Incorrect "storage space running out" problems - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Solved: Chromecast app takes everything. Probably because of screwed up DRM.
Device: Android TV box : Mi box 3 International version . Oreo (including second update) 8GB internal
I keep getting "storage space running out" messages. BUT I have only 3 apps installed. Even a factory reset doesn't help. The device does show the actual space available 2.6GB and a few hours later just randomly reverts to "storage space running out"
Problem is that the OS really thinks there is no space, as many functions stop working...
Apps I have : kodi , xplore2 , SonyLiv. The sonyliv app is very recent, so should be ok.
These problems started well after upgrading to Oreo
disk mapping apps also report 0 Free space. But they fail to show where the space is being used.
Cache use is about 40 - 150 MB
What to do ?

Solved: Chromecast app was the culprit. Taking over 3GB . I guess this happens because I screwed up the DRM when I had tried upgrading to nougat beta...
offtopic: Many times (more than coincidence) after asking some question, I stumble upon the solution. This happens so many times. "mom where is my bag" , *turns around to find it staring at me. Tooooo many times!! these are not coincidences! Answer me Universe !!

[Q]Galaxy Ace S5830 Storage Space Issues CM10.2

Hello Everyone.
I own a Samsung Galaxy Ace (S5830) and until 2 days ago i was running a CM7 on it until it suddenly just stopped working and the phone hung in some kind of boot loop. That's when i decided to "upgrade" to a newer version of CM and searched for everything necessary.
I tried some CM11 alpha but since it's pretty unstable (at least the version i had was) i tried others until i settled for a stable 10.2 version (cm-10.2-20140309-UNOFFICIAL-cooper++). So far i am pretty happy since it actually is running very smoothly on my phone and i did not expect that at all. But then i ran into the same issue that basically everyone owning this phone runs into - it's very limited internal space.
Fact is i do need some google apps since i'm using gmail and synchronizing my contacts through it. Also i want to use Whatsapp, basically the only reason for me having a smartphone right now. I Installed the Dolphin Browser aswell since a decent browser is also something i'd like to use from time to time, but it seems to be full on external anyways so it should not count towards the internal storage.
Problem is now, all that is already too much for the phone's internal storage to handle since whatsapp has to stay on internal - at least that's my experience - and the google-play services that are needed aswell are placed on internal too without option of moving them.
I tried some things but basically all of them failed on one or another weird way..
- titanium backup - uninstalled system apps that i am not using (radio, browser, google play voice things, etc.) but after a reboot they were all back again. Even before rebooting, uninstalling them seemed not to open up space at all.
- Link2SD - tried linking whatsapp to my SD card, failed since whatsapp wasn't running very stable anymore. If anyone has a solution for this i'd love to hear it!
- App2SD - didn't even show any internal apps, and wasn't helping at all.
Also something i've tried, i have a message backup for whatsapp that's ~14mb but lies on my SD card. Problem seems to be that Whatsapp on recovering these messages put's them somewhere on the internal storage, at least it takes those ~14mb away from it after it recovered them. I tried to change the path whatsapp uses for internal storing of data with the app 'FolderMount' (like i found tutorials on the internet for exactly this issue) but wasn't even able to locate the internal stored data :/ Not because i just didn't find it, but because it seems not to exist...
I know i can't really increase the size of the internal storage but i think there has to be something i can do. I can't even update whatsapp since i am just living on the edge of the "low storage space" message with 20-15mb left.
What i am hoping now through this thread is to get some ideas or options how i could free up some space, move some apps around to SD maybe (utilize Link2SD correctly) or in the end basically have the things i need but some free storage on internal so that i can use my phone, maybe even install apps on SD (without them touching internal space) and have some room to update the important apps like whatsapp.

