Can you send me a link

Is there any kind of on-screen notification to show that it is showing HDR content? I have tried some HDR videos on Youtube (I don't have Netflix) and the videos look the same to me - on my TV the difference is obvious when it is playing HDR stuff.
I have just swapped my LG screen for a BOE screen and the colours look a lot less vibrant in normal use, so wanted to test out some HDR footage to see if it made any difference - otherwise I'll be sending it back in the hope of getting an LG screen without issues!

With this version it at least shows me that HDR is available on certain content. But I don't see much of a difference playing it.

When playing an HDR video from YouTube your screen should go to full brightness, that's normally an indication it has switched to HDR mode.

I get the HDR logo on content even from the official app, but I don't think it plays in HDR mode.

Mine doesn't go to full brightness. Just tried streaming Black Panther in 4k HDR and it looks awful - very dark and colours are not popping out half as much as they did on my previous HTC U11 which didn't have an OLED screen. Think I'll be returning this one next week in the hope of getting a (fixed) LG screen!

It definetely changes the screen settings while playing HDR content. The red of the netflix search bar etc. changes noticably but I can not really see any difference in the content.
But I heard opinions, that HDR on a Smartphone is not really noticeable and made little sence.

Out of interest, is yours a BOE or LG screen?
I also noticed the reds go very garish on the menu of my streaming software, but the actual film stayed normal colour.

just check.... our mates have widevine lv1 so it should be playing 4k and hdr.... maybe huawei somehow just disabled to show hdr content?!

Seeing if you are playing a video in HDR is quite easy actually. Just press a volume button and you should notice the blue tones are... well... more blue. Another thing to do is trying to adjust the brightness of your screen.
Oh and when playing a HDR video on youtube, switch between landscape mode (fullscreen) and vertical mode (the mode where the video is only on the top of the screen).
-edit- The underlined part is for the Mate 20 Pro. Maybe the bar is also affected on LG? Anyway, there are two more (general) tips so you should be able to find out.
Another thing is that I noticed Netflix is now offering HDR on the Mate 20 Pro, but it doesn't look HDR to me. It is definitely going to HDR-mode as I can clearly see (as what I described above) the difference in color blue of the volume bar. But hey, does an already bright and saturated OLED display need HDR? Except for the wider color gamut of-course, which is really lovely on the video's with HDR on YouTube. Sometimes, with some scenes and probably specific colors, I find the display kind of 3D-isch. Which is very nice

Does the volume and brightness thing still hold true. I just got a replacement and the volume bar colour doesn't change anymore and It doesn't go to fully bright automatically like it did before. Content also looks same as my other none hdr phone.
Loving Huawei atm. On my 6th phone...

HDR for this phone is coming by Emiu related. I'm on. 153 version on later version there is support for HDR Netflix, is not related to the Netflix app, no its based on version of EMIU LATER THEN 153

I just checked it for you and come to find that it's different now.
TL;DR:
The answer is no, the brightness can now be changed and will not be set to max while in HDR mode and the blue of volume bar is hardly noticeable now (it's a lighter shade of blue now while in HDR mode).
This is on my YouTube app:
- Brightness can be adjusted now (before it was maxed out)
- The saturation of the blue in the volume bar is another hue, much less noticeable. Before it would to change to a darker tone (yet brighter, thanks to the HDR) of blue. Now it's a lighter tone of blue. Much less noticeable in my opinion.
You can check if a video on YouTube is playing in HDR by checking the quality it's playing in. It should say HDR after the resolution. If you question if the video is actually playing in HDR (despite it saying it's hdr), I recommend (I'm can't post links yet): paste this after youtube.com "/watch?v=tO01J-M3g0U&t=21s" . The image of the cheetah shouldn't have blown out white on it's belly, the details should remain visible in it's fur. To really check if the richer colors of HDR are being applied, I suggest comparing some hdr content with a monitor (not a TV as they use image enhancers).
As for Netflix:
- I didn't notice any difference, except for the volume bar having this brighter blue now. But that's because the volume bar isn't controlled by an app but by the system itself. So that's as expected.
- Not noticing a difference on Netflix isn't necessarily a bad thing. A movie might not have/want those popping colors of HDR (I'm comparing to the flashy HDR samples on YouTube for this, like the one I gave earlier). Also having an OLED screen is already what you might call "HDR" (having dark blacks and bright whites, while being able to see all the details in between the dark and light), it's only a matter of a wider color gamut to produce more popping colors, which again, might be different in the movie industry compared to the samples of HDR on YouTube. To truly test this, one should test it with an LCD screen.

