Well, I've been using third party launchers since a long time, with a few problems that I solved but is something I can't get any solution. The issue happen with most of the launchers. I like Nova, don't get me wrong, but I like to test the new one that's get out and now I'm using Belle Launcher (is in XDA), I like it a lot! The thing is that as most of the launchers I have very annoying problems with the multitask window. For example, if I open the gallery and go to the multitask window I just see one window, the gallery, but it isn't the home screen. In fact if I touch home button I go back to gallery instead of home screen, I must touch it twice to go there but even then, in multitask windows still gallery only. In that way the launcher is allowing to have the app that I opened in cache...is there any solution?

Are you using one of the Android Pie ROMs? If so, there's currently no solution. I'm a long time Nova Prime user, and if you search on the Le Max 2 Development Telegram channel you'll see the advice (from the developers) is to NOT use a third party launcher. Not that I blame them, they've got enough to work on already.

My wife recently got a Vibrant, and she hates the bottom 4 required buttons on her home screens (Phone/Contacts/Messaging/Apps). She does not text, and wants to get rid of the messaging button. Is rooting the phone and installing a custom theme the only way to do this?
Also, what is the "lag fix" supposed to fix? She hasn't complained much about anything, and I haven't messed with her phone enough to see any serious problems with it.
EDIT: Also, what does having a "hardware locked" phone mean, what does it prevent you from doing, and how can I figure out if my wife has a hardware locked phone?

First off, I think if this is your wifes phone and you and she are unfamilar to modding its best to do as little as possible to get what you need. That said, if she hasn't complained about lag, don't worry about it. If you are interested, then lag is created because samsung uses a proprietary file system rfs which is a little slow. Lag fixes try to remedy this by either adding an ext2/3 partition, or totally replacing the file system with ext4. This last is for advanced users and I would not recommend.
Hardare locked refers to some devices that are unable to get to recovery or download mode by using the volume buttons and power button. There are threads to explain how to do it. Use them to see if your wifes is one.
As for the big ticket of your thread customizing your home screen, there are numerous launchers on the market. I like launcher pro, and adw launcher. Im pretty sure you dont even need to root to use them, there are free versions in the market. Good luck.

I am not new to modding. I have pretty seriously modded my Evo 4G (custom kernels, deodexed ROM, customized themes, etc...). It's just I am unfamiliar with the Vibrant and its root process, and I don't want to do anything to it until I know the ins and outs of messing around with it.
If I can mod her home screen without rooting, then that's probably as far as I'll go. However, I've told her to look over the themes here to see if she finds one she likes, and I'm fairly certain I need to root to install a custom theme if she decides there's one she likes.

Ok then, most theming i've seen on the vibrant is for the status bar, and not the bottom. Most roms end up supplementing touchwiz launcher with something like launcher2 or adw launcher. You might want to take a look at eugene373's frankentwiz. Hes modified touchwiz so you can edit the bottom dock and app drawer. Or if you dont want to go that far he posted the default launcher in the dev section that you Adb push to system/app its literally the default launcher from the g1 days. Its what I use.

I got it for my girls Mytouch Slide. She doesn't need root. I doubt your wife needs the lagfix... the phone is fine just how it is for normal use.

Considering the most she uses it for is to play Sims and other games (stealing my phone when she wants to play Angry Birds), and for surfing the web, I think she'll be fine without root, just using a new launcher. She just really didn't like the fact that 1/4th of her bottom dock was taken up with a useless icon.

You don't need a new launcher to replace the sms icon at the bottom of the dock. Open the app drawer-> menu-> view type-> customizable grid-> menu-> edit ...
Then you can drag any other icon on the dock to replace the sms icon. Press the back button to confirm, then you can switch back to alphabetical grid.

Thanks for that tip. Although I think I will be getting her ADW Launcher anyways since it's much more customizable, and not as overloaded as TouchWiz. Plus I found a theme for ADW I think my wife will love.
Just as a follow on, is it normal for you to have to hit the soft buttons (menu, home, back, search) multiple times to get them to actually register? I've noticed that if they are not lit up, I have to hit them once or twice to get them to light up, and then again to do the action I was trying to do.

