USB OTG not working, any ideas why - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

One problem i have is that I cant get USB OTG to work, want to copy some videos from a hard drive, worked perfectly fine on Note 9 but cant do it on my Mate 20 Pro any ideas why? it just doesnt detect the usb drive.

I have the same problem with a USB card reader and my camera connected to the Mate 20 Pro.
But my Samsung T3 SSD is working without issue.
Very annoying!

I actually have the some problems reading my otg with a USB drive connected. The connection is intermittent. Sometimes it can read the drive and sometimes it can't. I tried it on my P20 Pro and it's working fine. It will be great if others can try it out and review it here.
I'm on version 9.0.0.183 (patch05). Thanks

I had the same issue with OTG on my Huawei Mate 20 Pro. It was a micro SD-card that I had in my ActionCam, connected to a micro SD card reader and into my phone. (only provided me with reverse charge under USB options on the phone. When I changed to another option, it just jumped back to "Reverse charge". All other phones and computers could read the card, not my Huawei. I formatted the micro SD card on my PC, and voala, my phone could no also read the card, via OTG reader.

[Q] USB OTG mounts microSD via USB adapter?

I use the USB OTG cable to mount USB flash drives on the Galaxy S II, no problem. I tried putting a micro-SD card in a USB adapter and mounting that via OTG, but the micro-SD card is never recognized. I get no notice of media scanner running, etc. Yet, this same USB/micro-SD combo works fine in my laptop. Any suggestions how to get it to work with the SGS2?
Actually, this worked with a different, better quality USB-microUSB adapter.

[Q] USB Thumb drive or card reader?

I am trying to get my 101 G9 (8 gig classic) running ICS Stock to recognise a USB thumb drive or a usb card reader. I've tried the USB cable to the micro USB port and the 3g USB port on the back but to no avail. I've see various threads that say that others have gotten it to work, but I can't figure out how.
Is it possible to use a thumb drive on the 101?

yes stick it in the 3g port and turn 3g on in the settings, then browse with a file browser
I've tried that. Turn on 3g stick. wait a few minutes. plug in thumb drive. Not recognised. I've tried this with mine and a brand new (on HC) that belongs to a friend.

try putting in the thumb drive then turning it on
I've had a similar problem like this as well. looking through the logs it looks like the USB bus does goto sleep to conserve power and does not seem to wake up properly in my opinion.
What I've done to 'wake' it up before does require that you have rooted your device.
1) Open up Terminal Emulator or your choice of terminal.
2) Naviagate to /dev/bus/usb/001 (ie: type: cd /dev/bus/usb/001 )
3) type: cat 001
A few lines of garbage might show up but for me it has woke up the USB bus and read the usb drive I had inserted then I can unmount it normally through android.
Thanks to all the offers of information.
I'll give them a try.
hi!
I use usb adapter for sd card which in turn is inserted into USB OTG adapter. It gives me hot swap for sd card by the way. Try this approch in your case.

V30 Doesn't Recognize USB stick

I have used a USB stick with many different Samsung phones, and when the USB stick is inserted, a window pops up on the phone, and you can transfer files back and forth.
My friend's V10 works this way.
But on my V20, and now V30, there is no response at all to inserting a USB stick. If I connect The V20 or V30 to a PC with a USB cable, files can be transferred as expected. But inserting a USB stick doesn't work.
I've tried various settings on the phone (multi-media host, etc) and nothing changes it.
Has anyone else tried this? Can you read a USB stick?
Could you try going to Settings>Storage and see if you can see the USB stick there?

Thanks for your suggestion. The storage screen shows internal memory and an SD card, but not the USB stick. I posted this same question a year ago about the V20, and didn't get much feedback then, either. Maybe it's not common for people to use a USB stick with their phone.
Maybe try one of the usb otg reader apps on the play store

I remember when I got a pixel several years ago, and I had to use this.

.
to see the stick...

( hope this helps )
Thanks for the app suggestions. I tried a couple OTG readers with no success. Stickmount sounds promising, but it requires root, so I can't try it just yet.
Could you please try with an external harddisk and let us know if that works?

Mine works. When I put drive in, it asked how I wanted to recognize the usb device (Charge, power supply, media, photos, etc). I kept it on power supply and my drive is mounted and available.
There might be a couple things to look at...
1. Is your dongle/cable data capable? WIth USB C, there are some differences with USB 2/3 and only charge capable.
2, Have you tried messing with the developer settings for USB? You can try to force it to data instead of charge.
What file system is the USB flash memory formatted for?

