Fingerprint reader and LastPass and/or other apps - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Can anyone with a device confirm if the fingerprint works with LastPass and/or banking (similar) type apps?
I've read one article that states:
It’s not all good news, though. Due to the way the in-display sensor works, it’s not currently recognised by apps that would previously be unlocked by a typical fingerprint sensor. Banking apps, for example, will just default to asking you for your pin-code.

I've relied on this feature enormously for years, especially with LastPass, and would be my only hesitation not investing in this device just yet.

Hi,
I can confirm that fingerprint read works with lastpass - it does on mine

Yes it works with LastPass and any app AFAIK however, for me, the fingerprint reader is very iffy in recognising me. It reminds me of a Samsung S6 I had for a month or two and got rid of because the fingerprint reader was so poor.
I'm somewhat 'mature' and older persons fingerprints tend to be harder to read but my Mate 8 and P20 Pro were all excellent - recognition at 98% most of the time.

My banking app only allows fingerprint reader for specific phones, so unfortunately I cannot use fingerprint on the firstdirect app.

[REQ] for developers - Finger Print lock Apps

Occasionally I leave my phone laying around or let other people play with it, but it's getting very tedious having to lock it all the time. Anyone up for creating a app that will let me lock certain portions/apps on the phone (ie. SMS, gallery, etc.) using the built in finger print scanner?
I will second this. I recall reading that Moto was going to release the APIs for the print scanner. That should make it considerably easier.
just a bump, I know all you great minds out there are capable of this and want this too =)
+1
+1 yes, yes, yes a needed app
Yes, yes, YES! I've been thinking about requesting something like this for a while now!
I emailed the developer of Widget Locker since he seems to be fiddling with the Finger Print Scanner on the Atrix to see if he's interested in making a separate app for this. I wouldn't mind paying something like $1 for it.
How can we get this thread more attention from developers on XDA?
Keep the thread bumped, add some other keywords such a biometric scanner, fingerprints, fingerprint scanner, etc. (I myself didn't find this when searching), post the same on other forums, that's all you can do really!

And here I am! (Sorry for taking some time to get back to this)
What I'm doing from WidgetLocker is piggy backing on the system security, so I don't interface with the fingerprint scanner directly. However I have looked into this as it could be interesting for WidgetLocker to be able to use in more ways, and potentially another separate app like discussed here.
I've seen the other thread about the password keeper and this one about an app-lock type thing. The issue with a password keeper is that the passwords should be stored encrypted, otherwise if someone stole your phone they'd just need to root if (if it's not already) and they'd be able to get all your password. But encrypting the passwords with a key that's stored somewhere is really just adding a few extra steps, they're not truly protected. Normally they'd be encrypted with your password, and only decryptable with you typing the password again. But I don't think this could be done for the fingerprint scanner due to what information is available (And how the fingerprint information is stored on disk). I could be wrong however.
As for the app-locker thing, there are also security issues here, but I think app-lockers are more used as a deterrent than as real security. To lock out your friend rather than a thief. But there's a fair amount of non-fingerprint related work to be done for this kind of app as well.
If I do end up doing anything with it I'll post back.
I said this in the development section when it was released lol. So....+1 and good idea!

my reasoning behind this type of app as you said isn't for REAL security from a thief, more of a deterrent from people around me....such as a nosy friend or girlfriend =)
"such as a nosy"
Well, of course cell phones have had a way to prevent that for what, 20+ years now? You leave it locked, except for "emergency and speed dial" or other restricted calling. No reason that someone has to borrow my cell phone (and deprive me of my phone!) while they're doing whatever with it.
I don't have any guilt about saying "Sure, you can make a call. But I need my phone with me."

Well, if you have a friend that would invade your privacy then they are not your friend. And if you have a girlfriend that doesn't trust you enough to respect your privacy then dump her. You can't have a relationship without trust.
There are already apps that let you lock particular applications. I hand my phone over to my 4-year-old all the time so she can play Fruit Ninja, so I keep my work email locked down. I guess it would be kind of cool if the app locking software took advantage of the Atrix's fingerprint scanner.

