Nougat battery drain: did the community ever find a fix? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Yesterday I finally saw proof that the battery drain of my phone isn't normal.
When I updated to Nougat I also started using often an app that I, at that point, believed to be the cause of the huge battery drain I started experiencing. I thought that it could also be the fault of my two-years-old battery.
A few days ago I finally bought a new battery, and yesterday I decided to test the battery drain on my G5 with it.
I actively used that app (which requires the GPS, btw) for three hours at the same time on the G5 and on a Samsung Galaxy A5.
Results: At the end, I consumed ~60% of the Samsung's battery and... almost three full batteries of the G5*.
I can't believe it.
Is there a fix? Even requiring root?
*I have the G5's battery charger, which acts as a power bank, and 3 batteries, one of which is inside the phone.

It's something lg related if you want nougat just install fulmics 5.5 you will have almost stock lg firmware with great battery life.

Thanks, if that really solves the problem I'll definitely try it.

No, I didn't activate it because it said it would keep running even when the GPS is off, so I thought it wouldn't be worth it. I'll try activating it...

Sorry to bump an old thread. I have crazy battery drain at 1% a min. Is the root cause of your battery drain identified?

[Q] Battery Drain Problem

Hello all,
I purchased a Galaxy S2 at the end of July, I live in the US, so it was from Amazon. The phone has been phenomenal, an amazing piece of technology.
I rooted the phone and flashed Lite'ning Rom 6.1 XXKH3. Still worked great, with no problems at all.
However, starting about a week ago, I am getting an extremely fast battery drain. Since then, I have spent hours looking at threads trying to figure out what was going on. I updated the rom to UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5, still no change.
I used Titanium Backup to freeze many widgets and app processes, still no change. I am currently using better battery stats to monitor wake locks, however after managing the wake locks, still no change.
I then bought a replacement battery thinking that the battery may have been bad, sadly, there was no change.
I have been trying to find a solution to this and had tried many other suggestions in other threads to no avail. As of now I have come to the conclusion that the device might have some type of malfunction that is causing this.
Am I going crazy or am I missing something obvious? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I have also re-calibrated the battery, still no positive changes.
Seeing the battery graph, you have your screen on a lot of time. Screen sucks battery a lot, so there might be one of the causes of battery draing.
Also you seem to have all day enabled 3G/WiFi, that also sucks some battery with it.
You can try JuiceDefender and see if it can help you extend a little your battery.
change kernel
Try flashing hardcore's "SpeedMod Kernel" and you will never complain about your battery life.....
After flashing this kernel my worse battery life was 1day and 12h with 3.5h screen on and wifi 85% ON.

Lol.... It's obvious he has some kind of battery problem, he is not using the phone much, and galaxy S 2 should have at least 5-6 hours screen on time and the phone lasted 3 hours.

