Mate 20 Pro OTG Power Bug - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Another bug i noticed is the OTG. I noticed that there is a limit in terms for power draw a USB-C OTG device can receive from the USB-C port of the Mate 20 Pro. USB Power automatically shutsdown depending on a certain current draw and the scenario is somewhat random. This error has been persistent until now with the current version of the F/W (.126)
Although from the phone notification, "Supplying power to the connected device over USB" is present, you will notice from the LED indicator of device attached to the USB port shuts down right after you plug it. If you attempt to re-plug it, usb power is randomly restored.
I am using a USB-C usb hub with HDMI port as the OTG device. I tested this device with another phone (P10, Samsung, etc), power is stable.

I actually have the some problems reading my otg with a USB drive connected. The connection is intermittent. Sometimes it can read the drive and sometimes it can't. I tried it on my P20 Pro and it's working fine. It will be great if others can try it out and review it here.
I'm on version 9.0.0.183 (patch05). Thanks

No otg problem hdmi desktop mode
I am on emui 9.0.0.198 and I have no problem connecting my television through hdmi without extra power. Although at first the connection failed (tv screen showing red stripes and intermittently switching to black screen) and I had to change hdmi cable. Desktop mode worked fine after that hdmi replacement. Maybe just hdmi does not draw much power.

Mate 20 pro.
I bought a usb-c to hdmi cable, it connected to my new LG PC monitor a few times with no problems. But recently (no sure when or why) it will not connect to the monitor but it will connect fine to my Samsung series 7 TV.
The phone notification says the phone is supplying power to the usb device.

I have a ugreen 16gb USB/usb c flash that I used to use on my p20 lite and it worked fine. I tried it with my mate 20 pro and it does not work. I also have a hdmi/usb c for desktop mode and that works with no issue.

I purchased USB c / female USB adapter and when I plug in my OTG USB memory (that does not work when plugged into the phone) now works perfectly.

Woohoo, so I got this delivered today! I unboxed and plugged it into my Samsung Chromebook Plus straight away. I plugged in HDMI and instantly detected my TV and extended the screen.
Next I plugged in the stock charger and the SCP detected and started charging, so pass through usb type-c power delivery working great at 28.5W. (NOTE: I plugged in my Xentris/verizon charger and the charger LED would blink and cause the SCP to "detect" and drop, until it caused it to reboot. I also tested the Motorola Turbo Power 30 and it alerted on screen that it was connected to a low power charger at 9.5W).
I then plugged in a Sandisk Cruzer Slide with file manager open, it detected and made it's contents available.
Took an ethernet cable plugged into the multiport, then the router. The Wifi icon disappeared. Ran a speedtest via browser, got max speed and I am currently online via the ethernet posting this summary review.
So far so good, if you have questions or like me to test anything lmk.
i have a USB-C desktop hub and a bunch of other USB-C accessories I'm going to new chrombook plus as well, and you've inspired my to post about them (hope others can find it helpful like i did with your post)

USB-C hub with HDMI port and can charge Huawei P20 Pro?

Anyone know of a USB-C hub that can charge a P20 Pro while also having it connected to a monitor?
thx.
I can help create a blacklist I am using this one:
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B079HQ5X6L
Similar to this one:
https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07B8XM66W
The former does not charge the device. The moment the USB hub is connected, the P20 Pro disables charging and instead puts out power to the hub to power the USB devices, card Reader, GPU, Network and soundcard.
It does recognize the charging cable as indicated in the topbar but currently it's impossible to force the p20 pro to go into charging mode. I think this can be solved by Huawei. I think it's not the hubs fault.
I guess you won't find a hub that does charge the p20 pro as long as Huawei doesn't find a way to mount devices but not try to power them itself.
BR
Good luck
thx Moritz. I ended up getting a HooToo usb-c hub. Not as many ports as the Azdome one you have; just 3 x USB-A, SD card reader, HDMI, and a USB-C port. But cheap (CDN$60) enough.
Ya, it's too bad the P20 Pro won't allow charging while using a hub. Hope Huawei has a workaround for this in the future.
Let me add a new device to your blacklist:
Microsoft HD-500 (the one provided with some high end Lumia, like 950XL).
See this as Samsung DEX before DEX exists.
Here, the only thing it does is charging the phone. Nothing else. Too bad, I've got two of them.

I was wrong; turns out all I needed was a PD-capable charger along with PD-capable hub. So I got a PD charger from the local BestBuy store today, plugged it into my current PD-capable HooToo USB-C hub, and voila...my Pro charges fine with it plugged into an HDMI monitor thru the hub.
I am using a "TRUST #21260 USB-C multiport adapter" together with a "Apple 61W USB-C power adapter".
That setup is charging my phone at 2.7 A while hdmi out is active.
The charging rate is somewhere in between normal and super charging.
A cheaper power adapter that also works with my hub is the "COOSA type-c power adapter PDS75-4UT01" but only if i use its USB-C PD port , the USB-A ports don't work .