And why are we assuming that it's the girlfriend that's untrustworthy? PiTT (no offense, all due respect) is the one with dirty little secrets on his phone.

I don't understand what you are asking here. If you're going to be swiping your finger over the sensor to lock it, wouldn't it be just as simple to just press the button? If you have the sensor lock enabled, it will be locked with access only being granted to your finger swipe.
GEESH!
Clearly some people on this thread don't understand what's going on here. So let me break it down....
It's not about "it's not a real friend if they invade your privacy".
It's not about "why not just lock the phone itself".
Maybe you have a family member, girlfriend, wife, or CHILD you want to be allowed to use your phone. This requires unlocking the phone itself.
Buuuut, you don't want them snooping in your email or for the dense folks who don't get it, you don't want a CHILD deleting your messages accidentally, replying inadvertently to a co-worker via email etc.
Or let's be real, you don't want your GF or wife to see the chic you've been bangin's nude photo in your phone.
So you want to FINGERPRINT LOCK specific apps, like TEXT, EMAIL, SKYPE, TANGO, FRING, ETC! That way your "guest" can use your phone, but can't use any other apps without your finger!
GEESH!
I'd really like to see phones with Windows-like login profiles. So I can have my profile, ADMIN, and my wife can have hers GUEST.
Anyway...I second/triple/quadruple the idea of a fingerprint reader app lock. Right now I use AppProtector, and I'm looking into a new app called simply LOCK or (App) Lock.
"Clearly some people on this thread don't understand what's going on here. So let me break it down....
........you don't want your GF or wife to see the chic you've been bangin's nude photo in your phone."
*grin* The premise of your post made me laugh hard.
On a real note, I think this kind of application would be awesome. I too use appprotector, and I used to use the fingerprint scanner, but it just became bothersome to use everytime I locked my phone and had to unlock it. I don't have anything to hide on my phone, but I do lock my "SU" folder that contains all of my root tools. I have a 12 yo at home, and she could very easily mess something up without knowing it. I think the idea of locking certains apps with the fingerprint scanner is a fantastic idea, and I'd be willing to pay a few bucks for it for sure.
Actually, a whole utility for the fingerprint scanner on the Atrix that allowed you to do multiple things with it would be great.
Like was posted previously, it would be nice to have guest accounts (for wife and child etc), and with a fingerprint swipe, they wouldn't even have to login..swipe and go.

Mantano Reader: epub + pdf

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mantano.reader.android.trial
I've been following development of this reader over at mobileread for a while, and finally had occasion to grab the trial: very impressive. It is at least the equal of Aldiko on epubs, with better pdf support (for my purposes, anyway--I'm not annotating or anything) than ezPDF, and a very polished UI.
It's not cheap, but finally having an app that renders pdfs readable, and being able to retire 2-3 other reading apps in the bargain, makes it well worth it to me. The level of engagement from the devs also bodes well for the app's future.
I also tried the trial of Mantano and love this app! Finally found an app that doesn't hang when reading my pdf manuals, etc. As mentioned above, great interface and well worth the price to do what it does.
What does this $7.49 app have that Adobe Reader/Cool Reader doesn't?
Or it's just 2-in-1 convenience package?

Adobe reader doesn't remember your place in the document but has great viewing options. Coolreader doesn't support adobe drm so no library support. Aldiko has lots of nice little touches but sucked with pdfs... mantano addresses essentially all of these issues and others. So my opinion its a worthwhile "2-in-1" convenience.
I still prefer ezpdf. Mantano has poor image scaling.
FYI, the current update is apparently causing FCs on the NC,so you may want to freeze updates until they fix it.
Nice app.. imo, better than Moon Reader etc for epubs!
I've tried near every ebook reader app in the market but I've decided to bought Mantano because is by far the best and stable of all!!
I'm very happy about it and I feel that only a proper widget is missing so I've sent an email to them and they answered me in 10 mins!!
here the answer:

Hi Dimitri,
Thank you very much for your kind comment!
Currently you can add a shortcut to a book on your home page, but we'll add a widget someday. Before this, our next big improvements will be the support of teh OPDS catalog format, which will allow you to browse a lot of book catalogs available on the web, and the the synchronization between devices and annotations sharing. But the widget is also on our TODO-list.
Thank you again, and have pleasure with our app !
Best regards,
Jean-Marie

you might try reinstalling or clearing app data. i'm not getting any fcs with it. still waiting to be able to link to my library through this thing. hopefully that's what they mean by OPDS catalog support...