Since I had all data on the phone backed up, I did a factory reset. I also flashed the UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5 as well as the suggested SpeedMod Kernel. When the battery was at 100%, I calibrated the battery. I tried to leave the phone idle as much as possible, I did use the internet for about 10 minutes to check e-mail, news, etc. So now the phone is essentially "empty" in terms of apps downloaded, I got rid of all widgets on all home screens.
There was still no positive change, I do really like the SpeedMod Kernel though, I do notice faster responsiveness from the phone.
I am beginning to think that the problem may be the hardware and not the software or battery.
I've got similar problems here. I am suspecting a hardware problem (I damn well hope it isn't coz i got mine from hong kong) because my phone never goes into deep sleep mode for more than 50% while the screen is off. I've tried at least half a dozen different kernels and roms and nothing helps, this is even in airplane mode i.e. with pretty much everything turned off. I've tested wakelocks and dont get anything more than a couple of seconds. I had my battery charged to full at 6:30am this morning, went to work and got home and it was dead after just under 12 hours with being idle 75% of the time. This is worrying as most people's battery lasts at least a whole day.
So I know it can't be the kernel, I know it cant be wakelocks, I know it cant be wifi or 3g data or anything of that nature so the only thing it comes down to now is hardware...
Funnily enough I've had exactly the same issue since about a week ago. Even when I take it off charge it's almost immediately down to around 80%. It's lasting around 4-5 hours, even when I'm not using the phone much, plus it gets really hot.
A couple of times Social Hub has appeared high up on the list of battery draining apps, although I don't use it. It doesn't always show up though. I switched to the CF-Root kernel and started using GO Launcher EX recently and wondered if that (or one of it's addon widgets) could be the cause.
It's really bugging me now!
SOLVED!
After days and days of trying to fix the issue of the phone not sleeping (and therefore draining excess battery whilst idling) I have finally fixed it!!!!!
First i noticed that along with the sleep problems, I was getting the problems with car mode popping up randomly, the phone going into mtp connection mode, and thinking its charging when it was unplugged. After looking into these issues (and i thought it was a longshot) I decided to do what people were saying and CLEAN THE MICRO USB PORT.
Now you're probably thinking I am a crazy man, but now im just crazy happy that I don't have to send my phone back to Hong Kong!
Instructions:
1. Get a clean, dry, soft-bristled toothbrush.
2. Take any case you have off the phone.
3. Gently insert the bristles into the port and "flick" it out softly.
4. Repeat this about 10-15 times
No matter what ROM, what kernel, what modem i tried flashing, my phone was always sitting on no more than 50% deep sleep mode when idle and had no wakelocks or "rogue apps".
I am now getting 90% - 98% DEEP SLEEP MODE!
I obviously can't guarantee that it will work for everyone, heck how it solved the issue is a mystery to me, one which probably an electronically-minded/computer systems person could answer. What I can say though is I searched high and low online for about a week. I tried different kernels, I tried different ROMs, I tried "re-calibrating" the battery, I used BBS to check for partial wakelocks. If you too have tried all this and have had no success please PLEASE try this and see if you have success!!
Thanks for reading!
....
Or if you didnt...
TL;DR: If you're having battery drain problems clean the micro USB port with a soft toothbrush.
The phone never sleeps when charging, the CPU idles at 200 MHz, whatever was in your USB port was probably making contact with the pins that tells the phone it is connected to a charger when it actually is not, so it was idling at 200 MHz and was not receiving power, that's the only explanation I could fathom
Do two things:
Install CPU spy and show us what the deep sleep percentages are,
and try disabling wifi. Also, what is the router?
I have a battery drain issue; but its kind of screwey as i will reboot my phone and lose about 20% of the phones charge. If i turn it off and leave it off for an hour the charge comes back. Its random as well; only happens once a week. I have had this problem on different roms. You might have a similar problem to me. Possible the hardware that detects battery state is knackered.

New firmware: actually worsens battery performance

In my case, after updating to new firmware and software my battery full capacity indicator has become sort of crazy (for the worst).
Before updating I got a solid 1390 mAh always. Now It depends on the day, but It never surpases the 1270 mAh. Barrier.
Today I´m getting a poor 1170 mAh.
Strange thing.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?

From my review, my battery seems to be getting better now, first week after the update, battery was dreadful, it seems to be a whole lot better now. Give it a week, if it continues, email Nokia support, since you hopefully have your warranty, they'll check and replace it if it's faulty, I'm suffering from some horrible notification bug, that's worse, getting your notification when you enter message/whatsapp...-_-
Have same problem. The last update have reduced full charge capacity from 1420 mA to 1303 mA and it's still decreasing every charge. Hope is's soft bug, otherwise nokia should exchange killed batteries phones.
Nokia says not to trust their diagnostics tool when it comes to degrading capacity. The battery should be fine anyway unless it reports less than 1000mAh.
Nokia's biggest mistake was making the Diagnostics available to every user. Now everybody thinks Nokia stole their precious mAh...
Note: It doesn't even matter the update gave us some hours in autonomy.
Yep. Without it most users would actually enjoy their phones.
So the Diagnostics tool gives a bad reading?
Today, when I plugged the charger off, the charge percent inmediately went down from 100% to 98%. Maybe there´s some kind of software bug thay doesn´t give the real battery performance.
P.S.: I actually enjoy my phone. Love it.

