Hello.
I'm using a German version of the Galaxy S3 with stock 4.1.1 ROM.
I own it since few days, coming from iPhones and I'm still learning how to use it.
One very useful thing I've found is the blocking mode. I use it at night to stop notifications sound and to permit only my family calls to go through.
Whatsapp notifications, though, are still coming through and I'm forced to manually reduce the notifications volume to zero.
Is it a bug or am I missing something?
I've tried setting the blocking mode with both time range and "always", but no differences at all.
Thanks.
I was woken up this morning by whatsapp messages, so if anyone has an answer it'd be appreciated.
I am having the same problem.. i think the problem is with whatsapp itself it must be a bug as when u go to notification settings the "ringer" whats comes up as default tone not the notification tone.
hope this get resolved quick! i have emailed whatsapp but got standard email template... delete app ... reboot re install ..etc
No one has a solution?
I have the same problem but a month or two before it did worked. I guess that maybe an update of whatsapp has disabled this. It very annoying waking up because of that horrible whatsapp noise.
Update
Just installed JB 4.1.2 and the problem is still there.
So it seems to be a Whatsapp problem, and it's a very stupid management of the notifications.
The notifications should be managed by the system and if the system says "shut up" ALL notifications should comply.
For me this is a point in favor of iOS.
P.S.: not a fan boy of course. I own both devices and it's normal I compare them.
WhatsApp uses a different method to sounf notificiations, this is why it can sound notifications even playing music (other apps would mute/pause the music for the notification)
I guess someonr could patch WhatsApp, my smali knowledge isn't that good to do it myself.

I understand, but if Google implements a kind of "do not disturb" mode it should know that some apps can use music as notification sound and block that too...
Problem lies with whatsapp. I did mail them about it, no response :/ m forced to put my phone on silent always :/

[SOLUTION] Blocking Mode WhatsApp Sounds
First of all, I do know that this is a fairly old thread, HOWEVER, it is still the first result on google for "blocking mode whatsapp", so i figure this is where people look. So i hope you will forgive me.
I have found a solution to the very annoying problem which many people seem to suffer from.
I have found a way to include the whatsapp sounds under the android blocking mode.
You will need the LightFlow app, (which i believe is a must have app for the S3 anyways (OP said he uses a s3)).
after you got light flow:
1: In What's app:
- disable notification sounds for incoming messages(not in light flow, in whats app). set it to silent or disable at all
2: The go to light flow and:
- enable sound notifications for whats app
- set what ever notification sound you would like to have for whats app when blocking mode is NOT enabled
- under Sounds-->Volume control method-->tick "Android standard notification volume"
Now it you enable blocking mode, it also blocks what's app sounds and if blocking mode is disabled, everything is normal.
hope that helps....took me quite a while to figure it out.
edit: oh and i do not have any affiliation with the light flow app or their developers!!! i just used it for changing lights and came across the sound feature by chance!!!
its a shame. other blockers block it, why can't the native JB also do it?
furstrating. didn't want to install another software on the phone when the block mode works so well, except for whatsapp of course.
Does this exist with 4.2.2 as well?

Yeah, I've got a Nexus 4 on 4.2.2 and the issue is on that as well. It's a problem with the way whatsapp handles notifications, not the Android firmware version.
Thanks Tyler D for the solution, will be testing this later today.
I am experiencing the very same issue on my Samsung Galaxy S4 running 4.2.2.
Do you have any news? I tried to email whatsapp support a few days ago but I am still waiting their reply.

Hi,
I just got a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 recently and am having problems with push notifications for apps such as Whatsapp, Facebook messenger, LINE and so on. I have spent hours trying all the suggestions out there multiple times as to how to fix it but it still doesn't work. This includes:
1: Disable power saving mode.
2: Disable 'destroy activity' function.
3: Check Notification settings
4: Setup notifications for each App in settings.
5: Ensure app has notifications enabled.
6: Enable Autostart
7: Disable data saver and enable dual data on all apps.
8: Commit apps to memory.
9: Customise power saving settings.
Even after doing all this, I am still unable to receive messages and calls from apps in real time. I use another phone of mine to call myself literally 5 seconds after closing the app and still my Xiaomi phone does not register the call until I manually open the app and get a missed call.
Can someone please help me with this. Thanks.
I enabled Autostart for all the messaging apps and apps i need to run in the background and everything is working great for me.
I get calls from whatsapp all the time and everything working great.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
I have literally every single app enabled for Autostart just in case but still don't receive anything until I open the app manually. Tried reinstalling the apps and rebooting multiple times too.
With what apps you are having this problem? Me for example I don't have any problem with whatsapp but with Skype sometimes I don't get notifications because miui kills the process in the background which is very annoying.
I hope xiaomi will fix it in miui 9 (if we'll ever get this update on our rn4 anyway).