OT: BTW, in nanowrimo under 'skwalas' if you do jump in.
I just caught up on the MR @MR thread, and it looks like they already released a fix that solved people's problems.
After a few short days using the Mantano, I have to say it is better than the Adobe Reader, at least having the "remember last opened" feature.
ePub supporting was just ok, nothing fancy.
Thumb up anyway and thanks to those members who introduced the tool.
I can't open my downloaded BN ebooks with Mantano. It asks for name and password, but won't accept them. Ideas are welcomed. Thanks.

I believe your "username and password" for B&N's DRM is the name on the credit card associated with your account and the credit card number, respectively.

S-apps are totally dependent on the TouchWiz framework.
There is NO WAY you can port them except maybe convert to PDF.
I found this out after a few weeks using my Note 1 3 years ago. Ever since then, I have used Handy Note Pro, and recently I discovered DioNote, which is perfect for the X1.
Although I love my Note phones very much, I advise everybody NOT to use S-note or S-memo, but use these other great apps instead.
thx

The Adonit Jot Pro or Jot Mini ( I have this) works wonderfully.
I tested many drawing/sketching/noting apps on the X1, the best is DioNote with individual stroke rendering.
DioNote does not recognize your text, but each stroke is an element which can be edited.
Papyrus, Adobe, HandyNote, etc....all the stylus recognition sucked.
Thanks a lot. Dionote looks great. It has zoom panel to write on like other iOS apps (GoodNotes, Zoomnote).
However, I still can't find an active stylus (narrow tip stylus using battery, without bluetooth connection) working well on Android. I tried Biopen which said it supports both ios and android and found that it sucks on Android, barely useable.
I intend to use it for notetaking, mainly.

The screen on the X1 is capacitive, so you won't be able to use any active stylus.
Adonit Jot/ Jot Mini has a narrow tip and very good accuracy.
The good thing is that Dionote's zoom panel registers the Jot stylus incredibly well. I was very surprised because all the other note/sketch apps can't register a long stroke properly without break, or I had to draw/write slowly.

Soul Browser - A litte gem you've probably never heard of

I posted this on the Kiwi Browser thread more in mourning at the lack of support and updates Kiwi has received in the last year or so.
So I stumbled on Soul Browser and it's been excellent so far. Extremely fast and lite. Unfortunately it doesn't have extensions but it's got virtually every function and customization you can think of. Digging into it's background it seems to be from a developer out of the UK so should be safe. It's on the Play Store but not open source unfortunately.
Everything is good and all but i couldn't find the toggle to turn video overlays on fullscreen. i watch something on youtube in portrait mode, when i make it fullscreen, video pauses, sometimes starts from the beginning and i don't like that overlay with full of buttons. How do i turn that of and have smooth transition?

Read the last 5 or so pages of the Kiwi thread on here and most of your concerns are answered. I, and several others, had the same worries but it seems Adguard DNS takes care of most issues. Trackers etc are all Google stuff anyway according to ClassyShark.