This happened to me also this morning. Took my phone off charge, unlocked it and then was at 98% but going to keep an eye on it throughout the day. I got roughly 15 hours use yesterday and 5 hours of that was when i was at work.
I am getting terrible battery life after the update. 100 % at last mid night. By the morning it is at 85%. It seems the battery life got worsen by a 40 % decrease before the update.
Should I restore my Lumia 800?
I get weird battery issue on my latest 800. About every second charge the battery drains very fast doing nothing. The next charge it is fine. Next after that it can drain. And so it goes. Something fishy with software indeed. It was preloaded with 11501 from factory so I have not updated myself.
Nokia need to take a detailed look at this. As it is now they fully think the issue is fixed when in face it is not. As the topic implies it actually made things worse compared to old firmware. Those 15% charge that were lost in old firmware it lasted longer anyway because it had no drain.

I have made a factory reset just for the heck of it. Also I have recently started rebooting my phone with the charger plugged after every charge and then unplug when it is booted again. So far no drain after doing so but too early to make any conclusions.
I reseted the phone on a charge cycle with drain and after the reset the drain stopped. So something weird is going on. Hadn't really installed apps etc... syncing/location etc off...

Unfortunately I do not even have the good days result. After I updated my Lumia to .11500 my battery drains really quick with doing nothing. Before going to sleep I had about 60%, waking up it was empty, in 6 hours! Before I could last about 1.5 days with my phone. Hardly 10 hours with normal use. 3G on but wifi and bt off.
Does anyone know how to change this or to change it back to the earlier version of software?
I love this phone and its OS, but the battery consumption is just wrong!
Thanks.

Same issue with battery drain. Not that frequent though. Two times in two weeks. It´s random I think. Thing is that I´ve noticed that it has occurred when the phone shows maximum than my average battery capacity.
Normally phone shows 1170 mAh when fully charged. Strangely enough I get a very decent battery life. More than 24 hours with normal to heavy use.
But today it showed 1370 mAh fully charged and it´s not passed 12 hour barrier.

Since I made that factory reset the drain has not come back so far. Now I get good battery life and it's usually at 70% when I go to sleep at nights with moderate use throughout the day.
Is this what everyone is doing for best battery or is it just me?
Used to get heavy drain when I get the mobile:
I had to do below:
1) Location services off - i use very low though.
2) Removing people tile
3) Display brightness - LOW
4) Settings->Applications->Games->Connect to Xbox LIVE-> OFF
(with ON, used to drain battery alot atleast for me)
5) Settings->Background tasks->Weather->Off
(not sure of this, but I don't use it so I switched off)
6) Removing XBox Live Tile (In fact all live tiles like App Highlights etc...)
7) Date+time -> Set automatically -> OFFFF (I don't think we need it unless we go to other country)
8) Phone Update -> Turn off notifications
By the way,
I use push email outlook on always

Just restore your backup in Zune. Connect the phone, go to the phone tab. Settings -> updates -> restore. Good luck!

What to do. Now a days all smart phones come with great features and poor battery life.
By the way, anybody knows how to turn off fast dormancy in our lumia 800? I used to get much better battery life by turning off fast dormancy in android phones ( obviously my network is not supporting the feature though)

So you're limiting the phones key features for a battery problem? Why not contact Nokia? I must be honest, if Nokia were to tell me to switch off so many features of my phone, I would tell them to kindly p*** off, as I've had many phones before it that didn't pose a problem like this, if it's a fault, they should act to it, not make you rectify their mistakes. At the end of the day, if you broke your phone accidently, would they fix it for you? So why should you?

