[Problem] Package Installer overlays UI - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As soon as I press "install", package installer seems to freeze (no progress-bar about install status - though it actually does install the .apk), and remains as an overlay, which can't be closed. I can access the notification drawer, swiping up from home to access recents works, and if I switch to any app, the apps jump to the front and are fully working. I can also use my swipe up/down, tap gestures (NovaLauncher) and launch things from (now invisible) icons. Basically everything seems to work correctly, except the Package Installer screen overlaying everything.
Only a restart seems to fix it (temporarily until I install another .apk)
What I've tried already:
force-closing Package Installer, deleting it's cache&data
restarting SystemUI from within Substratum (no themes applied)
rebooting into recovery and wiping caches
uninstalling Nova, switching launchers, reinstalling Nova
searching the forum
flipping my device off multiple times with great intense
Is there anything else I could try (except uninstalling every app chronologically reversed, one by one)?
Thanks in advance for any helping suggestion!

Hey, I'm facing the exact same issue. I was wondering if you've found any working solution.
Can't seem to find any upon googling.

[Q] Viper 2.1.1 - hidden apps randomly reappear / no cursor keys on HTC soft-keyboard

Hi there,
actually almost since the beginning with Viper 2.1.1 I have a few very strange annoyances:
1) when I hide a few apps inside the app-drawer they seem to be hidden first ... but after a while (not even a reboot needed) a couple of those randomly reappear in the app-drawer instead of staying hidden. the reappearing apps not even needed to be started inbetween. some stay hidden, but at least half of them just keep popping back <- i use the "hide app" feature to clean my drawer from those apps that i put on my homescreens separately already.
2) somewhere in the Viper settings there was the option to enable/disable the arrow-keys on the std onscreen keyboard. it just doesn't seem to have any persistant effect for me?! - neither enabled or disabled ... in 90% of all apps (needing keyboard input) the arrow keys are just NOT there even when enabled. only a very few apps like the build-in webbrowser seem to allow the cursor keys to be seen.
thanks for your help :fingers-crossed:
... not even anyone any idea on this?
sry to bump ... but no one any ideas on this?
I too am wondering about the arrow keys not showing up in anything other than stock apps like Internet, Messaging, etc. I don't remember if they showed up in other apps when I was stock. It would be nice to have since I tend to use them a lot when they are available.
For the un-hiding apps in the app drawer, I don't think I've experienced that. I just hid a few then rebooted, they were all still hidden. I will keep an eye on it to see if they unhide. I am on the latest version, Viper 2.2.0.
Do you ever get random reboots?
thanks for checking ... random reebots? i don't think so ... appart maybe from 2 unexpected ones in 2 months or so
They are all still hidden after a day. You could try flashing 2.2.0.
might depend also on other factors. i have like 100 apps installed xD ... and 60'ish hidden (as they are in folders on the different home-screens) ... so i prefer to have them hidden in the drawer. as for viper2.20 ... it needs a _full wipe_ and that's more hassle then i'm currently intending to spend so i'm gonna wait for the next big update with JB i think (or the Infernal+ maybe, if they get the cam working).

HELP: Disable Swipe Status Bar

Using: EnSec Enhanced Security + Operative w TWRP. WP8 Launcher
I checked the "Always show statusbar" option in Swipe Status Bar. It works, shows the status bar constantly, BUT... Now I can't launch any applications except for the ones that are linked in the main launcher screen. When I swipe right to the drawer, tapping any app has no effect. It seems like it's blocking applications from either detecting screen taps or opening at all.
Even in the few I can launch, like Settings, it doesn't detect when I tap any of the menu options. I can scroll up and down, and pull down the status bar, but I cant make the SSB control panel open again to disable the option.
I tried booting into safe mode, but it still launches SSB so the problem persists. I tried changing to Smart Launcher, same problem.
Is there any way to prevent Swipe Status Bar from starting up?

Same problem here, except I stayed in the SSB settings long enough to discover that unchecking that check box again is one of the things that having it checked prevents you from doing. Long story short, I think this has probably made the decision for me whether or not to switch from EnSec+Operative to Loki's new ROM...because I am not sure there's any way out of this without flashing.
I had the same issue,
Only thing I could do was open up play store and uninstall.
It took forever to figure it out and took many tries till it finally registered my clicking.
If all else fails, you may need to wipe the watch via recovery and start over.
I have since stopped using the app as I never want to go through that nightmare again.

How do I get Swipe Status Bar to work?
Launch Swipe Status Bar
Select the first two options
Done

Now your only options are to either factory reset in TWRP or flash back to stock and start over.

Bummer.
Not sure the quote was relevant.
Should have checked the app's page when I saw that feature though:

added ability for permanently visible status bar (BETA - back button do not work!)