I understand it's Chromium based but so is Samsung so all the same.
I'm having issues using it with NextDNS. It works but I get constant SSL errors on Soul which I don't get on Samsung or Kiwi, so there's something NextDNS doesn't like in there but I can't find it in the NextDNS logs. However it works fine with Adguard DNS and all trackers etc are blocked. I added Energized Ultimate to the adblock host list in Soul as an extra measure.
I imported my chrome bookmarks with ease using the html file. So no issues there.
A very good browser and can be greatly configured
(bars on top or bottom in custom size, long press settings, swipe settings, back/forward gestures, double finger gestures, no reload when back/forth, skip to page beginning, floating scrollbar, own blocklists, full auto dark mode, video downloader and much much more). I've never seen a better mobile browser, it's crazy.
But my problem with it is that it doesn't launch native apps from links:
Youtube is launched only if you google for youtube, but not from embedded videos; reddit is launched only if you use native reddit app and not third party one; ebay app doesn't launch and so on. Dealbreaker for me - I feel like on iOS.
Another thing is adblocker isn't consistent. If you jump through tabs and apps and then go back to prev opened website, sometimes there is suddenly an ad running, which was blocked before.
So overall it feels kinda buggy and you can say it's made by one person and on top of that - by a completly unknown entity (no mail, website) originate in Asia.
So I'm back on Samsung Browser beta which is still missing few nice to have things, but is fully baked.

I use Vanced and it launches directly. Check settings and enable the toggle to allow YouTube launch. I don't know about the ebay app but complaining about a 3rd party reddit app isn't the browsers fault.
I've switched off the built-in adblocker and use 1Hosts Pro and Energized Ultimate in the user field and never had that problem even with the built-in one active. Maybe because I also use a private dns adblocker on my devices.
I think the developer is from Korea as there are references to Korean legalities if you dig a little. I use this browser for daily casual surfing and it's fantastic but my main browser is also Samsung for secure and private stuff. Best of both worlds.
Well I use YouTube app and not vanced and it's not working. Toggle is set correctly and as I said some apps are starting, example "eBay Kleinanzeigen".
Ofcourse it's browsers fault if 3rd party reddit client is not starting IF it's registered in system as default reddit client.
Well written browsers always open apps properly: Samsung Browser, Firefox, Yandex and so on, because they respect those flags.
I don't want to need use vpn for adblocking.

I totally agree about how nice this browser is but I'm also VERY MUCH concerned about the risk of privacy violation. Anyone has additional info about this ?

Cool browser. But there's no option to import passwords
This was my daily browser for a while but now things are getting out of control. So much customisations as I like but not working flawlessly. Sad that no developer communication exist and bugs are not getting fixed.
Really like this browser but I have one really annoying issue : when watching a video in full screen landscape mode and would like to adjust something and tap the screen, the navigation bar do not disappear automatically...
Anybody faced this issue?

Atrial fibrillation and heart rate monitoring app

Hi all,
I have developed an application for a Wear OS, intended for a robust continuous atrial fibrillation (arrhythmia) and heart rate monitoring, which uses an optical sensor (green light) in the bottom of the watch. I'm currently limited to Fossil Gen 5 watch since my Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 won't give software access to its optical sensor.
Having said that, would anybody here like to test the app on their watches? It still needs to be improved and optimized, therefore, feedback would be appreciated. Also, it would run on other watches, however, in that case I would need to know an address of an optical sensor (Fossil Gen5 PPG sensor is 65572) so I could update the app.
I'd like to publish it in Google Play sometime later, have never done it before, it looks quite tricky, however, I filled most of the things there already.

Hi, I have tried your app, it's great that you are doing this.
I have tested it on Ticwatch Pro 3 GPS, it works correctly, shows heart rate and cardiogram for arrhythmias.
When I started the app for the first time it did not ask me to enable sensor permissions nor did it alert me that it did not have the permission enabled when I started monitoring. I activated them manually and it worked as expected.
About the PPG sensor address for TWP3 I don't know which one it is, I guess it is the same as the Fossil Gen5, because it works.

Thank you so much! Didn't expect such a quick feedback!
I'll try correcting the permission part. And it's great to know, that app is compatible with TWP3.
Just in case, keep in mind, that this app runs in the background and should be stopped manually.
Hi, I would like to try this on my Fossil 6. Do you install the .apk on the watch or phone? Sorry, I've never installed outside of PlayStore.

You can utilize this method to install this and any apk directly to WearOS.
A slightly updated version of the app, which now includes a request for permission to use BODY_SENSORS.