USB DAC /Dragonfly over OTG frequently disconnects/reinitialises

Hi,
I've seen this thread which may be related: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3866913
I have a Mate 20 Pro linked to a Dragonfly Red DAC using an OTG cable from the USB C port. Regardless of music playing app (e.g. USB Audio Player Pro, TIDAL) the music cuts out periodically due to failing to detect the connected DAC. Sometimes it re-detects and re-initialises successfully, other times it requires unplugging the dac and reconnecting.
The phone's USB C port has behaved fine for charging and data transfer when connected to a computer
The Dragonfly DAC has behaved fine when plugged directly into computer's USB port.
This could be a physical defect/connectivity issue in the OTG cable (I don't currently have a spare to test with) or it could be an issue with the phone shutting down the USB device. My immediate suspicion related to power/battery management but having ploughed through the settings I can't see anything obviously relevant.
I plan to try:
- another OTG cable
- testing with the phone battery fully charged
- testing with the phone's battery explicitly set to 'High Performance'
Anyone seen this/anything similar?
Thanks.
This is happening to me also with the same phone.
Its not the cable.
Apparently this phone has an issue with the USB driver.
I just brought Fiio KA3 usb DAC i am using POCO F1 with Oxygen OS ....
1st day i didn't encounter anything like this but now its happening after 5-7 mins every time it disconnected and reconnect automatically...

Connecting V30 to Ext DAC Put It In Power Supply Mode ?

I want use the V30 as a streaming audio device and connect it to my HiFi setup via external DAC - audiolabs mini M-DAC. This DAC has an PC/Android OTG micro USB port for connectivity and also a built in battery for optional portable use. I leave the DAC plugged into power and don’t use it as a portable device.
When I connect the V30 to the audiolabs mini M-DAC using a standard USB-C to micro USB cable the phone goes into USB “Power Supply” connection mode. Although the audio works fine with the DAC using the USB Audio Player Pro app it rapidly depletes the phone battery.
I have tried to manually switch the USB connection mode to “Charging” and others but it just reverts back to Power Supply connection.
Can anyone help figure this out ?
I’m guessing the issue is to do 2 way charging offered by USB-C port. Ideally I would like the phone to be able connect to the DAC and receive power From it. If I use a standard usb2 to micro usb cable with a USB2 to USB-C adapter could this stop the phone discharging issue ?
My phone is Rooted if that helps.
This is exactly what is happening to me using a LG G6 and ifi DSD micro black. You change it to anything other than power supply it just reverts instantly to power supply and as you said drains the hell out of the battery.

General USB connectivity not working.

Yesterday I had my Mi 11 Lite delivered. After setting up the SIM card and so on, I tried to connect it to my Windows PC to copy the photographs that didn't migrate during the device transfer procedure.
Plugged it into the PC, it failed to appear in file manager. It started to charge, but wouldn't connect otherwise. Tried all the usual of setting the default USB, turning on USB debugging, nothing. Tried various different USB sockets, USB hub, nothing. Getting very frustrated, I was thinking I would return it for a refund. By this time it had downloaded an update and requested a restart. As it restarted, it was plugged into a USB port and once I unlocked it, hurrah! It connected. I then copied over the pictures. Happy days.
A little later I re-connected it to the PC and again, nothing. I installed the Xiaomi connection suite and it complained that there was no device connected. Eventually I installed Smartisan's wonderful Handshaker which creates a WiFi connection and copied over some files using it. I was still annoyed though. This morning I thought I would try connecting using my Laptop. No connection there either. I tried a USB OTG flash drive, it wouldn't work. Thinking I really would have to return the 'phone, I rebooted it. When it restarted, I plugged the USB OTG drive in and this time it appeared. Plugged the 'phone into the PC, nothing. Plugged the OTG drive back in, nothing again. Rebooted it once more, USB OTG worked. Thinking I was starting to go crazy, a thought suddenly struck me.
When I had plugged it into the PC the very first time, I had plugged it into a USB-C port on the PC. When it restarted, it was plugged into a USB-A socket as that was the last port I had tried. As the USB-A port had worked, I had then tried the USB-C port, which didn't work and after that nothing connected to the 'phone worked.
My PC is a Lenovo all in one which should allow use of the screen and keyboard to be shared with a mobile device when plugged into the PC's USB-C port. My guess is that the PC is trying to connect to the Mi 11 Lite, offering to share the screen and keyboard which then confuses the 'phone and blocks all access to the USB on the 'phone until it is rebooted. Since I have avoided using the USB-C port on the Lenovo PC to connect to the 'phone, it has worked perfectly well.
Steps to try if your 'phone won't connect to the PC:
Unplug all cables from the 'phone and reboot it.
Make sure that the USB-C cable is removed from the PC.
Plug a USB-A to USB-C cable into a USB-A port on the PC.
When the 'phone has restarted, unlock it.
Plug the USB-C end of the cable into the 'phone.
I should add that I have been using the USB-C port on the Lenovo for all my other 'phones, including a Mi Mix 2S, TCL 10, Carbon Mobile and a Teclast Tablet and all have been fine. Only the Mi 11 Lite has not worked as expected.
I hope this helps someone. It may just be something that is specific only to the Lenovo PC and the Mi 11 Lite 5G combination, but it has had me baffled for hours!
I have the same problem, I would try your solution but my Asus laptop doesn't have a USB-A but only 2 USB-C ports and no way it connects. It works ok with my pc which has an USB-A port.
So I think there's no solution for me?
Also I have another
I have an issue with Bluetooth, it doesn't automatically connect to paired devices like my car (most importantly), speaker or laptop. First I thought it was the car but since it doesn't auto connect to other devices it must be the phone(s)
I have searched for a solution on Internet but couldn't find a fix. BTW same problem on my Poco F2 pro and Oppo X2pro. All are global rom.
Has anyone a solution for this problem?