Thank you.
I use one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AUKU1OO/
and my phone recognizes USB flash drives with no issue.
i have a note 5 and V20 and now the V30 (well i just got rid of the note 5 and v20 but had did testing on both ports previously).
i have a usb to otg cable. i also have a RTL-SDR device. from the play store i downloaded the rtl-sdr driver and sdrtouch app (did this to all my phones).
the rtl-sdr dongle was not recognized on the V30 and i would really love to know how to fix this.
the v20 and note 5 and currently my note 3 all worked with no problem.
i wonder since i now have to use my lg g5 type-c to female micro-usb adapter that it makes it not work correctly?
maybe we need a usb 2 otg cable that has usb type-c on the end?
otg or host mode not working 100%
Hi,
just got my V30 plus H930DS (nice shiny blue actually ) and plugged in a couple of usb flash drives and a multi adapter card reader and nothing.
But... just picked a AUKEY USB 3 to USB-A adapter cable and instantly recognised a 4gb flash drive.
Tried another 16GB flash drive but got a message about needing to fix it. As there was not much on there I said yes, warning that everything will be deleted, then 2 seconds later, message says its ok and now working fine for copy copy/paste.
The flash drive was formatted by the phone to FAT32 (it was ntfs before)
I also tried exFAT formatted from windows and that worked so that would help with >4GB files.
The bottom line is that you need a good make cable which is specifically for USB-3 and either FAT 32 or exFAT. Best bet is to plug in the flash drive and if the phone wants to format it then do it that way.
Just a heads up, i know both the samsung OTG adapter and the pixel 2 OTG adapter work with the v30. I use them myself.

Only the V30+ comes with some goodies, which is the B&O play headphones. I get to unbox all the new phones as part of my job and I end up with adapters from all sorts of devices.
I prefer the Pixel OTG as it works with a case on and seems very durable.
All of my OTG drives, which I used on my HTC M8, work on the V30 also. If it doesn't tell you it's working, go to settings and mount it.

Otg not working in Mate 10 Pro

Hi.
I just bought my mate 10 pro and love it.
But I just notice that the otg doesnt wotk, or I dont know if hauwei needs a apecial adaptor or what.
I come from a LG V20 and I normally use a 4 in 1 card reader to conect it directly and it was great, now I try it in my mate and it doesnt detect, I bought a ner 4 in 1 card reader and is the same, do I need to enable something or any one has an idea of what could be the problem.
Thanks

i hav two type c dongle nd an adaptor,it reads/detect the sd card but goes blank just as quick.when i plug in two notification pops up one sd/usb ready to use nd the other is 5 options like reverse charging,transfer.....
dunno where the prob is
Mine works fine (BLA-L29)
im having the same problem. just got this phone, and trying to use a protable hdd which worked with my Galaxy Note 8, Oneplus 6 and laptop. It just comes up with reverse charging. When i select MTP it just reverts back to reverse charging straight away. Please, any help or info would be appreciated. TIA
Looks like your adaptor is not supported. The Mate 10 Pro support anything (mouse, storage, keyboard.. ), got USB 3.1 and display port 1.2
ALP-L29 8.0.0.141 (c636)
Moving this thread up.
For the past two days now, I have encountered the same problem. When I plug in my HD via the OTG adaptor, I only get a notification for how the USB can be used, but I am unable to toggle between reverse charging and file transfer. It only goes to reverse charging. Any time you select file transfer, it goes back to reverse charging.
This also happened yesterday, and after unplugging and plugging the device again, I was able to mount the HD. Today, I don't have the same luck.
I'm using a uGreen OTG adaptor and a 1TB WD hard drive which I used flawlessly even with my old phones (Huawei P8 and P10Plus). I've used the same combo with my current Mate10 before, but I have encountered this problem after the latest update (for GPU Turbo).
Help?!
I try 2 different OTG and neither work. One for Radio shack and another Xtech. my Cellphone model BLA-L29. Any clue?

Reading an external SD Card

Hi
I want to get my 6T to read SD Cards from a trail cam. I purchased one from UGreen and it has almost no instructions. I can't get it to work. I did put the phone in OTG mode. I had to use an adapter from Micro USB to USB Type C. There is no indication that it is connecting. Any ideas?
If anyone has been able to do this on the 6T, even if it means buying a new adapter, let me know how.
Thanks
John
Do you have OTG storage enabled in system settings?
"OTG storage" is enabled. Are there any other OTG settings that also need to be set?
You need an OTG cable. That should work since that's how I transferred all of my photos from my micro SD card (in a card reader) to my 6T. I doubt directly plugging the card reader via adapter would work.
1. Buy a OTG microSDHC card reader.
2.Check the tipe of the files on card.
The unit is OTG but it has an micro USB fitting and I am using a micro USB to USB Type C adapter. Could that be the problem? I don't see how, the adapter should be straight through. I don't think it is a file issue, the 6T does not even see card. I might just try another reader.
use the app WiFi explorer, and you can transfer anything and everything wirelessly, via wifi..those files on your sd card need to be on another computer or somewhere they can be "seen"..
This one has been working great for me. I've used an older otg micro to A adapter with no problems before though. Could just be a faulty adapter on your end.
Yaotl, I can't figure out anything else but the reader. I think I will give the Anker reader you suggested a try.
Thanks for the help,
John
I purchased another reader. Works perfectly. Thanks for all the help. Especially, Yaotl.