When I first got my vibrant I did, but I think it's because the touch sensors are very specific. As in, you have to hit the home button dead on for it to register. Once I got used to the button locations its not been a problem.
Btw, if you touch anywhere on the screen the buttons will light up ... Helpful when its really dark.

all you have to do is....
1.go into app drawer
2.press menu and select view type
3.then select customizable grid
4. then go into your app drawer again and select edit
5.then select and hold an app and drag it in dock where the msg app is
6.and that's it

completely agree with this. You've kinda be dead on or cover the majority of the button. Adw is a great choice. It's an awesome and absurdly customizable home alternative. Plus it's free
Thanks for everyone's help. I ended up going with ADW and the iDroid theme (my wife adores the little android droid mascot). Very easy to setup and looks very nice.
OK, i was trying not to take any updates but i had a few problems with the battery draining fast so i thought it may help me there... care about my battery lasting all day..
anyways...
maybe im missing something but after this last update, i cant use ADW... i can use it but every time i hit the home button i go back to sense.. i dont want to use sense.
i like to use the home button to open my app drawer.. and i hide everything, the taskbar and dock.
i didnt have this "problem" before this last update. just wondering if i am missing something...
normally when you install a diff launcher like this it will ask you what you want to use but it doesnt even ask that now.
anyways... any thoughts?

Not sure why it isn't checking with you on initial install of the HomeScreen replacement, but just install Home Switcher for Froyo off the app market and you can set which one you want it to default to, no matter how many HomeScreen replacement apps you have. And you can switch between them with it any time you like.

has nothing to do with updates, u can use ADW with any update,because its just a launcher.....
all you have to do is go to setting applications, go to htc sense (theres 2, use the one with the sense home screen icon) and hit clear defaults
if you have trouble finding that, just download a free homescreen program, like laucher pro or go launcher. install those, then , when u hit the home button again, it'lls ask you which one to use. choose ADW and click this "remember my choice button". then ADW will stick
i use ADW myself works fine
p.s. then you can delete the launcher pro and go launcher (its only used to bring up the prompt to choose which launcher to use)
p.s.s. the only other way to undo an OTA is to flash the rom with an older one.but you cant do that until you have root and/or s-off)

You have to clear the defaults like the poster above you said it's not the ota.
Also if you installed other apps that mess with the home button it could be on of those as the default. If you install a new launcher or remove and re install adw you will get the prompt again to set your default launcher.

ok, but did you install the other home launchers? (that will force you to select a launcher the next time you hit the home button)
after you install ADW, did you clear the defaults for the sense launcher?
you need to do 1 or both of these things if you want this to work
I'm having some trouble with my launcher of choice, Apex.
Every now and then it will crash, leaving me with a black screen. The screen will remain black and the phone unresponsive for around 10 seconds. Then I'm thrown back to my home screen.
I'm assuming that it's Apex crashing, but there is no error message or dialog box of any kind, so I can't be sure.
This often happens if I click the back button multiple times to get out of an app, or when I am using an app and then click my home button. It does this with many different apps.
Is there any way I can start troubleshooting this? Logs of some kind? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm using apex (pro) and it works fine, maybe you clicking back several times is just making the app FC or just brain-farting android.
I have the Pro version too. And yeah at first I thought it was me causing it, since the last Android phone I had was running Eclair and I thought that maybe ICS doesn't like back button mashing... But the black screen also happens if I background an app using the home key.
It's really a shame because I'm loving Apex.

Hmm well that's really weird. Do a backup in apex, then force stop, clear data, uninstall and then reinstall it. See if you still have the problem. Also, see if the "keep in memory" option is checked, this should prevent things like this, or it having to load again when coming back from another app.
I had the same issues with apex, couldn't figure out what exactly caused the problems...for that reason I'm on go launcher for now.

It seems like this has solved my problem! It was unchecked, so I checked it and now it seems fine! You the man!
Didn´t solve it here, as said above, it is already checked. Maybe an update will solve these problems in near future, it is really sad that apex suffers here.
It appears I spoke too soon, Apex still crashes/freezes for me.
I also tried Nova Launcher and it does the same thing.
I keep very few apps backgrounded, and I have removed a lot of bloatware. My phone should be a lean, mean machine... I guess I just have to live with it, maybe in the future a custom ROM will solve it.
If you guys check your logcat logs, you'll see evidence of apex crashing. I already contacted the developers and they said it's a known issue but are still looking into it. For now I'm using go launcher.. not so smooth, but lots of features
Had the exact same issues, switching to Nova solved the problem for me.