"Android System" massive battery drain

finally found a thread on this issue after posting
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1748301
sorry mods, pls delete
Me too ... it's driving me nuts.
I am experiencing this. My battery life is horrendous. Even when I barely touch the phone the battery drains extremely quickly. I have already rooted the phone with a few different roms with the battery setting "fix" to no avail. I'm on at&t. I have disabled wifi and gps. I have tried to use both the stock app killers and 3rd party ones recommended by these forums. My battery monitoring apps (both stock and 3rd party) consistently attribute the battery loss (always more than 90% of battery use) to an android system app. The android system app or file changes from day to day seemingly randomly. Files have included: UltaCfg, com.samsung.app.playreadyui and security storage.
Any help will be extremely* appreciated. I love the phone but it is nearly useless in this state.

I have been experiencing some serious battery drain issues. Looking at my battery stats, "Android System" is responsible for over half of the drainage. These are the only apps that run constantly besides those which the phone requires to operate:
- SetCPU
- HDWidges
- The Weather Channel
- LBE Privacy Guard
- avast! Mobile Security
other phone info is in sig. Any insight/advice??

I am draining my battery as quickly as I can (streaming Netflix through 4G LTE with max screen brightness, max overlclock w/ performance gov) and then i'm going to power off and do a full recharge. this seemed to have fixed similar issues in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756776
let you know the results.
edit: suppose i should say that i was not experiencing this issue until i updated KT747 this morning.
this is what i did:
1) drain the battery completely. let the phone die.
2) charge to 100%. do not power the phone on until it is completely charged to 100%.
3) when i powered the phone on I was at 99%. i plugged it in and it went to 100% in about 2 minutes.
this seems to have completely solved my problem. the android system has gone from using 57% of the battery to 6%. it seems like the kernel i was using vastly overestimates the percentage of the battery to allocate to the android system until it "learns" the capacity of the battery

I am also a Telus user. I had big time battery drain issues even with trying everything: enabling power savings mode, running Juice Defender, using wifi more, using darker wallpaper, keeping a closer eye on syncing operations, screen brightness and some other stuff.
After about 10 days I went back to the vendor (Futureshop) and convinced them to give me an exchange on the battery. They have a 14 day return/exchange policy for cell phones if you are not completely satisfied. I took some screenshots to argue my case. Thankfully the rep said ok and further explained how much power an AMOLED screen uses. I really didn't want to convince him that I am quite informed on battery drain issus and took the new battery and ran!
Conclusion is the new battery is so much better it's like night and day. I have the capacity now that others have been raving about.
If you can exchange the battery, do it. Then get the new battery and charge it up fully first thing.

why is the battery life so poor?

I got an LG G5 2 weeks ago and the battery has been outrageously bad. I bought it used and the owned has owned it for 2 to 3 months. There is very little standby drain and the phone is cold to the touch within minutes. Overnight drain is around 10 to 12 percent with always on display which is normal considering the 1 percent per hour loss plus the normal overnight drain. However when I turn the screen on the screen on time is very poor only about 2.5 hrs to 3 hours. The screen brightness is set 20 to 40 percent no auto brightness. There appears to be nothing draining the battery with the screen being the biggest battery draining. I have location nfc Bluetooth and LTE turned off. Along with touch sounds and touch vibration but toggling these settings makes no difference. Its impossible to find out more because I have no root. If this battery continues to be this poor I'm going to be selling it because I cannot stand having to charge twice a day even with quickcharge 3.0 old xiaomi redmi note 3 lasted 2 to 3 times longer on the battery. Any ideas what could be eating my battery?
Hi
I get 4 to 5 hours screen on time and I use my brightness at 75% to 100%, never as low as 20-40% it's too dark.
What apps do you use when you do have the screen on? Maps and games will drop you to 2-3 hours screen on time like all phones, but normal apps (excluding snapchat) will give you 4-5 SOT.
I would turn off always on display, you won't miss it.
Eeeeh , your Android system and android Os are high , screen should consumpt most of the battery about 30-40% mine does 34% with 35% brightness and Phone idle 22% my android system at 9% android Os 6% , if you dont game you get nearly 1 day life from your battery but if you do you need 2-3 timers charging per day , also if you use Data it just sucks the battery like vacum. So there is a drain in your system but its true lg g5 consumps a lot in order to give you performance in priority and not power saving. Dont forget G5s are the only high range phone that you can swip your battery with no deal , they are giving you that feature , Use it!!! You can grab up to 3600mah (2800 stock) extended capacity battery with a wall charger from ebay really cheap and never again have a battery problem. Also this batterys are lithium ones , i saw in your pic 10% i suggest not to go below 20% you are killing really fast lithium batterys if you decharge them!!!