ThePatchelist

Just upgraded to CM 12.1 from stock JB ROM - Storage space running out problem

Hello
I'm having a little trouble understanding what is going on because this never occurred to me. I have just installed to new CM 12.1 Nightly on my old Galaxy S2 (I9100 Model). I came from the just ROM JB 4.1.3 as I was sure this phone could handle much more than that. Expectations were high and they were met. Although I had some problems installing the KitKat compatible recovery, I eventually did it and it all works well for now - well, except one little annoying thing: after installing about 10 apps the phone started complaining about the internal storage running out.
First thing I do is to check the 'Storage' option in Settings to make sure about the actual space being used. I have 1,96GB total space and at this point the bar was almost filled showing that, in fact, I had about 100MB free space left. I then go to the 'Apps' option to move as many as I could to the SD card. All could be moved except for Google Play Services which itself takes about 200MB. To my surprise, although the apps were supposedly moved to SD card, if I go check the each App Info I still see that almost all space the Apps take is still being stored in the 'internal storage'. Almost nothing is stored in the SD card even if the app was "moved". I also made sure I cleaned the cache of every app.
I go ahead and check the 'Storage' option again. This time I paid attention to the actual details it shows. Once I enter this option the following screen appears: dnuno. pt (slash)outros(slash)screen2. png
After a while of "calculations" the bar changes and I end up with this: dnuno. pt(slash)outros(slash)screen3.png
(Please add www to the front of the links, remove the spaces and add the \ as I don't have the permission to post outside links yet)
No other statistics other than 'Available space' and 'Apps' appear and as the bar indicates I still have a lot of space left at least 1GB. With the previous JB ROM I started running out of space only much later and I had lots of other apps installed.
Somehow the available space is stuck on that value (166MB) even after all the calculations have been made.
I wasn't able to find any reference to this particular version of the 'storage space running out' problem and I'm unaware of possible solutions to this as well. I hope someone can redirect me to some other thread, post or something that could help me out. Also I couldn't post in the original CM 12.1 thread for I9100 because I have just registered.
Thank you in advance.

Showcopy? Taking up disk space

Hi All,
I noticed I almost had no more disk space on my phone. I checked all my storage and there didn't seem to be that much being used.
As I have root, i ran "DiskUsage" app and found the location:
/data/data/com.google.android.apps.photos/files/shadowcopies to have 6GB in use!
I didn't know my phone takes backups or anything, but I actually deleted all the files in there as it was using up too much space and I haven't had any issues (so far)
Has anyone else noticed this or know what's going on?
I know in Windows there's shadow copy, but on my phone? really??
Yup, same problem here. Nexus 5X, LineageOS 15.1. I have the same solutions -- just delete it and everything works fine. Mine was 12 GB today and Android started complaining. I tried deleting app data (aka fresh install), but I don't think it'll help. What surprises me the most is that there is not much more public outcry about that issue.

RAM - Internal Memory problem

Hello everyone,
I don't know if there is any mention of this problem anywhere or it's been a common issue for Huawei devices, so please link me to the thread if there is.
So my Mediapad M5 has 4GB of RAM. Normally after a restart, there is about 2.5GB of free RAM presented. But after a couple of days of average usage, the free RAM starting to decrease. This is expected of course, but when the RAM decrease to about 500MB, the tablet becomes unusable. Apps couldn't be opened, current running apps constantly restarted and lagged. I tried to use the Tablet management app (come with EMUI) to optimise the system, but the problem still exists, and the RAM is still at 5-600MB.
I also tried to close all of the services in the Running services from the Developer option, but still, the "System processes" still took like 3.5GB of RAM, and with no other services or app running (not of I aware and the setting displayed), like in the screenshot I took:
drive.google.com/file/d/1ix27K_GjOahWLr-09U5Lfizn2vXbf_fE/view?usp=sharing
(Sorry I can't parse the image here, but here is the Google drive link)
I also tried to reset the tablet and install only some apps to test it, including Rotation manager, Netflix and VLC, and use them at normal rate. After a couple of days, like 4 days, the problem arises, and the only solution for me is to restart the device.
I also tried the option to Manually/Automatically manage apps launching in the Battery manager, but the problem still persists.
Is there any option that I haven't known of or haven't tried? The device works great until it's running out of RAM, and it seems like it don't know how to release them. Or maybe there is a leakage problem, I don't know.
Thank for reading! Have a nice day.
Editted: I'm in EMUI 9, Android 9, non-rootted

Question Realme gt and gt me media storage app talking too much space

One big issue nobody talks about or is completely unaware about is that everytime you download or store any media like movies, not only does the original space of the movie gets occupied, the media storage app in the phone magically increases the exact same amount of storage usage. You could verify it yourself by going into storage and select the view system apps option. So for example if you download a 2 gb movie, instead of going from 62-60gb storage space, it goes from 62-58gb storage space. This is very big issue which is also faced by many OnePlus devices. You cannot force stop the media storage app or delete any data or cache in it. The only temporary solutions which worked for some is deleting the recycle bin data, clearing unwanted data using files app and maybe resetting your device but the fact that this issue exists is a huge problem and is still unresolved for many users. I hope someone might be able to solve this issue or could at least help make realme aware about this issue.
Google has already solved it with Pixel 5. But Chinese manufacturers seem, kind of, lost in translation
Jokes apart, I have this same problem with OP 9RT and am really tired of deleting my videos, photos again and again..... Android 12 didn't solve it and after Oxygen OS 12 I have little hope that Android 13 will be any better.

