General observations and EMUI Desktop question - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi,
Got my 20 Pro on Friday and so far I'm relatively pleased with it. There seem to be a few teething issues.
In-screen fingerprint scanner
- Doesn't work 100% of the time for me. More like 70% of the time.
- I find it less usefull than one on the rear. With a scanner on the rear you can use it to pull down the notifications whatever screen you might be in. ie I can be in the Browser and still pull the nitifications down with a swipe. I haven't found a way of doing that on the 20 Pro without coming out of the active app?
Some apps are not working?
- Just crashes straight away?
Gesture navigation
- coming from a Xiaomi it is clear where Huawei took their inspiration from. But it simply does not work as smoothly. Flicking up form the bottom should just take you home with a flicker of the previous apps coming up. Just a little thing but hey!
EMUI Desktop question
I also have a Mat 10 Pro on which I use the Desktop application extensively and it works very well. However with the 20 Pro the displayed resolution is much lower, as if it reduced from wqhd to hd? Is there a way around this? It is actually making it pretty useless.

Apps:
Are you talking about native apps? As they should have been thorough benchmarked against Pie 9.0 before being released on a phone. If its apps from Nougat or Oreo, then there's a possibility those apps require updates for suitability on the new OS.
Fingerprint:
Are you using the same pressure for each tap? Have you tried unregistered and re-registering your finger print again (touch different areas of your finger around the sensor area)?
EMUI Desktop:
Can you explain what is wrong with the resolution of FHD using desktop EMUI? Lower res (at least not under 720p HD) is good to prolong battery life...what sort of work are you doing (do you really need 2K resolutions? How did you find battery life with full res quality on M10P?

Hi, thanks for your answer.
You might well be right about the apps, some of them probably need updating to Pie. However, I'm having an issue connecting Android Wear notifications. There is a Wear Alert saying saying it needs aces to Notifications, which it has. When I click on the the link Wear just closes down. All the settings are correct and the watch (Huawei W1) is paired. So that's...annoying
I have deleted the fingerprints and re-registered them, it might be about 80% successful now. But it is more the loss of functionality which is a shame. A physical fingerprint sensor can be used to swipe down notifications much more easily. But hey ho.
The desktop just looks really zoomed in on the m20p compared to the m10p. Is there a way of zooming out? Unusable otherwise.
I think I might sell the m20p and get the Mi Mix 3, it has a physical fingerprint sensor, gestures work seamlessly for all launchers including Nova (really don't like the Chinese UI's - EMUI, MIUI etc...) and it has no notch.

Wait for build 122 if you aren't already on it. Widely discussed in multiple threads here...might fix one or more of your problems RE: wear/apps and the consistency of fingerprint. Cannot help you with Desktop function just yet.

I can't get desktop mode to work. Is it a specific cable I need? I use a USB-C to HDMI that works fine with my Note 9, but nothing at all happens.
Also, is there a way to use Wireless Projection to a Chromecast? Or any other tips on how this works...

I have taken some screenshots (attached) to illustrate the issue I am having with the m20p (first) as opposed to the m10p (second).

I think it's a DPI not a resolution difference. Yes, I also find the lower DPI (larger fonts and elements) annoying. EMUI Desktop needs to have customization options.

Yes, you are right DPI, not res. It seems like a retrograde stepp to me.

The front fingerprint reader works 99% of the time for me. I find you simply have to press harder on it than a standard finger print reader. The pulling down the notification shade with the scanner is probably one of the least used features on any phone to be honest "shrug". Back readers are just so clumsy. Using my note now is like going back to the 80's in back to the future haha.
Flicking up with gestures on standard launcher works perfectly. It is the non standard launchers that will require updating.
As for the desktop mode, it's most likely down to your TV or a required update on the Mate. Also make sure you have the resolution on the phone set manually to the resolution you want.

Hmm, each to their own views on useful functionality. Personally, I find the ability to pull notifications down whilst using the phone, holding it with one hand and not having to close any apps useful. More so with the m20p since there is already an unlocking mechanism on the front.
No doubt it is non standard launchers causing the issue with gestures, but I can only say that they work perfectly on Xiaomi devices and Nova.
The irritation with the desktop is that the m10p displays fine on the same monitor. Some kind of dpi issue.

