Hi,
I just bought a new Honor 8x.
I plug it to my computer via USB, and select the "Transfer files" option.
I can access and copy the files from the phone to my computer just fine, but when i try to copy something to the phone, or create a folder on the phone, it just hangs until I cancel the process.
Any idea what is going on? Some kind of write protection on the device?
Mir
Maybe need to grant permissions or maybe something in development options need to toggle on

I figured out the problem.
It was the faulty data cable. Phew!!!
That was lucky then [emoji16]

I copy files beetwen PC and phone via wi-fi and using 'Ftp server' application from Market. I do not have to use a cable.

My device isn't recognized by my computer. Is the tablet supposed to prompt me to enable USB storage when it's plugged into a computer?
Nope...For me it just shows up in my computer..a new window doesnt pop up like it regularly does for new items inserted.
win xp didn't worked for me either - win 7 worked without any problems
I guess I'm not clear. When I had a rooted NOOKcolor (replaced stock ROM with a Gingerbread one), on the device itself would be a prompt to enable USB storage when it was plugged into a computer. This would appear in the notification bar at the bottom. Once I clicked yes/ok on the device, only then would it appear on my computer as a storage device. This doesn't happen with the Sony. I'm using a Mac.
So, those with a computer that recognizes the device, are you prompted on the tablet to enable USB storage or does it simply appear on your computer as a storage device with no prompting? Again, I'm not referring to your computer prompting you to do anything. I don't have another Honeycomb tablet to answer my own question. Thanks.
Honeycomb doesn't support USB mass storage. It uses MTP instead so things may work
a bit different than you expect. If you're on a Mac you need to download the Android file transfer program from google.

Thanks so much for the quick reply! Now I can stop scratching my head in bewilderment. Now I recall reading about Android file transfer program. I think I downloaded it months ago.
Yep, just checked my Downloads folder. It's been sitting here, never installed.
Hi all
Thanks to those who replied though it would be nice if the post was fully read first... for example, I cannot just connect the phone and copy its content via USB!
Here's the problem:
- phone screen is smashed and shows nothing
- phone still powers up though
- it is not rooted
- it has data on its internal memory that I want to copy
- it has pattern lock activated
- computer (MS Vista OS) recognises a USB devise is logged in, but it doesn't read it as a drive, and KIES just idles... no doubt because I would need to change the phone settings, which I can't do with a smashed screen.
QUESTIONS:
- How can I access phone contents to copy them? (repair shop wants $220)
- I was told using ADN....
I installed SDK Tools but how do I start ADN?
Many thanks
the easiest way might be connect to your computer and copy the contents of the internal sdcard if your computer sees the phone.
If you wan to use odin, use file dump to dump the contents of your phone i believe.
I'm quite the noob when it comes to adb scripting, but I believe that
- start a command line within the directory where ADB executable is located
- type in "adb usb" and it should connect to your phone
- then type "adb pull /mnt/sdcard/* X:\path-to-directory\"
commands without parentheses... I hope it will work
Thanks for the replies
I just amended my original post to say the computer does not recognise the phone when USB connected... KIES tries to connect but fails (no doubt because there is no response from the phone).
Did you try and connect it through mass storage?
Settings - Wireless and networks - USB utilities.
Also try uninstalling kies and reinstall

adb is it!
open a adb shell if you need to navigate around to where things are..
then do a adb pull to get the stuff you want.
Oh yeah, forgot about that, haha. Sorry.

I´m new to this Mtp thing. I had a HOX until now and that was a breeze there.
So how is everybody copying files (non-media files) to sd-card pr ext-sd-card?
thx, nearly
Bro I just plugged my phone into my PC and my PC download the drivers needed.. recognized phone and bam. Go into computer and find your device. If you double click on it it should bring up your SD card.. From there I just drag and drop files.

Just like a USB stick. I connect to PC and it pops up. Maybe because I.have development option ticked but don't think it's that. Just download the latest version of kies for the drivers.

Really sucks...
Can't use the phone while transferring large files
What about connecting the phone to a PS3, does that work?
i cant remember the last time i connected a phone to a computer for file transfers.
get samba share from the market or use es file explorer to transfer files to network shares on the pc.
LOL WIRES.
MTP/Kies really suck. My main pc is running Linux so that's a no-go with MTP. I installed Kies on my work pc as it runs Win 7. All SGS 3 drivers are installed as well. For the first few days it was working but now the phone isn't recognised anymore. Either the phone does not show at all on the pc, or it shows but the internal and external SD cards are not showing.
Saw on Samsung's website that there's a Kies version for Mac available so I installed that on my wife's macbook pro. When plugging the phone in the "connecting" message keeps running but the phone never connects. I thought it was because I'm not using the original USB cable, but using that won't work either.
So looking forward to a custom rom that has USB mass storage included. Until then I'm using the WiFi File Transfer Pro and/or Samba Sharing apps.
You can also install Kies Air from the play store on your phone. You won't have to install anything on your PC.
Just make sure you are on the same network as your PC and run the app.
It will start a server and the URL will be displayed on your device.
Enter this URL in your browser on the PC and you are ready to go

Ok, will give it a go. Thanks!
You're better off using airdroid if it's just a couple of files

How can I copy file to /data directory?
I use Cyberduck on my Mac to connect to the SGS III by SSH, I have an app called SSHDroidPro on my phone. So easy to use. I can browse the entire filesystem of the phone wirelessly and file transfer is pretty fast and totally painless. MUCH better than Kies Air IMO.

Only with Windows 7 in my case, wouldn't work with XP
To explain it simply,
My extSDCard used to have 2 folders once upon a time. Then I connected the phone to windows. Then unplug it.
Now I have renamed one of the folders from 'Pictures' to 'Pics'. And I add one extra folder with 2 GB of Data in it. This is done using Root Explorer Android App.
Now I connect the phone to windows PC. Windows still shows the original 2 folders [with one of the folders still named Pictures] and does not show the new 3rd folder, but only shows a reduction in available memory space.
What is happening!!!? Running Latest CM10.1 Nightly with Siyah Kernel.
Not sure how this problem started - I reckon its got something to do with Root Explorer. Not sure though.
You should provide a screenshot of the folder in root explorer and again in windows

I have had that kinda problem, don't know, but I figured out how to fix it, at least temporarily and partially, I think that's something related to MTP.
Try reboot your phone several times should help, or run media scan .
Another way to avoid this is use ADB commands to push and pull files will not not encounter this problem as far as I can tell

Yeah if i restart loads of times and then connect it to the PC, then the filesystem on the PC shows the updated android filesystem. But if I disconnect and make any more changes, then the same problems again...

Is it possible to explore the SD card's contents on Android phone using Bluetooth connection ?
Years back when I had Sony K800, i switched on BT on phone and laptop, and I could see the K800 on the "My Computer" page.
then i could enter and explore and transfer files directly through the windows explorer.
Currently I have HTC Desire S, running Android 2.3.5 and Laptop CQ-45 (Compaq) running Vista.
But I am not able to explore the phone easily.
To transfer file I have to select each file, then start the BT file transfer wizard on laptop, which could either send or receive ONE file at a time.
if I try to send more than one file (pictures, few MBs), then only one gets sent and I have to restart the BT file wizard again to receive another file on the laptop.
I use this just if I need to transfer a few snaps i might have taken with the phone, for larger files (videos) i use the USB cable.
I installed the BT File Transfer app from the Market, but that also does not help.
Any other ways ?
My wifi is not always on, so i cannot use Airdroid or some such way.
Options are BT or USB.
thanks.
anyone ?
