problem since a few weeks with my s3.
Normally i could connect wiht my phone to any pc,, without any problems. Either it be unix, win, whatever...
Suddnely it stopped working, only thing that happens is charging when i connect it to my pc. Different cables tested, original one, etc..
Connecting it to different pc's resulted in a no go.. so it must be phone related.
No windows pop up, or anything!!
So I figured: Let's install a new rom.
Tried ultima 15 rom, got a different CM rom now (sentinel)... all to no avail.
Is it possible that this has something to do with my radio?
rom info:
android: 4.3
baseband: CEEMG2
Anyone have an idea what to do? Even ADB push ain't working..
See your identical post
I experienced the same problem when m using the Galaxy Nexus S But it was solved by using the app from play store named SD booster... In this app m just set the value of sd card to 1024 give root access and Boom my phone is connected as normal
If this not help then i seriously recommend you to replace the charging port of the mobile through samsung outlet
Go into developer settings, some ROMs may have different ways to get into develop er setting and after you get in make sure USB debugging is enable ^.^
Sent from my SPH-L710 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Usb debugging is not required for phone to pc connection see basic faqs and guides .
But as OP has ruled out drivers and cable that only leaves the phone so its worth trying .
Usual replies are
Drivers
Cable
Dirty USB Ports
Not connected to main-board usb port .
I had same issue with my Galaxy SII and when i took it to service center they said mother board needs to be replaced.
So after that SII was good as new.
Got same problem here.
phone is charging over usb , but no data connection (tried different usb cables, different usb ports, different pc etc) but nothing..
also.. tried in download mode and so (after reading forums..) but without success.
then i decided to dissasemble that phone and look, what's inside that beast
cleaned usb port (inside, with contact cleaner), resoldered all pins and etc..
reassembled it back to one piece again and still, no data connection, but only charging
so, here i am, what to do next ? change the usb port on motherboard ?
(visually, everything looks right, good solder points and etc.)
Thanks, Martin

if anybody interested:
i've got it working again :victory:
basically, the problem was the hard way (crap usb data connections on motherboard)
soldered new ways for data+ and data-, and now it's back alive again...
(pictures of ways in attachment)
Martin
see you fixed it already but a note to others :
try using usb port right on the motherboard instead of the case front panel usb ports.....connecting to the front usb ports didn't work for me on some roms, but the rear one always connected so I just have a long cable running out of the back to connect my phone and it works on all roms I've used so far
Nice work hani93, i unfortunately do not dare to desolder and solder this stuff
I've noticed another thing though which is weird!!
When i tried to charge my phone via the power charger (the ac one?), when i check my battery view it still says that i'm charging via USB.
I don't think this is correct, i thought it should say AC or something and when charging via USB port on pc it should display USB?
I think this might be one of the issues that it's also not popping up on the computer.
Anyone know what is causing this or someone can confirm that when charging via power supply it should say something else then USB?
Just confirming your question when charging by PC it says (USB) and when its charging from the Mains it says (AC).
hmmm... guess it must be a hardware issue then?
Either usb port or mainboard... christ...
open it up and cleaned the contacts a bit of the usb port...
Still not functioning..

try to go into Download mode (volDown+Home+Power) and then connect usb, same situation?(eg, no data connection to pc ?)
if nothing again.. try to clean usb port inside (where you plug usb cable), sometimes there is dust and etc. then it stops working.
also, how did you clean contacts on motherboard ? i suggest to take soldering iron with clean bit, and drag iron along the pins.