For those who don't know, Backgrounder is an app on jailbroken iPhones since iPhone OS 1.x that allows users to keep an app in the background entirely, meaning that you could be running a process, leave, and it would still run since the app thinks it is still in the foreground.
Why has this not emerged for Android? It seems like if anything, it would have emerged on this platform first.
I think many people would gladly pay for this functionality.

I think you mean to have several process running in the background and switch between these process back and forward, isn't it?
If so, in any opened app, just press on home button, then open another app and then press on home button again. Now to go the previous or the first process, do a long press on home button which will bring you the the recent app menu, choose the app you want that is running on the background

No not the standard multitasking. The kind where if I am playing lets say NOVA, if I press the home button and go to facebook, NOVA would still be running in it's entirety even though it is not on screen.

No that merely pauses the app to run in standby and conserve battery life. BTW I'm on a Nexus 7 so I have a dedicated app switch button
So I guess there is not app that enables such functionality?

Sorry to bump and old thread but I have not seen any full solution to this problem. I came from apple(1 yr. in feb) thinking(more like hoping) that the android fanboys were right in saying "android has REAL multitasking, apple has *asterisk", Also i got tired of apples BS, minimal upgraded on new phones, plus the Note 3's pen is the ****, (though they did the same thing apple did with the Note 4) but back on topic.
Today I found a wifi faker for android but still not backgrounder fully working. I just need the ability to keep a app, that's not music related, working in the background because I only benefit from it being open as its automated to rack-up points while i do other stuff, usually less labor intensive. Plus I dont know what it is but i just have a fundamental problem with apps staying open when i close them even though i am fully aware it takes up no processes and is fully battery efficient. But there are apps for that, but still no way to keep and app fully running in the background.
Any help is appreciated, Thank You
P.S. I have seen this tread MultiTasking Breakthrough! but cant really make heads or tales of it.
Just wondering if anyone here has tried using Action, Apex, or Nova launcher with HAM2? I've installed both Action and Apex launchers and neither one will run reliably. With Action, it did run for about two weeks, then just stopped. I re-installed it but it never ran properly again. Periodically the app drawer would disappear, and the apps on the home screen would re-arrange themselves. The list of apps that can be accessed by swiping from left to right also disappeared. Apex launcher worked for a short while (meaning a few minutes) and then the widget that I have on the home screen disappears and the apps on the screen re-arrange themselves. Some apps show up on a different screen. If I leave home page and open an app or if I open an pp on the home page, it depends on how I return to the home page as to whether the widget disappears and the apps re-arrange themselves. If I return to home page by pressing the home icon, then everything is changed when I return. If I return to home page by pressing return button, then everything remains the same.
My Ascend Mate 2 is Model MT2L03 with 16 GB internal storage and a 32 GB SD card. It has Android version 4.3, Emotion 2.0 Lite, and Kernel version 3.4.0. Apart from the launchers mentioned above and hiding the notification bar to provide more space on the screen, I have not made any changes. I'm not sure whether the problem I'm having with the two launchers is unique to my phone or whether it's a problem with all HAM2's. Would appreciate any feedback.
I have been using Nova since day one with my HAM2, and I have had no issues at all. Runs super smooth, and everything works as it should. Maybe give Nova a try.

It's possible the power saving modes in the HAM2 are causing issues. Try using the phone on regular power mode, not endurance or smart.

OK Netrunner, thanks for the tip. I've been considering switching to normal mode anyway. This gives me a good reason to do so. I just switched the phone to normal mode. I'll post here if I have any problems with Nova launcher. Thanks.

make a backup of your current rom before you try the following:
1) reset the app data for your launcher and redo it
2) try a factory reset.

I'm using a MT2L03 on 4.3 and have been using Nova since nearly day one myself, haven't had any issues. Sometimes I forget I have a launcher and that it's not stock built into the phone, haha I had issues with Apex at first too, + it was lagging, guess it doesn't like to play nice with our phones.
