Hey All,
I'm currently using the g2 and it finally broke on me and I've been thinking about getting the g5 (t mobile version) off swappa. But I'm trying to get a sense of how development is working.
I've been trying to read through some of the threads here, but there don't seen to be a lot of guides. It seems like tmobile (h830) and the h850 only have roms available. When I looked, it seemed as simple as getting twrp running. But when I looked into that, I couldn't find a thread about h830 twrp. I found something about unlocking the bootloader, but that also seemed to be only possible if I happened to get a phone that hasn't been updated.
I guess I'm asking, if I pick up a g5 and it's been fully upgraded, is it possible to downgrade, unlock the bootloader, and flash twrp? Or do I need to try to find a specific version of the g5. Are there any guides that I seem to have missed that go through this process?
Hi
I am a G5 H850 owner and on Nougat 7. I have unlocked bootloader and TWRP and root. All done while on Nougat. Hope this helps.

Don't man... I have an G5. And it has a lot issues with basic stuff like GPS. Go for an Oneplus if needed. I have already listed my G5 on sale. Just my 50 cents of advice
i’m using a G5 (H850) since a few month without any problem. No screen ghosting / no GPS trouble! Nougat is running well ( without root or unlocked BB!) so far. But it seems to be a little bit difficult to get a 100% error free unit. Until now, it looks like, i have one of it. I pray ,that it will stay.
Why not get the h850 it's LTE works everywhere afaik

Yeah I kind of want a oneplus, but I also need to buy two phones right now. One for me and my gf. Trying to keep it under $500 for both and a used one plus is still pretty expensive in comparison to a used G5.

Nice, now I'm a little more hesitant picking one up though. Didn't know there were so many problems with it...
bug-list in short form:
* GPS problems because the pins for contacting the antenna are sometimes a little bit slack
* Screen sometimes will have a little ghosting (like AMOLED ) But less than Samsung S7 will have!
* Battery should have 2.800mah but this could be different +/- 15%
* the battery compartment cover includes the microfon too! Sometimes this cover has bad contact
* it is difficult to get a tempered glass screen-protector for it because the screen is bent
* Nougat update sometimes seems to be buggy
see here for more informations -> http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/lg-g5-problems/
but as i wrote, my phone is error free until now.

As far as your question goes, yes you can get a t-mobile h830 (g5) on any version of software and you will be okay. If it's still on MM, you can use the modified tot flashing method or dirty cow. If it's on Android N, you will need to use dirty cow and if it's above 20A, you have to downgrade to 20A. Look in the T-mobile section for the guides on how to unlock your bootloader and get twrp and root (which voice you need to view will depend on what version of software your phone has on it). As far as development, there's one stock based rom (fulmics) and a couple non stock ROMs (LOS, RR, DU and one or two more) for our phone. As far as the issues with the phone that other people have posted about, it really just depends on the phone you get. Me and my gf both have g5s and neither of us have any issues, but many others have had problems. Anyways, if you get the t mobile version you can unlock your bootloader, get twrp, root and custom ROMs if you want. Hopefully this helps.
For me lg g5 its working great no bugs on gps not anything [emoji3]

Thanks for the info! I was reading on some of the non-stock roms that camera quality isn't as good as fulmics, but I didn't know how much of a difference that was. Do you have any experience with that?

As far as camera quality, any room other than true stock will have some quality issues or issues of not having all of the features that stock camera has. Even on fulmics ROM camera has issues with manual mode I believe. But thats just how custom ROMs go. As far as quality difference between stock and quality on custom ROMs, it's not that much. You will notice a difference if you compare pictures from stock to ones from custom ROMs, although quality on custom ROMs it's fine to me. Again though, you can always dual boot stock and custom ROMs to have the best of both worlds

That just means it locked to T-mobile you can get it unlocked for free I think
http://phandroid.com/2016/07/07/how-to-sim-unlock-the-lg-g5/
Do not get it on T-Mobile whatever you do. If you do get the device at all, get either the International version or the H850 model. The bootloader can be unlocked on these, therefore opening up the possibilities.
Don't get wrong, the phone has a lot of great selling points; just keep you're options open or you'll regret it later.
Hope this helps.

I was thinking of starting a YT series called LG G5 Revived. I don't think this phone is that great, but I do think its underrated. Yes or no?

If you get lucky with the version with no issues it's not that bad. The specs are pretty good for this phone, just the build quality not so much. This phone can be bought for $300 and some change.
Honestly go compare this to the new LG 6 and galaxy S8. Pay almost triple with tax for a slight upgrade spec wise? Nah I am cool.