I tried the steps in this guide and everything is working for me. It was mainly gmail that wasnt notifying of new mails unless I opened the app itself.

It works sometimes for Whatsapp and LINE but only sometimes, which doesn't make any sense. I'll get a notification for a message normally once and then won't get anything for awhile and be bombarded with missed messages when I open the app manually again. Doesn't seem to ever work for Gmail or Facebook messenger.

have you tried going to developer settings and disable "MIUI Optimizations" ?
For WhatsApp I just go to recents and lock the app.

Welcome to MIUI notification problems...
I sure wish I had of read about these problems before I bought this piece of **** redmi. There literally is nothing that fixes it.
i just moved from Sony to Huawei last week . i got Mate 10 pro
device is nice and battery is great and fast and everything was perfect with me from the first look.
then by installing my daily use apps i noticed some problems are showing and not only me as i sow some users here are complaining it .
it is killing all apps and get no advantage of any app i want it to push a notification and reminder for me .
actually any app i use for reminders and notification are not working perfectly
for example i have tried 3 apps for prayer reminders and non of them worked for a complete day , it works once and the next it gets another delay , and last it gets missed .
also i have a call recorder which is working perfectly on my Xperia Z3 but here it is not recording every single call .
also i have app called BlipBlip for hourly peeping ... same issue .
any to-do app , caller identifier (truecaller,numberbook ....)
i tried to make the Ignore battery optimization
i changed the settings in Launch battery
still no luck
any permanent solution please ?

Probably a doze problem. I heard that is an oreo problem. I have the same issue with my op5. Probably they will fix it with updates.

If you enable Power saving mode then your device automatically kills background applications.
Try by disable power saving mode.
In settings, You will also manage that which apps show notifications and which are not.
All customization of notifications are avaliable in setting e.g. Notification on lock screen, notification on status bar, status bar icon. Hope it helps. Hit Thankx

of course i am not using the power save mode ,
i put the app in the "Ignore battery optimization" list .
i put the app in the manual option in "Launch" and allowed everything to run in background .
i enabled the app in the n"Notification Management" section
what else i can do to prevent the device from killing the app ?
still i have this problem from time to time .
note : yesterday the app worked perfectly and i have got all notification and i thought i have solved the problem finally ,
but today it comes back again and start worry again .

Have you tried by factory data reset?
I mean hard reset through stock recovery.
Be sure to remove your id otherwise you device stick in FRP lock.
Happens for me still with Disa (my facebook and sms messaging app).
It's really ****ty.
This is a hard one for sure! Is it Android or is it Huawei? I think it's a combination of both! We all shouted praise when we first heard of Doze...but now we curse the day we heard of it! LOL
On most of my phones I have had issues with Gmail notifications not coming in as quickly as I thought they should, and I still experience slight delays on my Mate 10 (non-pro) version. However, it seems that after I open Gmail for the first time in the day and get my first notification then it works OK for the rest of the day. My texts, using Textra, always come in right away and I have both apps set up the same way on the phone pertaining to battery, background, and notifications. So Gmail is the harder one to get working as it should. But is it Doze, or is it Huawei and EMUI? Personally, I think it should be left up to one or the other but NOT both! And whichever one implements a battery saving feature should provide CLEAR and CONCISE instructions on making it work the way we want it to. Huawei has implemented several convoluted methods to the way battery saving and notifications work and they are not mutually exclusive...in other words, they can conflict with each other...that is bad enough. But when you layer this ON TOP of Android's Doze (which has no apparent way to configure it) this just leads to a mess in trying to figure out what is causing the delays! So then, I feel that Android to needs to take control of this issue and force all OEM's to follow a standard for battery control so that it is the same across the board no matter what phone we are using.

This is not an Android doze problem. Its Huawei battery management process killing all running apps. I had a sony xz premium running Oreo and not a single problem. Now I'm using Pixel 2 XL and not a signle problem. Its definitely Huawei that restricts notifications due to battery management. This is what stopped me getting the Mate 10 pro. Awesome phone but with notifications not coming through makes the phone useless
I also had the XZ Premium and I agree that it did not have this issue. But my Mate 10 (non-pro) really does not have it that bad. I really do not even notice it. I do shut off my phone every night. I have said in many different forums that I feel that a daily restart of all cell phones is good for keeping things running smoothly. Takes a minute of your time while brushing your teeth in the morning. Maybe this will help someone with more serious issues??
cmon people ...it's not that hard
...go to settings - battery - launch -
from there you can disable or enable specific battery management for each app to be able to launch, be launched by other apps and run in background
they are set to to be managed automatically by default, any app you are having issues being killed just open the launch settings and set them manually.
I set this up when i got the phone and i never have any issues with missing any notifications that i want to see plus my battery lasts for 2-3 days.