Honor 7 PLK-UL00 and B341 Device not recognised and its only charging

Hello all,
Honor 7,
PLK-UL00
B341 and EMUI 4.0
Android 6.0
Im unable to use my phone as USB Mass storage device. When i connect my phone to PC sometimes im getting as USB device not recognized and sometimes im not. I tried different PCs and different cables. ITs ONLY CHARGING
tried cleaning the micro usb port, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers in Pcs but it didnt work.
I switched off my phone, removed mem card, reinserted it, swithced it on again, connected my phone to PC(in sleep mode)
phone is detected as storage device and got notification in notification panel to select as charge only/files mode/ photos mode.
After ejecting and removing cable again back to issue. No detection. OTG also not detected. No Data transfers are being made but its only charging( even through Car USB port)
Anybody facing USB not recognised problem ? i hope its software related.
could anyone let me know of solution.
Thanks.
I am also facing the same issue
I thought I was alone in this issue.
Basically, my problem is, the wall charging and USB connect are reversed. i.e., I connect my wall charger, its showing as USB mode and when I connect the cable to a PC, its showing as AC Charging. I tested with Ampere app and when I connect to AC Charger, it is drawing only around 300mA(like it would do if connected to USB) and its drawing around 1.5A(like it would do when connected to wall charger) when connected to USB PC.
I have been having this issue for quite sometime and recently, I had upgraded to Marshmallow through OTA upgrade. I thought atleast this upgrade would fix this issue but I am still facing the same issue. I even contacted the customer care and nothing useful advice other than restoring to factory settings was suggested(which I tried and didn't work).
I guess it should be some software issue but don't know what it is or how to fix it. Any inputs would be welcome.

External USB device not being detected

Hi I have an LG Gpad X8.0 v520. It has a full size USB A port. I used to use a Kingston USB 64gb with it. But then one day suddenly it stopped working. The USB was not being detected nor any other device such as usb dongle for a wireless controller. They don't get detected even when I connect using the charging micro-B port with an OTG converter. Sometimes it works perfectly and then it works for like a day maybe two then stops working again. I have no idea what triggers it but the not working times are much more than the working times. My suspicion is that it has something to do with charging the device. Perhaps media is disabled during charging and it doesn't get reenabled. But I don't have the expertise to diagnose the problem I was hoping someone could help. I have already tried restarting every time and the USB devices all work perfectly on their own.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
I am not sure if your device has a mechanical issue ( contacts or pins inside connector? ) or only software.
i have a handful of V521's and some are fast when detecting USB , other take a min or two. whenever the STOCK rom/firmware hangs or does not populate with a new usb device, i power down the device after plugging it into charger. ( this isn't fast..) when its completely in stand-by , waiting to be turned on, wait for the battery icon to pop up on the screen ( charging level / status ). the battery icon that pop's up indicates a hardware controlled charging status. insert your USB and then power ON your tablet. (note: A 1tb SSD - it takes about 9 minutes to populate under LG's file explorer after this) This should work, but from this point on, use the EJECT option ( software ) before removing the device.
-i can confirm on 4 separate V521's that if the battery is 20% or LESS, USB devices won't always work. i never found the perfect tablet charge level, but 80% seems to have no issues for me.
The FACTORY rom only likes certain partition tables, so if your USB drive or thumb drive gets messed up, check it in a linux device. (it ALSO doesn't seem to like more than 2 partitions PER usb device)
-the V521 will see a 4TB SATA SSD in a usb enclosure, but don't expect it to instantly appear.
i use a dedicated LG-v521 tablet , to transfer files wirelessly with my SHIELD TV's.
-last note for ANYONE having issues, try a WOODEN TOOTHPICK if the USB connectors are pushed down or need re-bending. I like to smash a toothpick end with a flat hammer, dip the toothpick in some super thin superglue (CA) , let it dry, and it becomes the perfect contact adjustment tool.
-DE-OX-IT contact cleaner ALSO works wonders, just kind of pricey for a one time fix. ( this stuff is amazing, but ALWAYS WIPE IT OFF after using it, otherwise it continues to remove oxidation and makes a mess )
-there is a current limit set for the USB port on this tablet, and if the USB you try, bumps it or exceeds it, i'll start the process over again with restrictions ( lower power levels ) until a valid handshake.

I am having this issue as well. No noticeable physical damage. I factory reset the device too. The usb provides power just fine. But there is no data exchange. I am using a CarPlay dongle with it and it worked all day yesterday then it suddenly didn’t work. At first I thought it was because I drained the battery to 20%. So I charged it and the issue still persists. Any ideas?