Always on display barely drains any battery. I use apps such as facebook, text messaging, messenger, instagram, chrome, etc. I rarely play games because the second I open a game the battery life is only about 1.5 hours sot.
Well Facebook and messenger should be a couple of alarm bells when talking about battery life surely? Also, you bought it second hand, you have no idea how the previous owner treated the battery in the time they had it no matter how short a period it was.

I just bought my brand new G5 H860 TWN and updated it, which cause the whole device to malfunction.
please correct me if I'm mistaken. An update is meant to improve the functionality of a device not to destroy it.
Apart from this problem the interesting thing is that non of the LG customer cares know whats causing the problem,

Thanks for your advise my friend, factory resetting the device was the first thing i did, but i did not solve the issue.
i have tried the following:
-Flash other ROMs from different countries for H860
-booted the device into safe mode and tried to enable the WiFi and etc.
my WiFi MAC is set to 02:00:00:00:00:00 and it means that WiFi has not been detected by android. Also the Bluetooth address is defined as "unavailable".
and the worst of all is its battery drain issue which kill my battery within 5 hours in standby mode, while i can not notice any abnormal battery consumption in "BATTERY USE DETAILS" section in Battery usage setting. this probably means that some other consumer(perhaps the WiFi) uses the battery without being listed.

and the worst of all is its battery drain issue which kill my battery within 5 hours in standby mode, while i can not notice any abnormal battery consumption in "BATTERY USE DETAILS" section in Battery usage setting. this probably means that some other consumer(perhaps the WiFi) uses the battery without being listed.

H860? H860 haven't got root nor custom ROM yet. Bootloader of H860's still locked.
I've got a brand new LG G5 which I have been using since Thursday and I honestly can say it sucks big time compared to my 2 year old Z3 which can easily get me 4 hrs SoD on mixed usage. Using the exact same set up of apps, location and wifi/mobile use, I am struggling to see more than 2.5hrs SoD with the G5. Honestly, it just drains battery like no tomorrow and this is fresh battery... I dread to think what it will be like in 2 years. Sony made a lot of mistakes but the Z3 really excelled...

[S9+ exynos] >4%/hr Standby drain exclusively on Samsung Galaxy phones

Hi all,
I am one of the many people complaining for the very poor battery life of the Exynos S9+, but my problem is more extended.
In the previous days I read all the topics related to battery drain in the S9+ and S9 sections of the forum, without finding any solution
My problem is very strange: every Samsung Galaxy I owned (S6, S7edge, S8 and now S9+) has a standby drain around 4%/hr. This is very bad, since more or less 60%-70% of my battery during a standard working day is drained without using the device. In 24hrs I can reach 0% battery with a few minutes of SOT.
I tried to disable almost everything (AOD, sync, location, google location history, nearby wifi bt search etc), hard resetted the device and started from scratch, but the standby drain is always the same.
The very strange thing is that if I configure with all the same apps and accounts a device which is not a Samsung galaxy I have maximum 0,5%hr standby drain. I tested it recently with Lg G6 and Xiaomi MiA1 and the drain is not present. Again, same apps and same setup of the phone.
There should be something specific in the configuration of my Galaxy devices that causes drain, but in 3 years I couldn't find it.
Is there anyone who can help me? What am I missing?
Did you disable the 4G usage while on wifi in the developer settings?