Samsung DEX is way better than either the m20p or m10p in terms of desktop environment on a smartphone. Checkout the various options for the screen resolution for the desktop on Samsung DEX.

has anyone managed to fix the resolution issue with desktop mode yet?
This is one of the main reasons I bought the mate 20 x and if the resolution isn't going to be fixed then I might be going to samsung unfortunately

[Q] Minimum scroll/pan step size

Hi, curious question.
I'm wondering why the Nexus7 doesn't allow you to slow scroll/pan down at single pixel steps. Always seems to be in 2-3 pixel jumps. I got a bad habit of scrolling web pages while reading from iOS but on my N7 I get these kinda anoying start/stop jerks.
Is this related to the virtual pixel resolution being lower than the actual screen resolution? And would changing it allow one to match the virtual pixels to the screen pixels and get smoother slow speed panning?
Anyone know if some custom ROMs optimize for this?

I have been struggling with this issue for days. Looked into kernel code hoping to find anything related to scrolling or touchscreen but nowhere to find such a thing. It has nothing to do with virtual pixel resolution. If you swipe your finger at a degree of between 45-90 (accapted as scroll up by the system), Y coordinates change by 3 pixels where as X coordinates can change by 1.. Therefore its not a limitation, it is kind of scroll sensitivity which is 3px.. I've seen other devices can scroll by 1 pixel.
I believe google has set this value to 3 because of rendering issues, since its gonna render the screen 3 times more if it is set to 1. Maybe it is the optimum sensitivity. Lower than 3 pixels may disrupt buttery smoothness but its just a guess..
I hope one dev can lead us the right piece of code where it is set to 3 and we can change it ourselves to test the best..
You guys can try the problem yourself actually by installing the "Multi-touch accuracy check" app from market, which shows the exact pixel of the touch..
the xy coordinates readout from the developer "show touches" setting shows the 3pixel increments too.
when panning something just a bit faster than dead slow then suddenly gets rid of the jumps and goes smoother as well.
could it be a battery saving thing that they just get rid of taxing the cpu/gpu when people like me do these constant slow scroll pans on webpages and books etc.?

2 more thoughts:
a) this relatively coarse sensitivity can lead sometimes (not often) lead to a +/-3 pixel uncertanty in a UI element and cause it to jittter - sometimes happens when finger pressure changes.
b) I had for a while thought that it may be linked to the size of the touch sensors on the display. Being a lower cost device I figured that the HW resolution may be lower than pixel count. But I'm pretty sure that you must be always hitting multiple sensors and the system should just interpolate to a finer resolution.

When scrolled a little bit faster, it still increases by 3px , not 1.. I also assume that it is about battery saving but if I can find a way to decrease the step size, I'd love to try it by myself..
Also It can be related to the sensors , as you mentioned, but not likely.. It can catch 1px changes when swiped horizontally..
Any news on this?
As far as I can see, this is only related to touch screen; if you use a usb mouse, you can actually see the scroll by one pixel at time, and there is no graphical issues. With mouse all seems smoother...
At this point, I think It's an hardware issue of the touch screen, as the system can easly support 1px scrolling

My two cents...I tried this approach and when you move your finger with about 5 degree you can get 1 pixel change by Y and 3 pixels change by X. And if you move your finder with about 85 degree you get 1 pixel by X and 3 pixels by Y. It seems that hardware can handle the 1 pixel change by X or Y. It looks like the touch events are throttled by the system based on the distance between points.
There is no decent and satisfying answer to this yet .. I'm still waiting for a solution..

Display can't do 60FPS?

I was really happy with my LG G5, until after a week or so, I noticed that the screen actually seems to have problems with "fast" change of movement. And I am really annoyed at this point by it, because I compared it with other devices of mine, and it's not that bad on these older devices. For example my old phone, a Samsung Galaxy S3, doesn't have this issue at all.
You can easily notice it in the Android settings (use list view). When you now slowly move up/down with your finger, you see that all fonts have a "ghost-effect" (get blurry) of not properly refreshing in time. There is a bit of border / re-draw affect around each word on the screen.
You will notice it also for example on the app store scrolling down / up, or in an app drawer (if you have a launcher with app drawer) and scroll through the app list.
On my phone i have no ghosting or problems with fast change of movement. There is a website called "testufo" where you can test your display for ghosting and FPS.