I think I might have been wrong, after further inspection the Google files app showed the proper storage. I think it may be a problem of the storage app showing wrong storage for some reason instead of actually losing storage. I don't remember correctly if the issue was on the storage options in setting or Google files itself.

Are you sure?
Asking as I also used many Storage apps, like SD Maid etc. and some of them actually did not show the space taken by Media Storage app! As per them the storage was fine and free there.....
But then I found out that when the Media Storage size went over 50-52Gb, I couldn't install a huge game, like Genshin in my phone any more as Play Store showed the message that I have to uninstall some apps to make space!!!
So apparently, at least in my 9RT, the Play Store/System is considering the space shown in Media Storage as real!
This is the present situation in my phone, after many resets ....
Out of this 40Gb apps, the Media Storage is taking 30Gb....
Which, by now, I'm sure is consisting of that 25Gb videos and other app data
All I can hope for now is by some miracle, OP fix it or that Google brings the Pixel 7 to India...... as at least they listen to the Bug reports and do solve them even if it takes some time. OP 9 Pro has this problem since launch, and by now, in almost 1 year One Plus couldn't solve it....so I really have very little hope from them now.

How much storage do you have left? Cause I just looked into and remembered that you don't have to worry too much about the media storage app taking your space cause I don't think it actually affects your space even though it shows in your settings.
My phone has a total internal space of 256gb(my phone doesn't have a sd slot also) and as you can see, I've only used 204gb of my space but adding all the storage shown below(especially the video and app storage) I've almost used 300gb space which is almost impossible.
Another example is my Google files app which literally shows I've used 297gb even though my phone literally has a 256gb internal storage. So I think it's safe to assume that the media storage app doesn't actually cause much issue and you don't have to worry about it too much.
Interesting!
My Google Files is showing I have 66GB free (out of 128GB). But Downloads(4.1)+Videos (25) + Docs (4.7) + Apps (40) is totaling to 73.8GB. That comes to a total of 74+66 = 140GB!!!!
Now, taking that (as per Files) I have 66GB free, I have used up 62GB already. That may be as - Videos(25)+Downloads(4.1)+Docs (4.7)+ about 28GB of System, may be? I don't have any idea how much space Android 11/12 takes now a days....
Tomorrow I will fill my phone with some more videos to take the Media Storage app size to around 60GB at least (need some 35GB of movie files, which fortunately I have This should make the device think that I have used up all of my 128GB (incl. system) space. And then I will again try to install Genshin/WOT Blitz/Grid , any one game of about 3-4-5GB and see what the system says......
As it's past 12:30 at night in my end, I'm switching off for today now....Will report tomorrow about the storage experiment! Take care, bye!

Hi!!!
Became so busy I couldn't come to this thread.....
As per my last post, I filled up my phone towards up to 60GB and yup, my total storage went well over 128GB as per Files app And yeah, Play Store didn't let me install a small game of about 10MB as it showed the message of no space available.
Lost the screenshots, as I hard reset the phone again on the advice of some OnePlus customer care service provider. No result, it's still the same......

So i guess apart from installing new apps after the fake storage filled situation, i guess we won't be having much problems.

Well, lol, looks like that....
The short time I had with my Phone being over 128GB in size, it performed normal tasks well, no lag. But, can we record Videos/photos in that situation? As I just hard reset my phone, it will take some time to get filled up again. So I suppose, this time you'll have to test if we can record videos when our phones get well over their storage limits , provided you have the time off course
Did you by chance try using a third party app store or apk files for installing apps when the storage was "overfull"?

Never used any Third Party App Store. It was pure Android 12 issue which OnePlus developers didn't have the time to fix. It is solved now in Android 13.