No, I will try today thank you. But for the most part of my day I am not under wifi, I am under 4g (full bars), so it will have effect only on the few hours I pass at home with the wifi connection

Ah ok, then this will maybe not help too much. Whats the battery usage percentage of your android system? Please add a screenshot of your statistics at the end of a battery cycle.
This is one of the best battery cycles of the last days:
12h 50min since unplugged
16% remaining battery
2:54 SOT
3,2%/hr standby drain
More than half of the SOT done under wifi during the evening, from 8:30am to 18:00 under 4g.
This is a terrible battery life, I cannot get to the end of a working day.. And this was one of the best days. Sometimes the standby drain is more than 4%/hr

Nothing obvious jumps out but that does look worse than normal, are you travelling around/ in bright sunlight a lot?
Few things to try -
1) Download betterbatterystats and enable through adb commands
2) what was the screen brightness like on GSAM?
3) factory reset did work for me
Something is wrong.
Do you have any apps running in the background all the time ?
Or dozens of accounts syncing?
Does your phone actually go into sleep or dozens mode ?
Do you have running bixby or google Assistent on ?
Do you use Iris scanner ?
Thanks for the support. I also have yesterday's screenshots of betterbatterystats, here attached.
It seems to sleep a good percentage of time.
No, I'm not traveling, I stayed the whole day in the office.
Accounts : Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter.
Yes, intelligent face scan is on
Same here i just bought the phone a few days ago. Disabled bloat and still i cant even get close to 24hours max apx 14 if i dont touch it. My Old S8Plus was so much better. Going to try a factory reset in the next few days. I must admit i did restore from a previous backup.

Facebook is a known battery hog, please try to use the official lite app from facebook. Intelligent scan always activates the iris scanner as soon as you turn on your device. Do you use your lockscreen alot while not unlocking your phone? During this time the iris scanner is wasting energy cause it constantly scans for your eyes. I have setup my device to start scanning only when i swipe up on the lockscreen.
Whats with that 1h20min of Google Play services. Did you use the playstore or some other stuff from Google for that long amount of time actively?

I will try today to remove Facebook and install Lite (the strange thing is that with my LG G6 and MiA1 with the official Facebook app I have zero problems).
Iris scanner and lockscreen are almost never engaged. The phone is sitting on the desk, and I wake it up through fingerprint most of the times.
Now here in Italy it's 11AM, the phone is unplugged since 7:30Am and the standby drain is already 4,5%/h

Ok, thanks for the info. Hm but still, is your usage of Google Play Services always this high? Mine isnt even listed with hours and minutes, only with 3% usage in 30h! And im still on 46% battery.

I have an S9+ Exynos since launch, and even when at first it came with some drain issues, those and many more were addressed with latest update (BRE).
From what I can see, you are using 2 SIM's and your signal is not that good, which contributes to the battery drain.
Other question: how are you doing the backup/restore of your things?, because the S9+ is known for being picky with these, and if you don't do it properly, it will impact battery and application behavior.

Is better if you can try a clean installation and remove/disable the things you don't use. I'm able to get +5hrs SOT in a period of 40-48hrs constantly; I recharge my phone every 2 days and the battery drain overnight is around 3%. I'm all stock, no root or ADB tweaks, and the only thing I don't use is AOD because is not useful for me.
Also I know many other people with similar results as mine, so is a matter of configuration or your phone is defective and you would need to change it.
Good luck!

Hi,
My main problem is that I have the same exact problem with the S8 and S7edge, but not with the LG G6... so it's something related to my configuration on samsung phones (same account, same apps, same everything). That's the reason why I'm sure that the phone is not defective.
I have the same problem if I use it in Single sim, and 90% of the day I am under full bars of 4G+ coverage.
The configuration started from scratch (did not start from previous backups). I had just setted up my google account and then reinstalled everything from play store. The only backup I recovered is Whatsapp (through the internal backup function of the app on google drive)
Thanks to everyone for the support!
Facebook Lite: no results. Still at 3,5% standby drain per hour.
Please help :crying:

Try to disable background activity for "Android System".
For some people, this helped a lot.

Has no implications, it seems that for no reason that option drains a lot of battery for some, so maybe you want to give a try.
Everything works perfectly with it disabled, I run this options since I got my S9+ and is day and night difference.