Question Videos are washed out in many apps such as Google Photos/Chrome

Hello all,
This has been an issue since I got the pixel 6 at launch. When playing videos, the shadows appear washed out. It appears to be some sort of gamma shift or HDR tone mapping issue. This happens when in google photos, chrome browser, imgur, even other apps. (youtube is fine).
I've confirmed in person this happens to other pixels one of which was pixel 6 pro.
The issue is recorded here:
I tried changing the color setup under display options in system settings, turning off H265 in camera settings, booting into safe mode, forcing 60hz refresh rate, but it still washes out the videos.
This does not happen with videos shot by other phones, for example my wife's iPhone shot video then sent it over to me and the gamma shift does not happen...
Strange thing is, in Chrome while playing the video, as soon as I swipe up from the bottom to open the recent apps, the video jumps back to normal as seen here:
https://imgur.com/a/Va3l5fQ
I reported this to google, and their chat support to me to fully nuke my phone to factory....
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening, and could other Pixel 6 users verify it's happening on their devices as well ?
Thank you

I seldom shoot video with phones and usually don't like to reference reviews. But from what you described Dxomark's summary about video performance is looking to be spot-on.
Google Pixel 6 Camera review: An outstanding performer in its segment - DXOMARK
The Google Pixel 6 camera displayed an outstanding performanc and is currently the best option for photographers who prefer smaller devices.
www.dxomark.com
My experience with dark objects in still photos has been somewhat similar. Recently I couldn't get enough detail photographing black camera bodies I'm selling online. Even with direct light from a daylight LED lamp I ended up using night mode. Every speck of dust showed up which wasn't ideal either.
Over all, though, I like the Pixel 6 camera.

Did you ever find an answer to this? I'm having the same issue... though it's not for every video, just in certain programs/websites.
Cheers.
I've been able to remedy this in chrome by turning off HW Overlays in Developer Options.
It's still an issue in Google Photos.

Weird, after I turn it on, I can go to any other screen on the phone, if I come back the toggle it´s off again, maybe it´s a bug on my end, here´s the example

Question Is there a working DC dimming solution for POCO M4 Pro 4G?

Activity Launcher, despite the name, is not an Android launcher. It is a tool that allows you to launch and create shortcuts for hidden apps/services. It's popular because it allows modifying the "Anti-Flicker Mode" setting available in some ROMs but hidden from the Settings App.
Nova Launcher, as an Android launcher, cannot enable DC dimming. I don't think DC dimming is possible with this phone at the moment.

Thank you very much for the clarification.
It's a shame that there are no solutions to the screen flickering problem for this lovely phone. Interestingly, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11s uses the same display, but there the flicker is much less and appears below 54% brightness only, while here it is even at 100% brightness, which is terrible for the eyes...
I haven't actually observed a flickering problem. I'm on MIUI 13.0.9 (Android 11) and can't even observe it at low brightnesses. I keep my display refresh rate at 60Hz to improve battery life, I don't know if that makes a difference? It's not a hardware issue with your device is it?
Use a camera on another phone, set it to pro mode, and choose a shutter speed of about 1/500s. Now point the camera at your phone's display and start dimming it. You will see black bars running all over the display. They are not visible to the naked eye, but at the same time your brain indexes them and if you stare for a long time they will give you a headache and damage your eyes...
This is called PWM and is characteristic of AMOLED screens, which is why they put so much strain on the eyes, unlike IPS screens, where the image does not flicker at all, regardless of the brightness of the screen.
btw my phone updated to android 12, is it possible to downgrade it back to android 11 or is there no such function in the menu?
You could probably flash the old firmware through adb, you could open a new thread and see if anyone has done it?

Question Magnifier Widget Not Full Screen - can anyone else reproduce this? (FIXED with June 2023 update)

I just came across this "bug" as described here:

Thanks, and to clarify, can you confirm it's more like half the screen only? Although it's centered in middle of screen.
This surely is a significant bug, and it's surprising no one has reported it aside from that above post.

Yes, it gets to almost fullscreen with FHD+, but it only gets proper fullscreen with HD+ resolution. Quite bizarre.
Unfortunately not fixed with the April update. Quite bizarre how few reports of this there are (I've only seen one actually). There are even some YouTube videos showing this Magnifier widget and the issue is there, but the reviewer doesn't even mention the issue.
Update regarding this - finally with the June update, this is fixed. Amazing how essentially zero reports on this from English sites/forums etc.