Hey all, I'm curious what you all think about how the LG G5 might compare to a new budget phone like the Moto G5
I just picked up a used G5 on Wednesday for $230.oo. I love it so far. Have no idea what GPS issue they are referring to Because mine is great.
Hello. It's me again, with another part of whole process called "make your smartphone just like you".
I've got this nice and shiny phone for about a month or so, I was able to unlock it on the second try (not sure why myfriends decided to turn it down the first time, but don't think that matters now), now I'll like to install custom TWRP 3.2.1.0. I've read today, that I do not need to make a factory reset after doing so. Is it correct? Is it just a misunderstanding?
Anyway, which custom rom do You consider to be the best? I would of course like to have newest Android, instead of being still in version 7 (which is not bad, but if it could be better, why shouldn't I use it?).
I do not have any specific features that I would like to have, but having plenty of configuration options is always nice.
For other options I do not really have an opinion, what should be important and what should be irrelevant. I've read that You could improve photo quality by using this stuff, but I'm not sure is it true or not. https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/
If it would be possible, I would gladly accept FHD recording in 60 FPS (not sure if this is available in stock) and MAYBE (if possible again) better quality of night photos. Far the most important thing is battery life and no bugs. If the rom is having issues with getting network, gps, bluetooth or anything else, I'm dropping it at once. Also, stability and ability to work without reseting itself or crashing is wanted by me. I've also heard that some mods could be quieter than stock and I would also like to avoid that. And some extra points will be granted for mod WITHOUT most of the google apps, since I'm not using them and actually deleting them from any rooted phone. From what I remember, installing new ones has not been a problem, even on stock phone, but uninstalling them when You get it on start is pain the neck.
Thanks for any help that might be useful!
you've posted thread in wrong neighbourhood
anyways post here https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-4 in order to get more help suggestions regarding Mido
Oh, one more thing - I did not specify it before. My CPU is Snapdragon, so I believe it makes a difference.
OmniROM, NitrogenOS, ResurrectionRemix 6.0 all should be good to go, you can look through the respective threads to see what extra functionality/customization they offer and then decide.
Personally i recommend flashing FrancoKernel over (compatible with all above).
Also flash Nano or Pico Gapps if you want bare minimum google package.
I'm right now on Omni.

An extensive list of Oreo ROMs for mido is here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-4/help/extensive-list-oreo-roms-mido-t3741277
Take your pick. I prefer ROMs based on AOSP-CAF, because they tend to be lean and skinny.
As far as camera is concerned, it all depends on your camera sensor. I have a Samsung sensor, and I find cstark27 mods of GCam very good - see https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-cstark27/
Ok, I'll look into it. Next question – how do I check which camera sensor do I have?

You will need to search the forum for that.
I'm also curious about this. I just ordered a Redmi Note 4 Global, 4/64 (mido) and I'm trying to figure out which Oreo ROM I should go with: Pixel Experience or unofficial LOS 15.1. I'm leaning towards the latter because of that sweet Treble support, but I don't know if it's more stable than Pixel Experience or not. Or if there's a ROM more stable than those two.
I'm interested in installing Magisk, the Xposed Oreo beta, Viper4Android, various Xposed modules and root apps. I want to stay away from SuperSU and SuperUser because they don't pass SafetyNet, AFAIK.

That is good. You may also want to try Arnova's V6 GCam mod. That seems to be even better than cstark27.
I have kept my Note 8 on samfail since its first days. Eventually I have given up hope on any further development or custom firmware options. Now out of frustration I am ready to pull the plug and just go to stock and get OTA updates and be done with it. I used to use root for so many things, mostly blocking ads, using certain apps that needed root, and just to have options and more control over the device that I own. I have stopped looking for anything or trying to stay on top of this device for at least a year, so I dont know what else there is to do with it. Ad blocking these days seems to block everything useful and I would have to whitelist so many things for it and no simple solution like the way it used to be. Now they make rooting impossible and want to charge over a grand for a new smartphone! ugh,end of rant.
Basically my Note 8 is no longer the swiss army knife that previous rooted smartphones have been for me, and I am not using anything currently that need root that i can think of. I dont know if i will ever need root. I have waited this out thinking in the future that I may need to be rooted but I just dont know anymore. Is there any point of keeping this Note 8 rooted anymore? No TWRP, no xposed,no cfw, seems like a waste to me.
Bump...

I´m on bootloader v5 so I couldn`t root it but not missing it at all. In this scenario with no development for snapdragon variant no much to play with. You´ll finally lost updates and security patches and the worst of all probably the best android version with pie.

