THIS PROCESS WILL ERASE ALL YOUR DATA
I encrypted my HTC ONE MAX last day and because of TWRP error in decrypting my partitions,Like:
Code:
Mount /SYSTEM.error
Mount /DATA error
I decided to decrypte my phone but as I said, TWRP recovery Didn't found any partion on my internal strong.
The solution is simple :
1.Download stock HTC stock recovery :
Stock Recovery Sense 6 - Latest
Stock recovery 3.23.401.1 (Google Drive Download Link) (it's for international version - Find more in other threads)
2.Boot into bootloader -> Fastboot
Use your ADB :
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_t6ul-3.23.401.1.img
3. Go to your Setting -> Backup & Reset and Reset Your device
your device will reboot and recovery will ERASE ALL YOUR DATA
Now You have Non-encrypted Device
4.in final step you could flash TWRP again Like:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.7.0-t6ul.img
Another option is using TWRP...
Go into the Wipe settings,
Select Format Data,
Type Yes when prompt
And when is complete, complete a Factory Reset under the Wipe settings.
Don't forget that it will wipe internal storage so you will need to have a copy of the ROM on the external storage to flash..

Hey,
recently many are facing the problem to suddenly receive the above error and aren't able to solve it by formatting data (well, it cannot be mounted).
Here are the steps that I suggest in case you find yourself in that situation (obviously all data including internal storage content will be gone afterwards, so make external backups of important stuff if you can before continuing)
- (re-)flash lastest twrp (currently 3.2.1.1) via fastboot
- boot to recovery
- wipe dalvik, cache, vendor, system, data
- format data (the one where you need to type "yes")
- reboot to recovery before flashing anything
- now flash your stuff
This helped a few people already, but please comment if it also does (or doesn't) for you!
Cheers and greetings,
Phil the Thrill
I had this problem, but not always just formatting helps. First time when I install LOS 15.1 I didn't format internal storage then LOS crypt my storage and TWRP couldn't mount it and I can't just format it, I have error when I try to format it in ext4 by default. Then I try to format it to another file system and select ext2. TWRP succesful format data and then I select again to format it to ext4 and install other rom. I don't know why first time TWRP couldn't format data.
I use google translate. Sorry if I have misspellings

I didn't just suggest to format anything...
The important thing is to reflash twrp via fastboot.
The point is that after doing this you might even be able at all again to format data...
If you follow the further steps I think you're good to go and don't need to change any file system.

Hi, I had the same problem. (Redmi Note 4, Mido)
But after installing RedWolf (Build 27)
with adb/fastboot and everything works fine - without formating everything.
This maybe can help,
first i enter wipe menu on twrp and advanced wipe, mark data partition then repair or change file system, after that change file system, change to what ever except ext4 (i use ext2 one) then change again to ext 4. Done you get data partition back
*this method will wipe your data on that partition
solution about unable to mount data on s7 edge
Hi,
Make sure to do a backup of your data, all data will be erased
after many attempts to find the solution
i tried to go to recovery latest twrp:
go to wipe
select data
for me i choosed ext3 and make repair
than i select Fat and again ext3
you can choose another file system
Thank you
Thanks this worked for me
This is the best answer to solve the problem:

I was in Xiaomi.EU 9.3.28 in a "encrypted storage" situation
After messing it up I endend in a situation where I can not mount the data partition.
Follow your steps and now I'm setting up xiaomi.eu 9.5.9 without a problem.
Thank you very much.

Format data solved everything. But before format data, you better backup all your files. Because all of it will be erased like new.
Thank you.

Hi, i have TWRP 3.6.0 installed on my mi 11 lite (courbet), and then it shows "unable to mount /data". I know, formatting helps, but what to do if i don't want to format it, only i want to update the rom?
Hi everyone,
I have a issue with my device I wiped system cache and vendor dalvik cache but skipped data as I always do but for some reason I am unable to decrypt data after clean install of Lineage OS. Actually I wanted to remove Magisk so I just wiped those and installed same version of Lineage that was on my device. Even TWRP is unable to decrypt now. Any help is appreciated.

I have same issues as well. Did you manage to find a solution?
I tried to flash whatever LineageOS ROM was available but I was unable to decrypt as after a time I got message that the encrypted block might have been corrupted since my password was correct it can not decrypt full data and partial decryption was not possible.
I had to WIPE ALL and start afresh again. But I would suggest you to try different versions (different build dates) of Stock LineageOS ROM to try to decrypt data before you give up.
Last resort if WIPE ALL and start afresh as there is no way that I know of for partial decryption or external backup and decryption.

would you mine explain some more about WIPE ALL? Like in formatting? Because format is no used for me and I did make sure there is no password.
Wipe All means: Wiping Data + Cache + Internal Storage
(complete fresh start of ROM without anything on phone, similar to formatting all data on device or factory reset on stock decies)
Well you should only do Format data only as last resort to make phone usable since decryption is no more possible.

Well I tried everything you mentioned and nothing work. All i got is a while bunch of "error opening" "permission denied" with my internal storage. And bootloop if i install anything not Lineage based
Well installing other ROMs other than official LineageOS ROMs will not work. It seems either your storage has been corrupted like mine was.
If that is the case then formatting data and storage could be the only solution to make your phone work again, but that will mean you are starting from fresh on your phone without any data. (YOU WILL LOSE ALL ENCRYPTED DATA.)
In LineageOS you have to completely wipe data to remove encryption. There's no other way.
hi, just want to know why my phone data are crypted....never put a code on it....
I just try twrp at startup, it ask me a password for user 0, password I never enter, so I pass and go to format data, but got error 255, unable to wipe data, unable to format to remove encryption...I go to mount and can mount almost all partitions execept data..I return to wipe and got multiple errors with same result...
when I go on twrp in data/media/0 I have many folders with numbers and letters..
so on fastboot I set fastboot erase userdata so start again setup and on TWRP, I can mount data partition but can't still not format data, got error 255 and in data/media got same strange folders.
how can I solve it..thanks
maybe important thing, my twrp recovery is not installed, I just boot on it with fastboot..
try to boot to system, set a pin code.
go back into twrp and then you should be able to decrypt with the pin you added.

Hi, Orangefox can't wipe data, it gives me this error: unable to mount storage. I think the problem is that the data partition is somehow encrypted, but i haven't encrypted it so now I can't decrypt it because I don't have the password. I've already tried with the unlock password but it fails. I know the easy solution would be to format all data including internal storage but I would like to avoid that possibility. Do you know what can I do?
(The CrDroid rom I was installing before this problem occurred is in bootloop, so I can't access it).
Have you tried other recovery? TWRP, PE, Miui.
TWRP tells me the same thing: Unable to mount storage
I think the only solution is to format data. Is there a way to recover the files? I have no backup.
Data return is possible. Formatting must not be done and you must load the ROM from which the data came. That is, the last working ROM. After running it, then back up the data and only then try a new ROM where the data will be formatted.

How do i load the rom? I can't install it with TWRP, it says:
Devices on super may not mount until rebooting
recovery.
To flash additional zips, please reboot recovery to
switch to the updated slot.
I've tried also with OrangeFox, same error
OK, the problem was relative to the A/B slots: by switching to the other slot I managed to install and access to the rom. Now I can recover the files, so I can format data without problems. Thank you!