Hi all,
I have developed an application for a Wear OS, intended for a robust continuous atrial fibrillation (arrhythmia) and heart rate monitoring, which uses an optical sensor (green light) in the bottom of the watch.

Looks to me like Samsung has their sensor hidden behind this 'privileged' api, might be worth trying to request access?
Actually I was able to find a couple potential addresses for the Samsung sensor when I poked around a bit, were you unable to actually access the hardware even with the address?

Thanks for the tip. As I matter of fact I did try contacting them in the exact same way you showed, however, I the declined my request without explanation. Maybe it is because I didn't mention any affiliation with business or something like that. I'll try requesting once again.
I also tried reading all the accessible sensors in Watch 4, however, software access to the PPG sensors is restricted.
I guess the sensor you are referring to is this one:
Samsung PPGBatch Sensor /Type_String: com.samsung.sensor.ppg_batch /Type_number: 69668
Galaxy Watch 4 offers wide range of sensors and I have developed quite a lot of various algorithms, which could be implemented, e.g., continuous SpO2 monitoring (red and infrared optical sensors), confirmation of a suspected atrial fibrillation (detected by using green light optical sensor) using an ECG strip.
I tested app on TicWatch E3 and it does work on this watch. However, I noticed that the quality of the Photoplethysmogram signal is worse than what I get in Fossil Gen 5 watch. With Fossil Gen 5 watch, you don't even have to search for a good spot on the wrist, the quality is always good and it is not the case with TicWatch E3. The algorithm in the app won't throw false alarms because of that, the signal quality is constantly monitored, however, with that kind of quality it would be tricky to detect AF if it was present.
I apologize but I would like some help. I have a ticwatch E3. I apparently installed the app using Wear Installer 2. That app indicated that the installation was was successful. However, the app does not appear in my launcher. Is there something else I need to do?

You might want to consider utilizing Bugjaeger Mobile ADB as a really alternative and innovative solution to the problem of sideloading apps on Wear OS devices.
Thanks for the reply. Another question, as I said the Wear Installer 2 indicated that the app was installed. Would this app appear as an app in settings or in the launcher. If not, where is it on my watch?

Hi, I did some updates to the app, mainly in the representation of the heart rate change over time. There are some as to say, drawbacks because for now heart rate values are saved in a local variable, therefore, if app was closed and restarted, the previous heart rate log would not be saved. I also have some thoughts in adding additional screen for the parameters of atrial fibrillation if one was detected, however, still not sure what information (e.g., beginning and the end of the AF episode, duration of the AF episode, etc. ) regarding this would be relevant for an ordinary user. Maybe some of you might have ideas what info would be of utmost relevance for you.
I would love to use this app on my Samsung Watch 5. I hope you succeed in getting access to the sensors on the Samsung Watches. I think your app would be very popular!
Hi, I know it's a tech site but to anyone suffering from atrial fibrillation-one of the most common but least talked about causes is head and neck posture/atlas position, slumped forward posture- very common with the amount of time we spend on our computers- see Dr John Berg youtube channel -
A good chiropractor or acupuncture practitioner can help to correct these abnormal and harmful postures and could possibly save you from surgery or pacemaker..
Don't ignore other causes which are more serious though-especially in the lat 2 years- lots of people are getting abnormal blood clotting since having a certain injection or getting long covid.

Thanks! I haven't motivated myself to fill the request for getting the sensor access yet. It is quite complicated. Another thing that I noticed is that the raw green PPG signal from Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 is sampled at 25 Hz. Mine algorithm uses higher sampling frequency. According to the info provided by Samsung, only RED and Infrared PPGs in Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 are sampled at 100 Hz.
I am planning on improving the app by integrating it with Health Connect or with something similar. Currently the app stores, e.g., heart rate data in temporary variables, which are cleared as soon as the app is restarted. Another option was to write data in the main storage; however, data management seems tricky to me, I wouldn't want to deal with databases on my own.
Are you able to get raw RED and IR PPG sensor data (or any of the PPG sensor data)?