I am on the same boat. I was waiting for future development, but the lack of it, the 80% battery and so many other things just frustrated the hell out of me. I basically want 3minit battery and Titanium backup in my devices so that when it comes time to twitch devices, I don't have to spend a day or two setting it up app by app. Other than that you are right. Not too many other apps are needed. I switched to a Pixel 3Xl to get unlocked bootloader and root. Now I'm happy with it. Stock Android seems a bit raw and unfinished at first but it does grow on you with time.
Sent from my Pixel 3 XL
I absolutely feel the pain of the OP. I have a S8+ on SamFail bootloader v1. I recently had the option to buy a Note 8 (bootloader v5) and couldn't decide if I wanted to switch from the semi-root of samfail'd S8+ to a stock Note 8...? Like the OP my main use is AdAway and one or two other apps that require root... I'm not sure what options are available for ad-blocking on non-rooted devices and how well they work? but that's a big one for me.
Sadly for USA variant (bootloader locked) devices the rooting/rom'ing party is over. And unless you want to stay a generation behind buying a international Exynos F model is expensive... (last years models are still expensive but usually about half of whatever the current series is)
I just gave up with root on my Note 8 about 2 weeks ago. Ad blocking is missed dearly. Just like others mentioned here, the gains for ditching root on snapdragon notes seem to be worth it. My root experience on this device just ain't the same as other devices I've rooted. My next note will be an exynos device for sure. If you don't mind setting up each app all over again I think going back to stock is good...as much as I hate to say it and be "regular". The extra 20% battery is noticeable in my daily usage too.

I have the note 8 but it's strictly for work, I have the 6t for play and honestly it's still stock, except I flashed it with the international rom from TMobiles. I just use adguard which blocks everything you want and it's a yearly subscription that doesn't cost much check it out.

I have to admit I still play around with my note 8 especially after the pie update looks good

I've been thinking for about 2 years now, since the G925V, it is the way in which we root the device that is the problem. Technically speaking, our actual method of perma-rooting a device is about the same as it was 10 years ago. And since CF stopped working on Samsung Devices, it seems no one else will really. I really think that's the problem, no one ever filled the void left by CF quitting Samsung public dev work.
Is Chainfire's way the only way? Or the only way that's really been developed?
Is there any regret after updating from oreo to pie for you? like call recording? battery usage? app problems?
thank you.
hmm, are you rooted.. adventourous.. backed up your TA partition, still on Oreo.. there a point to this.. call recording don't need it.. problems with apps not with the ones I use, all though I've deleted 98% of the apps I don't use ( reason for the rooted question) I have 2 Sony apps.. camera and the album apps.. the rest are Google apps, the ones that I like.. Battery life for me is fine as I don't game on my phone as I have a large computer for that, so I make it through the day just fine with all the YouTube I like... sot 6 to 7 hrs easy.. any issues, for me none an I was one of the lucky ones who didn't have to wait for pie to be released and it has been fine..
I think the worse part for the XZ1 is the lack of interest.. especially with pie.. no kernels persay or roms.. But you asked a subjective question and folks will give you different answers as per their experience, in the end you won't know till you try it an see, if you don't like it there are methods to go back to a version that you do..

Hey folks!
So I found out a couple days ago that the S20 can have its bootloader unlocked, and there's a version of Lineage for it. Which is super exciting! I got a bit turned off when I saw how expensive the unlock was.
This got me to wondering, which would be better? I know you can adb in and disable/uninstall apps to help reduce Samsung's stock bloatware, which is my biggest issue with their devices. How would this performance be, vs going through the effort of unlocking and reflashing, say, an S20 note with Lineage or another ROM?
Edit: This is assuming bootload unlock works on Verizon phones to begin with, which I'd assume?

Pretty much guaranteed Verizon doesn't let you unlock their bootloader. Have you ever tried lineage on a phone that's not close to stock? Typically you lose a lot of features, a lot of things are broken, it's slower, and battery and camera are worse. Honestly OneUI 3.1 is light years ahead of stock Android (lineage is essentially just vanilla Android these days). Maybe there's a way to do this, but as someone who's had over 50 different phones and have bootloader unlocked and flashed roms on almost all of them, I can assure you the juice is not worth the squeeze. Sorry!

Stock is pretty much what I generally go for, I like to build up instead of work backwards. And the bootloader unlock was in consideration of using that rather expensive unlock service, which I assume works for all model phones?
I ended up going with the S21 Ultra in the end, though. I figured debloating should serve my purposes since I'm not nearly the 'power-user' I used to be.
Thank you for your reply! It is reassuring that I'm probably gonna get what I want out of it.