Dark scenes difficult too see in movies

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 and it's great but I can't figure one thing out. Which is the screens contrast. Dark scenes in Netflix or VLC player are too dark and hard to see. I tried different brightness settings, with/without blue light filter and the other color correction option for cinematic mode but nothing really works properly.
Is this an issue with the tablet or is there another setting to change the contrast or something?

I also noticed this with Netflix. Was hoping that turning up the brightness would help but it doesn't.
YES, YES, YES, I am shocked this isn't widely reported, I couldn't find almost anything about it and I've been searching for quite a while.
First of all it is really crazy that popular apps like plex or netflix don't offer any capability to change the brightness of the video played. No, we don't change the colorspace, black levels, bla bla bla.
I DID find eventually a solution (the ONLY one that works, a bit clumsy as it is): http://phandroid.com/2016/03/22/twilight-app-reduces-dark-contrast-on-samsung-galaxy-s7/ (yes, it's for the S7 and yes I did notice there the same issue, which makes it even crazier that it isn't something widely known and fixed).
I just picked up an S3 last night and I'm having this same issue. I watched the opening scene of The Defenders on Netflix, and I could hardly tell what was going on. Rewatched it on a proper display, and you're clearly upposed to tell it's Danny Randy much earlier in the scene, but I had no idea in the S3 until a blue light was clearly shining on him from above.
I used Twilight on my Nexus 7 because it lacked a night vision mode, ala blue light filter on the S3. I'm not sure how that can really help. Surely other people have found more elegant solutions to this problem? I've opened up other media files and they're all simply too dark. I get it's an HDR screen, but surely it has a mode for non-HDR content!
Do oled display have a blue light problem, I though it was only really a led thing.
John.
Might be an inconsistency with the displays. I have no problem with mine. Not getting any lag either but running a heavy debloated rom also. Battery life could be better. It's stupid you can't turn off the Wacom digitizer when s pen not in use. On my note 4 when I lost my s pen battery life was terrible because the Wacom digitizer stayed on. Should be an option in settings to turn it off. If anyone knows how please let me know. I don't use the s pen very often.

Switching to modes other than Adaptive Display just gives me seemingly the same shade of yellow....
I have tab s2 and you can't change adaptive display. I wouldn't have bought this tablet if I'd known about this issue. Very annoyed.
I actually have the issue on my Samsung Tab S2, that the colors are really "hard" and lots of color information are missing in the video, details are lost in dark areas. Is there some fix for this or is the screen just too bad on the Tab S2? I know the Tab S3 has a HDR screen, and the S2 not. I dont have any HDR screens actually, but I can put color range to "full" on my desktop PC, which will en-light colors a bit, making details more pop out in dark areas (though black isnt fully black anymore if so).
Any color profile other than basic is mostly unusable, too much saturation. Still dark areas lack lots of information. Is there no way to fix this? I tested this actually
https://phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Screenshot_20160321-154452-400x711.png
and it helps with the details in dark areas, but it also makes the black bars of movies in Netflix and video players not black anymore but gray.
So from what i can tell, it's only a stock rom problem. As the screen looks amazing running liniage (best screen in the house). But I've recently decided to go back to stock debloated, as I think its running a bit snappier than liniage 16 or 17.
Has anyone found a black level fix for stock yet? (preferably not a screen tint app)

:cyclops: It's beyond what you're suggesting which is known :cyclops: but thanks for it
EDIT: I have now found a full workaround. First you need to enable Blue Light Filter. Then go to Settings > Accessibility > Visibility enhancements > Color adjustment > Personalized color, and choose all the colors in the correct order. If you do it correctly there won't be any change to the colors and Blue Light Filter will be "on", but actually not, which will override whatever Android is doing that's making the dark parts of movies way darker than they should be. So far I haven't found any cons of this workaround.
Original post:
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but after trying to fix this problem for like half a day (lol) I think I found the best workaround so far. If you turn on Blue Light Filter and set its opacity to minimum, the filter will be barely noticable, but the brightness issue will be fixed.
One thing I noticed is that not all apps have this problem. For example VLC, Youtube do have it (you can even see the transition of colors and brightness for a second when exiting to desktop view). However Youtube Vanced doesn't have this issue, so I asssume the operating system does this dumb change of colors when it sees certain parameters in an app (maybe something in the manifest.json file?). It would be awesome if some more knowledgeable people could look into this issue, maybe they could find something about why YT Vanced has normal colors.