The problem with your reasoning is that Gmail is not listed there! This is the only one that seems to delay for me, but as I mentioned it is not that bad. Then again, I am not waiting for, or getting, anything in my personal email that needs super immediate attention. But there may be someone who needs their Gmail to notify them as soon as they receive an email. Thus the complaint!
Welcome the sh*ty world of Huawei

I'm not surprised with Huawei and notifications problems.... This 2 goes together.
First with Mate 8 the first 4 months, then with Mate 9 the first 2 months and now with Mate 10 pro as you mentioned
To be honest I have Mate 10 (no pro) and from the first day I didn't have any problem with "stock mail app, Facebook, Facebook messanger, Viber, Twitter, Instagram, whatsup, weather widget"
But please try this one.... It was the solution I follow with Chinese version of Mate 9 : Open every app that you want instant notification and "locked" it to recent apps and keep it there.... If you have already try this then there isn't much more to do so think of a hard reset or change device.... As for Android 8 I have a s9+ together with Mate 10 and both are manage notifications perfectly....

That is an interesting proposition! I have never used that particular lock before...in fact I can honestly say that at first I didn't know what you were talking about. I guess I never paid any attention to the little lock on those previously opened apps. Not sure if it will work yet or not but I did mention that after I opened Gmail the first time it appeared as if the notifications came in properly. So if this works then I should not have to open Gmail first thing in the morning to get the notifications flowing! Thank you so much for this suggestion! :good:
I've been interested in using an SMS app called QKSMS, but it did not appear to support custom notification sounds. The dev for the app showed up in a Reddit thread and I asked him about it. He blamed the phone. Here's what he said:
"Prior to Android Oreo, apps had full control over the notifications. If an app wants to be able to use the Oreo APIs however, then it must forfeit control for most of the notification customization over to the system. That's why on your Mate 10 it takes you to the system settings screen to manage QKSMS' notifications, and on your HTC 10 it's handled by the app itself
Unfortunately, there's no way around this, as far as I'm aware. It's really strange though that your phone doesn't let you select a notification sound option - it might not let you control the sound per notification channel and just use the system default, which would be really unfortunate."
Anybody have more insight into this? Do our phones really not support custom ringtones in 2018?
I installed the QKSMS app on my HTC10 and it worked perfectly, ringtones and all.
I've also found that the Android Messages app, like QKSMS, does NOT allow me to set custom ringtones.

That's exactly what I'm trying to do. It works with Textra and with the stock Huawei messaging app, but not with QKSMS or Android Messages. I mentioned this to the QKSMS dev and this was his response:
"The reason it works with Textra is because they are targetting an older version of Android when they build their app, which means they're allowed to use the previous system for notifications.
This works as a temporary solution but this prevents the developer from being able to support any new APIs that are released, and eventually Google will block updates that aren't targetting a recent enough version of Android"
You're absolutely correct. This is a function of the Mate 10 software and quite annoying. I found a workaround through the app, AutoNotification. If you install that, and then go to "Notification Categories", it brings up all your installed apps and, voila, lets you set your notification sound choice. Make sure you opt out AutoNotification from battery optimization though.

Emui 9 fixes this on my Mate 10 I'm glad to say....
Okay it's been a week with this beauty and I am really liking it. But one of the super annoying things is the notification part. On my Galaxy Note 8 I had always on display and this phone has something similar too called screen clock. But the problem with that is, it doesn't display all the notifications. It just displays missed calls, text messages and we chat. I tried everything possible but no luck with the WhatsApp notification. I have tried the external always on display app but that drains a lot of bettery. So anyone here with any solution for this?
And there are hardly any discussions on this thread, was the sales that bad for this phone?
If you have Chinese version you're going to struggle and be very frustrated very quickly.
Oppo created what should have been phone of the year but then they royally screwed it by restricting app notifications to only 5 apps at one time.
You can only auto start 5 apps and will have to open the other apps to see if you have received any notifications!
No way to show whatsapp notification on native aod.

Oppo Find X whatsapp problems
So I have an Oppo find x together with a Xiaomi MIX 3.
I've got the chinese rom version of the Find x with 128 gb rom and 8gb ram.
Yesterday I wanted to try it out for a bit but I was getting some trouble with the Whatsapp app.
So let's explain: You get a notification from someone, so you go to the app as usual, you open the chat and start making a reply on his or her message.
(her's the problem) You stay in that chat, the person is typing a reply on you again, sending it in your chat wich is still opened by you. And you still get a notification from that chat where you at. when you go back to your conversations list you also will see the chat as not opened because there is a 1 on the chat.
I really don't get it because normally you need to get a notifiction from chats where you are not at, not from the ones you have allready opened on your screen.
Does anyone have a solution for it?