Tried multiple dongles too. Tired usb thumb drives and they don’t detect either.
- does the tablet have WIFI/CELL signal ?
- did you try power cycling with and then WITHOUT the USB device inserted ?
-is the battery near the end of life, IE: old lipo EVEN IF CHARGED will cause nightmares..( changed 7 tablets batteries over weird issues )
- You confirm the USB port still provides power when needed ? (ill post a pic)
Stock ROM? ROOTED?
-whatever device you plug in, does the STOCK FILE EXPLORER show anything ?
-i turned off AUDIO ROUTING USB under DEV settings, not sure if this matters ?
-Conflicting APPS trying to all see the same port ? ( ES FILE EXPLORER gave me issues )
-its possible if you plugged in a USB DEVICE that pulled too much power, the regulating IC failed?
-ODD one here, but did you wait a bit, to see if it populated ?
below is a 8TB drive in a cheap china case, works great, just need to wait about 10 mins for it to populate.
(i use a dedicated V521 for compressing files , then moving them to HARD DRIVES)
- not sure what MICRO SD card everyone uses, but i personaly like the SANSDISK EXTREME PRO ( BLACK RED ) just wish they weren't so expensive. - the V521 will move files from the MICRO SD to HDD at about 50-70MBS

LG G5 USB charger module replaced - still no USB connection to PC

hello Forum
I own two identical LG G5 Android 8.0.0 smart phones, say A (working) and X (has issues) and several Windows 10 (1909, 20H2, 21H1) PCs.
Since today, I have the following issue with phone X:
won't fast charge anymore
is not recognized by PC/Windows anymore
To isolate the problems, I've performed the following tests:
tried 3 different USB cables to connect A to PCs
A is recognized with by every single PC/Windows
conclusion: all 3 USB cables are fine
connected A with USB cables to 2 different USB ports on each my PCs
A is recognized on every USB port
conclusion: all USB ports on my PCs are fine
connected 3 different cables to the same quick charger
A gets "fast charging"
conclusion: all 3 USB cables support fast charging
conclusion: fast charger is fine
Now the results with X, the one that has issues:
Connecting X to any USB Port and any PC with any USB-cable:
no "USB device detection" sound
no "unknown device" in Windows Device Manager
no "USB device not recognized" in Notification Center
Connecting X to the quick charger with any cable I get only a normal charging behavior even though the battery level is below 80%.
Well, luckily I own two identical phones, so I swapped the whole battery/charger module but interestingly exactly same behavior:
A wird erkannt, aber X nicht
A still gets detected by Windows
A still can fast charge
X won't get detected by Windows
X won't fast charge
Conclusion: the LG G5 Charger Module and thus the LG G5 USB-C-Ports are fine
I've also connected an OTG-USB-socket to my X and in it a USB flash drive and guess what: I can read the USB flash drive via USB-C port flawlessly!
IMHO something else is wrong with X which has nothing to do with cable, LG USB-C port, PC USB ports, Windows version.
I did not install any Apps during the night as I have automatic app updates disabled.
What could the issue be?
What else could I try besides:
rebooting without SIM card
rebooting without SD card
rebooting in Safe Mode
turn off, leave it off for an hour, turn it on
I did of course not factory reset X! This is the last thing I want to try.
i'm totally clueless

Dude you got any fix????
Exact Same things are happening to My LG-G5 toady..... No idea what to do now.....
No unfortunately not!
What I did, was creating a backup with LG Backup App, additionally copied all the data (never trust the rabbit) onto my microSD card, then removed the microSD card from the device and copied the data to my PC to have an actual backup! I still haven't factory reset my device, as I hate to install and setup every app again.
If you do a factory reset or reinstall a new firmware, please let us know, if that helped!
thanx
SAME PROBLEM HERE!!! FACTORY RESET DIDN'T HELP, ANY SOLUTION??? THX!!!!!!!!

Guys, i got mine fixed by repairing of charging port
How???????

Nokia 7.1 autostart when charging (Damaged USB Port)

First off the biggest problem is the damaged USB port. I got the phone from my little brother in this condition and want to use it as a screen for Klipper. I soldered two wires for charging on the traces of the USB-C Port PCB so data transfer using USB isn't possible anymore. Because I don't want to turn the phone on manually every single time I wanted it to start automaticly when it's charging. The missing USB port causes all the problems as all guides I found are based on some kind of computerassisted install. Therefore I'd be really happy if someone could guide me through this mess and potentially also help others