Samsung S9 HDR playback bug?

Hi guys I just wanted to check if anyone else is having this issue whilst attempting to play HDR content with their S9 plus or S9. When I play a video on YouTube that's HDR compatible the display kind of mutes the colors and reverts back to photo mode during playback.. not the dynamic mode with vivid colors. Even if I have dynamic display selected and video enhancer on it still goes back to a washed out photo mode whilst HDR plays. Anyone else having this issue? Maybe samsung have gone with the more accurate colors during HDR now on purpose but I doubt it and it seems like a bug. I have the s9 plus exynos model. Cheers.

Yup me too on youtube...
Hope they'll fix this.
This is a common issue on Oreo, and you can fix it by setting the brightness to max. Haven't experienced it myself after the latest firmware update (ARC5).
It does not happen on my S9+. (U.S. unlocked)
Hopefully they fix this.. it comes and goes . Sometimes it's fine and others it reverts back to photo mode throughout the entire video.
Still not fix or acknowledgement from Samsung. Pretty poor. This a long with crap battery life and overheating it's not a great start.
Brightness sometimes fluctuates by itself while watching HDR videos on youtube on my SD845 S9+ which I can "fix" by turning brightness to max but otherwise HDR never shuts off for me. I have a feeling the exynos variant is the cause of a lot of problems as I keep hearing about crap battery life on Exynos versions too
I have the same issue, posted on Samsung Community on the day the phone arrived on the 9th March.
Didn't want to repeat what I said, also have images in one post to compare S8 to S9+.
https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/Galaxy-S9-S9/S9-Mobile-HDR-not-enabled/td-p/441848
As of today still no fix or acknowledgment of the bug by Samsung..
Boxing it up and getting a refund tomorrow.
Do a hard reset after the update, now my SD845 S9+ works perfectly.
Yes my screen flickers when watching HDR video on auto brightness. When set to MAX it seems fine.

I've searched that however the brightness doesn't change unless I manually do it
Brightness changing is artificially enhancing the video but has nothing to really do with the HDR.
Just turn your brightness up manually to full.

P30 pro features/issues people don't talk about much

Hi there,
I wanted to start a discussion about stuff that we like/dislike about this phone, but not the obvious stuff - rather things that are not much talked about. When I read about this phone, most popular topics are about fingerprint sensor, screen resolution, 50x zoom, night mode...
So first, things I don't like:
1. Aspect ratio issues:
- No 16:9 photos aspect ratio.
- Screen 19.5:9 aspect ratio can cause issues in games/applications that only support 16:9 aspect ratio. It's not a huge issue, because most apps support wide screen. It's also the same for other wide screen phones.
- Screen mirroring to TV - because of 19.5:9 aspect ratio, there are black bars on top and bottom, so when you are viewing 4:3 photos on 16:9 TV, the photo is very small and shown only in the center of TV with black bars around it. I don't know how other wide screen phones work, but I guess the same way.
2. Camera:
- There is no way to force the camera app to use the optical 5x zoom in photo mode/videos when the light is low. For me it was a huge issue when I was recording a concert and the camera was jumping constantly between 5x optical and digital zooms. Digital had more view on scene where the light was good, so it jumped to optical lens, optical view is out of sync so bigger part of view was on the dark crowd and it jumped back to optical again. There was no way to record it with zoom.
- How different lenses view is synced - widescreen and normal 1x are in sync when changing between them, you get basically the picture in the same position, but 5x optical and normal are just so much out of sync, that it is very very visible how it switches when you go from 4.9x to 5x. Not a huge issue, but it could be better.
- There is no level indicator in other modes than pro.
3. Speaker:
- The quality is OK at most, when compared to Samsung for example (Samsung S10 has amazing speakers), but it's a phone after all, so I don't expect much anyway.
Now things I like:
1. Huawei Share. My god, this thing is amazing. You can just connect your PC to your phone with WiFi and browse files normally as if it was connected with a usb cable! That is truly amazing. I didn't have it in Xiaomi, newest Samsung phones also don't have it. Why nobody talks about this amazing feature?
2. Camera app:
- Amazing zoom possibilities, 5x zoom which I'm using constantly during my trips and I don't know how people can say they don't use it much. There is something called perspective and this photo shows what I'm talking about. You can get especially amazing pictures when you have mountains in the background. So much discussed 50x zoom is not really usable, but 20x still has amazing quality.
- All different modes, especially the light painting/silky water is nice. Also the pro mode with so many different settings and 30 seconds shutter time. There are much more modes and possibilities than most youtube reviewers show us. They usually just show night mode, 5x zoom, 50x zoom and that's it. Like that's just 10% of options in that app! When you really start knowing the app, it is just much better than Samsung or Xiaomi camera apps. You can shoot much better pictures when you know what you are doing.
3. EMUI:
- I really like this system, the icons, design, features, it's really nice. I don't know how anyone can 'hate' this system? I came to EMUI from Xiaomi and Samsung phones and for me it's just better.
Huawei P30 Pro is my first Huawei phone and I must say I'm really impressed by the price/quality ratio. What are your thoughts?
Point 2: tray to rec videos with opencam or edgecam. You can choose 1x camera and zoom in or you can choose 5x camera. No changes between they.
"2. Camera:

this to me is a huge issue...as i was trying to photo one of our dogs in evening time and it would only zoom via digital.....every now and then it would flicker to ultra clear optical but not for long enough to get a shot.
no workaround at all for it ?...i see no mention of it in google searches.
i can imagine being in the same situation as you recording a gig and that would be troublesome.

Yes, for photo it works, but then you get no AI... Also normal photo AI handles the 5x zoom when light is low better than pro, I guess it takes digital zoom which is bright and merges it with optical which is dark
As for the video, I tried the open camera, but from what I can see, it only allows to switch between normal 1x and 5x zoom, but when you zoom to 5x it works the same as huawei built in cam app... So it switches to digital and back to optical all the time.
Edgecam also allows you to use all the lenses

With edgecam or opencam you can choose the lense.
If you choose 1x lense an make zoom is only digital zoom.
For 5x optical zoom you must change to 5x lense.

Mine stays on optical all the time in video.
Yes pictures are generally better with AI but OC enables you to stay with optical even when light is low.
Issue :ghost notifications.
By ghost notifications i mean there is a sound and vibration but nothing else. Now I am pretty used to them, but from day one and after a couple of updates, they are still present. Question Videos are washed out in many apps such as Google Photos/Chrome

Hello all,
This has been an issue since I got the pixel 6 at launch. When playing videos, the shadows appear washed out. It appears to be some sort of gamma shift or HDR tone mapping issue. This happens when in google photos, chrome browser, imgur, even other apps. (youtube is fine).
I've confirmed in person this happens to other pixels one of which was pixel 6 pro.
The issue is recorded here:
I tried changing the color setup under display options in system settings, turning off H265 in camera settings, booting into safe mode, forcing 60hz refresh rate, but it still washes out the videos.
This does not happen with videos shot by other phones, for example my wife's iPhone shot video then sent it over to me and the gamma shift does not happen...
Strange thing is, in Chrome while playing the video, as soon as I swipe up from the bottom to open the recent apps, the video jumps back to normal as seen here:
https://imgur.com/a/Va3l5fQ
I reported this to google, and their chat support to me to fully nuke my phone to factory....
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening, and could other Pixel 6 users verify it's happening on their devices as well ?
Thank you

I seldom shoot video with phones and usually don't like to reference reviews. But from what you described Dxomark's summary about video performance is looking to be spot-on.
Google Pixel 6 Camera review: An outstanding performer in its segment - DXOMARK
The Google Pixel 6 camera displayed an outstanding performanc and is currently the best option for photographers who prefer smaller devices.
www.dxomark.com
My experience with dark objects in still photos has been somewhat similar. Recently I couldn't get enough detail photographing black camera bodies I'm selling online. Even with direct light from a daylight LED lamp I ended up using night mode. Every speck of dust showed up which wasn't ideal either.
Over all, though, I like the Pixel 6 camera.

I reported this to google, and their chat support to me to fully nuke my phone to factory....
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening, and could other Pixel 6 users verify it's happening on their devices as well ?
Thank you

Did you ever find an answer to this? I'm having the same issue... though it's not for every video, just in certain programs/websites.
Cheers.
I've been able to remedy this in chrome by turning off HW Overlays in Developer Options.
It's still an issue in Google Photos.

Sorry if I didin't understand it at first, the toggle to disable HW Overlays in the developer options will always turn off again, at least in Pixel 6, so that's what confused me

Huh it stays on on note 10 . In that case i am not shure how u can keep it on. Can u elaborate on when it turn itself off back again?
Weird, after I turn it on, I can go to any other screen on the phone, if I come back the toggle it´s off again, maybe it´s a bug on my end, here´s the example