...Granted, it doesn't mention anything else not working, but that would probably have been enough to keep me from experimenting, even though it still wouldn't have led me to think that checking the box would make it impossible to uncheck the box...

Found another way!
...For those who are remotely comfortable with adb, anyhow.
adb shell 'pm clear cz.chladek.swipe_status_bar'
This is essentially a force-stop and clear app data on Swipe Status Bar. Only works if you already had usb debugging enabled or find a way to enable it, of course.
Thanks for the tip Kilroo, but it was too late for me. I went TWRP and wiped it. Yeah, it cost me a lot of customizations gone, but at least I didnt hand anything there that wasn't backed to the cloud.
One silver lining: Now I get to rebuild the launcher, icons, widgets etc in a bit more usable form. AND I'm staying away from that SWB setting until is out of beta! Thanks for the help, all!

I was afraid of that. Well, maybe if anyone else makes the same mistake it will help them.
I'm still trying to figure out whether I want to go from EnSec+Operative to the new Unified Rom doohickey or not, since I no longer have to redo everything regardless.

Almost all apps (including launcher) crash

Hey all,
Just got my new OnePlusX and the first time I turned it on it prompted all the set up screens. I had to skip through them all because the keyboard would not stay open. It would open and then immediately minimize. Not a great start but no problem, I'll add my accounts and connect to wifi later.
Once I get into the 'home screen' I could see my status bar at the top but no icons and no way to access the app draw. I pressed the capacitive buttons and opened the notification slider which both worked and eventually got into the play store. From here I installed an app or two and got prompted to do a system update, which I did.
After the update I was hoping my launcher would work.. it didn't. The home screen is a black screen with the status bar at the top and no icons - the home button seems to do nothing when I'm in an app and press it.
I installed a third party launcher which worked - I now have a home screen and app draw. However, after opening an app, it crashes after a second or two (chompSMS does this as well as messenger, phone and contacts which are stock apps).
Does anyone have any information about this, what can I do here?
I know one option might be flashing a custom rom but being a brand new phone that should most definitely not be something I have to do to be able to call and message people..
Update: I ran a factory reset and all problems seemed to be resolved now. Not sure what was going on but I guess something happened that a reboot couldn't fix. I'll leave this post in case it helps others.
Have you done a factory reset after the system update??

swipe up for app drawer not working

I have TF300 with Katkiss 7.1 recently installed. All seemed to be working fine. Last night I wanted to try 'night mode' . Not seeing it in settings, I installed a bluelight filter app.
Right after installation and turning it on, I found that the navigation bar changed from on the left: 'back', 'home' and 'overview' , to having 'back' on left with an up carat to left of it only when on home screen, 'home' and 'recent on left, and on right: 'overview' and 'previous app'.
Also, I have lost the ability to go to apps drawer by swiping up from bottom. I don't know any way to access any apps other than those on home screen!!
Uninstalled the 'bluelight filter' but that didn't change anything.
I have used the 'system UI tuner' to move all buttons back to left, but still have that carat to left of back button.
Tried powering down and restarting, and booting to recovery.
I installed Nova launcher. Swipe worked once, then failed next time I tried to use it.
1. What is the carat to left of back button about?
2 Is there no other way to access app drawer then 'swipe up'? Is there a way to get 'swipe up' to work again?

Seems like the app corrupted something in the system, best thing to do now is to dirty flash your current rom, just flash and wipe cache and Dalvik cache only then reboot.

I sort of thought I might have to reflash. unfortunately, it hasn't helped. I flashed the 7.1 ver 20 over ver 19, along with supersu and gapps pico. still can't access apps drawer, and carat remains next to back button.
i have installed Nova launcher. set it to use desktop icon to access app drawer . this seems to work. and the carat is gone.. what is the carat about?
any idea what the carat to left of back button is about? just curious.
Unless someone has a better idea, I guess i'll have to wipe, format, etc. then have to reinstall all apps. that's a pain.

Question Recent App Button with 3rd Party Launcher

Hi! I received my Oppo Find N in the mail a week ago and with the help of all the information on this forum I've been able to pull all bloatware, install Google play store, and replace the default launcher. I am using the Microsoft Launcher and everything is working great aside from one function, I can't seem to get the recent apps button to work. The home button and back button work just fine. I've checked access, accessibility options, restarted, cleared launcher cache, cleared phone cache, turned off animation scale, installed 3rd party apps and to no avail, the recent apps will not come up. If I hold the recent apps button it does go into split screen mode as it should. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Any ADB commands I can throw at it? Help will be much appreciated.
This may be related to Android 13, which my phone was upgraded to before I bought it. Looking for options to downgrade. Will post a separate question about that.
Is there still anybody using buttons in navigation bar instead of gestures?
